ROLAND L. VIENS

Mr. Roland L. Viens, age 92, died Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2008, in the Burlington Rehab Center after a short two-week stay there. He was born in St. Angels, Quebec, Sept. 4, 1915, son of the late Philip and Amanda (Loiselle) Viens. He married Rita Morin, July 14, 1945. Mrs. Viens died Oct. 17, 2007.
In 1944, Roland joined the U. S. Army and served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart and discharged following his injuries in Europe. Roland and Rita operated a dairy farm for many years. He was a communicant of Holy Angels Church, a member of the St. Jean deBaptiste Societe, and a life member of Green Mountain Post 1, of the American Legion, life member and member of the Commanders Club of Lake Champlain Chapter 17 of the Disabled American Veterans. His pride and avid passion was his gardens. He also enjoyed fishing and deer hunting.
Roland is survived by his daughters, Susan and her husband, Alec Campbell, of West Swanton, Aline Bedard and her special friend, Stephen Dexter, of St. Albans, Louise and her husband, Glenn Thompson, of Essex Center; a daughter-in-law, Margot Mendad of Hemerskeil, Germany; grandchildren: Ian Campbell, Jessie and her husband, Michael Paradise, Carolyn Viens, Daniel Viens, Eric Thompson, Adam Bedard and Katie Bedard; two great-grandchildren; sisters, brothers and their spouses: Raymond and Claire Viens of Winooski, Paul and Therese Viens of St. Albans, Leonard and Jean Viens of Colchester, Anna and Leo Cota of Swanton, Irene Brosseau of Highgate and Sister Bertha Viens of Manchester, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his loving wife, Rita, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Annette; son, Robert Viens; and son-in-law, Randy Bedard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be in the Viens family lot in Mt. Calvary cemetery.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Armande M. Loranger, who passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, was celebrated Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at 1 p.m. in Holy Angels Church, Lake Street, St. Albans, with Father Maurice Roy officiating. Altar Servers were Norman Bushey and Russell Porwitzsky.
The Old Testament Scripture was read by son-in-law, Raymond Giroux. The New Testament Scripture was read by Seminarian, James Dodson, who also led the congregation in the Profession of Faith.
Mary-Jo Gillilan was the organist and soloist. Special hymns selected were: “On The Wings Of A Dove,” “Home Come On Home,” “The Lord Is My Shepherd,” “Precious Lord Take My Hand,” “One Day At A Time,” “The Last Farewell,” and “J’irai La Voir Un Jour.”
Mrs. Loranger’s daughters, Denise Audet, Gisele Poulin, Madeline Dufault, Judy Dufault, Diane LeRoux and Francine Giroux, placed the pall on her casket and escorted their Mom down the aisle. A poem entitled, “Good Bye For A Little While,” was read by the eldest daughter, Denise Audet. Offertory gifts were presented by granddaughters, Lori Lambert Sandshaw and Lisa Dufault.
Attending were representatives from Cross Consulting Engineers, Franklin County Home Health Agency, J. C. Image Inc., Nana’s Restaurant, Montcalm Real Estate, Brown Cahill, Gawne and Miller, Sisters of Holy Cross and Shantee Point Neighbors.
Interment followed in the Loranger family lot in the St. Albans Point cemetery with committal prayers offered by Father Roy and Seminarian Dodson. A special selection of hymns, including “Amazing Grace,” “Where The Roses Never Fade,” and “I’ll Fly Away,” was provided by granddaughter, Lori Lambert Sandshaw, guitarist and soloist. Casket bearers were sons-in-law: Paul Poulin, Andre‘ Dufault, Robert Dufault, Lenny LeRoux and Raymond Giroux; and grandsons: Andre’ Dufault Jr. and Donald Lambert.
Following the services, the Ladies of St. Anne hosted a luncheon in the Holy Angels Parish Hall. Sunday evening, Father Roy and Seminarian Dodson conducted a prayer service in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.
RITA FLANDERS
East Fairfield

Rita Flanders, age 81, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans with her loving family at her side.
She was born March 1, 1927, in Bakersfield, the daughter of the late Arthur and Maria (Paquette) Gendron.
Rita was a resident of East Fairfield most of life, where she was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and was a member of the East Fairfield Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Her working career started as a cook for the Grampa Read farm where her husband worked. She also worked at George Yett Bag Company, and finally working at Giant Department store in St. Albans, which became Ames Department store, for many years retiring in 1992.
Rita enjoyed having her family together, playing cards, quilting, gardening, canning, going to the woods with her son Raymond, sugaring with her family, trapping with her husband, and berrying with her sisters.
She is survived by her children, Linda Hall and Lisa Rotman of Williston, and Raymond and Donna Flanders of Bakersfield; her grandchildren, Mindy and Gilbert Gagner of Highgate Springs, Daryl Hall of Williston, his children, Britney, Taylor and Seth and their mother, Theresa, all of Highgate Springs, Daren and Lisa Hall of Swanton, Jessica Flanders of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Jamie Flanders - Stenta and Mark Stenta of Bakersfield; two sisters and their husbands, Cecile and Norman Garrett of East Fairfield, and Rose and Henry Lamothe of St. Albans; sisters-in-law, Helen Murphy and her husband, William, and Joyce Flanders, all of Hyde Park; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Diane Andrews; and a special friend, Donna Boucher. Besides her parents, Rita was predeceased by her husband, Delmar Flanders on April 25, 2006. They were married on Nov. 25, 1943. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Gertrude Ashline and Mary Jane Mitchell; a sister-in-law, Freida Jacobs; and a brother-in-law, William Flanders Sr.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in East Fairfield with Reverends Leonidas Laroche, Andre Houle, and Pierre Lavallee con-celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Georges cemetery in Bakersfield.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

GEORGE J. KAVCHAK

George J. Kavchak, 91, a resident of this area for the past nine years, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at his home with his loving family at his side. Born on May 26, 1917, in Port Reading, N.J., George was the son of the late Frank and Mary Kavchak. On April 27, 1938, in St. Mary’s Church in South Amboy, N.J., George married the former Catherine Quinlan, who preceded him in death on July 12, 2007.
Prior to relocating to Vermont, George was employed for many years as a crane operator with the National Lead Company in Sayreville, N.J., owned and operated the East Jersey Lumber and Coal Company in Metuchen, N.J. and then along with his son, “Sonny,” they owned and operated Lincoln Heating and Cooling Company in Jackson, N.J. He enjoyed wine making, hunting and fishing. George also enjoyed listening to, and playing, music. He especially enjoyed playing the harmonica and fiddle and was a former member of the Harmonicats. For several years, George also operated a mink farm in New Jersey. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in St. Albans and a former member of the Odd Fellows in Perth Amboy, N.J.
Survivors include his two daughters, Kathleen Swallick of St. Albans and Barbara Schoen- Jahngen and her husband, Robert, of Colchester; five grandchildren: Scott, Tammy, Tracy, Lorilei and Jack; nine great-grandchildren: Greg, Cory, Sarah, Katy, Jamie, Jessica, Joseph, James and Ashley; two great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; friends: Emily and Alex McDougall of Clark, N.J., and Mary and John Standowski of Jackson, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, and wife Catherine, George was preceded in death by his son, George “Sonny” Kavchak on June 18, 2004; and his son-in-law, Robert J. Swallick on June 1, 2004.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at 11 a.m. in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Church Street with the Reverend Herman Benjamin officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. at the family lot in St. Anthony’s cemetery in Sheldon. George’s family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St.

RAYMOND JOSEPH LAMBERT

Raymond Joseph Lambert, 97, a resident of this area since 1962, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Franklin County Rehab Center following a lengthy illness. Born in Laconia, N.H., on Dec. 26, 1910, Raymond was the son of the late Thomas and Rosie (Racine) Lambert. In 1951 in Burlington, Vt., Raymond married the former Aurore Benoit, who preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 2006.
Raymond was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy in Laconia. He retired in 1962 after 19 years with the Mighty-Mac Clothing Manufacturing in Lawrence, Mass. After his relocating to St. Albans, he became a communicant of Holy Angels Catholic Church, a member of St. Albans Lodge 1566, B.P.O.E., was an avid baseball fan and loved to travel.
Survivors include his niece, Barbara Breton and her husband, Roger of Laconia, N.H.; and two nephews, Richard Lambert and his wife, Sandra, of California, and Henry Valliere of Somersworth, N.H. In addition to his parents, and his wife, Aurore, Raymond was preceded in death by a son, Raymond F. Lambert Jr.; and two brothers, Arthur Lambert and Henry Lambert.
St. Albans Lodge 1566 B.P.O.E. will conduct their ritualistic service on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until the time of the service. A graveside service will be on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart cemetery, Union Avenue, Laconia, N.H.

VINA A. RITCHIE

Vina A. Ritchie, 85, of Martel Lane, died peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008. Vina was born March 9, 1923, in Ripton, Vt. She was the daughter of the late Hoyt and Nora Cram Dimick.
In 1945, she married the love of her life, Gordon Ritchie, but lost him all too soon on March 11, 1959. Vina worked hard all her life in support of her family, being both a mother and father to her children for many years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and her little dog and faithful companion, Cosmo. Vina also took great pleasure working in her garden and pruning her flowers. Her other hobbies included doll collecting, watching old westerns, hunting, fishing and camping. She will be greatly missed by all.
She is survived by her children, Mike and Peg Spernak of Florida, Nora (Pip) and Philip Hale of St. Albans, Gordon Ritchie and Lorri Terrier of Milton, Veda and Ronald Root of Westford, David and Bobbi Jo (BJ) Ritchie of Swanton; 22 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; her stepsisters, Janet Beldon of Hudson Falls, N.Y., and Catherine Smith of New York. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Veda and Milan Adams; her great-grandson, Michael Lawton; and special friends, Bernie Eagan and Charol Marshall.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Audrey Von Lepel for her care and compassion extended to their mother over the past several years.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday evening, Aug. 19, 2008, at 7 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7 in Milton. Visiting hours will be held prior to the services from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Minor Funeral Home. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Cedar Grove cemetery in Fair Haven.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father Thomas D. Nadeau was the celebrant and homilist. Edward Daniel and Joseph Gamache served as Ministers of the Altar. Music was provided by organist and soloist, Claire Chevalier Hungerford.
The White Funeral Pall was draped over Anna’s casket by grandsons, Reg and Randy Vance. Anna’s own personal sick call Crucifix was then placed by her daughter, Elaine Cunningham. Readings from both the Old and New Testament were proclaimed by brother-in-law, Leonard James. The Offertory Gifts were presented by grandchildren, Randy and Leanne Vance, and great-grandchildren, Isaac, Jacob and Rachel Vance.
Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from the Town of Colchester, Green Mountain Nursing Home, Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington represented by The Reverend Monsignor Wendell H. Searles, Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church of Malletts Bay, Parish Communities of St. Amadeus Alburgh and St. Joseph’s Mission Isle La Motte, Sisters of Providence, Grace United Methodist Church including Pastor Kirk Thompson of Essex Junction, The Essex Alliance Church, IBM, Order of the Eastern Star, Swanton Chapter 11, Shore Line Chocolates, and the Visiting Nurse Association.
The Rite of Committal and Interment followed at the James family lot in Bush cemetery, Alburgh Village, with Father Nadeau reading the committal prayers. The bearers were grandsons, Reg and Randy Vance; great-grandsons, Chris and Isaac Vance; and nephews, Allen Shepard and Larry Rochon.
ESTELLE BOYLE HEMPEY SHEPARD

Estelle B. Shepard, 97, died April 14, 2008, at a Bangor Health Care Facility. She was born Feb. 10, 1911, in Montreal, Quebec, the daughter of John P. and Catherine (Kelly) Boyle.
Estelle lived in Montreal until she married Ernest G. Hempey in 1942 and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where their two children were born. Upon the death of her husband in 1949, Estelle moved with her two children to St. Albans. She was married to D. Leonard Shepard of St. Albans from 1970 until his death in 1997. In 2003, she moved to Bangor, Maine.
She is survived by her two children, Richard Hempey and his wife, Rosemary, of Portland, Ore., and Barbara Wardwell of Bangor; four grandchildren: Duncan Wardwell and his wife, Amy, of Richmond, Vt., Ethan Wardwell and his wife, Jennifer, of Hampden, Maine, Matthew Hempey and his wife, Lauren, of California, and Scott Hempey and his wife, Jennifer, of Bolton, Vt.; three great-grandchildren: Quinn and Alex Wardell of Richmond, Vt., and Meara Hempey of California; one sister, Claire Trombley of St. Albans; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout the United States and Canada. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ailleen Ladue and Mildred McLellan; and one brother, John Boyle.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, at 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans, with the Reverend Williams Simmons officiating. Interment will be on Monday, Aug. 18, in the family lot in Notre-Dame-des-Neiges cemetery in Montreal.

Mrs. Anna May James, age 87 years, a lifelong resident of the Alburgh area and more recently of Colchester, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 12, 2008, at the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester.
Born in North Hero on March 2, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Anna (LaPoint) Beshaw. She attended Alburgh schools and on July 16, 1937, married Avon James, who predeceased her on March 23, 1965. Anna was a devoted homemaker and mother and for many years was dedicated to caring for the elderly and people in need.
She leaves her daughter, Elaine Cunningham, of Colchester; two grandsons, Reg Vance and his wife, Lise, of Colchester, and Randy Vance and his wife, Leanne, of Essex; three sisters, Joyce of Starksboro, Hazel of Connecticut, and Theresa of Burlington. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Chris, Heather, Rachel, Isaac, and Jacob; four sisters-in-law: Evelyn McIver of Maine, Phyllis Holbrook of Swanton, Irma James of Alburgh and Irene Beshaw of Essex; three brothers-in-law: Vernon and Leonard James of Alburgh, and Allyn James of Burlington; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Anna was predeceased by four brothers: Arthur, Charles, Roy and Fred Beshaw; three sisters, Dorothy, Elizabeth and Eva; a son-in-law, David Cunningham; and sisters- and brothers-in-law: Clara, Ruth and Eileen James, Ralph Rochon, Donald, Kenneth, Eldon and Alton James, and Kathryn and Paul Paquette.
