Donna Abernathy
BRISTOL - Donna Abernathy, 90, died Saturday, March 4, 2000, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.
She was born on Sept. 22, 1909, in Hinesburg, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Scott) Pierce.
She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Bristol.
Her husband, Clarence Abernathy, predeceased her on March 12, 1997.
She is survived by a sister, Delna Burpee of Addison; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in Bristol. Interment was in Greenwood cemetery in Bristol.

Sylvia Norton
BRISTOL - Sylvia Lettie Norton, 88, died Thursday, March 3, 2000, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
She was born Dec. 2, 1911, in South Bristol, the eldest daughter of Ralph and Era (Sumner) O'Bryan.
She was a graduate of the Bristol High School, class of 1930. April 24, 1937, she married David Bostwick Norton, who predeceased her Jan. 9, 1969.
She lived in Bristol her entire life, raising her family while working at different times for Van Raalte in Bristol, Porter Hospital in Middlebury, Strong Hardware in Burlington and, in her later years at the Park Filling Station in Bristol.
Family members said she was a solid citizen, recognizing her responsibilities to her community, state and country. She respected the rights of others while cherishing her own rights and independence. Through her actions, she instilled those values on those around her.
Family was special to her, and she was special to her family.
She is survived by her sons, James Norton and his wife, Beverly, of Danbury, Conn., and Hubert Norton and his wife, Sharon, of Essex; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and their grandmother, Mary Bradley of New Milford, Conn.; her sister, Lula Chamberlain; and her brother, Vern O'Bryan. She also leaves an aunt, Lottie Follansbee, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other friends, including Michael and Deborah Orvis and their family, with whom she had lived for the last couple of years.
She was predeceased by five siblings, Cullen O'Bryan, Alberta Brown, Dora Forbes, Dorthy Spooner, Lila Chamberlain, and a grandson, James O'Bryan Norton Jr.
A memorial service was held on Sunday in Bristol. Interment will be in Briggs Hill cemetery in Bristol at a later date.

Vivian Griffin
SUDBURY - Vivian Ruth Griffin, 83, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Brandon on March 6, 1917. She was the daughter of Clarence and Edith (Munger) Dodge. She received her early education in local Brandon schools and had attended Brandon High School.
On June 10, 1935, she married Benoni S. Griffin Sr. in Fort Ann, N.Y. She had lived all her life in the Brandon/Sudbury area.
She had worked as an aide at the Brandon Training School for more than 23 years. She retired in 1979. She continued working in the Foster Grandparent Program at Neshobe Elementary School for the next 18 years before being forced to retire in 1997 due to illness. She was a member of the Brandon Senior Citizens. She was the oldest member of the Brandon Baptist Church, having attended for the past 73 years.
Surviving are three sons, Benoni S. Griffin and Thomas J. Griffin, both of Sudbury, and Allyn A. Griffin of Brandon; one daughter, Louise Bedrosian of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by her aunt Marion. She was predeceased by a brother, Stewart Dodge.
The funeral service will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Brandon Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Dove will officiate. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the church hall for a time of fellowship and reflection.
A private burial will follow in Willow Brook cemetery in Sudbury.
Friends may call at the Miller and Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Carol Kirchhoff
MIDDLEBURY - Carol Kirchhoff, 91, formerly of Middlebury, died on Feb. 16, 2000, at her home in Inglis, Florida.
She was born in Hamburg, Germany, on Oct. 7, 1908, and moved to Long Island, N.Y., in 1927. It was there that she met her husband of 69 years, Alfred Kirchhoff.
While living in New York, she was not only a devoted mother, but also volunteered as a nurse's aide, was very active in the local church and women's club. She enjoyed being with and helping people.
During the time they lived in New York, the Kirchhoffs began the transition of moving to Vermont by buying a house on Case Street in Middlebury in 1938 and visiting when they could.
In 1960, they moved to Kingston, Jamaica, where Mr. Kirchhoff had accepted a job. Her involvement in the community continued as she became president of the local women's club, volunteered for the Red Cross and helped those less fortunate than she.
They returned to the United States in 1972 and settled in Middlebury. She became an active member of the community and began the recycling program in Middlebury, which also included other surrounding communities. She also recruited volunteers for the program. Those recycling efforts benefited the towns of Middlebury, Bristol, Ripton and Cornwall, which were the recipients of benches and shrubs for the town greens that were bought with recycling monies.
She was also a member of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, the Methodist Church and the women's club.
She frequently wrote letters to the editor, was also involved in writing and playing music and creating special pieces of artwork.
She is survived by her husband, Alfred; two sons, Robert and George; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was taken out to rest in the Gulf waters of Florida where a service was held on the stern of Capt. Alfred Kirchhoff's boat. The service was held on the morning of Feb. 24, and was attended by a minister, friends and family members.
Barbara Story
HANCOCK - Barbara Bernadette Story, 78, died Friday, March 3, 2000, in Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
She was born on the family farm in Waitsfield on Jan. 19, 1922, the daughter of William and Carolyn (Bover) Graves.
She was a 1939 graduate of Waitsfield High School and a 1942 graduate of Johnson Normal School in Johnson. She returned to Johnson State College to earn her degree in human services in 1981 at the age of 59.
She married Lee E. Story on Dec. 24, 1942, in Hancock. Mr. Story died in 1985.
She taught elementary education in Hancock, Waitsfield and Granville in the early 1940s. The Storys moved to Connecticut, where she worked as an engineering aide for 17 years at Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford, Conn. They returned to Hancock in 1968. They designed and had built The Hancock House Motel on Route 125, which they owned and operated for 17 years.
She was very active in civic affairs, serving as an election official, lister, and library trustee, and she was on the budget committee for many years in Hancock. She had also served on the Bicentennial Committees for America in 1976, 1981 for Hancock and 1991 for Vermont.
She was a writer and poet. She was also an organ donor, having donated her eyes for research.
Her memberships included this Rochester Federated Church, and she was a charter member and first president of the Howard Perry Post No. 765, VFW Auxiliary. She helped establish the Quin-Town Senior Citizens Center and named it. She served on the board of directors for the Epilepsy Foundation of Vermont and was named their Person of the Year in 1981.
She was a former member of the South Congregational Church in East Hartford, Conn.
She was also a former town correspondent for the Addison Independent.
Survivors include her daughter, Dr. Carol Story of Morrisville; three brothers, W. Bover Graves of Waitsfield, Bradlee Graves of South Easton, Mass., and Ronald Graves of Fayston; a sister, Beverly Mobus of Warren; many nieces and nephews; and her adopted family, the Keith Jesse family of Hancock.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in the Rochester Federated Church. Burial will be in the Hancock Village cemetery at a later date.

Thomas Beauregard
BRAND0N - Thomas Edmond Beauregard, 81, died Wednesday evening, March 1, 2000, at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington.
He was born in Brandon on July 8, 1918. He was the son of Joseph H. and Lucy (Forsha) Beauregard. He received his early education in Brandon schools.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the Western Pacific Theater of Operations. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Brandon.
He was the owner and operator of Tom's Barber Shop in Brandon for more than 50 years.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brandon. He also belonged to the Brandon American Legion Post 55 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7231. He was a member of Neshobe Country Club and the Vermont State Golf Association. He was a past grand marshal of the Brandon Memorial Day parade.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas A. Beauregard of Morrisville and David Beauregard of Colchester; one sister, Ellen Baker of Proctor; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Jessie (Wescott) Beauregard, in November 1982 and his second wife, Nita (Jackson) Beauregard, in May 1988. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Beauregard in 1953 and Theodore "Red" Beauregard in 1986.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brandon. A private graveside committal service and burial followed in the family lot at St. Mary's cemetery in Brandon.

Dora Larocque
MIDDLEBURY-Dora Eva Larocque, 95, died at Helen Porter Nursing Home on Feb. 29, 2000, surrounded by her family.
She was born June 21, 1904, in St. Isadore De-Prescott, Ontario, Canada, daughter of Osias and Odile Desforges. She married Hyacinthe Larocque on Jan. 27, 1925 and shortly thereafter moved to the Salisbury area.
She worked at Middlebury Union High School (in food service), Middlebury College and Ilsley Library. As an avid gardener, she won the Garden Club Award many times. Everyone enjoyed the colorful array of flowers at her home on Elm Street. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and couldn't wait to challenge someone to a game of cards and Aggravation.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Rhea and Chester Bodette of South Burlington, Claire Lowell of Essex Junction, Rita and Everett Delphia of Bridport, John and Linda Larocque Middlebury and Louise and Richard Warner of East Middlebury; 23 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by four sisters, Simone, Yvette, Lillian and Jeanne.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hyacinthe, son Rene, daughters Pauline Berthiaume and Lela Oliver, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Middlebury. Interment will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family.

Frances Ryan
VERGENNES - Frances W. (Patnode) Ryan, 80, died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
She was born on Nov. 18, 1919, in Bristol, the daughter of VanNess and Carrie (Fowler) Patnode.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes. She and her husband, David, owned and operated Ryan Department Store. She was employed at Simmonds Precision Products for many years. After retirement, she was a guide at Shelburne Museum. Her husband predeceased her in 1968.
She is survived by four children, Sharon and her husband, F. Richard
Nichols, of New Fairfield, Conn., Daryl Hatch of Panton, Michael Ryan and his wife, Patty, of Wolcott, and Lesley Ryan and her husband, Robert Giroux, of Jeffersonville; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes. Interment will be in St. Peter's cemetery in Vergennes.
