Amanda Fay LaRock

ORWELL — Amanda Fay LaRock, 95, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at Helen Porter Health and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury. She was born in Stratford, Conn., on Dec. 6, 1910, the daughter of Joseph and Oiga (Janshon) LaRock.

In her earlier years she worked as a sales clerk in a confectionary shop. She had lived in Orwell since 1973, when she moved from Chester, N.J. From 1969 until her retirement she worked in the wood and furniture finishing business. While in Orwell she worked for Stratford House Furniture with her sister and brother-in-law, where she also did the bookkeeping.

She enjoyed music and gardening and was an avid bird watcher.

She is survived by her sister, Vida Seck of Orwell, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral service was held on Saturday morning, Jan. 14, at the Mallory Funeral Home in Fair Haven, with Nicholas Thornblade officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Hollywood cemetery in Union, N.J.

Donald Charles Brown

RUTLAND — Donald Charles Brown, 78, of Little River, S.C., and Rutland, Vt., died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, following a lengthy battle with a respiratory illness.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Beverly Dolphin Brown, and her children, Stephen Dolphin of Mendon, Vt., James Dolphin of Rutland, Vt., and Julie Pecor of Holmes Beach, Fla.

CORNWALL — Joyce N. Brooks, 73, of Cornwall died in Fletcher Allen Health Center on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006. Born on July 23, 1932, in Lyndonville, Vt., she was the eldest child of Rudolph and Genevieve Drouin.

Joyce spent her early years there and moved to Meredith, N.H., when she was nine. She graduated with honors from Meredith High School in 1950. In the fall of 1950, she enrolled in the Central Park School of Art in New York City, graduating with a degree in fashion illustration in 1952. In 1971 she married Robert W. Brooks of Laconia, N.H., and they moved to Cornwall, Vt., where they lived for the last 35 years.

Throughout her life, Joyce was keenly interested in much, her flowers, her antiques and collectibles, her endless search for the perfect yard sale. She loved animals and cared deeply for her family and friends. Her kindness, compassion and generosity will be remembered always by those lucky enough to have known her.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Bretton Weeks of Middlebury; her daughter and son-in-law, Roberto and Niia Beteta of Los Angeles, Calif.; two grandchildren, Weston and Logan Beteta; three brothers; three sisters; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by three stepchildren, Ronda Groleau and her husband, Robert, Roberta Boucher and Robin Brooks, and their children and grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for May at the convenience of the family. For those wishing to make a contribution to Joyce’s memory may do so to either the Elderly Services of Middlebury, Addison County Humane Society or the Congregational Church of Cornwall.

Miriam Alice Parker

BRANDON — Miriam Alice Parker, 88, a lifelong Brandon resident, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at Porter Health and Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury. She was born in Brandon on June 8, 1917, the daughter of Fred and Nellie (Davis) Hallett.

She graduated from Brandon High School in 1935. On Aug. 23, 1938, she married Marvin Parker at Lake Dunmore. In her earlier years she worked in Brandon as a telephone operator for over 20 years. When the phone system went to a dial tone she retired. She enjoyed cooking and her flower garden.

She is survived two daughters, Sally Ann Pagano and her husband, Gene, of Brandon, and Debra Kesek of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sons, Marvin Richard Parker and his companion, Lucinda, of Leicester, and John R. Parker and his wife, Terry, of Leicester; two brothers, Russell Hallett of Brandon and Barney Hallett of Forestdale; one sister, Dorothy Wetmore of Brandon; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband on Aug. 17, 1976.

There will be no public calling hours. A private funeral service and burial will take place in the spring at the family lot in Pine Hill cemetery. The Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, will officiate.

James Montgomery Jaques

RUTLAND — James Montgomery Jaques, 53, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Rutland Regional Medical Center. He was predeceased by his wife, Marysia Annabelle Jaques, a former Brandon resident, just eight hours before him. James Jaques suffered a heart attack while visiting a pharmacy and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Sept. 7, 1952, the son of Donald and Mary (Rose) Jaques Sr.

He is survived by two sons, James Jaques of Detroit and Donald Jaques of Connecticut, and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

At his request there will be no funeral service.

Marysia Annabelle Jaques

RUTLAND — Marysia Annabelle Jaques, 76, died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at her home in Rutland after an illness.

Jaques, a former Brandon resident, was born in Castleton on Sept. 21, 1929, the daughter of Norman and Dora (Willette) Rivers.

Her husband, James Montgomery Jacques, died of a heart attack eight hours after his wife.

Marysia Jaques is survived by stepson Robin Bombard of Rutland; daughter Patricia Ryan of Wichita Falls, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by daughter Dora Marie Bombard, sister Norma Scarborough and brother Earl Rivers.

At her request her body has been donated to the Medical College of Vermont. There will be no funeral service.

Joan Susan McPadden

SPRINGFIELD — Joan Susan McPadden, 85, a former Brandon resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Springfield Hospital. She was born in South Boston, Mass., on March 10, 1920, the daughter of John and Petroneli (Pocius) Gelzinis.

She worked many years as a switchboard operator at Brandon Training School. She was a former member of Court Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Daughters of America in Brandon. On May 16, 1943, she married Francis A. McPadden.

She is survived by three sons, Dennis McPadden of Chester, James McPadden of Wilmington, N.C., and Thomas McPadden of Long Island, N.Y.; three daughters, Patricia Rye of Ventura, Calif., Mary McPadden of Phoenix, Ariz., and Eileen Genett of Baldwinsville, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband on Feb. 28, 1972.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Feb. 4, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Springfield. A nephew, the Rev. Kevin Daly of Siena College in Loudenville, N.Y., was the celebrant. A private burial followed in the family lot at St. Mary’s cemetery in Brandon.

AGNES B. MULVEY

OXFORD, N.Y. — Agnes B. Mulvey, 92, of Oxford, N.Y., died unexpectedly in Middlebury on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006. She was born Bridget Agnes Hannon in Cedarhurst, N.Y.

She took a special interest in her Irish heritage.

She is survived by her sister, Mary Fleming of Toms River, N.J.; two daughters, Kathleen Reilley and her husband, Jerry, of Bristol, Vt., and Marian Godfrey and her husband, John, of Oxford; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Mulvey.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by the Rev. Douglas Cunningham on Monday morning, Feb. 6, at St. Joseph’s Church in Oxford. Burial will be at the Church of the Nativity in Linlithgo, N.Y., at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Society, St. Joseph’s Church, Scott Street, Oxford, N.Y., or to the charity of one’s choice.

RACHEL LAHAR BRAINERD

VERGENNES — Rachel Lahar Brainerd, 69, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at her home in Vergennes. She was born in Newport on Dec. 17, 1936, the daughter of Austin and Fubiola (Robert) Lahar.

She was employed at Prouty and Miller Building Supply in Newport until 1983, and then moved to Vergennes and worked at Vergennes Building Supply until her retirement in 2000. She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes, and the Newport American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 21.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Howard Brainerd of Vergennes; three daughters, Diana Guillette and fiancé, Scott Hamilton, of Coventry, Lynda Jones and her husband, Brian, of Derby, and Lee Karzmarczyk and her husband, John, of Vergennes; seven grandchildren; a brother, Richard “Skip” Bernier and his wife, Helen, of Newport; a sister, Cecile Coburn of Newport; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a brother, Gene Lahar, and a sister, Lil Hauver.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Peter’s Catholic Church on Friday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no calling hours.

Frances R. Bullock

BRISTOL — Frances R. Bullock, 98, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at the home of her caregivers, Linda and Kirk Roscoe, in Bristol.

She enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting and traveling. She was a member of R.S.V.P.

She is survived by her two daughters, Ruth Gipson and her husband, Ed, of Middlebury, and Carol L. Comes of Bristol; her stepdaughter, Kathleen Johnson of East Middlebury; her stepsons, James Bullock and his wife, Helen, of Schenectady, N.Y., Richard Bullock of Salisbury, and Thomas Bullock and his wife, Nancy, of Fond du Lac, Wis.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her first husband, George M. VanBuren; her second husband, Frank E. Bullock; a sister, Margaret “Peg” Williams; two brothers, Lewis and John Rufiange; four stepsons; and four stepdaughters.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m. at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol. The Rev. Pierre LaVallee, parish priest, will officiate.

Sally Mudgett Lanphear

DURHAM, N.C. — Sally Mudgett Lanphear, 67, died Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. She was born Nov. 16, 1938, in Morrisville, the daughter of Oscar H. and Dorothy Alice (Waite) Mudgett.

She was a 1956 graduate of Peoples Academy and received a bachelor’s degree from Boston University’s Sargent College of Physical Education in 1960.

Sally is a former resident of Middlebury. She was employed at the Porter Medical Center. She and her husband, Dale R. Lanphear, retired to North Carolina seven years ago.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Bradley Lanphear and his wife, Linda; a daughter, Holly Graham and her husband, Jason; three grandchildren; a brother, David Mudgett and his wife, Cindy; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Morrisville. A reception will follow immediately at the VFW, 28 Pleasant St. in Morrisville. Burial will be in the spring in Pleasant View cemetery.

Martha (Barrett) Wilson

SANBORNTON, N.H. — Martha (Barrett) Wilson, 83, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia, N.H. She was born in Concord, Vt., on June 3, 1922, the daughter of Harry E. and Edith (James) Barrett.

She and her family moved to Bristol, Vt., in 1932, where she lived until 1943 when she married Warren H. Wilson and then moved to Sanbornton.

She finished her elementary education in the Peaked Hill one-room school and graduated from Bristol High School. Shortly after graduation, she went to work at the Bristol Enterprise as a bookkeeper and proofreader until her marriage.

In 1956 she went to work as the town of Sanbornton’s first secretary and bookkeeper to the selectmen — a position she held until 1969.

From 1957 to 1967 she worked at the Sanbornton Central School. In 1967 she went to work at the Tilton Tannery as the payroll clerk, where she worked until the mill closed in 1973. She then went to work for Wilcom Products in Laconia, where she worked as the payroll clerk until she retired in 1984.

She was a 70-year member of the Subordinate Grange and Pomona Grange. She was one of the four oldest members of the Harmony Grange No. 99 in Sanbornton, where she held several offices over the years. She was also a member of the state and national Granges.

She was a member of the Sanbornton Congregational Church, where she served as treasurer and deacon, and on several committees. She was treasurer of the Sanbornton Historical Society and a charter member of the Sanbornton Fire Department Auxiliary.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Beth Caron and her husband, James, of Framingham, Mass., and Beverly Wilson Rutter and her husband, Jonathan, of Bridport, Vt.; three grandsons; a granddaughter; a great-granddaughter; two great-grandsons; a brother, James F. Barrett and his wife, Dorothy, of Greene, N.Y.; a brother-in-law, E. Chester Wilson and his wife, Amy, of Nashua, N.H.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1998, and a sister, Elizabeth “Beth” Mattlin.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Sanbornton Congregational Church, with burial following in Centre cemetery in Sanbornton.
