Helen Frances Cyr

PENN YAN, N.Y./BRISTOL, Vt. — Helen Frances Cyr, 85, of Bristol, Vt., and Penn Yan, N.Y., died at the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home on Saturday, May 16, 2009, after a lengthy Illness.

She was born Sept. 5, 1923, in Bristol, the daughter of Alfred and Gertrude Hagan. She attended schools in Bristol.

On Sept. 28, 1942, she married Andrew Cyr at St. Ambrose Church in Bristol. They began their married lives in Bristol, later moving to the family farm in New Haven, where they resided until 1957, when they returned to Bristol.

She was employed and retired from Drake, Smith & Co. in Bristol. Relatives say her greatest loves were her family, her flowers and her church.

She is survived by six children, James Cyr and his wife Penny of Ferrisburgh, Janet Edwards and her husband Robert of Penn Yan, N.Y., Edward Cyr and his wife Susan of Shelburne, Phillip Cyr of Bristol, Yvonne Habberfield and her husband Donald of Penn Yan, and Patricia Richardson and her husband Mark of Penn Yan; a sister, Alfreda LaFrance and her husband Osborne of Bristol; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew; a sister, Gladys Hagen; two grandchildren; a great-grandson; and three nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon on Saturday, May 23, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol. Interment will be at Mount St. Joseph cemetery in Bristol. Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol on Friday, May 22, from 5 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Penn Yan Manor Nursing Home, 655 Liberty St., Penn Yan, NY 14527.

Jean F. Benjamin

BRISTOL — Jean F. Benjamin, 80, died Monday, May 18, 2009, at her home in Bristol surrounded by her family.

She was born May 19, 1928, in Lisbon, N.H., the daughter of Dominic and Millie (Cotes) Fillian.

She attended school in Woodsville, N.H., and graduated from Farmington High School in Farmington, Conn. She married Dewey Ray Benjamin on July 3, 1948. Her hobbies were square dancing, sewing, fishing, and spending time with her family.

She is survived by two children, Lynda Cobb and her husband Robert of Waltham, and James “Benji” Benjamin and his wife Kathleen of Bristol; three granddaughters; a sister, Ruth Fellows of Connecticut; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Suydam of Connecticut and Ivis Masterson of Lincoln; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Dewey Benjamin on Oct. 24, 1999.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 22, at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Interment will be in Maple cemetery in Lincoln. Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol on Thursday, May 21, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Allen Leonard Atwood

LEICESTER — Allen Leonard Atwood, 76, died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Born in Leicester on Dec. 29, 1932, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Blanche (McDonald) Atwood.

He was employed at Vermont Marble Co. in Proctor; Howe Scale Co. in Rutland; White Pigment in Pittsford; and Savage Arms in Massachusetts, prior to starting Atwood Trucking Rubbish Removal. He retired after 13 years of business due to muscular dystrophy.

Relatives say he enjoyed his family and close friends and enjoyed hunting, fishing and his all-time favorite, people watching.

Family members include his wife, Joan Ann (Corey) Atwood, whom he married Feb. 6, 1954; five children, Allen Atwood Jr. and his fiancée Rachel Thow of Sudbury, Randall Atwood and his wife Joyce of Addison, Susan Barrows and her husband Roger of Morrisville, Gary Atwood and his fiancée Kelli Guess of Hydeville, Joallen Vincent and her husband Mike of Cornwall; six sisters, Wilma Croumey of Glens Falls, N.Y., Evelyn Lake of Waltham, Glenna Buzzell of Pittsford, Helen Hale of South Londonderry, Betty Osmer and her husband Ernest of Bridgewater Corners, and Doris Aldrich of Caroleen, S.C.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren ; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Theron and Harley Atwood, and a sister, Pauline Godett.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, May 20, at Forest Dale cemetery, with the Rev. John McDonald, pastor of the Forest Dale Wesleyan Church, officiating.

Leslie W. Fiske

LEICESTER — Leslie W. Fiske, 62, of Leicester and Pittsford, died Monday, May 11, 2009, at Rutland Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Schenectady, N.Y., Feb. 5, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Herbert J. and Mary (Byram) Wright.

She was a graduate of St. Agnes High School in Albany, N.Y., class of 1966, and had been a clerk for six years at Brandon Grand Union prior to her recent illness.

Leslie enjoyed her family and spending time with her grandchildren, camping and music. She was a dedicated pet owner to her dog Bailey and cat Chloe.

Family members include her two sons, Shaun D. Fiske and his girlfriend Julie Sheldrick of Salisbury and Thomas J. Fiske and his fiancée Robin Rheaume of Whiting; her husband, Ronald W. Fiske of Leicester; two brothers, Jack Wright of Pittsfield, Maine, and Charles Wright of Hudson, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Ross W. Fiske and Willow A. Fiske.

She was predeceased by both her parents.

A time of remembrance will be Wednesday, May 20, at her husband’s home, 1887 Old Jerusalem Rd., Leicester, from 2 to 4 p.m. All family and friends are invited to attend.

Shirley Redfield

SALISBURY — Shirley Redfield, 97, of Salisbury died Monday, May 4, 2009.

She was born Sept. 15, 1911, to Charles C. and Beatrice (Stubbs) Walden in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was predeceased by her first husband, James E. Youngs, in 1975 and second husband, John Redfield, in 1984.

Shirley is survived by her daughters Barrie (Youngs) Bailey and her husband “Wally” of Salisbury and Dale (Youngs) Caldwell and her husband Peter of Pine Beach, N.J. Her grandchildren are Kelly (Nelson) Bellinger of Lake Dunmore, Asher Nelson of East Middlebury, Rowan Nelson of Weybridge, Billy Caldwell of Waterbury Center, Gwyon Nelson of New Port Richie, Fla., and Amy (Caldwell) Rille of Virginia Beach, Va. She had five great-grandchildren. Stepsons Charles Redfield and Alden Redfield and their families also survive her.

Shirley was formerly of Tenafly, N.J., where she was active in the Episcopal Church and was involved with numerous, environmental and peace organizations and SANE Nuclear Freeze. She and her second husband John Redfield were active in the creation of the Tenafly Nature Center and frequently traveled to remote places around the world.

An accomplished painter, Shirley was happiest when she was inspired by the muse, paintbrushes in hand and a dab of paint on her nose. Her oils were exhibited in New York City, New Jersey and Vermont. She was a great lover of nature: bird watching, painting landscapes and fly-fishing. Shirley was also an avid reader and loved discussing her thoughts on philosophy, ecology and religion.

Shirley moved to Middlebury in 1997 and lived later with her daughter Barrie in Salisbury. At intervals, she also stayed with Deb and David Choma and Kate Puente in Hampton, N.Y., for respite care.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, May 23, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Shard Villa Patients Fund, c/o Deb Choma, Shard Villa, 1177 Shard Villa Rd., Salisbury VT, 05769.

Helen V. (Reich) Osborne

HUNTINGDON, Penn. — Helen V. (Reich) Osborne, 89, died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Westminster Woods Nursing Home, in Huntingdon, Penn. She was born Feb. 21, 1920, in Dayton, Ohio, a daughter of Earl K. and Louise (Marx) Reich.

She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1938. She was also a graduate of York Hospitals Aide Workers School and served as an aide at Bedford Hospital.

She was the wife of Edmund A. “Ozzie” Osborne, to whom she was married for 70 years. They lived in Middlebury, Vt., off Quarry Road in the 1960s and ’70s, when he was the president of Porter Medical Center.

She was a life member of Porter Hospital Auxiliary in Middlebury and also a member of the Middlebury Garden Club.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Dr. Larry N. Osborne and wife Sandra of Hawaii; two daughters, Patricia E. Gibbs and husband Ron of York, Penn., and Louise J. Goldstein and husband, Dr. Peter Goldstein of Huntingdon, Penn.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Nathaniel Reich of Ohio, and a sister, Barbara Poulson, both of Ohio.

Funeral services will be private at the request of the family.

Paul Neil

BRISTOL, Vt./CLEARWATER, Fla. — Paul Neil, 75, died peacefully at his winter home in Florida after a brief illness on Tuesday, May 5, with his loving children at his side.

His wife Carolyn predeceased him on Sept. 8, 1996. Surviving him are his six children and their families, Kevin and Stephanie Neil of Bristol and daughters Heidi and Aimee; Colleen and Scott Edelstein of Burlington and sons Aaron and Ethan; Brenda Neil and David Lutz of South Burlington and son Benjamin; Lisa and Bob Cole of Sheldon and daughters Rebecca, Jennifer, Brittany and Kelsey; Karen Neil of Charleston, W.V., and sons Trevor, Dillon and Christian; and Andy and Jeannie Neil of Bristol and sons Keegan, Avery and Nicholas. His first great-grandchild Cameron was born March 28, 2009.

He was a charter member of the Bristol Rescue Squad and served for over 10 years. His passions in life included fishing, antiquing and woodworking. He enjoyed his four winters in Florida with many new friends and his one regret is that he did not discover it sooner.

A service remembering his life will be held in the Red Barn at Mary’s at Baldwin Creek on Sunday, June 7, at 1 p.m. His children request that donations in his memory be made to the Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd., Clearwater, FL 33760.

Barbara Evans Handte

RENO, Nev./VERGENNES — A memorial service for Barbara Evans Handte, 77, late of Reno, Nev., and formerly of Vergennes, and who died Feb. 11, 2009, will be held Saturday, May 23, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol at 10 a.m. A reception will follow at the home of Pat and Gerry Wager, on Tri-Town Road in Addison.

Beverly Farnham

MURRELLS INLET, S.C. — Beverly Farnham, 92, died May 12, 2009, in the presence of loved ones at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, S.C.

She was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Walpole, N.H., daughter of the late Francis and Beatrice (Whipple) Miller. She married Lucius Farnham on March 26, 1937.

She was an active member of Belin United Methodist Church of Murrells Inlet until the time of her death. Relatives say she enjoyed volunteering, reading, playing miniature golf and playing cards. She also relished her many trips to visit family and friends.

She is survived by three daughters: Mona Snyder of Bridport, Lucia MacKenzie of Garden City, S.C., and Debbie Oberg of Murrells Inlet; two sons, Stephen Farnham of Gainesville, Ga., and Doug Farnham of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; 17 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband on Oct. 6, 2005; one daughter, Bethany Thompson of Fair Haven; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 15, at Belin United Methodist Church, 4182 Highway 17 Business South, Murrells Inlet, S.C.

Donations may be made to Elderly Services Inc., Project Independence Adult Day Care, 112 Exchange St., Middlebury, VT 05753.

David H. Hotte

FAIRFAX — David H. Hotte, 64, died unexpectedly Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at his home in Fairfax.

Born in Cornwall on Oct. 26, 1944, he was the son of the late Simon J. and Edith (Naylor) Hotte.

He was employed as a project superintendent for Pizzagalli Construction Co. for 36 years. He was a graduate of Middlebury Union High School and a member of St. Albans Elks Lodge No. 1566. David enjoyed watching a variety of sports, cooking, gardening and working in his yard.

David leaves his daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and Bradley Newton of Rutland; two grandsons, David and Colby; three brothers, Stanley Hotte of Vergennes, Fred Hotte of Bristol and Reggie Hotte of Saratoga, N.Y.; a sister, Theresa Wright of Vergennes; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, May 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s cemetery in Middlebury, with Father Robert Whalen officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Vermont Chapter, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, VT 05495, or the American Diabetes Association, Burlington VT-NY Office, 1 Kennedy Drive, Suite L8, South Burlington, VT 05403.

Judith Webb

RIPTON — A funeral service for Judith Webb, 71, who died April 14, 2009, will be held Saturday, May 9, at 11 a.m. at her home, 1132 Lincoln Rd. in Ripton.

Roland M. Vayer

VERGENNES, Vt./FEEDING HILLS, Mass. — Roland M. Vayer, 94, formerly of Vergennes, died Feb. 24, 2006, in a nursing home in Feeding Hills, Mass.

Born in St. Odilon, Canada, he lived in Vergennes most of his retirement years, moving to Feeding Hills in 2001. He worked for over 20 years as an electrical engineer for the Department of the Army, retiring in 1974.

He was instrumental in the mechanization of facilities for the modernization of the U.S. Postal Service, in particular, the bulk mail system. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Capital Radio Engineering Institute, and he twice received the Vermont National Defense Medal.

He is survived by a brother, Charlemange Veilleux of Newport; a sister, Gisele Lamoureux of Feeding Hills, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Inga Vayer, and by a sister, Martha Veilleux.

A memorial Mass will be held at St. Peter’s church in Vergennes at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, 2009. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s cemetery.
