Nathalie Huitric

MONKTON — Nathalie Huitric of Monkton died April 5, 2009, peacefully, in the presence of friends and family.

Her childhood years were spent in Africa, which ignited her interest in traveling the world. Friends say she did not let a lack of material wealth limit her interest in travel or her love for the earth; crushing grapes barefoot, house sitting or caretaking were ways to enjoy this beautiful planet when the desire to get away appeared.

After training at the Wynstones Kindergarten in Gloucester, U.K., she immigrated to Vermont, beginning a new career with young children at the Lake Champlain Waldorf School.

In her early years as a teacher, she never let on that her grasp of the English language was at times marginal. Her young students could become confused whether they were being told, “Messy, messy,” or was this beloved teacher saying, “Merci”?

During her friendship with Mike Patnaude, she was able to acquire her land. Friends say she loved her little woods in Monkton, in her simple cabin by the pond.

She faithfully donated to her favorite charities (Women Helping Battered Women, the Lake Champlain Waldorf School and Sustainable Harvest International) regardless of how much money she had. She gardened, became a nanny, studied massage and healing, offering her talents to others over the years.

Her beloved cats kept her company for many a long winter. Before she became ill with breast cancer, she renewed her love for painting that had been nurtured in her youth.

There will be a celebration of life at Cassandra and Jonathan Corcoran’s home in Monkton on May 23, 5 p.m., rain or shine.
