Mr. Bate was born in New York City on January 3, 1929, the oldest son of Henry Clay and Geneve Cole Bate, part of an old American family extending back to colonial times, and including ancestors General Thomas Sumter of Revolutionary War fame, General William Brimage Bate, a post Civil War governor and later Senator of Tennessee, and Dr. Humphrey Bate, an early country music star and founding father of the Grand Ole Opry.

Mr. Bate spent his youth in Rye, NY, graduating from the town’s high school in 1946. From an early age, he demonstrated an extraordinary talent in the performing arts. He was celebrated for his acting roles in many local theater productions, and was a skilled jazz musician, playing the trumpet professionally from his early teens. It was in Rye that Mr. Bate also began his lifelong passion for the sea.

He attended Tufts University on an NROTC scholarship, where he continued to perform in the school’s productions. After graduating in 1950 with a degree in drama, he joined the Navy, where he served in the Korean War and attained the rank of lieutenant jg. Following the war, he pursued a master’s degree in drama at Stanford University.

Mr. Bate began his career as an actor on the West Coast, where he played lead roles at the Wharf Theater in Monterey, CA. He then moved to New York, where he performed Off-Broadway, as well as in television and radio. In 1959 he became a television director and producer in the early days of the advertising industry. His skill in the new field was quickly acknowledged with his earliest commercials winning CLIO awards from the New York Directors Guild, and international honors at the Cannes, Venice and Irish Film Festivals.

During most of his career in New York, Mr. Bate and his family lived in Riverside. He was an avid sailor and developed a keen interest in skiing.

Attracted by the beauty of Vermont, he purchased a home in Wilmington in 1969. Mr. Bate continued to work in advertising until 1990 when he left to follow his other life’s passion, embarking on a second career as a licensed sea captain. During this time, he lived aboard his sailboat, Halcyon, splitting time between the Connecticut coast and Miami Beach, with frequent visits to his house in Vermont.

After moving full time to Wilmington in 1993, Mr. Bate continued for a time as a freelance sea captain. He also returned to the stage, appearing as Father Jack in a 1996 production of “Dancing at Lughnasa” by the Actors Theater Playhouse in West Chesterfield, NH. Mr. Bate’s last job before full retirement was at BCTV in Brattleboro, where he directed live programming and did voice-overs from 1999 until 2002.

Mr. Bate was always an active photographer, building an impressive portfolio of artistic shots of maritime and natural scenes, some of which were featured in a 2002 exhibit at the Baber Gallery in Jamaica. Mr. Bate also enjoyed writing, taking mischievous pleasure in crafting and reciting his off-color limericks and poetry for friends and family. He was a consummate entertainer throughout his life. Whether at home, at social gatherings, or perched on his favorite barstool, he delighted everyone around him with his terrific wit, a superb sense of comedic timing, and a sharp intellect honed by voracious reading.
