Kenneth Clifford Mashtare

South Alburgh, Vermont - Kenneth Clifford Mashtare, age 77 years, a lifelong resident of this area died Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2008, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

Born in North Hero, Vermont on, June 12, 1931, he was the son of the late Clifford and Mary Jane (Hutchins) Mashtare.

He attended schools both in North Hero and Alburgh and on; October 6, 1956, was married to the former Marguerite Hutchins who survives him.

Kenneth was a member of Columbus Lodge 11 F. &A.M. in Alburgh as well as the South Alburgh Community Faith Chapel.

Ken began his long and hard working career when he was 11 years old, first working for Wallace Aubin of North Hero and while still in elementary school working for Harold Deyo on the Old Poor Farm.

He lived with his Uncle Aaron and also helped out on his farm.

When his sister was born he returned home to care for his mother along with baby sitting.

In 1950 he enlisted in the United States Air Force serving just a short time and received his honorable discharge in 1951 due to a high blood pressure condition.

Following his discharge from the service, Ken began working for the Rutland Railroad until it closed in the early 1960’s.

He then began working in the construction industry with Poquette and Bruley assisting in the building of the second motel at Mother’s Lunch in North Hero.

He continued working construction over the next several years employed by, Cass-Warner, Wright & Morrissey, Murray & Blake, Engineer’s Inc., and Marcelino Inc.

During the time of lay offs and shortages of work Ken continued working for two seasons, beginning in 1980 in Point of Rocks, Wyoming.

There he operated heavy equipment moving large coal piles to fuel the local power plant and also ran an earthmover, (pan), on various other construction jobs.

Back in Franklin County, Vermont Ken worked for Blow & Cote on the construction of the New John’s Bridge in Swanton as well as the new Highgate Power Plant.

He then moved with that company to Littleton, NH working on a new power plant there, and was subsequently hired by another company to operate a construction crane for their part of that same job.

He also worked in the Isle La Motte Quarry and was employed on the oil well that was established on his father-in-laws land.

As a professional construction worker Ken worked on high-rise buildings participating in everything from steel walking to crane operator.

He also worked summers helping the local farmers with their haying to make a little extra money. He will always be remembered as an extremely hard worker who was loved by his family and respected by young and old alike.

Following his marriage to Marguerite in 1956 they lived in Burlington for a short while, later moving to Alburgh and living in the old schoolhouse that they both attended as children.

They later purchased a mobile home and it was erected on their property which was part of the family farm.

Ken leaves three sons, Michael and his wife Kimberly, Mark and his wife Merry and Alan and his wife Kathy; nine grandchildren, Adam, Joshua, Jacob, Molly, Mason, Meredith, Ethan, Ryan and Brenden. Also surviving are four brothers, Walter, Donald, Stewart, Earl and one sister, Theresa Maskell; two sisters-in-law, Betty Pike and Diana Matozevich; one brother-in-law, Harry Hutchins, Jr. and his 100 year old father-in-law, Harry Hutchins, Sr. as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He also leaves their “good neighbors” Jim and Deb Perry who always thought of them as “Mom and Dad”.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Herbert and Millard; two brothers-in-law, Robert Pike and Leon Maskell and one sister-in-law, Frances Mashtare.

Relatives and friends are invited to a time of visitation from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008, at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, (802-868-3331).

Members of Columbus Lodge #11 F. &A.M. will conduct a modified Ritualistic Service at 5:30 p.m.

Interment will take place later at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers the family requests gifts in Ken’s memory be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, (Grand Isle District) Vermont U.S. Route 2 South Hero 05486 or to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston 05495.

Kenneth George Baldwin

Swanton, Vermont - Mr. Kenneth George Baldwin, age 82 years, a resident on this area since 1956, died early Thursday afternoon, April 24, 2008, at the Haven Health Care Center in Saint Albans Town.

Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on, April 15, 1926, he was the son of the late George and Annie (Pilling) Baldwin.

He attended Massachusetts schools and on, November 8, 1947, was married to the former Ruth Stafford who predeceased him on October 25, 1999.

He was employed for many years and retired from the United States Border Protection Service.

Ken faithfully served his country in the United States Navy during World War II and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert Glidden Post 758, in Saint Albans. Over the years he had been active in Swanton’s Seventy-Six Lodge #14, F&A.M., was an honorary member of Masonic Lodge # 166 of Williamstown, New Jersey and a member of the Savard of Bunker Hill.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and photography, having photographed every covered bridge throughout the State of Vermont.

Ken leaves two daughters and their husbands, Pamela and James Petrini of Vineland, New Jersey and Priscilla and Gary Taylor of West Swanton; five grandchildren, Karl Taylor and his wife Heidi, Kristy Taylor and her fiancé Jason Benjamin, Andrea Petrini and Lea Petrini and fiancée Michael Stavoli; two great grandchildren, Dalton and Kassidy Benjamin; one niece and two nephews.

Besides his wife and parents he was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Baldwin in 1993 and most recently by a grandson, Kevin Kenneth Taylor on April 15, 2008.

At the request of the family Funeral Services and Interment will be private and at their convenience. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that gifts in Ken’s memory be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1420-3400 De Maisonneuve Blvd. W, Montreal, Quebec Canda H3Z9Z9, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton 05488 or to the, Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, Saint Albans 05478.

Arrangements have been under the direction of The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton 05488, (802-868-3331).

Charlotte Marion (Currier) Clark

Swanton, Vermont - Mrs. Charlotte Marion (Currier) Clark, age 80 years, a resident of the Church Street School Apartments, died Monday evening, April 7, 2008, at the Northwestern Medical center in Saint Albans City.

Born in Vergennes, Vermont on, July 6, 1927, she was the daughter of the late, Carl and Lena (Duplease) Currier.

She was married to Lloyd E. Clark for 55 years until his death in 1999.

Mrs. Clark loved gardening and was famous for her homemade breads, especially her raisin bread.

She will be remembered as a friend to everyone in the School Apartments on Church Street, especially beloved by her friends, Eva Boudreau and Rachel Martel.

She was a member of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Mrs. Clark leaves her children, Lloyd L. Clark and wife Joan of Phoenix, MD, Veronica B. Johnston and husband Jerry of Highgate Falls, Leo E. Clark of Troy, NY, James A. Clark and wife Victoria of Delmar. NY and Charlaine J. Jones and husband Jerry of Hoosick Falls, NY; a brother, Donald Currier of Platte City, MO; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Clark was predeceased by two sisters, Marlene Merrow and Elaine Grover.

A Memorial Service is being planned for late May and will be announced at a later date.

Father Benedict C. Kiely will officiate.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers gifts in Mrs. Clark’s memory be made to, The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in care of, Father Benedict C. Kiely, 65 Canada Street, Swanton 05488 or to the, Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, Saint Albans 05478.

Richard John DeCelle

Swanton, Vermont - Mr. Richard John DeCelle, age 85 years, a resident of the Saint Albans Road for more than 60 years died early Saturday morning, May 3, 2008, in the Northwestern Medical Center with his beloved daughter, Cheryl Ann and niece, Pam Kozikowski at his side.

Born in Swanton, Vermont on July 23, 1922, he was the son of the late Maurice Mitchell and Grace Evelyn (Comstock) DeCelle.

He attended Fairfield schools but left at and early age to assist in the operation of the family farm.

On February 8, 1945, he was married to the former Lillian Minckler who predeceased him on September 30, 2007, after 62 years of marriage.

Mr. DeCelle faithfully served his country as a Surgical Technician in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, receiving the American Theater Campaign Ribbon, as well as the Good Conduct and Victory Medals..

He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on February 21, 1946.

Following his military service he became employed at the former Sheldon Pulp Mill, (later known as Boise Cascade), retiring after 42 years of dedicated employment.

He also assisted his wife Lillian in the operation of several businesses including, Sherry’s Dress Shop in Swanton, DeCelle Manufacturing in Richford and The Central Restaurant located downtown in Swanton Village.

Mr. DeCelle was also known for his love of tinkering and his ability to fix anything especially sewing machines.

He was a longtime parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

He leaves his daughter and caregiver, Cheryl Ann DeCelle of South Burlington; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, James and Cecile Minkler of Swanton along with numerous nieces nephews, cousins and friends.

Besides his wife Lillian and his parents, Richard was predeceased by five brothers, Maurice Dezan, Raymond DeCelle, Theodore DeCelle, Fred DeCelle and Francis DeCelle and six sisters, Isabelle Reed, Evelyn Jettie, Rita DeCelle, Mary DeCelle, Eula “Pat” St. Denis and Beulah “Midget” Smith Thurston.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at 1 p.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Father Benedict C. Kiely will be the celebrant and homilist.

The Rite of Committal with Full Military Honors will follow at the DeCelle family lot in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, (802-868-3331), on Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. until 12 Noon.

Gifts in Mr. DeCelle’s memory may be made to, The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in care of, Father Benedict C. Kiely, 65 Canada Street, Swanton 05488.

Matthew James Gardner

Saint Albans City - Matthew James Gardner, age 25 years, a resident of Barlow Street in Saint Albans City died early Wednesday morning, April 9, 2008, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

Born in Saint Albans on, April 16, 1982, he was the son of Cindy McNally and Robert G. Gardner. He attended Missisquoi Valley Union High School and for the past several years was a painter with Dick Leahy Painting.

Matt was as an avid outdoorsman who loved to ski and fish. He enjoyed playing his guitar and was also known as a computer wiz.

He was considered by many as an excellent automotive mechanic and was always available in an emergency to repair someone’s car.

Matthew leaves his mother, Cindy McNally and companion Richard E. Leahy and his father, Robert G. Gardner and companion Donna Champagne all of Saint Albans; his maternal grandparents, Richard and Doris McNally of Lexington, KY; paternal grandmother, Lorraine Gardner of Saint Albans; two sisters, Kristen Major of Franklin, and Bobbi Jo Gardner of Saint Albans; a brother, Edward Major of Enosburg; aunts and uncles, Laurie Gage of Saint Albans, Heidi McNally and partner Jim Putnam of South Alburgh, Shirley “Bug” Gardner of Saint Albans, Arnold “Popeye” Gardner of Saint Albans, Matthew and Jennifer Watkins of Lexington, KY and Angela McNally Moury of Lexington, KY; special cousins and fishing buddies, Adam Hughes, Daniel Reynolds, James Gardner and “Little” Terry Gardner; his girlfriend, Michelle Robtoy of Sheldon. He also leaves many cousins and extended family.

Matt truly valued the time he spent with Dan and Sara Brown and Tim and Carrie Staples.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandmother Margaret “Peggy” McArthur, paternal grandfather, Gerald Gardner and uncle, Terry Gardner.

A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton, (802-868-3331).

The Reverend Herman Benjamin will officiate. Interment Services will follow in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Canada Street, Swanton.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.

Gifts in Matt’s memory may be made to the family at 42 Barlow Street, Saint Albans 05478.

Catherine (Taylor) Grandchamp

Swanton/St. Albans - Catherine (Taylor) Grandchamp, 87, of St. Albans and formerly, for many years of Swanton, died peacefully, Thursday, April 17, 2008 following a brief illness.

Born in Fletcher on July 6, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Elazer and Jennie (Thompson) Taylor.

Catherine was predeceased by her husband of sixty years, Amory in 1997.

Catherine was well known in Swanton for her baking and cooking skills, often providing meals at the Swanton American Legion where she was a lifetime member and also frequently assisted Amory as bartender and chief cook and bottle washer.

Mrs. Grandchamp loved and had amazing healing powers with animals.

People often dropped off sick dogs, cats, birds and a menagerie of other animals that Catherine nursed back to health.

She also had that talent with people, often taking in boarders in her Swanton home.

In her last four years, Catherine lived with her only and beloved daughter, Tina Lang and family of St. Albans.

For the last five months, Catherine was a resident of Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center where she made many friends.

She is survived by her only daughter, Tina Lang and Tina’s husband, Scott; grandchildren Amanda Connelly and her husband Randall of Highgate, Kyle Gagner and his friend Missy LaBounty of Fairfield and Allison Gagner of St. Albans as well as their father, Clovis Gagner of St. Albans.

Catherine is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Blake Connelly and Kaleb Gagner and several nieces and nephews.

In addition, Catherine and Amory helped to raise two nephews, Sonny Austin of Virginia who survives her and Neil Austin who predeceased her in 2000.

She was predeceased by all of her siblings.

Catherine’s family would like to warmly acknowledge the care and support she received from the office and staff of Dr. Ned Shulman, Franklin County Home Health, Haven Health and Rehabilitation Center and particularly the caring and compassionate nursing staff and doctors at Northwestern Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 11 AM at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton where friends may call prior to the service from 10-11 AM.

Following interment in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery, Swanton, Catherine’s family will host a reception at the home of Tina and Scott Lang, 29 Adams St., St. Albans.

Gifts in Catherine’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, 05478.
