Marjorie Hickey
WEYBRIDGE — Marjorie Hickey, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, at her home, surrounded by family.
She was born April 24, 1931, in Suplee, Penn., the daughter of the late C. Lloyd and E. Viola (Millard) Emery. Formerly of Downingtown, Penn., she relocated to Vermont in early 2004 to be closer to her family.
She graduated from Downingtown High School in 1949. She then attended classes at Franklin & Marshall College before she went on to become the Assistant Director of Personnel at the VA Medical Center in Coatesville, Penn.
She was married to the late Lester G. Daily of Parkesburg, Penn., in 1951. They had one child, James L. Daily, before divorcing in 1973. She was later remarried to Thomas Hickey of Downingtown, Penn. They divorced after 23 years of marriage.
After 30 years at the VA hospital she retired and later owned and operated On-The-Go Travel in Exton, Penn., for ten years. According to her family, traveling was always a great passion of hers and throughout her life she journeyed to countries all around the world. She also had great love for cats, especially Booty.
She is survived by her son, James, and his wife, Pamela (Griffith) Daily of Weybridge; a sister, Fay E. King and husband Ray of Honey Brook, Penn.; twin granddaughters; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.
She was predeceased by her eldest sister, June Moyer.
Private services will be held in spring of 2009.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Addison County Humane Society of Middlebury or the organization of one’s choice.
Simon Arthur Brousseau
MIDDLEBURY — Simon Arthur Brousseau, 85, a longtime resident of Montpelier, died Dec. 20, 2008, in Middlebury from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.
He was born on Sept. 13, 1923, in Norton, the son of Helen (Laverture) and Adelord Brousseau. He spoke French until he began school.
At 18, he joined the Army and served during Word War II in France, Belgium and Germany as a cook and entertainment organizer. He was in the Battle of the Bulge and served in Normandy after the initial invasion.
After the war, he worked as a cook in Massachusetts and Florida, where he met his first wife, Anne Lucas. They had two children, Arlene and Edward, who both predeceased him.
He worked as a chef at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City for 20 years.
Following his divorce, he returned to Central Vermont, where he ran a landfill in East Montpelier.
In 1973, he married Ann Hoxie Greiner of Montpelier. He later worked for National Life Insurance and operated a plowing and lawn mowing service. They remained in Montpelier until retirement, upon which they moved to South Burlington and then Middlebury in 2006. He enjoyed sailing, cooking and walking on the beaches of Myrtle Beach and Maine.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Sally Bilodeau of Barre and family; a brother, Fred Brousseau of Montpelier and family; a grandson and great-granddaughter; and three stepdaughters and their families, Michael Ann Greiner of Jericho, Lee Greiner of Belgrade, Maine, and Mary Conlon of Cornwall.
In addition to his children, he was predeceased by a granddaughter, Heather Benedini Light, and a sister, Florence Aja.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury.

Paul Albert Larrow Sr.
BRISTOL — Paul Albert Larrow Sr., 84, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008, at Birchwood Terrace Nursing Home in Burlington.
He was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Vergennes, the son of Howard and Inza (Roberts) Larrow.
He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Bristol. He farmed in New Haven for 64 years.
He is survived by two children, Nancy Godard and husband Paul Marcel of South Burlington and Paul A. Larrow Jr. and wife Ruth of Williston; a brother, Julius H. Larrow and wife Midge of Middlebury; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Lenore, on Jan. 4, 2001.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, at St. Ambrose Church in Bristol. Interment will be in Mount St. Joseph cemetery in Bristol. There will be no public calling hours.

Doris (Pierce) Conway
MONKTON — Doris (Pierce) Conway died Dec. 16, 2008, at Helen Porter Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury.
Born at home on July 29, 1919, in Starksboro, she was the daughter of the late Marble and Annetta Pierce. She lived in Starksboro until she met and married the love of her life, Charles E. Conway. They were married for 54 years until his death in 1997.
She was an active member of the Friend’s Church in Monkton for many years. She was involved with the Sunday school, vacation Bible school and many other aspects of the church. During the late 1980s she and her husband began attending Trinity Baptist Church in Williston. She worshiped there until the onset of her illness.
She is survived by her son, Charles J. Conway and his wife Sally (Lowd) of Addison; two grandchildren; a niece; and many other relatives.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; a sister, Marjory (Pierce) Rader; and a brother, Russell Pierce.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22, at Trinity Baptist Church in Williston. Interment will be in Maplewood cemetery in Huntington in the spring. Friends may call at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol on Sunday, Dec. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Jean Arlie (Whittemore) Whitman
MIDDLEBURY — Jean Arlie (Whittemore) Whitman died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at Porter Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.
Born and raised in Ripton, she was the daughter of Harold and Bernice (Billings) Whittemore. She and her two sisters grew up exploring the hills and valleys of Ripton and Middlebury College’s Bread Loaf Campus. She attended Ripton’s two-room schoolhouse until transferring to Middlebury in seventh grade. In high school, she pitched for the softball team.
After graduation, she married her husband, Raymond, and moved to Middlebury. Together they raised four children. She was active in the Valley Bible Church of East Middlebury. Her family says she loved flower gardening and was famous for her baked beans. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and rug hooking, as well as doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her four children, Lynn, Gary, Robin and Scott; and a sister, Patricia Hunter, of Lexington, Mass.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, and a sister, Lorraine Malzac.
A service in her memory will be held on Friday, Dec. 19, at 1 p.m., at the Valley Bible Church in East Middlebury. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be made to the Middlebury Volunteer Ambulance Association or the Valley Bible Church.
Dorothy H. Weber
MIDDLEBURY — Dorothy H. Weber, 95, of Middlebury died peacefully Dec. 11, 2008, at the Helen Porter Health Care and Rehabilitation Memory Unit with her son and daughter-in-law at her bedside. She was born on Aug. 8, 1913, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Martha and Simon Erikson. Her parents were both born in Finland, and she was a loyal Finn, but America held her heart.
In 1936 she came to Vermont with her new husband, Wilbur, and their dog Baron. She loved Vermont with all its seasons, even winter.
Family said that “Nana,” as she was known, passionately loved her family and was especially proud to have grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to whom she was a sparkling example of Christianity in action. She had a strong faith in God and trust in people. As recently as this past Thanksgiving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered to Middlebury to get a dose of Nana’s love.
She was a beloved third-grade teacher for many years at Dorset Elementary School, where she started each day by gathering the children around or on her desk because she had concluded that it started each day off on a happy note.
She lived her last seven years in Middlebury with her son, Kenneth, and daughter-in-law, Joanne, including a brief stay at the Helen Porter Memory Unit.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth and his wife, Joanne, of Middlebury.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur; her brother Glenn Erikson; and two daughters, Karen and Claire.

Robert Stanley Rule
VERGENNES — Robert Stanley Rule, 78, of Vergennes, died Monday Dec. 15, 2008, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
He was born May 18, 1930, in Shoreham, the son of William and Daisy (Hayes) Rule. He served in the U.S. Army. He worked at BFGoodrich/Simmonds Precision for 29 years, retiring in 1993.
Family says he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, archery and playing his guitar. He especially enjoyed traveling with his wife Clara in their motor home for 13 years.
Robert is survived by his wife, Clara Mae Rule of Vergennes; two sons, Jerry Rule and wife Joyce of Panton, and John Rule of Proctor; five daughters, Sharon Whitney and husband George of Proctor, Sandy Jago and husband Charles of Addison, Terry Rublee and husband Bruce of South Starksboro, Stacy Bigelow and husband Blakley of Starksboro, and Penny Newton and husband Scott of Essex Junction; 23 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be in the spring.
Anthony Dean Ringer
VERGENNES — Anthony Dean Ringer, 53, died of cancer on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, with his family by his side. He was born on March 18, 1955, in Burlington.
He attended Vergennes Union High School and Vermont Technical College. For the last 35 years, when he wasn’t fishing, he was a printed circuit board designer at Goodrich in Vergennes. According to his friends and family, Tony will be remembered as a fun loving, practical joker, who was always willing to lend a hand and tell you what he really thought.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Wendy Cushman Ringer; daughter Ashley Bungard and husband Damon of Burlington; son Jacob Ringer and friend Kristen Bissonette; three brothers, Frederick Ringer and Mike Ringer of Essex; and Patrick Ringer and his wife Patricia of Kendall Park, N.J.; two sisters, Mary Essex and husband David of Ferrisburgh; and Luanne Mailloux and husband Paul of Vergennes; mother-in-law Evelyn Cushman; five sisters-in-law, Pat Ganson of Vergennes; Carolyn Allen and husband John of Charlotte; Margaret Schelley and husband Gary of Montpelier; Elaine Carrol and husband Mathew of Mass.; and Frances Simpson and husband Charles of Waltham; three brothers-in-law, Lynn Cushman and wife Julie of Washington; Fred Cushman of New Haven; and Ken Cushman and wife Shayne of New Haven; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Lucille (Patrie) Ringer and Frederick Charles Ringer; father-in-law Kenneth Cushman; and brother-in-law Wayne Ganson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes. Interment will be in Prospect cemetery in Vergennes. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home. Alice Quesnel
MIDDLEBURY — Alice Quesnel, 89, of Middlebury, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, in Vergennes, following a period of failing health.
Born May 8, 1919, in Crysler, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of Ferdinand and Alpheda (Levesque) Benoit.
Alice was a resident of Middlebury since 1944, moving here from Shoreham. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church of Middlebury.
She is survived by two sons, Bernard Quesnel and wife Sandra of Middlebury and Louis Quesnel of Middlebury; two brothers, Donat Benoit of Orleans, Ontario, Canada and Roch Benoit of Montreal, Canada; four sisters, Therese Lacroix of Ottawa, Canada, Rita Corville of Embrum, Ontario, Bernadette Dagenais of South Barre and Lucienne Patneaude of Embrum, Ontario; three grandchildren, Deborah Spencer of North Reading, Mass., Susan Quesnel of Castleton and Andrew Quesnel of Medford, Mass.; two great-grandchildren, Madison and Travis Spencer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Euclide Quesnel, who died Nov. 5, 1988.
There will be no public calling hours.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 20, at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. William Beaudin, pastor, as celebrant. A spring burial will take place in St. Mary’s cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to St. Mary’s School, c/o St. Mary’s Church, 326 College St., Middlebury, VT 05753, or to the charity of one’s choice.
Helen Ross Patterson
SHELBURNE — Helen Ross Patterson, 86, of Shelburne and Middlebury, previously of Wellesley and Brookline, Mass., died Nov. 28, 2008.
Born in Middlebury to Hannah Holmes and Jacob Ross, she lost both parents by age 13. She graduated from Northfield School 1939 and received a B.S. in chemistry from Radcliffe College in 1944. She met her husband, W. Bradford Patterson, at college. She completed her master’s in chemistry at Middlebury College.
After moving with her husband to the Boston area, she worked as research assistant while he attended medical school. She worked as a full-time community volunteer while raising four children.
She had a strong mind and dedicated her life to fighting discrimination against minorities and children. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters and the Commission on Church and Race. She ran for state senate in 1968 but lost in a close race.
She lived in Rochester, N.Y., from 1970 to 1978, where she continued to work in child welfare. She returned to Boston when her husband joined the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
Retiring to Middlebury in 1990, she volunteered for the Addison County Community Action Group and discovered a gift for writing poetry. In 2000, she moved to Wake Robin in Shelburne.
She hiked many miles on the Appalachian Trail and her family says she enjoyed canoeing, tennis, knitting, reading and baking wonderful pies. They say she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and was happiest during summers at Long Point on Lake Champlain.
She is survived by her husband, W. Bradford Patterson, of Shelburne; two daughters, Rebecca Bruns and husband Gordon of Holland, Mich., and Linda Patterson of Williamstown, Mass.; son Stuart Patterson and wife Lisa, of Hingham, Mass.; daughter-in-law Janet Stafford of Shrewsbury, Mass.; many grandchildren; and a large extended family.
She was predeceased by her eldest son, William B. Patterson Jr. of Shrewsbury, who died March 31, 2008.
A memorial service will be held at Wake Robin in Shelburne on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 3 p.m. Expressions of sympathy in her memory may be made to the Appalachian Mountain Club or Southern Poverty Law Center.
