Marjorie Brown
1914 - 2001
FAIRLEE — Marjorie A. Brown, 87, died Jan 25, 2002 at the Valley View Home for the Retired in Fairlee.
She was born Dec. 14, 1914, in Coventry, R.I., daughter of Chester A. and Bertha (Walker) Sheldon. She grew up and attended school in Sharon. At age 17, she married Frank H. Brown in Strafford. He died on June 30, 1994.
Together they had operated a dairy farm in South Strafford. In 1963 they moved to Chelsea, where they continued to farm until Mr. Brown's retirement.
Mrs. Brown spent many hours as an airplane spotter during World War II and was proud of the "Wings" she earned for her service.
She was a life member of the Lady Washington Chapter No. 86 O.E.S. of Chelsea and the former Strafford Grange, was a former member of the Universalist Church in South Strafford and a recent member of the United Church of Christ in Fairlee.
Mrs. Brown and her husband were contra dancers. They danced through New England, New York and yearly at the Tunbridge World's Fair.
Survivors include two sons, Charles Brown of South Strafford and Frank Brown, Jr., of Bradford; four daughters, Corabelle Ammel of Hartford, Barbara Sargent of Fairlee and Connecticut, Mary Lou Kelley of Brownsville and Rita DeGoosh of Fairlee; a sister, Beatrice Reynolds of South Strafford; 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond Sheldon and Clarence Sheldon; and five sisters, Florence Norby, Mabel Moulson, Viola Swift, Cora Zilch and Muriel "Pete" Colgston.
A funeral was held on Jan. 29 at the United Church of Strafford. Burial will be held in the spring in the Strafford cemetery. Contributions may be made to the United Church of Christ of Fairlee, or the Alzheimer's Association, The Green Mountain Chapter, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, VT 05601.

Linn F. Wood
1937 - 2002
CORINTH — Linn F. Wood, 64, of Corinth died May 23, 2002 at her home after a long battle with cancer.
She was born at the Olongapo United States Naval base on the Philippine Islands on Oct. 9, 1937, the daughter of Gen. Donald W. Fuller and Lucy C. Fuller.
She is survived by her three children Duncan, Meghan, and Colm; two grandchildren, Colton and Chloe; and one sister, Patricia Jacques.
At the request of the family there will be no services. Hale Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Clarence Reed
1913 - 2002
NORTH HAVERHILL — Clarence Herman Reed, 88, of North Haverhill, died May 26, 2002 at his residence.
He was born Nov.20, 1913 in Bath, the son of the late David S. and Julia (Allbee) Reed.
To most of his family and friends he was affectionately known as "Shorty." Together with his brother, Roger Reed, they owned and operated the Reed Farm in West Bath.
"Shorty" attended Bath schools and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5245, North Haverhill. A U.S. Army veteran, he participated in five major World War II campaigns in North Africa and Europe from 1941 through 1945.
In 1954, he married Bessie Lewis Ennis of Littleton and continued dairy farming until he retired 25 years ago and moved from West Bath to North Haverhill.
He was a former member of the Pine Grove Grange in Bath and the New Hampshire Farm Bureau.
He was predeceased by his wife, Bessie, on April 17, 1985; and his brother, Roger, on Dec. 4, 1989.
He leaves two stepdaughters, Gay E. Blair of Old Saybrook, CT and Patricia Clark of Londonderry NH; three granddaughters, one grandson, five great grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Washburn of Lyme; and one nephew and several cousins.
Services were held on May 29 at the Ricker Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Seminerio officiating. Burial followed in the Bath Village cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to either the Woodsville Ambulance Service PO Box 2001 Woodsville, NH 03785; or to the charity of one's choice.

James G. Thomas
1911 - 2002
WELLS RIVER — James G. Thomas, 90, of Pompano Beach, FL, formerly of Wells River, died on May 4, 2002 at the Hollywood Florida Hospital Hospice Unit with his wife at his side.
He was born Sept. 7, 1911 in Wells River, the son of John and Annie (Grant) Thomas.
He graduated from Wells River High School in 1929, and from Columbia University School of Pharmacy in 1933.
He worked as a pharmacist in Wells River and Concord NH until 1939, when he bought his own store, Thomas Pharmacy, in Wells River. In 1974 he sold the store and retired. Throughout this time he was active in village affairs, serving on the school board and as a village trustee. He was a long time member of the Wells River Congregational Church and served as a deacon and on the board of trustees.
Jim was named an Incorporator of the Wells River Savings Bank in 1944 and later was elected to the board of directors. He also served as president and chairman of the bank. Jim was on the Vermont State Board of Pharmacy, serving as its president in 1964.
He was married on May 29, 1939 to Lona (Main) Thomas, who survives. They became residents of Pompano Beach, FL in 1993, where Jim served for many years on the board of directors of their Hillsboro Shores Condominium Association.
Besides his wife Lona, he leaves cousins Marilyn (Thomas) Brandt, Sharon (Thomas) Hepfner and Arthur Thomas; other close relatives Robert J. Brock, Alan L. Brock and Thomas C. Brock; and many dear friends and associates.

A memorial service will be held at the Wells River Congregational Church on June 22 at 2 p.m.
Janice P. Holden
1935 - 2002
WOODSVILLE — Janice P. (Frost) Holden, 66, died May 24 2002 at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, following an extended illness.
She was born in Northfield, MA, July 6 1935, the daughter of Christopher J. and Josephine (Zolyniak) Frost.
She was a longtime Haverhill resident where she worked as a bookkeeper and administrative cashier at the former Grossman's Lumber Company, retiring in 1983. Upon retirement, she and her husband, Stewart moved to Hinsdale, NH where they resided until 1991 when they returned to Haverhill.
Mrs. Holden was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church of Woodsville, and a former member of St. Joseph Women's Club, and was a volunteer at the St. Joseph's Food Bank. She was also a member of Auxiliary Unit #20 of Ross-Wood American Legion, Woodsville.
She was predeceased by the husband, Stewart E. Holden, on Jan.17, 1992; a son, Steven A. Holden, on Aug. 2, 1986; and a brother, Christopher Frost, in January, 1992.
Survivors include one daughter, Lynnette Graham and husband James; one son Alfred "Jay" Holden and wife Sylvia, all of Woodsville; four grandsons, Jacob Holden, Caleb Holden, Derek Graham and James Graham; one sister, Christina Adams of Grosse Ile, MI; one brother John E. Frost of Brattleboro VT; several nieces, nephews, one grand niece, two grand nephews, and several cousins and uncles.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on May 29 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Woodsville. Father Mark Dollard, former pastor of St. Joseph's celebrated the Mass, assisted by Father Daniel Sinibaldi. Burial followed in the Ladd Street cemetery, Haverhill.

Pauline Prescott
1916 - 2002
WOODSVILLE — Pauline A. Prescott, 85, of Woodsville, died May 28, 2002 at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville. She had been a resident of the Grafton County Home since March, 2002.
She was born June 25, 1916 in Woodsville, the daughter of Asa and Cora (Leonard) Prescott.
She worked as a credit reporter in the Grafton County Register of Deeds office until age 75, at which time she began title searching for several local attorneys.
Family members include a sister, Vivian Batchelder of Woodsville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service was held on June 3 in the Pine Grove cemetery, Woodsville, with Pastor Elizabeth Davis of the Woodsville United Methodist Church officiating.

Joseph Maccini
1914 - 2002
WOODSVILLE — Joseph R. Maccini, 87, of Woodsville, died June 2, 2002 at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, after an extended illness. Mr. Maccini had been a resident of Grafton County Nursing Home for the past three years.
He was born in Wellesley, MA on Oct. 29, 1914, the son of Charles and Albena (Bergonzi) Maccini.
He graduated from Woodsville High School.
Joe served with the U.S. Army during World War II, North African Campaign, Invasion of Sicily, went to England to prepare for and served in the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Joe rose from the rank of Private to First Lieutenant, and received numerous medals.
Mr. Maccini worked in commercial trucking as a manager for Quinn Freight Lines, Gleason and Hemingway Trucking, and managed the Woodsville Bowling Lanes, which was a family run business. He retired in 1978.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Woodsville; a precinct commissioner for Woodsville, 25 year member and former fire chief of Woodsville Fire Department, member of the Haverhill Police Department for 15 years; a member of the Woodsville-Wells River Cohase Lions Club, and a member of Ross Wood Post #20 American Legion, Woodsville.
From 1977 to 1997, Joe and his wife Eva wintered in Palmetto Point, FL and summered in Pittsburg, NH.
Mr. Maccini was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Evangeline "Eve" (Merrill) Maccini, on Jan. 6, 1999; and one son, Stephen M. Maccini, on Oct. 11, 1967.
Surviving relatives include three sons, Joseph C. and Robert A. Maccini of Woodsville and Peter D. Maccini of Bow, NH; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Eight siblings predeceased him.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held June 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Pine Street, Woodsville. Fr. Daniel Sinibaldi will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic cemetery, Bath.

Margaret Boyce
1913 - 2002
MANLIUS, NY — Margaret Louise Boyce, 88, formerly of Wells River, died Oct. 1, 2002 at the home of her daughter in Manlius, NY.
She was born in Groton Nov. 19, 1913, the daughter of Horace and Carrie (Smith) James. She graduated from Groton High School.
She married Elwin A. Boyce, and they made their home in Wells River where they raised their family.
Mrs. Boyce had resided with her daughter, Patricia Fournier, in Manlius for the past six years.
She was a former member of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Boyce was predeceased by her husband, Elwin, on Dec. 11, 1991; a son, Robert Boyce on Dec. 14, 2000; two great grandchildren, Erika and Abbey Goodwin; three sisters, Emma Graham, Ethel Wheeler and Ruby Beck; and a brother, Darius James.
Survivors include two sons, Gordon Boyce of Wichita Falls, TX and Wayne Boyce of Grand Prairie, TX; two daughters, Patricia Fournier of Manlius, NY and Janice Brown of North Haverhill; nine grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Oct. 5 in the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Catherine Cook officiating. Burial followed n Boltonville cemetery, Newbury.
