DOCTOR MICHAEL V. CONTE
QUAKERTOWN, Pa. / SWANTON, Vt.
8/19/2008

Doctor Michael V. Conte passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, shortly after competing in the Lehigh Valley Steelman Triathlon in Quakertown, Pa. He was a good person, kind and gentle. To those of us who truly knew him, nothing more need be said.

Mike was an outstanding athlete who received the Vermont State Athlete of the Month Award three times at a time when high school and college athletes were ranked together in each category. He was self-taught and self-coached in track and X-Country since there was no track team at his high school. At Springfield College (Massachusetts) Michael established track records and was a member several times on the All New England Track and Field Team and on the All New England Soccer Team. While he was a member of the Boston Track Club he was invited to become a member of the Florida Track Club in Gainesville, Fla. where he trained and ran with Marty Liqouri, Barry Brown, Frank Shorter, Byron Dyce and Brookes Johnson among many others. In those years he participated several times in the Penn Relays and three times at Madison Square Garden. He was also a National Pentathlon champion and a National Indoor 3000 meter champion. Mike’s own hopes of many years to compete in the Olympics were dashed by a sudden illness when competing in the Olympic Trials.

While in Florida with the Florida Track Club, he was mentored by Dr. Robert Cade, inventor of Gatorade, and along with several other nationally ranked track and field athletes, assisted Dr. Cade in his research. Mike appeared with Dr. Cade in an article in the 1982 edition of World Book Science Year.

From this experience and at Dr. Cade’s suggestion, Mike decided to pursue and completed a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology. Michael published four medical research papers, one of which was presented at the International Conference of Nephrology in Athens Greece in 1981. Upon receiving his Masters Degree he left Florida and entered the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia. Following graduation he established a podiatric medical practice in Pennsylvania where he has been for the past 22 years.

If friends are a family one establishes for oneself, Mike established a family in Pennsylvania, for he was beloved by his colleagues, patients, and the young people and their parents whom he helped by encouraging their athletic and other aspirations. In addition to Mike’s successes in athletics and medicine, he made successful appearances with his parents in vocal concerts, along with recital performances of his own. He had a lovely “tenore di grazia” voice. Patients are saying … “and what a voice; now he’ll sing with the angels.” Also, “He’d sing to my mother when she was nervous about being in the office, and she came to look forward to her visits with him.” A friend recently said of him: “A true renaissance man, comfortable in both science and the arts.” Another friend writes: “A true friend, a gifted and compassionate physician, a renaissance man with a tremendous sense of humor and an equally great love of life. ‘It’s not what you take when you leave this world behind you; it’s what you leave behind when you’re gone’. Doc left this world a better place because of his presence in it and how he touched our lives. His memory will live in my heart forever. Peace, my friend until we meet again!”

Michael is survived by his father and mother, Charles and Elizabeth Conte; his brother, Christopher and his wife, Gale, and their two children, Kristin and Lauren; his sister, Susan Conte and her children, Matthew and Maia; and his sister, Nina Conte; and several cousins.

A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at 2 p.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, 05488 (868-3331). The Reverend Stanley Irving, Rector Emeritus of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in St. Albans, will officiate. Interment will be private and at the Convenience of the family.
