Mary Ruth (Plouffe) Vinci
CORNWALL — Mary Ruth (Plouffe) Vinci, 54, died Oct. 9, 2007, after a battle with melanoma. She was born in Burlington on June 25, 1954.
She grew up on her family’s farm in Cornwall and graduated from Middlebury Union High School I 1972 and from O’Brien’s School of Cosmetology in 1973.
She moved to Palatka, Fla., in 1977. While living in Palatka, she worked for the St. John’s River Water Management District and was active with the Palatka Jaycees. After a brief stay in St. Augustine, Fla., she moved back to Vermont in 2001 and married John “Marty” Vinci. There she made an impact on many children’s lives by working as a teacher’s aide for children with special needs. In May, she relocated to Snellville, Ga.
According to family, she enjoyed traveling, camping, boating, fishing, golf and especially chatting with friends and family.
She is survived by her mother, Lena Plouffe of Welaka, Fla.; husband, Marty Vinci, of Snellville; two sons, Brian Bourdeau of Auburn, Ala., and Jared Bourdeau of Palm Coast, Fla.; two step-children, Martin Vinci of Alpharetta, Ga., and Katie Vinci of Boston; and two daughters-in-law, Colleen Bourdeau and Jennifer Ortisi Vinci.
A memorial service was held on Oct. 13, at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka, Fla.
There will be a graveside service Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery in Middlebury. A gathering of family and friends will be held after the service at the Cornwall Congregational Church.
Andrew Johnson Sayre
BRISTOL — Andrew Johnson Sayre died unexpectedly on October 8th, at his home in New York City. He was born on September 15, 1978, in Evanston, Illinois. When he was three, his family moved to Bristol, Vermont.
He earned his high school diploma the Hyde School, in Bath, Maine, and his college diploma from Northeastern University, in Boston, Massachusetts.
He advanced rapidly in his career, first at Fleet Bank in Boston, then at Credit Suisse First Boston, and finally at Celtic Pharma, in New York City. He was a whiz at math and economics, and he enjoyed the challenge of solving complex financial problems, by creating mathematical models to predict risk and return. He loved and respected his colleagues at Celtic Pharma, and believed strongly in the noble purpose, which their enterprise was striving to achieve.
Andrew loved sports, particularly lacrosse, soccer, baseball, and downhill skiing. He especially enjoyed team sports, and formed many lasting friendships from among his teammates over the years.
He had a quick wit, a wry sense of humor, and he enjoyed telling, and hearing, good stories.
He always had a kind word, and a friendly smile, for all those he knew. He believed every person was deserving of respect and dignity. He was honorable and decent. He was hardworking. He was loyal to his friends and to his family. He was a leader his entire life, and he inspired others to do their best. He had a good soul.
For all these reasons, he was loved and respected by virtually all who knew him.
But like us all, he had his weaknesses as well as his strengths. The weakness he struggled to overcome was addiction. He was strong, but ultimately, not strong enough to sustain lasting recovery. Sometimes the heart understands reasons which reason does not.
Those who knew his struggle, loved and respected him all the more.
We miss him, and we will hold dearly our memories of him, secure in belief that he is now at peace, and that in due course, we will be together with him again.
Andrew is survived his special friend, Shelly Weinz. By his mother Carolyn, of Evanston, Illinois, by his father William and his life’s partner, Sandra Dragon, of Bristol. Also by his grandparents William and Ruthann Sayre, of Arlington Heights, Illinois, Andrew Johnson, of New Haven, and Evangelyn Johnson, of Shelburne. By his sisters Alice and Ann of Evanston, Illinois. By his sister Elizabeth, and her son Michael, of Bristol. And by his many aunts, uncles, and cousins
A memorial service for Andrew will be held at the Federated Church in Bristol, on Saturday, November 3rd, at 11 o’clock in the morning.
For those who so desire, memorials may be made to the Federated Church, in Bristol, or the Valley Vista Drug Rehab Center, in Bradford, Vermont.
Stanley M. Perry
HANCOCK — Stanley M. Perry, 90, died Oct. 26, 2007, at Menig Extended Care Facility in Randolph. He was born Sept. 24, 1917, in Granville, the son of Llewellyn and Harriet (Pecor) Perry.
He graduated from Rochester High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Lesleigh Amlaw in Brandon on Oct. 21, 1950. He worked as a welder at the naval shipyard in South Portland Maine, and as production manager for Weyerhauser for 49 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the Community Church of Hancock-Granville, VFW Howard Perry Post 765, and Rural Lodge 29 F&AM of Rochester. According to family, he enjoyed gardening and traveling.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Jean Middleton of Springfield and Anne Perry of El Paso, Texas; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Pearl, Earl, Llewellyn, Howard and Lloyd Perry; and his sisters, Hazel Long and Agnes Boutell.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Community Church of Hancock-Granville, the Rev. Wayne Holsman officiating.
Private burial will be held in Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center.

Archie Flower
MIDDLEBURY and WINOOSKI — Archie Flower, 84, of Winooski died Oct. 29, 2007, surrounded by his family at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born on Feb. 6, 1923, in Woodstock to Archibald and Margaret (Marsh) Flower.
He worked as a cook at the Woodstock Inn, Bonnie Oaks in Fairlee and the Middlebury Inn. During his retirement he was always spotted about town with the city bus schedules memorized and a kind word for all he met chiseled with his sharp wit.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, George and Karoline Flower of Enosburg, Marion and David Surprenant of Jericho, Peg and Keith Powers of Cornwall, Katherine Flower of Plano, Texas, Emily Amory of Middlebury, and Archibald Flower IV of Middlebury; two sisters, Marie Starrs of Provo, Utah, and Kathleen Fitzpatrick of Camden, Maine; two brothers, Elliot Flower of Woodstock, and Alan Flower of Camden, Maine; 17 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Fran Callahan and Peg Hinckley; and one brother, Thomas Flower.
Friends may call at the Boucher and Pritchard Funeral Home, 85 N. Winooski Ave. in Burlington on Thursday, Nov.1, from 6 to 8 p.m.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 2, in St. Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park cemetery in South Burlington.

Ernest W. Dahlin Jr.
SHELBURNE — Ernest W. Dahlin Jr., 84, formerly of East Middlebury, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, at Fletcher Allen Healthcare in Burlington. Born in Rutland on Jan. 16, 1923, he was the son of Ernest W. and Elsie (New) Dahlin Sr.
His early years were spent in Mendon, moving with his family to East Middlebury when his parents bought what is now the Waybury Inn in 1927.
He was a graduate of Middlebury High School, class of 1940. After working at Shackett’s Store as a clerk and delivery man, he attended and graduated from Bay Path Business School in 1942.
From 1942 until 1945 he served in the United States Marine Corps, initially at Marine Headquarters, Washington, D.C., then on Guadalcanal and later in Okinawa.
From 1945 until 1979 he was production manager at Addison Press, publisher of the Addison Independent, where he saw the evolution of printing technologies from hot lead to modern presses. Former co-workers remember Ernie’s dry sense of humor and mild manner and recall him as a patient teacher.
Later he served as editor of Ayrshire Digest in Brandon for several years. He was past president of Vermont Printers Association.
He married Jessie (Kirby) on June 14, 1947, who preceded him in death Sept. 26, 2001. In retirement they traveled throughout 45 states. He became an active member of Otter Valley Good Sam’s Club.
During retirement years he worked as a guide at Shelburne Museum for 21 years.
Family members include two sons, Warren and his wife Lena Dahlin of Williston, and Barry and his wife Karen Dahlin of Weybridge; one daughter, Ellen and her husband Bill Tantlinger of Fletcher; five grandchildren, Santha Dahlin, Rick Fletcher, Sally Dahlin, Jason, Kim and Lori Tantlinger; and four great-grandchildren, Hayley, Aidan, Aislinn and Gavin Fletcher.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, A. Edwin Dahlin, and a sister, Jane MacIntyre.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the East Middlebury United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jill Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Prospect cemetery in East Middlebury.

Gilbert C. Clark Sr.
BRISTOL — Gilbert C. Clark Sr., 53, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on Nov. 19, 1953, in Middlebury, the son of Charles and Arlene Dow Clark Sr.
He is survived by his fiancée, Helen Pierce of Bristol; four children, Gilbert M. Clark and Rena of Glover, Christina Eubar and Jamie of Forestdale, Gilbert C. Clark Jr. and Allison of Salisbury, and Jennifer Clark and friend Edward Hutchins of Whiting; two brothers, Chester Clark and companion Debbie of Bethel, and Andrew Clark and wife Gloria of Northfield; five sisters, Helen Barrows and husband Clifford of Vergennes, Linda White and husband Ronald of Vergennes; Shirley Barrows and husband Ray of Starksboro; Yvonne Lafrance and husband Moe of St. Albans; Danna Lunn and husband Roger of Spring Valley, Ill.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Arlene and Charles Clark; five brothers and sisters, Rodney, Charles Clark Jr., Audrey, Betty and Joyce; and an adopted daughter, Mary Ann.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Victory Baptist Church in Vergennes. Interment will be in Maple cemetery in Lincoln.

Ellen Noonan
ADDISON — Ellen Noonan, 64, died unexpectedly on Oct. 23. 2007, at her home in London, England. She was the daughter of Lois C. and the late Frederick Noonan.
She is survived by her mother, and her brother, Frederick W. Noonan of Addison.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
