LUCILLE LONERGAN O’BRYAN

Lucille Lonergan O’Bryan, 86, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2009, at the Redstone Villa with her family at her side. Born in Detroit, Mich. on May 29, 1922, Lucille was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Helen (Sargent) Lonergan. On June 12, 1947, in Middlesex, Vt., Lucille married Edward Anson O’Bryan, who preceded her in death on April 9, 2008.
Lucille graduated from Montpelier High School and attended Vermont College. She served her country during World War II by enlisting in the United States Navy on June 1, 1944; she served in Cleveland, Ohio and at the Navy Supply Center at Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii receiving her Honorable Discharge on March 6, 1946. Lucille was a member of the Green Mountain Post 1 American Legion, Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service-Green Mountain Girls Unit 113.
Survivors include her children, David Anson O’Bryan and his wife, Paulette, of Barre, Candace Irene Barnes and her husband, Steven, of South Burlington, Peter Charles O’Bryan and his wife, Barbara, of St. Albans, Mark Steven O’Bryan and his wife, Jeanne, of Fairfax; nine grandchildren: Thomas and Benjamin O’Bryan, Steven Jr. and Michelle Barnes, Erin and Monika O’Bryan, Christine Cilley, Caren Slayton and Carol Bandy, and six great-grandchildren: Adeline, Ashley, Cameron, Noah, Caleb and Paige. Lucille is also survived by her sisters, Colleen Savage and her husband, Dick, of Meriden, Conn., and Sandra Colgan and her husband, Jake, of Barre; a brother, Neil Lonergan and his wife, Luana, of Waynesboro, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Edward, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Larose; and stepfather, Charles Wellington.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans. Interment for Edward and Lucille with full military honors will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the O’Bryan family lot in the St. Albans Bay cemetery.

DOROTHY R. CORWELL

Dorothy R. Corwell, 79, a resident of this area for 41 years, passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at the Northwestern Medical Center with her loving family at her side. Born in North Cambridge, Vt. on Aug. 23, 1929, Dorothy was the daughter of the late James and Florence (LaPlant) Taylor. Dorothy was married to Fay J. “Peanut” Corwell, who preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1992.
Dorothy was employed for several years at the former Verdelle Village Extended Care Facility. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose, St. Albans Chapter 321. Her favorite pastime was watching soap operas, especially “Guiding Light,” going to the Alburgh Auction House, and Colchester Bingo. She also was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed ice fishing.
Survivors include her children, Fay A. Corwell, of Sheldon, Marilyn Brow, of Sheldon, Judy Messier and her husband, Gerald, of Bridgewater, Va., Beatrice Witham and her husband, Robert, of Highgate, Jane Ferland and her husband, John, of Highgate Center, and Bonnie LaFrance and her husband, John, of Highgate Falls; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Dorothy is also survived by her brothers, Max James Taylor, of Montgomery Village, Wendell Taylor and Walter Taylor, both of Pownal, Vt.; her sisters, Gyneth Bevins and her husband, Lloyd, of St. Albans, Pearl Martin of Highgate Springs, Irene Carlson and her husband, Ronald, of South Carolina, Waneta Baker of Bennington; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Rick Lansing. In addition to her parents and husband, Peanut, Dorothy was preceded in death by her sisters, Dora Tatro and Marion Raymond; and son-in-law, Francis Brow.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans, with the Reverend Herman Benjamin, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Corwell family lot in the Rice Hill cemetery. Dorothy’s family will receive friends on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home.

WILLIAM WELCH McCONNELL

William W. McConnell, 87, formerly of Manchester Center and a resident of Fairfax for the past four years, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care.
Born in Washington, Pa., on Jan. 19, 1921, he was a son of Harry and Nancy (Crane) McConnell.
He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, Mass., plus he acquired additional certification from Harvard University.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, then the U.S. Naval Reserves until retiring in 1954, with the rank of Lieutenant.
On Sept. 8, 1951, he married Miss Nancy Price in West Hartford, Conn.
Mr. McConnell was employed as an aerospace electrical engineer with Kaman Aircraft in Bloomfield, Conn., for several years. Being an avid reader and his love for books led him to becoming proprietor of “Mad Tom Book Shop” in Manchester Center, where he was a member of the Manchester Center Rotary. He also possessed a passion for electronics, building many radios, which he shared with his family and was a ham radio operator (KB1MRV).
Mr. McConnell is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Fairfax; two sons and their spouses, David McConnell and his wife, Ambrosia, of Bethlehem, Pa., and Daniel McConnell and his wife, Kathleen, of Georgia, Vt.; five grandchildren: Jeffrey McConnell and his wife, Lucinda, and their children, Xavior and Ian of Dupont, Wash., Alexander McConnell of Sacramento, Calif., Nancy McConnell of Bethlehem, Pa., Gregory McConnell and Sean McConnell, both of Georgia, Vt.
A private memorial service will be held later, at the convenience of the family.

ST. ALBANS, Vt. / WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Dr. Deogracias J. Esguerra Jr., a fondly remembered surgeon in the St. Albans area, at the age of 80, died suddenly at his home in Williamsville, on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009.
A Mass of Christian Burial is being planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2009, in St. Mary’s Church, St. Albans. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2009.

JAMES DAVID ‘JIM’ GIROUX

NORTH HERO - James David “Jim” Giroux, age 52 years, a longtime resident of North Hero, died unexpectedly, late Sunday evening, Feb. 22, 2009, at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
Born in Burlington on June 7, 1956, he was the son of Leo and the late Grace (Taylor) Giroux. He graduated from Essex High School and on Aug. 28, 1982, was married to Tracy (Sherwin), who survives him.
Known as a Master Carpenter and Builder, Jim began his career working several years for Kessel - Duff Construction and later established his own construction company known as Mill Run Woodworks. He was active in the North Hero community serving as an EMT with Grand Isle Rescue and was a member of the North Hero Historical Society. Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially loved living in North Hero on the Way Farm. Jim will always be remembered for his humor, wit, generosity and goodness.
Jim is survived by his wife and best friend for 31 years, Tracy of North Hero; his father, Leo Giroux of Bradenton, Fla.; his mother-in-law, Helen Kenny and her companion, Ray Sargent, of North Hero; four sisters and their husbands: Darlene and Brian Nelligan of Williston, Cissie and Christian Deane of Essex Junction, Happy and Mickey Dattilio of Essex Junction, and Mikie and Gaston Santerre of Carlsbad, Calif.; three brothers: Joey Giroux and companion, Judy Wilson, of Grand Isle, Peter Giroux and wife, Moya, of Atlanta, Ga., and Patrick Giroux and wife, Jeanne, of Palmetto, Fla.; brothers-in-law, Chriss Sherwin of North Hero, Jack Sherwin and his two children, Andrew and Lyndsie, of Hartford, N.Y. and Michael Murdock of North Hero; dear friends, Karl, Kathy and K-2 Raacke and Richard and Eileen Mitchell, all of North Hero; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins; as well as his faithful companion, his dog, Basil.
In addition to his mother, Jim was predeceased by Tracy’s stepfather, Melvin Kenny, in October of 1997.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at 1 p.m. from the North Hero United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the family lot in Hyde cemetery. Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.

LEONARD R. DUBOIS
MAQUAM SHORE, SWANTON

Leonard R. Dubois, age 69 years, died peacefully Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009, at his Maquam Shore residence, surrounded by his loving family, following a long and hard fought struggle with ALS.
Born in Vergennes, Vt. on Oct. 8, 1939, he was the son of Raymond and Bernadette (Gagnon) Dubois. He attended St. Anne’s Academy in Swanton and Mt. Assumption Parochial School in Plattsburgh. On July 2, 1960, Leonard married the love of his life, the former Sally Hakey.
At an early age, Leonard began working with his father and continued for the rest of his life working in construction and excavating. He was extremely devoted to the Swanton community having served many years as both a Village Trustee and Town Selectman. He was instrumental in establishing the Swanton Zoning Board and also served as the youngest president of the Swanton Chamber of Commerce. Leonard was also a member of Seventy-Six Lodge 14, F. &A.M., as well as the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Valley of Burlington, Mt. Sinai Shriners 3 Montpelier and the Swanton Memorial United Methodist Church. In earlier years, he coached Missisquoi Amateur Hockey and was a member of the Swanton Village Fire Department.
He was an avid pilot who enjoyed flying helicopters and airplanes. “It has often been said that if it has wheels, tracks, wings, roto blades or floats, Leonard can operate or fly it.” He was also an avid hunter. However, his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his two grandchildren, Macy and Zeb.
In addition to his wife, Sally, of 49 years, Leonard leaves his mother, Mrs. Bernadette Dubois of West Swanton; a daughter, Debbie and her husband, John Lavoie, of Maquam Shore; a son, Scott Dubois and his wife, Faith, of Swanton Village; two grandchildren, Macy Lavoie and Zeb Dubois; three sisters, Irene and husband, Ed Dixon, of West Swanton, Lucille “Tupe” and husband, Guy Bernadet, of Burlington, and Cecile “Pet” and husband, Rad Daignault, of West Swanton; and several nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Raymond Dubois, in September of 1991.
A Funeral service will be held Sunday, March 1, 2009, at 2 p.m. from the Memorial United Methodist Church, 23 Grand Ave., Swanton. The Reverend Doctor Marguerite C. Gage will officiate. Private Interment for family members only will follow at the Dubois family lot in Riverside cemetery. There will be no public calling hours; however, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall immediately following the interment.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and that gifts in Leonard’s memory be made to the Memorial United Methodist Church, in care of Robert Cyr, 201 St. Albans Rd., Swanton 05488.

Mrs. Norma Jean Letourneau, age 80 years, formerly of Alburgh, Vt. and more recently of Ashland, Va., died Thursday evening, March 26, 2009, in The Hospice of Virginia located in Richmond, Va.

EDMUND D. STEELE
St. Albans

St. Albans has lost one of its finest citizens. Edmund D. Steele, a resident of St. Albans for the past 64 years, died Friday, March 27, 2009, at the Franklin County Rehab Center, following a brief illness. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., Jan. 15, 1911, the son of the late Charles W. and Charlotte (Lincoln) Steele.
Edmund graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in 1928. He then attended Middlebury College in 1928 and 1929. He moved to New York City and was employed at National City Bank from 1930 to 1937. While he was employed at the bank, he attended and graduated from New York University, School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance in 1935. The same year he married Dorothy M. Crowe of St. Johnsbury after her graduation from Middlebury College. They lived in New York City until 1937, when they returned to St. Johnsbury. Edmund then was employed by Vermont Savings Bank in Brattleboro and Chester Offices from 1938 to 1945. Edmund and Dorothy moved to St. Albans in 1945, where Edmund took a position at the Franklin County Bank (now known as TD Banknorth), where he remained until his retirement in 1976. He then served on the Board of Directors as a Director and Chairman, Investment and Trust Committee until 1981. Throughout his career, Edmund was a dedicated and well-respected banker.
Edmund served as a Trustee and Director of many organizations including, St. Albans Rotary, King’s Daughters Home, The Warner Home for Little Wanderers, Vermont Congregational Homes, (Atkinson Residence in Newbury), First Congregational Church of St. Albans, United Church of Christ Conference, American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, St. Albans Historical Society, Rowland E. Robinson Memorial Association (Ferrisburg), Vermont Historical Society and Auto Club of Vermont (AAA). Edmund was named St. Albans Rotary Man of the Year in 2000. He was also a member of Franklin Lodge 4, F&AM.
Edmund had many interests and hobbies, including Vermont 251 Club, photography and bowling. Edmund was a lover and collector of all types of books, especially Civil War and Vermont history.
With other local citizens, Edmund and his wife, Dorothy, were instrumental in creating the St. Albans Historical Society. Edmund devoted countless hours to the museum for many years.
Edmund is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, George and Dianne Steele, of St. Albans Town; his grandson, Jason Steele and his wife, Betty, of Chandler, Ariz.; his grandson, Jeffrey Steele and his wife, Jenifer, of St. Albans Town; his great-granddaughter, Ava Steele, of Chandler, Ariz.; his sister-in-law, Gwendolyn Steele of Shelburne; a special niece, Mary Tromba, of Manchester, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; his sisters, Helen Thistle and Eleanor Steele; his twin brother, John Steele; and brother, Wesley Steele; as well as his sister-in-law, Marguerite Steele.
The family would like to thank Ann Noel and Norma Gratton who provided Edmund kind and gentle care at home. We also thank the wonderful staff at the Franklin County Home Health for the many years of devoted care. Without their care and support, Edmund would not have been able to remain at home until the time of his death.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of St. Albans on the north end of Church Street. The Reverend Judy Steger Kennedy will officiate. Interment will be later this spring in the Steele family lot in Greenwood cemetery. Edmund’s family will receive friends on Monday, March 30, 2009, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.
