HERBERT ALEXANDER PETERSON
ST. ALBANS -- Herbert Alexander Peterson, 81, passed away August 12, 2001 after a long illness. He was born June 24, 1920 in St. Albans, the son of Algot W. and Anna (Olson) Peterson.
As a youth Herb was an outstanding athlete and football remained his sport through college and a passion throughout his life. His college career was interrupted by the Second World War and he joined the Air Force and served as a gunner in the 468th bomb group serving in the Pacific theater. During his service he was shot down twice and forced to bail out over the Indian Ocean. Upon returning home, he remained fiercely proud of his country and the principles on which it was founded. He retired from the Central Vermont Public Service and enjoyed many years of golf and his home on French Hill. Herb spent many hours working to preserve the history and honor of local military veterans who so courageously served their country and communities.
Herb was a member of the Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Green Mountain Post # 1, American Legion, the Champlain Country Club and the St. Albans Historical Society .
Survivors include his step-son, William Peterson, a grandson, William Peterson, granddaughters, Suzan and Ashley Peterson, several nieces and nephews, and dear friend of many years Betty Eldridge of Swanton. He was predeceased by his wife, Gladys on October 29, 1977, sisters Eleanor Foster on December 10, 1984 and Florence Rath on September 1, 1988 and brother, Allen Peterson on April 15, 1985.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. There will be no visitation. Interment will follow in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the St. Albans Historical Society and Museum, P.O. Box 722, St. Albans, VT 05478. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. LUCILLE E. GIRARD
RICHFORD- Mrs. Lucille E. (Boivin) Girard, age 74, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, at her home on Liberty Street, following an extended illness. She was born in St. Albans July 12, 1927 daughter of Germaine (Blanchette) Boivin and the late Charles Boivin. April 22, 1946 she married Edward Girard who died Dec. 30, 1989. Lucille was employed as a waitress at several area restaurants and for the last several years of her employment she was with the George Yett Bag Company. Lucille enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She was a stamp and coin collector.
Her survivors include her mother Germaine Benoit of Las Vegas, Nev., her sisters Cecile Nugent and Dorothy Carabine, both of Las Vegas, Nev., Pauline Bushey of Jericho, an aunt Blanche Gignac of St. Albans, three generations of nieces and nephews as well as many cousins. Besides her husband, Edward, she was predeceased by her father Charles, her sister Leona Pollister and brothers Henry (Stanley) Boivin and Roger Boivin.
A graveside service will be held Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. at the site of the Boivin family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans. There will be no public calling hours. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
IRENE S. PATTEE
NEWPORT/GEORGIA -- Mrs. Irene S. Pattee, 78, passed away Thursday evening Aug. 9, 2001, at Northwestern Medical Center. She was born in Georgia on Jan. 7, 1923, the daughter of Russell Collins Sunderland and Winifred Belle (Newton) Sunderland. She was a 1940 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and then the St. Albans Hospital School of Nursing. On Oct. 12, 1945 in Georgia, Irene married James T. Pattee.
Irene was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, an active member of the United Church of Newport and the Georgia Plain Baptist Church; an avid sports fan; she was the first recipient of the" Sports Fan of the Year Award" from the North Country Union High School, and always a source of support for her many friends.
Besides her husband of 55 years, James of Newport, she is survived by two sons, Roger and his wife, Barbara of Detroit Mich.; Allen and his wife Terri of Bedford, N.H.; two daughters, Martha Heath of Westford; and Becky Buczynski of Woodbridge, Va.; her twin sister, Katherine and her husband Marvin Way of St. Albans; a brother, Ronald and his wife Charlotte Sunderland of Georgia; a sister-in-law, Edith Pattee of Georgia; a brother-in-law, Eldon LaPlante of Pittsfield, Maine; seven grandchildren, Molly, Kate and Elise Heath, Adrian Pattee and Bethany, Daniel and Sarah Pattee, two great grandchildren, Juliana Gagne and Adrian Pattee, II; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many close friends. She was predeceased by her sisters, Gladys, Joyce and Dorothy; a brother, Russell; sister-in-law, Carolyn Pattee; and brother-in-law, George Pattee.
A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, Aug. 13, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the United Church of Newport, Third Street, Newport. A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Georgia Plain Baptist Church. Interment will be in the family lot in Georgia Plain Cemetery. ELAINE D. ABELL
MONTGOMERY CTR. -- Elaine D. Abell, age 88, died Thursday morning, Aug. 9, 2001, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston.
She was born in Enosburg June 5, 1913, the daughter of the late Leo J. & Elizabeth (Gover) Abell.
She was a resident of Montgomery Center most of her life and was a member of the Montgomery Bap tist Church. She taught school in Sampsonville for a few years and then attended Johnson State College. She then taught at schools in Waterville, Johnson and Johnson State College. She was a member of the Vermont Retired Teachers Assoc. She was also very active in town affairs, serving as Librarian, Lister, Auditor, Board of Civil Authority, and Zoning Board. She will be remembered in the community as the cat lady.
She is survived by a nephew, Loren Gilbert of Hinesburg; a niece, Sydney Graves of Dover, Del.; special friends and neighbors, Gaston & Theresa Begnoche of Montgomery Center, several grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Leo Abell and a sister, Edith Gilbert.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday morning, Aug. 21, 2001, at 11 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls. Interment will follow in the North Fairfield Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.

ALICE MARY BELLROSE
SWANTON -- Mrs. Alice Mary Bellrose, 81, a lifelong area resident died Wednesday morning, Aug. 8, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
Alice was born in East Highgate May 11, 1920, the daughter of the late William and Angelina (Longe) Blondo. She attended schools in Highgate and was married to George Bevins who predeceased her. She later married Leonard Bellrose who also predeceased her.
For the past six years Alice resided at Giordano Manor in Swanton. She was a member of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton and a longtime member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.
Alice is survived by a son, William Bevins of Texas; two daughters, Lillie Dean of Florida and Betty Greenwood of Essex and a special grandson and granddaughter, Norman Hill of Virginia and Patricia Hill of Essex. She also leaves three aunts, Catherine Medor and Margaret Bellrose of Swanton and Helen Renalt of Boynton Beach, Fla. and a very special friend, Beulah Sylvester residing at Giordano Manor. Alice is also survived by her faithful and devoted caregiver, Carlotta Vance of Swanton, as well as numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Carlotta and all of Alice's family would like to give special thanks to the staff of Giordano Manor, especially Roxanne Ladabouche, Nadine Hughes and Sarah Jerry for all the love and support they have given to Alice throughout the past six years.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at 10 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, the director of St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte will officiate. Interment will follow in the Bellrose family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. Following the prayers of committal family and friends are invited to a luncheon reception to be held at the home of Catherine Medor, 18 Greenwich Street in Swanton. LINDA LAPAN HEMINGWAY
ST. ALBANS/SWANTON Ms. Linda Lapan Hemingway, 49, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 7, 2001, at her sister's home on Lower Newton Road in St. Albans Town.
Linda was born in Swanton, Jan. 4, 1952, the daughter of the late Noah, Sr. and Mary Jane (Gardner) Lapan. She was a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and attended the former St. Anne's Academy and Swanton High School.
Linda leaves a very special sister, Mrs. Theresa Brow of St. Albans Town who was more like Linda's mother. Also surviving are three children, Louis Joseph Hemingway, III and his girlfriend Raquel, Peter Noah Hemingway and his girlfriend Beth, and Shari Lee Hemingway Gibson and a special son-in-law, Geoffrey Matthew Gibson. She also leaves four grandchildren, Ashley Ray Hemingway, Kayle Lee Gibson, Brookie Taylor Gibson and Louis Joseph Hemingway, IV; six stepgrandchildren, Allen Scott Gibson, Matthew Dean Gibson, Amber Sue Gibson, Brookie Marshall, Kaitlyn Marshall and Beverly Hay Ford. Other survivors include her brothers and sisters, Evelyn Lampman of Swanton, Norman Lapan and his wife Janice of Highgate, Robert Lapan and his wife Shirley of Swanton, Phyllis Draper and her husband Maurice of Milton, Larry Lapan Sr. and his wife Beulah of Swanton and Noah Lapan, Jr. and his wife Debbie of Highgate; two sisters-in-law, Janice Lapan and Elizabeth Lapan, both of Swanotn and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, James and Fred Lapan; a sister, Shirley Trombley, and a special brother-in-law, Donald E. Brow.
Linda's family wishes to thank the members of Independent Living for all their assistance over the years and a very special thank you to longtime friends, Mr. and Mrs. Fernand Beaulieu.
Linda will be remembered for her great love of country music, especially Alan Jackson and enjoyed dancing to "A Kid Up." She had a wonderful laugh and a great sense of humor and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends and by all who knew and loved her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, the director of St. Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. HEATHER A. (LAWTON) MURPHY
MALDEN, MASS. -- Heather A. Murphy, 53, passed away on Aug. 3, 2001 at her residence in Malden. She was born in St. Albans, December 22, 1947 the daughter of Arthur D. and Thelma (Vincent) Lawton. She was married to William E. (Ron) Murphy who predeceased her.
Survivors include her mother, Thelma of Medford, Mass., a brother, David Lawton and his wife, Debra of Wilmington, two aunts, Dorothy Larry and Marguerite Duffy both of St. Albans and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husband, Heather was predeceased by her father Arthur D. Lawton, her sister, Gail Chagnon and brother, Douglas Lawton.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday Aug. 7, 2001 in the Immaculate Conception Church in Malden. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
J. RONALD REED
ST. JOHNSBURY -- J. Ronald Reed, 81, of St. Johnsbury died at his home on 331 Summer St. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001.
Mr. Reed was longtime vice president and insurance agent at Reed Insurance Agency in St. Johnsbury. He was a member of Mt. Sinai Temple #3 S hrine and was dedicated to the Shriner's band, his passion for over 50 years.
Predeceased by his dear wife Virginia in 1991, he is survived by his second wife, Dot Reed and her family; two daughters, Elaine Magnan and husband John of St. Albans, Martha Reed of St. Johnsbury; three grandchildren, Scott, Angela and Tyler; his brother, Russell Reed and wife Virginia of St. Johnsbury.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the North Congregational Church on Main St. in St. Johnsbury. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the Sayles Funeral Home Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. where a Masonic service is being planned for 7:45 p.m.

MARY WILSON, L.P.N.
ST. ALBANS, VT./TUCSON, ARIZ. -- Mrs. Mary Wilson, L.P.N., age 99, widow of Leonard C. Wilson, died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2001, in Tucson, Ariz. She was born in Groveton, N.H., Aug. 11, 1901, daughter of the late William and Isabelle (McDonald) Downing. She married Leonard Wilson in Groveton, N.H., where they lived for several years before moving to St. Albans. Mary will be remembered as a longtime nurse at the St. Albans Hospital. The family were communicants of St. Mary's Church. In 1986 Mary and Leonard moved to Tucson. Mr. Wilson died in Tucson Nov. 13, 1990.
Her survivors include her five children and their spouses, Veronica and George Allen of Orlando, Fla., Leonard and Helen Wilson of Tucson, Ariz., Clarence and Natalie Wilson of Zephyrhills, Fla., Pauline Bart of Tucson, Ariz., Patricia and David Cass of Tucson, Ariz., several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Greta O'Connor and son-in-law, Joseph Bart.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, (which would be her 100th birthday) at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Interment will follow in the Wilson family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
