FRANCIS T. ‘JAKE,’ ‘BIG DADDY’ DONER

Francis T. “Jake,” “Big Daddy” Doner passed away Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at his home in Zephyrhills, with his loving family at his side. Born in St. Albans on June 11, 1941, he was the son of the late Francis T. Doner and Agnes (Cameron) Audet. Jake married the former, Cynthia Reynolds, who survives him.
Jake served in the Army National Guard of Vermont. He retired from I.B.M. in 1994. Jake was a member of St. Albans Lodge 1566, B.P.O.E., Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion, American Veteran’s Association and the Eagles Club.
Jake was a part of many biker runs for many charities. He and Cyndi have many, many special biker friends from throughout the country.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Cyndi; his daughter, Vicky Jo Muzzy; and a stepson, Shawn Robitille and his wife, Leona; his sisters, Patricia Baker, and Audrey Sears and her husband, Marshall. Jake and Cyndi have 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his special Sturgis friends, Paula Zuccaro and Scott Carson, and his feline companion, “Dixie-Lee.” In addition to his beloved mother, Agnes; and special step-dad, Richard Audet; Jake was preceded in death by five daughters: Peggy, Laurie, Lisa, Debbie and Franny.
Jake was a leader and devoted friend to all.
Jake’s family would like to mention their niece, Rosemarie White and her husband, Ed, for the love and care giving they have given. Their granddaughter, Morgan, will miss Jake’s infectious laugh and handsome blue eyes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 11, 2010, in Holy Angels Catholic Church on Lake Street with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy as celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow in the family lot in Mt. Calvary cemetery. Jake’s family will receive friends on Thursday, June 10, 2010, from, 6 to 9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Jake’s name to Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 37445 Clinton Ave., Dade City, Fla. 33525.
There will be a reminder notice in this paper the week before the service.

ALLAN W. ‘PETE’ MACHIA

Allan Watson “Pete” Machia, 74, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2010, at his home in Cambridge, with his loving family by his side. Pete was born on Sept. 20, 1935, in St. Albans, son of the late Seymour and Lottie (Cherrier) Machia.
He served his country well as a proud member of the Marines until his Honorable Medical Discharge in 1953. He married Catherine (Russell) Machia on July 22, 1956, in Fairfax. Pete literally swept her off her feet with his amazing ability to dance and they were always taking over the dance floor. His love for music included his own band, fondly referred to as “The Machia Boys,” as well as being a member of the Fairfax-Westford band for several years.
Pete had worked as a talented and dedicated foreman with Essex Realty for 42 years. He was a hard workingman that never stopped, dependable and always doing what he said he was going to do. He could accomplish anything with his hands, from moving a three-story house 20 miles to building a walk bridge or bench for friends and family. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 35. He was a great baseball and basketball player in his younger years and later coached Lamoille County Youth baseball for 25 years.
For 52 years he went to Hunt Brook where he loved hunting and seeking out Vermont’s elusive white tail always anxiously awaiting opening day of the next season. He also looked forward to the peaceful times he spent fishing, gardening and playing golf. Pete was a huge all-around sports fan of the Red Sox, Giants, Celtics and Bruins. His greatest love was for his wife and family whom he loved so deeply. Pete was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He will be greatly missed by all who had the true pleasure and honor to have known him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Cathy Machia of Cambridge; his three sons: Allan Machia Jr. and wife, Jennifer, of Stowe, Randy Machia of Highgate, Dana Machia and wife, Karen, of Jeffersonville; four daughters: Debbie Whitney and husband, David, of Johnson, Rhonda Bennett and husband, Christopher, of Jeffersonville, Paula Audibert and husband, Mark, of Northfield, Wendy Machia and fiancée, Jamian Campbell, of Jeffersonville; three brothers: Dalton Machia and wife, Grace, of St. Albans, Maurice (Jim) Machia and wife, MaryJane, of Fairfax, Carlton (Bruce) Machia and wife, Sandy, of Wallingford; three sisters: Meredith Gillilan of Fletcher, Joyce Allen of Essex Jct., Lois Gillespie and husband, Hubert (Bert), of Waterville; 14 grandchildren: Benjamin, Chelsey, Matthew, Troy, Hillery, Danielle, Zachary, Jane, Amanda, RJ, Tyler, Cassandra, Ryan, Natalie; four great-grandchildren: Avery, Xavier, Carter, and Logan; brothers and sisters-in-law: Elizabeth (Betty) Rooney, Clayton Russell, Burr and Joanne Russell, Charles and Laura Russell, Glendon McNally; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and special neighbors, Pat and Dave DeLang.
He was predeceased by his father and mother, Seymour and Lottie Machia; his father and mother in-law, Charles and Isabel Russell; his brother, Paul Machia and his wife, Margaret; his brothers and sisters-in-law: Louis Russell, Ruby McNally, Larry Rooney, Beverly Russell, and Cleon Gillilan.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the A. W. Rich Funeral Home - Fairfax Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Fairfax with Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. A reception will follow at the home of Pete and Cathy Machia in Cambridge. A committal service will be held in the spring at a date and time to be announced in the family lot in Sanderson Corners cemetery, Fairfax.

HERBERT CEPHAS BRAULT

Herbert C. Brault, 83, recently of Rome, N.Y., died after a short illness in Ormond Beach, Fla., on Feb. 18, 2010. He was born in St. Albans on Feb. 11, 1927, son of the late Mildred and Ted Brault.
He leaves his loving companion of many years, Jackie Rolewicz of Rome, N.Y.; and two children, Karen Pelletreau and her husband, Bill, of Sandy Hook, Conn., and Dr. Peter Brault and his partner, Stephanie Smith, of Westminster, Mass. He was most proud of his four grandchildren: Kimberly Pelletreau and her partner, Nicole Barbuto, of Dorchester, Mass., Lauren Pelletreau and her husband, Travis Tietjen, of Breckenridge, Colo., Adam Brault of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Travis Brault of McGill University in Montreal. He was predeceased by two wives, Jane Brault, mother of Karen and Peter; and Phyliss Brault.
Herb was born and raised in St. Albans and graduated from Bellows Free Academy in 1947, after serving in the Navy in World War II from March 1945 to June 1946, when he was honorably discharged. While raising his family in St. Albans, he was the owner of Twiggs, Inc., during this time he was a member of Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion, Past President of the Owl Club, the Vermont YMCA, St. Albans Bicentennial Committee and the Franklin County Maple Sugar Committee.
He and his family moved to Lake Placid, N.Y. in 1963. Herb worked several jobs in Lake Placid before his employment at the Olympic Arena. His years there included the 1980 Winter Olympics. At the arena he worked tirelessly and became a friend to many. He retired in 1982. Herb then moved to Florida for many years and worked for the City of Daytona. In recent years he was back in Lake Placid working and laughing with his longtime friend, Ed Heim, at the Lake Placid Clock and Watch Shop.
Herb always gave more than he took and will be remembered for his sense of humor and quick wit. He was truly loved and will be missed by all that knew him.
His wishes were to be buried along with his parents at the Greenwood cemetery in St. Albans. The family will have a private graveside service late in the spring.
MAURICE H. ‘MOE’ LONGLEY
WEST BERKSHIRE

Maurice H. “Moe” Longley, age 57, passed away unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
He was born Jan. 25, 1953, in Meriden, Conn., the son of Ralph Longley and the late Marilyn (McKinney) Longley.
Maurice was a resident of the area most of his life and was a 1971 graduate of Enosburg Falls High School. He drove truck for McDermott’s for many years. He had also driven for Pike, Red Head, S.T. Griswold.
He enjoyed music and for many years played bass guitar for many bands including, Conrad Samuels Band, and the Keeghan Nolan Band. Through the years, Maurice played many benefits to help those in need. He also enjoyed the time spent on the farm with his special friend, Pete Soule.
His many enjoyments included logging, truck driving, ice fishing with Lester Derry, and car racing. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his companion, Debra Austin, of West Berkshire; his children, Stacie Manchester of Sheldon, James Longley and his friend, Deanna Royea, of Berkshire, Derek Austin of Sheldon; his grandchildren, Emilie, Kailie, Taylor, Aliyah, Madison and Alivia; his father, Ralph Longley and his friend, Olive White, of Berkshire; his brother and his wife, Larry and Janet Longley of Berkshire; and his former wife, Cathy Longley of Sheldon. He was predeceased by his mother, Marilyn Longley.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 2, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Pastor Lyle Willey officiating. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist cemetery in Enosburg Falls.
Visiting hours will be held today (Monday) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls.

Mrs. Deborah L. Sweetser, age 58, died unexpectedly at her home, Sunday morning, Feb. 28, 2010, following a brief illness. She was born Feb. 26, 1952, in St. Albans, daughter of the late Maynard and Jean (Hall) Pearo.
She worked for Peerless Clothing, and was a housekeeper at St. Albans Health and Rehab Center, until retiring in September of 2009. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Unit 758.
Debbie is survived by her children, Matthew Sweetser and his fiancé, Heidi Lovely, of Franklin, and Heather Snider and her husband, Bruce Jr., of Swanton; her seven grandchildren: Ashley, Matthew II, Hunter and Mikayla Sweetser, Bruce III, Laci and Emily Snider. She also leaves her brothers and sisters, John Pearo and his wife, Nancy of St. Albans, Sharon Patterson of West Palm Beach, Fla., Maynard Pearo Jr., of Berkshire; her step-mother, Lucy Pearo of St. Albans; step-brother, Haskell Mayo and his wife, Patricia, of Swanton, and Ora Larose, and her husband Robert of St. Albans. She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, James Pearo; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Patterson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 5, 2010, at 10 a.m., in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel with Father Maurice Roy, pastor of Holy Angels Church, officiating. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be later in Holy Cross cemetery.

Robert R. “Butch” LeClair, 72, a longtime area resident, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at his home following a brief illness with his family at his side. He was born Sept. 3, 1937, in Plattsburgh, N.Y., the son of the late Rudolph P. and Gertrude (O’Connor) LeClair.
Butch was a 1955 graduate of St. Mary’s High School and a member of St. Mary’s Parish since 1942, where he served as Religious Education Instructor, Pastoral Committee, Usher, Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was a member of St. Albans Lodge 1566, B.P.O.E. since 1958, Knights of Columbus Council 297, Sons of the American Legion and Champlain Country Club, where he spent most days of summer in his greatest enjoyment outside of his family.
He also served on the St. Albans Town School Board from 1975 to 1986. Butch owned and operated his own business, “Pud’s Lunch,” for 14 years and worked and retired from the Sherwin Williams Company, where he spent 20 years as Store Manager. He had been involved as one of the people in the advertisement for the American Lung Association Golf card that was viewed on television station, WCAX. Butch also volunteered as a Guardian Ad Litem for Franklin County Family Court and served as a Board Member for the Court Diversion Program and also the Franklin County Home Health Agency.
In addition to his wife, Beverly Clark LeClair, whom he married April 23, 1960, he leaves five children: Mary Kay Burnett and her husband, Peter, of Cohassett, Mass., Nancy LeClair and her husband, Mark Deitcher, of Elkins Park, Pa., Susan LeClair of St. Albans, Vt., John LeClair and his wife, Christina, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Joseph LeClair of Essex, Vt. Butch is also survived by his four sisters: Charlotte Pudvah of Bakersfield, Vt., Marjorie LeClair of Marlborough, Mass., Jane Finn of Lewiston, N.Y., and Kay Jarvi and her husband, William, of Rome, N.Y.; his brother, John LeClair and his wife, Donna, of Williamsburg, Va.; his grandchildren: Andrew and Allison Burnett, Nathan, Owen and Emmett Deitcher, MacKenzie, Calvin and Jagger LeClair; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mildred and Orville Keeler of Burlington; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard LeClair and his wife, Marilyn; his brothers-in-law, Francis Pudvah and James Finn; his nieces, Sheila Hershel and Laura Finn; and his best friend, Max.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Fairfield Street. Butch’s family will receive friends on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

SHIRLEY ANN GRAZIANO

Shirley Ann Graziano, 79, of Randolph Center, died Wednesday evening, March 3, 2010, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
She was born June 3, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Leonard and Mildred (Tabor) Holman. She was raised in Randolph and had lived in Milton, Vt. and Berlin, N.H. before returning to Randolph around 1982. She was married to Thomas P. Graziano on March 10, 1951, in Randolph. He passed away in 2001. Shirley had worked as a proofreader for the Randolph Herald, as a bookkeeper for Lamson Furniture. She also worked at the Kimball Public Library, and Gifford Medical Center thrift shop. Shirley was a member of Bethany Church and the Randolph Senior Center. She enjoyed reading, traveling the world, gardening, knitting, sewing and quilting.
Survivors include her sons, David Graziano and his wife, Jana, of Coreyton, Tenn., Paul Graziano and companion, Arlene Conn, of Baltimore, Md., and Philip Graziano and his wife, Debi, of St. Albans; sisters, Joan Kingsbury of Burlington, Vt. and Nancy Spitler of California; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, Carroll, Robert and Russell Holman; and sisters, Bernice Smith and Katherine Kuhn.
Memorial Services will be held at 6 p.m., Saturday, March 6, at Day Funeral Home in Randolph, with Rev. Kathy Eddy, officiating. Calling hour is from 5 p.m. Saturday until service time. Burial will be in the spring at the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center.
