R. Curtis Lamberton
1914 - 2003
BETHEL — R. Curtis Lamberton, 88, of Bethel, died June 5, 2003 at Brookside Nursing Home, White River Junction, of advanced renal cancer.
He was born oct. 31, 1914 in Cabot, VT, the son of Raymond W. and Victoria (Nardini) Lamberton.
He attended Cabot schools and worked on the family farm/sawmill, and for the Civilian Conservation Corps building the highway through Groton State Forest.
He attended Lyndon Normal School where he met and married (Kathryn (Kay) Munn in 1939, who died in 1990.
He had taught school in East Montpelier, then taught biology and shop at Bradford Academy from 1944-56, also serving as assistant principal. While there, he was a Boy Scout leader, little league coach and member of the Masonic Lodge.
He attended UVM and received his MA in psychology from St. Michael's College. He was a gear shaper in Springfield until moving to Bethel in 1956, where he became principal of Whitcomb High School and taught sociology, psychology and was a guidance counselor. He operated an antique shop in Bethel and retired as head of the guidance department for Hartford School District.
He returned to Bradford in 1988 and married Dorothy "Dot" Hatch Johnson in 1991, returning to Bethel in 2002. She died in October, 2002.
He had summered in Yankeetown, FL where he was active in the Presbyterian Church and community events. He was a member of the Bethel Rotary, United Church of Christ, Bradford Senior Center, the Orange County Retired Teachers Association and was a Bethel lister.
He enjoyed fly fishing, carpentry, woodworking and furniture refinishing.
Survivors include his sons, R. Scott Lamberton of Bethel; a daughter, Carol Hodgdon of Bethel; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and seven step great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother, John and Phil; and a sister, Theresa McCarty.
Memorial services will be held June 10 at 2 p.m. at the United Church of Bethel with Pastor Richard Dumont officiating. Burial will be at the Durant cemetery in Lower Cabot.

Dorothy Anderson
1908 - 2003
BRADFORD — Dorothy Anderson, 95, passed away July 28, 2003 at Genesis Eldercare in Lebanon after a short illness.
She was born May 24, 1908 in Bradford, the daughter of Frederick and Lilla (Demar) Sanborn.
She attended Bradford schools and graduated from Teacher's College in Middlebury, VT.
In 1929, she married Nelson R. Greer. They lived in Bradford for a short while until moving to Middleboro, MA in 1935 where they owned and operated a large farm. In 1946, the couple and their three children moved to Orford.
She was later married to Elton Woodward of Orford and Arthur Anderson of Bradford, both of whom pre-deceased her.
Mrs. Anderson taught grade school in West Fairlee and Orford until her retirement. With a background in teaching, she was always willing to help others learn things the proper way. She also enjoyed sharing many fond memories of her school experiences.
She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church, Bradford, until she was unable to attend services. For many years, she held Bible study in her home until selling her home and moving to Wheelock Terrace in Hanover 15 months ago.
An accomplished artist, Mrs. Anderson painted landscapes in oil. Her paintings covered the walls of her home. She refused to sell them, instead showing her appreciation to others by painting a picture for them. Doctors, neighbors, friends and family were often the recipient of such gifts.
Survivors include two children, Joyce Gray of Lyme and Richard Greer of Lewis, NY; her children's father, Nelson R. Greer of Charlestown, NH; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, great, great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Arthur Greer; two sister, Madelyn Slack and Helen Sanborn; and two brothers, William Sanborn and Kendall Sanborn.
Funeral services were held July 31 in Grace United Methodist Church, Bradford. Burial followed in the Orford Street cemetery.

Lizzie Batchelder
1909 - 2003
EAST CORINTH — Lizzie Belle "Betty" Batchelder, 94, of East Corinth, died July 28, 2003 at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon.
She was born July 16, 1909 in East Montpelier, the daughter of Leon Andrew and Marion Estelle (Johnson) King.
She grew up and was educated in East Corinth schools. After her schooling, she was employed at Chapman's Drugstore in Fairlee.
On Dec. 9, 1929, she married Hazen L. Smith Sr. in Orford. The family lived in Orford until the couple was divorced in 1944. She moved to West Lebanon and was employed at the Nu-Bridge Restaurant on the Miracle Mile.
In 1955, she married Bertram Batchelder in Bradford. Mr. Batchelder died in 1957.
Mrs. Batchelder returned to Bradford and worked as a companion to the elderly for many local families. In 1960, she moved to Plymouth, NH where she was employed by Plymouth State College as a sorority house mother. In the mid-1960's, she retired and moved to East Corinth to live with her brother on the family homestead.
Mrs. Batchelder enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and being with senior citizens. She was an active participant with the Orange Senior Independence Program in Newbury.
Survivors include two daughters, Lorraine Howland of Lebanon and Virginia Crowe of Bristol, CT; four sons, Glenn E. Smith of Lebanon, Russell B. Smith of Fairlee, Hazen L. Smith Jr. of Franklin, NH and Gene W. Smith of North Chichester, NH; 13 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren; a sister, Grace Whittimore of North Port, FL; a brother, Lawrence G. King of East Corinth; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, William and John King; and four sisters, Marion Donald, Emma Shover, Gertrude King and Dorothy Oliver.
Funeral services were held Aug. 2 in the United Church of Christ, Bradford. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Valley cemetery, Lebanon.

Doris Ball
1916 - 2003
WARREN — Doris M. Ball, 86, of Warren, died Aug. 3, 2003 after an extended illness.
She was born in Gardner, MA on Aug. 9, 1916, the daughter of Florian and Delina (Joillert) Ledger.
Doris worked at the New Hampshire Home for the Elderly in Glencliff in the medical records department as a technician. She retired in 1979.
She was a member of the Warren Historical Society; served as town clerk of Warren; was secretary for the Warren Selectmen; served on the Warren School Board; was a trustee of the Warren Medical Center; served as the first secretary for the State Employees Association; was private secretary to the Jacobs Family at the Lake Tarleton Club; worked tirelessly on community fund raisers to establish St. John Vianney Chapel in Warren; and was a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliary.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leslie A. Ball, on Feb. 26, 1995; one daughter, Alice M. Ball; one grandson, Norman L. Sackett; and several brothers and sisters.
She is survived by two daughters, Janice M. Sackett of Warren and Lorraine A. Bixby of North Haverhill; four sons, Daniel J. Ball of Concord, NH, Bert P. Ball of Warren, Edward J. Ball of Glencliff and Albert L. Ball of Orford; 17 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; four great, great grandchildren; one brother, Clifford Ledger of North Brookfield, MA; one sister, Thelma Couture of West Brookfield, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Aug. 5 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ricker Funeral Home, Birch Street, Woodsville. A vigil prayer service will be at 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Pine Street, Woodsville. Fr. Daniel Sinibaldi will officiate. Burial will follow in Glencliff cemetery, Glencliff.

Robert Wilson Jr.
1937 - 2003
GROTON — Robert Gerald Wilson Jr., 65, of Groton, went to be with the Lord Aug. 1, 2003 following a long illness, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Ryegate Nov. 2, 1937, the son of Robert G. Wilson Sr., who died in 1951, and Pearl (Phelps) Wilson Morrison.
A lifelong area resident, he worked for the Rosa Stone Shed in South Ryegate; was a self employed dairy farmer as well as a granite cutter of LaCross memorials in Barre.
He was a member of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church, DHIA, and the Granite Cutters Union. He also enjoyed woodworking and hunting, particularly rabbit hunting.
He married the former Ruth Crown on Sept. 14, 1955.
In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his son, Robert G. Wilson III on Jan. 19, 1980.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Ruth Wilson of Groton; four daughters, Deborah M. Elliott of Ryegate, Sandra L. Kendall of South Ryegate, Bonnie L. White of Wells River and Brenda J. Bogie of Groton; 10 grandchildren; his mother, Pearl Morrison of Groton; a brother, Typer G. Wilson of Groton; two step brothers, David Morrison of Holiday, FL and Collin Morrison of Concord, NH; two stepsisters, Sharon A. Stumpf of Malden, MA and Shelley J. Lauzon of Groton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. in the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Catherine Cook, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Groton Village cemetery.
