The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Thomas D. Nadeau was the celebrant and homilist. Joseph Gamache and Eugene LaBombard served as Ministers of the Altar. Music was provided by organist and soloist, Mary Jo Gillilan.
Members of the statewide Emergency Medical Services formed a large guard of honor at the funeral home, church and cemetery led by Lt. Leon Begnoche of the Swanton Village Police Department. Participating in the honor guard were the St. Albans Town Color Guard Team, Missisquoi Valley Rescue including active, retired and charter members, Franklin Rescue, Fairfax, Rescue, Montgomery and Sheldon First Response, Enosburgh Rescue, Richford Rescue, Alburgh Rescue, Essex Rescue, AmCare Ambulance, IBM Emergency Medical Services, Milton Rescue, Grand Isle Rescue, Swanton Village Fire Department, Highgate Volunteer Fire Department, Alburgh Volunteer Fire Department, Georgia Fire Department, St. Albans City and Town Fire Departments, St. Albans City Police, Swanton Village Police, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Franklin County International Firefighters Association, and the Barre City Fire Department. The funeral procession was escorted from the funeral home to The Church of the Nativity by Swanton Village Police Officer Donald Gilbert and CPL Alex Dubois.

Babcock and Swanton Central Schools, Missisquoi Valley Union High School, Wood & Kidder, Inc., Flowers by Debbie, Doug Rollo Construction, Pizzagali Construction, WSRA St. Albans Radio, Border Line Hairstyling, Bill’s Handy Man Service, Merchants Bank, CJL Association, Inc., Vermont State Police, Vermont Furniture Galleries, The Total Home Center, Memorial United Methodist Church and the parish community of Nativity/St. Louis.
The White Funeral Pall was draped over Joan’s casket by Crystal Lampman and Louise Larivee. The Crucifix was then placed by Linda Stell. Readings from The Old and New Testament were proclaimed by Leonard “Joey” Stell and Kristine Stell. Michael and Sarah Stell presented The Offertory Gifts. Special Words of Remembrance were shared by David St. Pierre and the EMT Prayer was read by Lynn Billado.
The Rite of Committal and Interment followed at the St. Pierre family lot in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic cemetery with Father Nadeau reading the committal prayers. Final Words were spoken by MVR member Michael Juaire and The Emergency Medical Services Flags were presented to Joan’s daughter, Doris Dumont, by MVR Crew Chief Lynn Billado, and to her brother-in-law, David St. Pierre, by MVR Representative Raymond Connor. The American flag was presented to Doris by MVR charter and founding member Wesley F. Kidder. The bearers were Leonard “Joey” Stell, Michael Stell, Daniel Billado, Lester Lampman, David Desorcie, Travis Greeno, Donald Hatch, Christopher Hatch and Reggie Beliveau.
Following The Prayers of Committal, a reception was held for family and friends at the My-T-Fine II Restaurant in Highgate Springs hosted by Nancy Paquette and staff.
CYRIL ORA DAY
Newport

Cyril Ora Day, 88, of Newport, died Dec. 22, 2009, in Newport. He was born May 18, 1921, in Newport, a son of Ora and Isabelle (Labounty) Day. On July 1, 1946, he married Evelyn Monfette, who predeceased him.
Mr. Day was a foreman for the milling department at Union Butterfields for 44 years. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served his country during World War II. He was the chief machinist mate and original plank owner of the USS Bunker Hill. He was a member of the American Legion Post 21 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 798 both of Newport.
Cyril enjoyed woodworking and making different pieces of furniture for family and friends and occasionally for sale. Among his hobbies he also enjoyed fishing off his front lawn into the Clyde River, feeding the ducks when they came to the front of the house, working in his garden, family get togethers, and he loved his special dog Polly Anna.
He is survived by his children: Cheryl Sargent and her husband, David, of Bethlehem, N.H., Kim Collins and her husband, Eric, of Richford, Terrance Day and his wife, Cathy, of Waterville, Vt., Randy Day and his wife, Sue, of Ware, N.H., Robin Day and his wife, Georgia, of Brandford, Conn., and Chantelle Orlen and her husband, Josh, of Cornish, N.H. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Justin Day and his wife Amy, Trevor Day and Meagan Bazin, Josh Day and Michelle Menard, Heather, Timmy, Jason, and Lauren Day; by two great-grandchildren, Noah Day and Bella Orlen. He was predeceased by two brothers, Calvin and Lawrence Day; and by a sister, Priscilla Smith.
Friends called on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport. Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Newport with the Rev. Michael Reardon S.D.V. celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment in St. Mary’s cemetery.

RITA MEGRATH
ENOSBURG FALLS

Rita (Blouin) Megrath, born on Nov. 18, 1949, succumbed to Pancreatic Cancer on Christmas Eve in San Jose, Calif. She was born and educated and spent many happy years in Enosburg Falls, Vt. She married Mike Megrath in 1969, and they moved to California in 1983.
Rita got work with San Jose ParGas, a job very similar to her work for Blouin Bros. Inc. in Enosburg. Following this was the start of her 23-year career with the City of San Jose; the beginning six years with former Mayor Tom McEnery’s office. She later spent her remaining 17 years with the City Manager’s office. She was the Executive Assistant to Leslie White, Regina Williams, Del Borgsdorf, and Debra Figone. Throughout these years, she had met and made many close friends and enjoyed working alongside them.
Rita is survived by her son, Evan Megrath, his wife Jamie, and her son Austin. Also, her longtime companion Mike Whitmore; and best friend, Wanda Hudson. She is also survived by her siblings: Noel Blouin, Mary Adams, Louise Leach and Corrine Ryan, all of Enosburg Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Mike Megrath; her parents, Wellington and Pauline Blouin; and her brothers, Leonard of NM and Paul and Thomas of Enosburg.
Rita was loved much and will be missed dearly by so many. Her great sense of humor and her wonderful laugh made her fun to be with.
A celebration of Rita’s life will be held at a later date in Enosburg Falls.
ROY S. BAKER
ST. ALBANS

Roy S. Baker died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, in St. Albans. He was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Campton, N.H., to the late Edward and Bertha (Smith) Baker.
He grew up in Pleasant Valley and Bakersfield. Roy was the Valedictorian of his class at Brigham Academy in Bakersfield. He was a veteran of the US. Army serving during the Korean War, earning the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars. Roy was very proud of his service to his country.
Following his honorable discharge, he married Dorothy Lamson on May 23, 1953, who survives him. They raised two sons, David and Mark. Roy was a great dad and was involved in the formation of Troop 42 in Georgia. He spent many weekends with the scouts.
Roy was an avid snowmobiler. He was instrumental in the creation of the Missisquoi Valley Trail and served on the board. He and Dorothy traveled the length of the trail on snowmobile as well as bicycles. He was a founder of the Georgia Mountain Snowmobile Club and was a member of other clubs in Franklin County. He didn’t own a boat, but loved to spend time at Kilkare State Park near the water.
He was a key member of the 81 Baker Racing Team. He followed stock car racing, especially Bob McCreadie and Jeff Gordon. He really enjoyed the trips to New Hampshire International Speedway roaming the garage area. He was a member of the “251” Club and a true Yankee fan. During sugaring season, he loved to spend time at Mark’s sugarhouse.
Roy was employed for over 30 years with New England Telephone. He was proud of his many years as a lineman. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Roy retired in 1983, but enjoyed working part-time for Franklin Ford Tractor and Brault Artic Cat. When he was at home there was always a project to be done and his lawn always looked good.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothy; sons, David Baker and his wife, Sharon, and Mark Baker and his wife, Jean; grandsons, Matthew Baker and his wife, Jennifer, Patrick and Seth Baker, Nicholas Baker and his close friend, Lauren Colburn, and Kevin Baker; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his grandson, Samuel Baker; and his siblings, Roger, Harold and Shirley.
Roy’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, Jan. 6, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of his family. Spring interment will take place in the St. Albans Bay cemetery.

JOHN CLAUDE ST. ONGE

The Liturgy of Christian Burial for John Claude St. Onge was celebrated on Wednesday morning, Dec. 30, at St. John the Baptist Church in Enosburg Falls. The Rev. Daniel Jordan, pastor, celebrated the Mass and was assisted by the Rev. Bernard Bechard, pastor of St. Anthony’s Church in Sheldon and St. Mary’s Church in Franklin. Claire Hungerford served as organist and soloist.
The Pall was placed on John’s casket by his grandchildren, Laurel Grenier, Nathan Sicard, Emilie Rich and Andrea Miller. His grandchildren also presented the Offertory Gifts at the Altar for Holy Communion. The Old and New Testament readings were offered by John’s brother-in-law Paul Dupre. The Holy Gospel was read by Father Bechard. At the conclusion of the Mass a eulogy, written by John’s children John P. St. Onge and Jeanne Sicard, was read by John P. St. Onge.
Serving as pallbearers were John’s son, John P. St. Onge; son-in-law, Richard Sicard; grandson, Nathan Sicard; Robert Flaherty and Walter Scott. Interment, with military honors, will take place in the spring at St. John the Baptist cemetery in Enosburgh.
Following the Mass, friends and family members gathered in the Parish Hall at the Church for a time of fellowship and refreshment. Among those attending the Mass were delegations representing the Ladies of the St. Anne’s Society, members of Rita’s card club and staff from St. Albans Health & Rehab.
John Claude St. Onge, a resident of Orchard Street in Enosburg Falls, passed away on Friday, Dec. 25, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans at the age of 78.

BYRON P. GORDON
GRAND ISLE

Byron P. Gordon, 89, of Grand Isle, died Jan. 9, 2010. He was born in Grand Isle to Willis P. and Sylva G. Gordon, on May 22, 1920.
He attended Grand Isle Schools and Burlington High School. He bravely fought in World War II, joining the U.S. Army. He was a part of the 11th Armored Division fighting throughout Europe. His troop was one of the first to liberate the Mauthausen Prison Camp. The atrocities he saw were engraved in his mind for all of his life. While enlisted in the Army, he achieved the rank of Sergeant.
After returning from the war, he married Barbara Drew in 1949, and settled down to operating a successful dairy farm, milking and raising Jersey cows. He served his Community as a Grand Isle School Director, a Grand Isle Water District Commissioner, and a Grand Isle Creamery Director. He supported his community recently, by donating land to the Grand Isle Fire Department, which is the future site of a new Fire Station. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 42, Enosburg Falls.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara, and their six children: Drew (JoAnne) Gordon of Vergennes, Myra Gordon of Grand Isle, Roy (Judy) Gordon of Grand Isle, Linda (Joseph) Craig of Sheldon, Lucy (Robert) Wirtz of Grand Isle, and Norman (Rita) Gordon of Jericho. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Garth Gaboriault, Gabrielle Cline, Dan Gordon, Gina Gordon, and Shawna Gordon. He also has four great-grandchildren that will miss him, Caylib Gaboriault, Carson Cline, Alexis Gordon, and Maxwell Gordon. He leaves his sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Norman Hammond of North Carolina; and a brother-in-law, Ken Drew from Virginia. He is also survived by two nephews and one niece. He was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, C. Keith and Ruth Gordon; and a daughter, Pamela Ruth, who was tragically killed in 1963 at four years of age when she was struck by a car in front of the family farm.
The Gordon Family wishes to thanks Hospice. Without their help, we could not have made Byron's last wish come true - to die at home in the loving arms of his family. We would like to especially thank, Betsy, Kim, and Tom, and all the others that answered our phone calls.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at 11 a.m. from St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church. Father Lawrence P. Ridgley was the celebrant and homilist. Assisting was The Reverend Mr. Alan Vincelette Deacon assigned to the Island Roman Catholic Parishes. Josh and Sarah Fryer served as Ministers of the Altar. Music was provided by soloist Maurice Gauthier accompanied by organist Carol Pellerin.
Readings from both The Old and New Testament were proclaimed by Jane Fryer. Tammy, Colton and Kurt Poquette presented The Offertory Gifts.
Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from the Alburgh Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, St. Anne’s Shrine, Island in the Sun Senior Citizens, Christopher Advertising, Coldwell Banker-Island Realty and the Alburgh Beverage Mart.

PHILIP H. BESSETTE

Philip H. Bessette, 48, formerly of Burlington, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, after a long battle with leukemia, at his home in Jericho. He was born in Burlington on March 23, 1961, the son of Ervin Sr. and Margaret (Miller) Bessette.
He was the third generation roofer and ran Bessette Brothers, specializing in roofing and construction. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Denise (Blondin) Bessette, of Jericho; the mother of his children, Ruth Dandrow, of Richmond; three children: Nicole Bessette of Colchester, Michael Bessette of Richmond, and Philip "P.D." Dion of Shelburne; three stepchildren: Katie Buchanan of Montpelier, Jake Buchanan of Jericho, and Sarah Buchanan of Rochester; three step-grandchildren; his father and wife, Ervin Sr. and Dianne Bessette of Crystal, Fla.; his mother, Margaret Miller of St. Albans; one sister, Carol LaRochelle of Enosburg Falls; five brothers: Ervin Bessette Jr. of St. Albans, Eugene Bessette of Alburgh, Ernest Bessette of Richford, Richard Bessette of Berkshire and Leo Martin of St. Albans; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Ernest "Pops" and Lena (Lord) Bessette; and his mentor, Pete Maynard.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at Elmwood-Meunier Funeral Chapel, 97 Elmwood Ave., Burlington, where visitation is from 6 p.m. until the services.
