Mary L. Forrest
RANDOLPH — Mary L. Forrest, 76, of Randolph died Monday morning, Dec. 10, 2007, at Gifford Medical Center. She was born May 26, 1931, in Derby, the daughter of John and Bernadette (Chaloux) Duto.
She was raised in Derby and came to Randolph in 1951. She was married to Francis L. Forrest on March 24, 1973 in Rutland. She worked at VanRaalte in Randolph then Waterbury Plastics. According to family she enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts, bird watching, caring for animals, and being with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Francis L. Forrest of Randolph; three sons, Mike Loomis and his wife Melisa of Royalton, David Forrest and his wife Robin of Shoreham, and Robert Forrest of California; two daughters, Pat Zeno Roberts of Weybridge, and Kathy Tarbell of Brandon; a brother, Bernard Duto of White River Junction; a sister, Irene Piche of Ware, Mass.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her son, Gary Forrest, and her daughter, Cindy Marie Loomis.
Funeral services were held on Thursday morning, Dec. 13, at the Day Funeral Home, with Rev. John Milanese officiating. Burial will be in the spring at the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center.

Clement “Clem” A. Cousino
NEWTON, N.C./BRISTOL — Clement “Clem” A. Cousino, 78, of Newton, N.C., died on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at the Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley after a short battle with cancer. He was born on July 30, 1929, in Bristol, the son of Benjamin Cousino and Melinda Provoncha Cousino.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Newton, served as a sergeant in the United States Army in the Korean War, and retired after thirty-seven years as an engineer in the powdered metal industry. According to family he had a great sense of humor and was a master mechanic who enjoyed gardening and classic cars.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Schott of Hickory; two sons, Michael A. Cousino and his wife Carol of Wallingford, Conn., and John Cousino and his wife Becky of Meriden, Conn.; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Theresa Lahue and her husband Morris of Maine, and Anna Schellhardt and her husband Virgil of Gainesville, Fla.; and two brothers, Glen Cousino and his wife Julie of Meriden, Conn., and John Cousino and his wife Sue of Fairfax.
He was predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Cousino; and two brothers, Ralph Cousino and Melvin Cousino.
A funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Newton with the Reverend Jim Collins celebrating. A committal service will be held at a later date at Mt. St. Joseph’s cemetery in Bristol. Funeral arrangements in Connecticut and Vermont will be announced at a later date.

Sierra Mae Butler
VERGENNES — Sierra Mae Butler, 3 died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury. She was born Dec. 4, 2004, in Burlington, the daughter of David and Olive (Gove) Butler.
Sierra is survived by her parents, David and Olive Butler of Vergennes; three sisters, Amber, Ashley, and Robyn; two brothers, David and Zachary; a grandmother, Roxanne Montgomery; a grandfather, David Gove; an uncle, Bobby Gove; an aunt, Kimberly Nolan; and two cousins.
Funeral services were held on Thursday morning, Dec. 13, at Vergennes Congregational Church. Interment was in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes.

Charles Merton “Charlie” Rowe
CORNWALL — Charles Merton “Charlie” Rowe, 75, died unexpectedly helping on Rowecrest Farm on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007. Born March 7, 1932, in Laconia, N.H., he was the son of the late Merton C. and Grace (Foster) Rowe, and grew up on his family farm in Belmont, N.H.
In 1954, he graduated with a business degree from the University of New Hampshire. He enrolled in ROTC in college and entered the United States Air Force upon graduation, serving during the Korean Conflict.
Charlie married Mary Rose Novak from Lynn, Mass., on May 27, 1956. After working for a number of years in the business world, he and Mary fulfilled their lifelong dream of buying a farm in Cornwall and raising their five children there.
After retiring he continued to help his son on the farm. He was also an advertising representative for the Farm Bureau and took agricultural surveys for the government.
He loved gardening, reading, jazz music, history, genealogy and the Red Sox.
Family members include his loving wife Mary of Cornwall, his five children, Karen Rowe of Cambridge, Mass., Daniel Rowe of Cornwall, David Rowe and his wife Donna of Medway, Mass., James Rowe and his wife Bettie of Nottingham, Pa., and Kathleen Brisson and her husband Randall of Shoreham; and five grandchildren, Brendan and Brittany Rowe, Rose Rowe, Ben and Jack Brisson.
He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Clarice Russell.
Those who knew Charlie knew he loved to talk and meet new people. We will all miss his energetic exuberance and zest for life. He joked his epitaph should read, “so many people, so little time.”
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Thursday morning, Dec. 6, 2007, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Middlebury with Rev. Justin Baker as celebrant.

Joseph David “Joey” Decker
BRANDON — Joseph David “Joey” Decker, 23, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007 at Porter Hospital in Middlebury. He was born in Belleville, N.J., on May 28, 1984, the son of Thomas and Karen (Hardin) Decker.
He moved to Brandon with his family in 1988 coming from Kearney, N.J. He received his education in Neshobe Elementary School and Otter Valley Union High School. While in high school he was active in baseball, basketball and soccer. Following his education he worked in the landscaping business in New Hampshire. He returned to Vermont and worked as a landscaper at Middlebury College until January of this year. He was employed more recently by a local plumbing and heating business.
He is survived by a son, Aiden Joseph Decker of Whiting; his parents, Tom and Karen Decker of Brandon; a brother, Matthew T. Decker of Derry, N.H.; his paternal grandmother, Ruth Decker of Rutherford, N.J.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral service “In Celebration of His Life” was held on Thursday morning, Dec. 6, at The Brandon Congregational Church. The Rev. Richard White, Pastor officiated. Burial will be private.

Karen “Kadi” Ward Gilbert
WAITSFIELD — Karen “Kadi” Ward Gilbert, 52, of Waitsfield died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. She was born in Montpelier on Feb. 7, 1955, the daughter of Holly and Virginia (Larson) Ward.
She attended Moretown Elementary School; Harwood Union Middle School in Duxbury; the Fox Hollow School in Massachusetts; the Westover School in Connecticut and was a 1973 graduate of Institute Montesano in Gstaad, Switzerland. She continued her education at the Katharine Gibbs School in Boston.
She was previously married to Lisle Gilbert. A longtime resident of the Mad River Valley, she was the mother of two daughters and was an accomplished equestrian.
She is survived by her children, Sarah W. Gilbert and Caroline E. Gilbert, both of Waitsfield; her father and step-mother, Holly and Peggy Ward of Middlebury; her mother, Virginia Goodfellow of Warren; her sister, Gail Ward-Gould of Scottsdale Ariz.; two step-sisters, Willow Blish of Boston, Mass., and Amanda Alexander of Sheridan, Wyo.; and a step-niece.
A celebration of her life was held at the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Thursday, Dec. 6. Later inurnment will take place in the Ward family lot in South Duxbury cemetery.

Constance “Connie” Gardner Drew
MIDDLEBURY — Constance “Connie” Gardner Drew, 85, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007, at home. She was a loving mother, grandmother and wife, devoting her life to her family, which was the most important thing to her. She will be sorely missed by all her family and friends.
Connie was born in Bennington on Dec. 20, 1921, the daughter of Frank H. and Azelia (LaFlamme) Rousseau. She married Edward G. Gardner, who predeceased her in 1953. In January of 1958 she married Alson I. Drew (Ted), who predeceased her in 1982.
Connie leaves her loving family, her son, Richard Gardner and wife Madeline of Middlebury; her daughters, Dale Gardner Fox and husband Chris of Belchertown, Mass., Lin Drew Hammond and husband Steve of Middlebury; her sister Mary Lillian Rousseau of Putnam, Conn.; her step-daughters, Jean Drew Wisnowski of Salisbury, and Joan Drew Clark of Salisbury; her step-son-in-law, Edward Daisy of Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Roxanne Gardner of Essex Jct., Craig Gardner and wife Tracy of Randolph Center, Casey and Ian Fox of Belchertown, Mass., Drew and Dylan Peterson of Middlebury, James Wisnowski and wife Missy of Middlebury, Tom Wisnowski and wife Marcy of Salisbury, Holly Wisnowski Hathaway and husband Eric of Middlebury, Pamala Daisy and husband Tom McMahon, Pandora Daisy Mayer, and Penelope Daisy Adams and husband Scott; several great-grandchildren; her nieces, Dolores Rousseau Kneeland of Connecticut, and Jane Gardner of Bennington; and her nephews, Francis Rousseau Jr. of Connectcut, and Mick Gardner of Bennington.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Francis Rousseau and wife Florence; a daughter-in-law, Jane Drew Daisy; sons-in-law, Edmund Wisnowski, Clifford Giroux, and Richard Clark; and a close family friend, James Stephenson.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury with Rev. Justin Baker, pastor, as celebrant, followed by a reception at her home at 121 Munger St. in Middlebury.
There will be no calling hours.

Doris McDonald Corey
FORESTDALE — Doris McDonald Corey, 90, died Nov. 3, 2007, at Sky Ridge Medical Center, in Parker, Colo. She was born in Brandon on March 26, 1917, the daughter of James A. and Caroline (June) McDonald.
She graduated from Brandon High School in 1935 and Castleton Normal School, with her teacher’s certificate, in 1937. She taught in Vermont schools for 42 years, including Windham, Goshen, and from 1939 until retiring in 1982 at Forestdale Elementary School.
On June 17, 1939, she married C.E. “Bill” Corey. He died Aug. 28, 2003. She was a lifelong member of Forestdale Wesleyan Church, where she had served as church treasurer.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Corey Khoury of Escondido, Calif., and Deborah Corey Evans of Larkspur, Colo.; and four grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by three sisters, Helen Fox, Vera Hubbard and Ruth McDonald.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at The Forestdale Wesleyan Church. The Rev. John McDonald, pastor, will officiate. The burial will follow the service in the family lot at Forestdale cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the church hall following the committal service for a time of fellowship and reflection.

Douglas R. Marsden
HAWTHORNE, Fla. — Douglas R. Marsden, age 61, of Hawthorne, and formerly of Middlebury and Bennington, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at the home of Darlene and Gregory Lockwood of Shaftsbury.
Mr. Marsden had traveled to Vermont in early November to spend time at his hunting camp in Peru and with his family and close friends in this area.
Doug was born on Sept. 22, 1946, in Bennington, and was the son of Roy and Katherine Marsden. He received his education at Bennington High School and upon graduation attended Keene State College. Mr. Marsden was employed at Fairdale Farms before accepting a management position with Kraft Foods in 1977. While working with Kraft, Doug served in various capacities in Canton, N.Y., and Claire, Mich. In 1983 Doug was named plant manager at the Kraft cheese processing facility in Middlebury and returned to his home state of Vermont.
In 1991, Mr. Marsden began employment with the Vermont State Department of Agriculture as a dairy product specialist. Doug retired from this position in 2005 due to declining health. Mr. Marsden and his wife also owned and operated Marsden Country Store in Middlebury for many years. Mr. Marsden was also active in the Middlebury community and was chairman of the annual United Way Fund Drive for several years.
Doug enlisted in the Vermont National Guard in 1966 and served in the Guard for over 39 years. He was a long-standing member of the Guard rifle team and competed in state, national and international matches. Many of his fondest memories were of long days spent on the firing line at Ethan Allen Range in Jericho. Doug retired from the guard in September 2006 as a SFC-E7.
Many life-long friendships were formed during Doug’s military service and he remained close to numerous members of the unit until his death.
Mr. Marsden was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being in the forest and close to nature. Doug was a member and owner in the Winhall Outing Club and never missed a deer season at camp in over 50 years.
In addition to his wife, Arlene, he is survived by his son, Robert and wife Julia of Castleton; his son Bradley and his partner Tina Hutchins of Middlebury; his mother, Katherine Marsden and his brother, James, both of Bennington; and his sister Mary Veitch and her husband Tom of Sunderland. In addition, Doug is survived by three grandchildren: Tajah, Blayke and Rielly.
Memorial services are planned for Dec. 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the Ethan Allen Firing Range Chapel in Jericho.

John Samuel “Sam” Hewlett
PORT SALERNO, Fla. — John Samuel “Sam” Hewlett, 71, of Stuart, Fla., died Nov. 16, 2007, at Martin Memorial Hospital South in Port Salerno, Fla. He was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
He resided in Stuart for two years, moving from Middlebury, Vt.
Before retirement, he was a genetic engineer in the dairy farming industry for 36 years. He attended First Baptist Church of Stuart.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Laura Hewlett of Stuart; a daughter, Kimberly Hewlett of Bonita Springs, Fla.; two sons, Kevin Hewlett of Framingham, Mas., and Mark Hewlett of Stuart; four brothers, Howard Hewlett of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., Robert Hewlett of Otega, N.Y., Donald Hewlett of Dover Plains, N.Y., and Allan Hewlett of New York; five sisters, Jean Wheeler of Rifton, N.Y., Betty Underhill of Poughkeepsie, Ella Hampson of Connecticut, Eleanor Benson of Dover Plains and Barbara Bontempo of Pueblo, Colo.; and four grandchildren.
