Harry Charles Appel
BENNINGTON- Harry Charles Appel passed away on February 14. Mr. Appel was born on April 19,1915 in Weehawken, NJ. He also lived in Staten Island, NY, and served in WWII. First a sales manager in New York City, he became a pastry chef and the proprietor of Paris Pastry Shop in Ridgewood, NJ. Mr. Appel raised his family of four children with his wife, Betty Templeton Appel, in Glen Rock, NJ.
Since childhood, Mr. Appel vacationed at Lake Raponda with his family. He chose Whitingham to be his home in retirement. He loved music and creative projects. In addition to playing and writing music, he enjoyed doing artwork and creating cartoons.
He will be missed by his wife of 60 years, and their children, Elodee Gates and her husband Larry, of Boulder, CO, Merylee Appel, and her husband Charles Freeman, of Thorton, CO, Lorelle Gormley and her husband Michael, of Lanoka Harbor, NJ, and Randall Appel and his wife Trish (Daniels), of Wilmington; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.A celebration of Mr. Appel’s life will be held early spring at a date to be announced. Steven Joseph Rogers
READSBORO- Steven Joseph Rogers, 56, of Readsboro, died at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Greenfield, MA, on October 28, 1951 and was a graduate of Greenfield Tech High. He was a military policeman in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Mr. Rogers loved his family, and his children were his pride and joy. He also loved all kinds of arts and crafts, metal detecting, and fishing.
He is survived by his daughter Stephanie Jean Rogers, of Boston, MA; his son, Eric John Rogers, of Readsboro; his mother, Gertrude Rogers, of Greenfield, MA; a brother, Jack Rogers, of Keene, NH; two sisters, Suzanne Rogers, of West Deerfield, MA, and Mary Rogers, of Florida; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation for Mr. Rogers was held on Friday, February 15. A reception followed at the Readsboro American Legion. Clara J. Kaufmann
BENNINGTON- Clara J. Kaufmann, affectionately known as “Oma,” of Crosstown Road, died peacefully Sunday, March 23, at Prospect Nursing Home.
Mrs. Kaufmann was born in Lohr am Main, Germany on May 4, 1919, the daughter of the late Josef and Clara (Wirth) Schmitt. She grew up in Germany where she received her education. She continued her education in Wurzberg where she studied pediatric nursing. Clara used her nursing training in many orphanages during WWII and following the war she cared for her ailing parents.
In August of 1955 she emigrated to the United States where she married Urban Kaufmann at St. Joseph’s Church in New York City on September 26, 1955. They had been corresponding by mail for several years prior to their marriage. Mr. Kaufmann passed away on November 24, 1968. They had made their home in the Bronx, NY, for many years and in January of 1972, Mrs. Kaufmann relocated to Happy Haven Road in Wilmington, along with her son Richard, and resided there until October 1983 when they moved to their present location on Crosstown Road in Dover.
She was a devout Catholic, a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Wilmington where she was a member of the Ladies Guild. She was grateful for the presence of the MOOver bus, which enabled her to be active with the senior meals program which she thoroughly enjoyed, and the retired senior volunteer program where she volunteered with the blood pressure clinic.
Mrs. Kaufman enjoyed all types of crafts including knitting, and loved to cook and bake. She will always be remembered for her famous cakes, Christmas cookies, and her abundant Halloween trick or treat bags.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Richard and Catherine Kaufmann, of West Dover; a daughter, Justine Bajardi, of O’Fallon, MO; grandchildren, Christine and husband Christopher Presley, Elizabeth Bajardi and fiancé Christian Daley, Bernard Bajardi, II and his wife Ryanne, and Mary and Thomas Kaufmann; and two great-grandchildren, Alexis Bajardi and Lawrence Willis.
In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her brothers Michael, Franz, and Josef and sisters Else, Anna, and Maria. A Mass of Christian death and burial will be celebrated Saturday March 29, at 10 am, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Wilmington. Interment will be held later in the spring in the family lot in Gate of Heaven cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. Visiting hours will be held Friday, March 28, from 7 to 9 pm, at Covey & Allen Funeral Home, 44 East Main Street, Wilmington.

Raymond P. Bernard
GREENFIELD, MA- Raymond P. Bernard, 71, a resident of Bernard Road in Jacksonville, died Wednesday, March 19, at Franklin Medical Center.
Mr. Bernard was born in Greenfield on June 17, 1936, the son of Francis and Olive (Welch) Bernard. He received his education at Greenfield schools and graduated from Greenfield High School.
Mr. Bernard worked as a machine mechanic for many years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and watching wrestling on television. He enjoyed and participated in the sport of boxing and liked watching and following the Boston Red Sox.
He leaves his wife of 38 years, the former Sarah Sessions, of Jacksonville, whom he married June 19, 1970; his sons, Michael Bernard and his wife Sara, of Townshend, VT, and Paul Bernard and his wife Candie, of Stratton; his daughters, Melissa Fitzpatrick and her companion Jeffrey Fitzpatrick, and Wendy Fitzpatrick and her companion Todd Brooks, both of Wardsboro; his sister, Jeanette Miskolczi; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his former wife Laura (Jones) Brissette whom he married in June, 1958; nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.

Kendra J. Rafus
WEST HALIFAX- Kendra Jean Rafus, 45, of Hubbard Hill Road, died Friday, March 21, at her home, surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Rafus was born in Brattleboro on December 13, 1962, the daughter of Kenneth and Jeanette (Squires) Shield.
She was raised and educated in Guilford and was a graduate of Brattleboro Union High School, class of 1980.
For the past four years she had been employed as office manager for Environmental Compliance Services in Brattleboro. Previously she worked at Brattleboro Savings & Loan Association as secretary to bank president George Haynes. She also worked for C.E. Bradley Labs in Brattleboro. She was a communicant of Saint Michael’s Roman Catholic Church.
She enjoyed crocheting, cross stitching, classic cars, and attending regional car shows, as well as watching car races at Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, NH. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed entertaining her many friends. A faithful and devoted wife and loving mother, she cherished time spent with her family.
On March 17, 2001, in Guilford, she was married to Bradley T. Rafus who survives.
She also leaves her son, Matthew Belanger, of West Halifax, and his close friend Leah Murdock, of Jacksonville; her mother, of Brattleboro; brother Kenneth R. Shield Jr., of Guilford; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her father in March of 1989.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, March 26, at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Brattleboro. Burial in Baker cemetery in Guilford will take place in the spring when the cemetery reopens.

Joseph J. Mowe
NORTH ADAMS, MA- Joseph J. Mowe, 94, of 229 Protection Avenue, and formerly of 131 River Road, Monroe Bridge, died Saturday, March 22, at Sweetbrook Care Center, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Hoosac Tunnel on October 4, 1913, a son of the late Augustine A. Mowe and Pasqualina (DeMayo) Mowe. He graduated from Arms Academy in Shelburne Falls.
Mr. Mowe was a veteran of World War II and served in the United States Army in the European Theater. He participated in the Rome-Arno campaign and received the European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with one Bronze Star.
He was last employed by the Deerfield Glassine Company in Monroe for 44 years until his retirement as a foreman.
He was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church.
Mr. Mowe was active in the town of Monroe, serving as a selectman for 33 years; 22 years as chief of police; and water commissioner for 50 years. He was active in politics with the Democratic party and attended two Democratic conventions in Washington, DC as a delegate.
Mr. Mowe was also a member of the Walter Case Post #29 American Legion in Readsboro, VT. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid Boston Red Sox baseball fan and enjoyed playing cards.
His wife, the former Lena K. Simonetti, died on February 27, 1998. They were married on June 3, 1939, in St. Joachim’s Church in Readsboro, VT.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol L. Monette and her husband, Raymond, of North Adams, and Donna M. Mowe, of North Adams; three grandchildren, Terri Guetti, of West Boylston, Kristina Guetti, and Jana Boyer and her husband Matthew, of North Adams; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Boillat, Taylor Boillat, Molly Boyer, and Alexander Boyer; two brothers, Augustine Mowe, of Hoosac Tunnel, and Arthur Mowe, of Bennington, VT; one sister, Margaret Sucharzewski, of Hoosac Tunnel; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Mowe and Francis Mowe, and two sisters, Marion Degara and Florence Mowe.
A funeral was held on Tuesday, March 25, from Flynn and Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, followed by a Mass at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial followed in Southview cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Sweetbrook activities fund or to the St. Anthony Capital Campaign in care of the funeral home.
Christian H. Nikoloff
BENNINGTON- Christian H. Nikoloff, 72, formerly of West Dover, died peacefully Wednesday, March 19, at the Vermont Veterans Home.
Mr. Nikoloff was born in Bulgaria on September 27, 1936, the son of Gladwyn V. and Emilia (Dotcheva) Nikoloff, and attended local schools. Upon moving to the United States, he graduated from high school in New York City, was a 1959 graduate of the New York State Maritime College with a bachelor of science in maritime transportation and weather. He entered the U. S. Navy Merchant Marine and was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during the Cuban Blockage. He retired from United States Lines as a ship captain in 1986 and then piloted cargo ships around the world. He enjoyed skiing, golf, fishing, and his vegetable gardens, and piloted his own airplane.
Mr. Nikoloff is survived by two cousins, Martha D. Jackson, of South Attleboro, MA, and Joseph Zaplishny, of Lakeland, FL; and very dear friends John and Jane Smith and their family, of Trenton, NJ. He was preceded in death by his brother Stefan Nickoloff. At Mr. Nikoloff’s request there will be no funeral services.

Michael Richard Moore
INDIAN LAKE, NY- Michael Moore, 52, of Crow Hill Road, and formerly of Wilmington, VT, died Friday, April 18, at Glens Falls Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on February 27, 1956, in Charleston, SC, he was the son of Lorraine J. Wardell Moore and the late Richard H. “Rip” Moore. He married Brenda Locke on November 12, 1977, at the United Methodist Church of Indian Lake.
As a young man, Mr. Moore worked as a logger with his father. He then worked as a long-distance truck driver at the NYS Department of Transportation in Indian Lake. He enjoyed cooking on his gas grill, socializing with his family and many friends, and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Cedar River Golf Course.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Brenda Moore; his mother, Lorraine Moore, of Indian Lake; his maternal grandmother, Marjorie Wardell, of North Creek; two daughter, Melinda Brouthers and her husband Jeffrey and Lindsey Moore, all of Indian Lake; one son, Josh Moore, of Indian Lake; two grandchildren, Molly and Joseph Brouthers; one sister, Lori Pratt and her husband, Glen, of Hudson Falls; two brothers, Dan Moore and his wife Lisa, of Cedar River, and Justin Moore and his wife Carrie, of Sabael; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Moore was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Howard and Dorothy Moore, who lived in South Newfane, VT.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 23, at the Miller Funeral Home.
Burial was held in the Cedar River cemetery in Indian Lake. Contributions may made to the Indian Lake Ambulance Corps, Indian Lake, NY 12842.
Mary D. Jillson
WHITINGHAM- Mary D. Jillson, 75, a resident of Burrington Hill Road, in Whitingham, died Monday, May 5, at her home.
Mrs. Jillson was born in Whitingham on March 25, 1933, the daughter of David and Carrie (Pitcher) Dix. She received her education in Whitingham schools and graduated from Whitingham High School class of 1952.
Mrs. Jillson worked for Woodshapes for two years and ran her own day care for about 10 years. She was very active in the Ladies Benevolent Society, helping with cooking, rummage sales, and white elephant sales and was also a member of the Community Church of Whitingham. She cherished spending time with her family, especially her son and grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, making receiving blankets for babies, crocheting, and embroidering. She knitted sweaters, hats, and mittens for R.S.V.P. in Brattleboro.
Mrs. Jillson is survived by her husband Carl W. “Butch” Jillson III, of Whitingham, whom she married at their home on January 23, 1982; her son, Ronald Colburn, of Whitingham; her daughters, Juanita Stewart and her husband Robert, of Whitingham, and Teri Colburn, of Palm Harbor, FL; her brother Sanford Dix, of Whitingham; her sister, Elsie Reynolds, of Brattleboro; her grandchildren, Jessie Stewart, Holly Cunningham, Matt Stewart, Marsha, Ashley, and Logan Sprague; and her great-granddaughter, Bailey Boyce. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hollis Colburn, who died August 26, 1980; four brothers, Homer, Frank, John, and David Dix; and her sister Violet Hurd.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jillson will be held Friday, May 9, at 11 am, at the Community Church of Whitingham. Pastor John Brigham will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the family lot in Sadawga cemetery in Whitingham. Visiting hours at Covey & Allen Funeral Home, 44 East Main Street, in Wilmington, will be held Thursday, May 8, from 6 to 8 pm, where the family will be in attendance. Robert F. Roy Sr.
WEST HALIFAX- Robert F. Roy Sr. passed away May 25, at his home.
Born in Danville on September 22, 1943, he was the son of the late Paul and Evelyn Stanford Roy. Mr. Roy started work on construction at a very young age. He also worked for a while at Mount Snow in West Dover, then returned to driving a truck for construction companies until his health forced him to retire in 2006. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. He also loved his family dearly.
He leaves his wife, the former Judith A. Brewer, whom he married in 1962. Besides his wife he leaves three children, Robert F. Roy Jr., of Spofford, NH; Sandie and Charles Cunningham, of Halifax; and Cheryl and Jason Wincek, of Halifax; seven grandchildren and a great-grandson, born on May 25 his brother, Paul Roy Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Searsburg; and his sisters Carol and husband, Chuck Bernal, of Searsburg; and Marylin and Kermit Dwyer, of St. Johnsbury.
He also leaves many dear friends, including Edward “Buster” Wheeler who stayed with him 24/7 during his final weeks helping the family care for him; and close friends Mark Barlow and Ron “Tinman” Smith, who spent many hours visiting and helping him. He was predeceased by his beloved dog Jake, who was his constant companion.
Committal services will be Saturday, May 31, at 11 am, at the Danville cemetery. Everyone is welcome to join in celebrating his life. There will be no calling hours. Donations may be made to Hospice, 1 Holstein Place, Suite 311, Brattleboro, VT 05301-0311.
William F. Rush
WARDSBORO- William F. Rush, 87, of 104 Main Street, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, June 17, where he was in the loving care of his wife.
Born in Ipswich, England, on April 14, 1921, he was the son of Edward and Ada Watts (Sansom) Rush.
Mr. Rush grew up and attended schools in Ipswich. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the RAF from 1941 to 1946, based at RAF Glatton, Peterborough, as a Leading Air Craftsman. He was awarded the War Medal 1939-1945, and the Defense Medal, and was recognized by his commanding officer for his supervision of German POWs. After the war he worked for the Eastern Electricity Board in Norwich, England, and then emigrated to the United States in 1957 with his wife and two young sons.
He was employed at Moore and Thompson’s paper mill in Bellows Falls, then later became a member of the Teamsters Union and spent 28 years working at St. Johnsbury Trucking in Westminster.
Many people knew Mr. Rush through his longtime passion and commitment to helping and taking care of lost and abandoned animals. He was president of the Animal Protective Society of Bellows Falls and a volunteer for the Windham County Humane Society. He was involved in the humane cause long before the societies known today were established. His charming manner and “dry” English humor will be greatly missed by everyone.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Rita D S (Henry), whom he married July 10, 1948 in Thorpe-St-Andrew, Norwich, England.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Paul Rush, and his companion Christel Holden, of Wardsboro; a brother, Ralph Rush, of Ipswich, England; as well as many relatives both here and in England.
He was predeceased by a son, Martyn; and two brothers, Frank Rush and John Rush. Following Mr. Rush’s wishes, after cremation he will be buried at the convenience of the family.
