She was born in Greenfield, MA, July 14, 1934, daughter of the late Arthur and Geneva (Susie) (Call) Purington of Colrain, MA.
She grew up in Colrain and was educated in Colrain schools and at Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls, MA. After her family moved to Halifax in 1951, she met Lewis M. Corse at a square dance. In addition to her life on the farm she was a longtime blood donor until cancer made her ineligible. She had donated more than 15 gallons of blood. In her later years she also was a regular volunteer at Red Cross blood drives in Brattleboro. For several years Mrs. Corse enjoyed playing her dulcimer for the residents of area retirement homes. She bowled in the Thursday night league at Northstar Bowl in Wilmington for more than 35 years and served as a Whitingham ballot clerk for many years. She and Lewis were avid square dancers at local square dances and also enjoyed attending the Hunter Mountain music festival for many years. Margaret M. Schoenknecht
TORRINGTON, CT - Margaret M. Schoenknecht, 90, died peacefully July 29, at Litchfield Woods Health Care Center.
Mrs. Schoenknecth was the widow of Walter R. Schoenknecht and a former resident of Litchfield, Branford, East Haven, and Cornwall.
She was born August 5, 1917 in Karuizawa, Japan, the daughter of American engineer, Robert Faulkner Moss and Sybil Howard Moss. She was raised in Japan and was a graduate of the American School in Japan. Her first trip to U.S. shores was her trip to college by ocean liner. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Scripps College in Claremont, CA, followed by a master’s degree from the Yale University School of Nursing. She was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, serving as a nurse in the Pacific Theater in a medical unit from Yale.
While at Yale, Mrs. Schoenknecht met her future husband, Walt, at the New Haven Outing Club. They married in 1946 after returning from the war. Walt was an entrepreneur and ski industry pioneer and she was very much his partner; the “woman behind the man.” She helped him build and run Mohawk Mountain, in Cornwall, which opened in 1947, and Mount Snow, VT, which opened in 1955. She had a good business sense and was, in many ways, responsible for the success of both resorts. Much of the time, she ran Mohawk Mountain as Walt forged ahead with Mount Snow. She was a lifelong avid skier, having learned in Japan, then skiing during her Yale years and in New Zealand during her Army enlistment. She skied until she was 81. She was an integral part of Mohawk Mountain her entire life.
In addition, she was an active traveler, camper, hiker, and outdoor enthusiast. She was a camp counselor, scout leader, and volunteer, mentor and friend. Her Girl Scout troops were legendary with laughter, travels, and creativity. She lovingly raised five children and loved, inspired, and nurtured many others along the way. She loved cats and owls and most of the other critters that arrived at her home.
She loved creating and caring for her gardens. She prized her flowers and didn’t get too upset when her kids cut the ones destined for the garden club show. She never did get the hang of just planting one zucchini plant.
Mrs. Schoenknecht’s greatest talent was handcrafts. She was largely self-taught and her curiosity led her to explore many different genres. She built a sailboat in the garage and was the handywoman of the house. She painted, designed, hammered, knit, and stitched. She became a talented pewtersmith. But her great love was needlework:crewel, needlepoint, sewing, and especially quilting. She was an Embroiderer’s Guild of America “Master Quilter,” a frequent teacher and judge, a creative designer and quiltmaker.
Mrs. Schoenknecht was active with Literacy Volunteers, The Women’s Club, VNS, the Red Cross, the Girl Scouts, Embroiderer’s Guild, Shoreline Quilters Guild, the Women in the Military Memorial, and countless other causes. She made quilts for raffles and babies and lent a helping hand to friends in need.
Mrs. Schoenknecht is survived by daughter Carol Lugar, of Cornwall, and three sons, Gary, of Winsted, Robert, of Rutland, VT, and Richard, of Yelm, WA. A son Donald, is deceased. She also leaves grandson Dana Lugar, of South Carolina; and granddaughters Kara Lugar, of Montana, Ashley Schoenknecht, of Boston MA, Cassie Schoenknecht, of Torrington, and Kerry Schoenknecht, of West Virginia. She is survived by a brother, Richard Moss, of Ecuador and wife, Ruby. Her other siblings are deceased. She also leaves a much-loved cousin, Laura Johnson, and her husband Neal, of South Carolina; a sister-in-law, nieces, nephews, numerous other relatives, her wonderful caregivers, especially Deborah Sanford, of Litchfield, many good friends and “Mauja,” her St. Bernard “grand-dog.”
No memorial service is planned. Memorial donations may be sent to: the Women’s Fund at the Community Foundation of Northwest Connecticut (Torrington,), Hospice and VNS, Women in the Military Memorial (Washington, DC), the Girl Scouts, the Shoreline Quilters Guild (Branford).
The family may be contacted at P.O. Box 176, Cornwall, CT 06753.
