Services for Kelley held Monday
WILLIAMSTOWN — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for John C. "Jack" Kelley, 61, of 141 Higgins Drive, Williamstown, was celebrated Monday, June 26, 2001, 10 a.m., in St. Patrick's Church, Williamstown, with the Rev. Jerome Joseph Day, O.S.B. of St. Anselm's College, Manchester, N.H., officiating.
The acolyte was Regina Rouse. The pall was unfolded by Shaun Kelley, son, and Kim Daniels, daughter. The ministers of the word were Nancy Kelley, daughter-in-law, and Michael Daniels, son-in-law. The offertory giftbearers were Marie Esposito Moon and Charles Winslow, longtime friends. Words of love and reflection were delivered by Patrick W. Kelley Jr., brother, and Shaun Kelley, son.
The organist was Dwight Killam and the soloist was Sandra King.
Burial with military honors followed in Eastlawn cemetery, Williamstown, with members of the Richard Ruether Post #152 American Legion, Williamstown, conducting military honors. Charles Noyes, Legion chaplain, offered the veteran's prayer. Herbert Palmer read "What The Flag Stands For." The flag was folded by Howard Oakes and Gary Walsh and presented to Mr. Kelley's son, Shaun. Taps was played by Ronald Whitney. In attendance were Linda Goodell, Francis Nolan and Richard "Bud" Trombley. The bagpiper at the church and cemetery was Robert Tunnicliffe.
Pallbearers were Patrick W. Kelley Jr., brother; Michael Daniels, son-in-law; Charles Winslow, Michael "Micky" Dolan, nephew; Daniel LaCosse and James Kelley.
Mr. Kelley died June 21. The Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, North Adams, was in charge of arrangements.
George E. Kenyon, 86, of Williamstown
George Edmund Kenyon, 86, of White Oaks Road, Williamstown, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at North Adams Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
Born in North Pownal, Vt., on July 25, 1913, he was the son of George Parley Kenyon and Bertha (Jones) Kenyon. He attended Pownal schools.
He went to work on local farms in Pownal until June 30, 1942, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with the Army Air Corps as an auto equipment mechanic. He also refueled aircraft planes and was last stationed at the Whitehorse, Canada, refueling station. He was discharged Nov. 28, 1945.
He married Frances Mildred Thorson and they resided in Williamstown.
He was employed for 25 years as an oil delivery truck driver by the Mason Oil Co. He later worked for McMahon Oil Co. in the same capacity until his retirement in 1986, after which he worked on a limited basis.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Peter John Kenyon of Pownal; a granddaughter and two great-grandchildren, all of Pownal; two sisters, Marion E. Moloff of Williamstown and Ruth M. Packard of Pittsfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
At Mr. Kenyon's request there will be no visiting hours or funeral service. Burial will be in Eastlawn cemetery at the convenience of the family.
The omission of flowers is requested. Donations may be made to the Northern Berkshire Visiting Nurse Association or the charity of the donor's choice through the George Hopkins Funeral Home, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, Mass. 01267, which is in charge of arrangements.
Raymond L. Merrigan, 81, former North Adams postmaster
Retired North Adams postmaster Raymond Lawrence Merrigan, 81, of Glen Ave., died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at the home of his daughter, Helenmary T. Francis in Chicopee. Death followed a brief illness.
Born in South Deerfield on Dec. 4, 1918, he was the son of Francis of Teresa (Tucker) Merrigan. He graduated in 1937 from Deerfield Academy and studied at Villanova University. Prior to entering the service in 1942, he was associated with the Greenfield office of The Springfield Union as a reporter and photographer. During his term with the U.S. Army in World War II, he served as a drill instructor and as an infantryman and military correspondent while stationed in the Philippines and Japan.
Soon after the war, Merrigan worked as a reporter for The North Adams Transcript, covering Shelburne Falls. In 1949, he joined the paper's advertising department, but kept his hand in the newsroom as a part-time photographer for the sports desk. He was awarded first prize in the annual news photo contest on several occasions by the New England Associated Press Association. Merrigan remained a part-time sports photographer long after leaving The Transcript to become North Adams postmaster in 1961, which he held until his retirement in 1991.
He was long active in North Adams politics and government, serving for several years on the North Adams City Council and City Democratic Committee, before non-partisan requirements for civil service ended his involvement with these groups.
He continued serving the community as the non-partisan unofficial spokesperson for the ad hoc Concerned Citizens for Downtown Development, a coalition of local residents seeking wider representation in proposals to develop the downtown area, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus, North Adams Lodge of Elks, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Catholic Charities and the St. Francis Church parish council.
He served as an active member and president of both the Western Massachusetts Postmasters Association and the former Freeman Parent Group and Freeman-Greylock Parent Group. He was also active in the right-to-life organizations.
He was married to the former Helen M. McKillop of Belchertown and they observed their 55th anniversary before her death in 1994.
Besides his daughter, he leaves four sons, Raymond L. Merrigan Jr. of Guilford, Vt., Dr. Daniel M. Merrigan of Boston, Michael F. Merrigan of Dallas, Texas, and T. Timothy Merrigan of Shelburne Falls; a brother, Thomas W. Merrigan of Greenfield; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
A daughter, Suzanne H. Holt, died April 21, 2000, and his older brother, Francis T. Merrigan, died in 1987.
Services from the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, West Chapels, North Adams are Saturday, July 1, at 8:15 a.m. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, North Adams. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery, Holyoke, at 12:30 p.m.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday, June 30, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Naughton services held Thursday
NORTH ADAMS — A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Francis Matthew Naughton, 82, of 418 North Palm Way, Lake Worth, Fla., was celebrated Thursday, June 29, 11 a.m., in St. Francis of Assisi Church, North Adams.
The Rev. Michael W.T. Twardzik, pastor of St. Francis, Notre Dame and Our Lady of Mercy Churches, North Adams, officiated. He was assisted by the Rev. Mr. Robert Moulton, deacon of the three churches.
The acolyte was Edward Buckley. The organist was Diane Maynard. The pall was unfolded by Michael Naughton, James Naughton and Jeffrey Naughton, sons, and Sandy Shields, daughter-in-law. The crucifix was placed on the pall by Kaye Durkin, daughter-in-law. The ministers of the word were Shannon Naughton and Ryananne Naughton, granddaughters. The offertory giftbearers were Kaye Durkin, daughter-in-law, and Elizabeth Naughton and Ellen Naughton, granddaughters. Words of love and reflection were delivered by Jeffrey Naughton, assisted by James Naughton and Michael Naughton.
Burial followed with military honors conducted by members of the Frank R. Stiles Post #125 American Legion, North Adams. Anthony Sacco offered the veteran's prayer and folded the flag with Frank Merrigan.
The flag was presented to Mr. Naughton's wife, Kathryn. Matthew Boillat played taps.
In attendance were Richard Dupre, Paul Gigliotti, Louis Casuscelli and Robert Reardon.
Elizabeth Naughton, granddaughter, read a poem at the graveside.
Mr. Naughton died June 24. The Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, North Adams, was in charge of arrangements.
Schwantor services held Tuesday
CHESHIRE — A graveside service and burial for David L. Schwantor, 40, of High Street, Stafford Springs, Conn., took place Tuesday, June 27, 3:30 p.m., in the Cheshire cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Begley, pastor of St. Mary of Assumption Church, Cheshire, officiating.
Pallbearers were Nate Marr, Andrew Cornell, Lee Kempton, Chris Cadz, Brian Harp and John Wilson.
Mr. Schwantor died June 23. The Trottier-Pringle Funeral Home, Adams, was in charge of local arrangements.
Edward J. Zaleski, 81, of Cheshire
Edward Joseph Zaleski, 81, of 73 West Mountain Road, Cheshire, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, at Berkshire Medical Center, Pittsfield, after a long illness.
Born March 14, 1919, in Pittsfield, he was the son of Steven and Alice Slawikowski Zaleski. He attended schools in Hinsdale.
He was employed by Crane & Co., Dalton, for 40 years a truck driver, retiring in 1983.
He was a former member of the Cheshire Lions Club, a member of the Cheshire Rod & Gun Club and, years ago, had been active as a Little League coach in Cheshire. Many years ago, he was an amateur boxer in North Adams.
He leaves his wife, the former Elsie Perry, whom he married Nov. 2, 1946; a son, David Zaleski of Adams; two daughters, Helen Alderman of Hinsdale and Peggy Pierce of Cheshire; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held Monday, June 3, at the Cheshire cemetery with the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of the Berkshire Union Chapel, officiating.
There are no calling hours.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department, First Baptist Church, Cheshire, or to the Berkshire Union Chapel through the Dery-Cheshire Funeral Home, 121 North State Road, Cheshire, Mass. 01225, which is in charge of arrangements.
COMMITTAL SERVICE
FAIRLEE — A committal service will be held June 30 at 1 p.m. at the Blood Brook cemetery, Ely, for Robert C. Morey, of Monroe, who died May 3, 1999. For the past two years, Dartmouth Medical School has experienced his generous donation.
Anne Ley
1933 - 2001
HOLLISTON, MA — Anne (Blodgett) Ley, 67, of Holliston, MA, died April 2, 2001 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Lincoln, MA on April 28, 1933, the daughter of W. Putnam and Charlotte (Towle) Blodgett.
Anne moved with her parents and older brother to Bradford in the spring of 1935 after the purchase of their farm on the Upper Plain.
She was a member of the Class of 1951 at Bradford Academy until leaving at the beginning of her senior year to attend the Northfield School for Girls in Massachusetts.
Until her illness, she was looking forward to returning to Bradford this month to attend her 50thhigh school reunion.
Anne was a 1956 graduate of the University of Vermont. She then moved to Boston and accepted employment with S.S. Pierce and Company.
On Sept. 16, 1961, she married William Ley in the "Old South" Church in Boston. From that time on, they made their home in Holliston.
Anne is survived by her husband, Bill; their sons, Billy of Texas and Johnny of Arizona; her brothers, Putnam of Lyme Center and Leland of Essex Junction, VT; and two nephews and two nieces.
Stanley Brock
1907 - 2001
WEST NEWBURY — Stanley Page Brock, 93, of West Newbury, died June 22, 2001 at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville.
He was born Aug. 16, 1907 in West Newbury, the son of Moses and Louise (Page) Brock.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Brock of West Newbury; two sons; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held June 26 at 11 a.m. in the West Newbury Church. The Rev. Donald Towle will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Oxbow cemetery, Newbury.
Hale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Alice Bragg
1917 - 2001
NORTH THETFORD — Alice E. Bragg, 83, died June 21, 2001 at Brookside Nursing Home, Bradford.
She was born Oct. 17, 1917 in Southborough, MA, a daughter of John Baptiste and Alma (Girouard) LaMontagne.
She is survived locally by her husband, Kenneth Bragg of North Thetford; two sons, Carroll Bragg of Thetford Center and David Bragg of North Thetford; and two daughters, Sally
Sweet and Irena Jones, both of North Thetford.
A graveside memorial service will be held June 30 at 11:30 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge cemetery, North Thetford. The Rev. Bertha Brown will officiate.

Timothy Zanes
LISBON — Timothy Page Zanes, 44, of Lisbon, died Oct. 13, 2001 at his home.
Services were held Oct. 17 in Lisbon. Burial was in Grove Hill cemetery, Lisbon.

Jane Stiles
1914 - 2001
LISBON — Jane (Gregory) Stiles, 86, of Lisbon, died Oct. 13, 2001 in Weeks Memorial Hospital, Lancaster, after a brief illness.
She was born in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY Dec. 7, 1914, the daguther of Albert and Bess Gregory.
She is survived by two daughters.
Burial was in Grove Hill cemetery, Lisbon.
Memorial donations may be made to Lisbon FAST Squad; or the Lisbon Public Library.
Leonard Stevens
LYMAN — Leonard Arthur Stevens, 80, of Lyman, died Oct. 11, 2001 at Littleton Regional Hospital, Littleton.
Born in Lisbon, he was the son of Lawrence and Margret Healy Stevens.
He is survived by four children, including Timothy Stevens of Vershire; and six grandchildren.
