SHAWN E. STURGEON
JERICHO - Shawn E. Sturgeon, 32, died unexpectedly at his home, Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007.
Shawn was born on Sept. 29, 1975, in Burlington, Vt.
He was a master plumber and the owner of Sturgeon Plumbing and Heating.
Above all else, Shawn loved being with his children. He enjoyed all outdoor sports, camping, hiking, fishing, and snowboarding. He will be deeply missed by his friends and relatives.
Shawn is survived by his wife, Mary Sturgeon of Fairfax, and their children, Logan Michael Sturgeon and Ashlyn Elizabeth Sturgeon; by his father and mother, Larry and Patricia (Sturgeon) Stone of St. Albans; his sister, April Stone and friend, Mark Madden, and nephew, Jonathan Madden, all of Georgia; his uncles and aunts, Robert and Linda Sturgeon of Franklin, Roger “Butch” and Autumn Bursey of Pittsfield, Sam Cross of Georgia; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Michael and Martha Leech of Fairfax; his brother-in-law, Jack Leech of Fairfax; and by several cousins.
Shawn was predeceased by his grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth Sturgeon; and his aunt, Sharon Maskell.
There will be no visiting hours or funeral service at this time. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date.

EAST FAIRFIELD - A Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude J. Couture, who passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2007, was held on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony-St. George Catholic Church in East Fairfield with the Reverend Leonidas B. Laroche, pastor and the Reverend W. Andre Houle, pastor of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and former pastor of St. Anthony's, con-celebrating.
The Funeral Pall was draped on Gertrude's casket by her children, Fran Catron, Fern Biggie, Claire McManus and Mark Couture. The Crucifix was then placed by her husband, Lionel Couture. Musical selections, "Amazing Grace," “Ave Maria," and "I Leave You Memories" were by organist and vocalist, Mary Jo Gillilan. The Holy Scriptures were proclaimed by granddaughters, Erin Biggie and Bridget McManus. Presentation of the Eucharistic gifts was by granddaughters, Krista and Jina Couture. A special poem, "My First Christmas in Heaven," was read by family friend, Jeanne Howrigan. Family remembrances were written by Lindsey Lowell and read by Erin Biggie.
In attendance was representation from the Misfits Home Dem Group, Fairfield Elementary School, Champlain Collections, Franklin Elementary School, Franklin County Sheriff Department, Vermont State Police, Georgia Elementary School, Rubies in the Rough Red Hat Group, S.R. Smith Real Estate and Development Corporation, St. Anthony-St. George Parish, St. Patrick Parish, Preci Manufacturing and Grice Brook neighbors.
Casket bearers were Thomas Biggie, Thomas McManus, Nate Couture, Jordan Couture, Jason Lowell and Brent Butler.
Prayers of Committal and interment will be next spring in the Couture family lot in St. George's Cemetery in Bakersfield. Following the Mass a luncheon was held in the East Fairfield Fire Hall hosted by the St. Anthony-St. George Parish family. Father Laroche held the "Vigil for the Deceased" on Friday evening during visitation at the Heald Funeral Home in St. Albans.
DOREEN ELSIE NOWOTYNSKI
Funeral services for Doreen Elsie Nowotynski, who passed away on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, were held on Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at 3 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with Lyle Willey, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Richford, officiating.
Musical selections, “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” “In the Garden,” and “I Leave you Memories,” were by organist and vocalist, Mary Jo Gillilan. Special music, “Angel Band” and “Amazing Grace” were by Pastor Willey and his wife, Carol, and their son, Jared, who accompanied on the guitar. A poem, “Native American Indian” was read by son-in-law, John Berry. A poem, “The Watcher,” was read by granddaughter, Jauna Berry. Words of remembrance were shared by daughter Jane Berry, grandson Justin Berry, and granddaughter Jauna Berry.
In attendance was representation from Sheldon volunteer Fire Department and First Response, Department of Homeland Security, Bellows Free Academy staff and teachers, Northwest Technical Center, Bellows Free Academy Comet hockey team, St. Albans City Fire Department, Bayside Bait and Tackle, Our Lady of the Meadows, Franklin Lodge 4, F&AM, Haswell Lodge 39, F&AM, Order of Eastern Star, and Mount Sinai Temple 3 AAONMS.
Prayers of committal and interment will be later this spring in the Nowotynski family lot in Sheldon Village Cemetery.

DIANE A. LAROCQUE
ST. ALBANS / SALISBURY - Funeral services for Diane A. Larocque, who passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, were held Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Holsman, pastor of the Community Church of Hancock and Granville, officiating. The praying hands cross was placed on the casket by Diane’s husband, Marcel Larocque. Special music, the “Ave Maria” and “Precious Savior, Take My Hand” was selected for the service. Memories were shared by Diane’s son and daughter-in-law, Andre and Linda Larocque, and also by Connie Mahaney, Joyce Cameron, Marie Provencher, June Leach and Renee O’Farrell.
Forming an honor guard was the Ruby’s In The Rough Ladies Red Hat Society. Attending was a large delegation of teachers from Middlebury Union High School.
Also represented were delegates from Murphy’s Metal, Vermont Retired Teachers Association, BFA-St. Albans Class of 1962, UVM Class of 1968, former students, Food Science Corporation, Goodro Lumber Company, Franklin County Home Health Agency, Colonial Styling Center, Champlain Valley Christian Reform Church of Vergennes, St. Albans City Public Works Department and Depot Farm Supply.
Spring interment will be in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

LAURENT LAROCHE
ST. ALBANS - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Mr. Laurent E. Laroche, Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, in Holy Angels Church, with his brother, Father Leonidas Laroche, as the celebrant. Concelebrating with Father Laroche at the altar were The Most Reverend Bishop Salvatore Matano, Father Maurice Roy, Father Daniel Lakonga, Father W. Andre Houle, Father Bernard Bechard S.S.E., Father Jean Paul LaPlante, and Father John McDermott. Assisting Father Laroche at the alter were Russell Porwitzky, Norman Blouin and Fabio Choiniere, Readings from Sacred Scripture were presented by Sister Cecile Lebeau, and the Holy Gospel was read by Deacon Duane Langlois. Mary Jo Gillilan was the organist and soloist.
Laurent’s daughter Pauline Parent sung “Wind Beneath My Wings” in tribute to her father as the family arrived at church. Offertory Gifts were presented by Laurent’s niece, Maden Rainville, and granddaughter Estelle Laroche. Words of Remembrance were offered by his grandchildren, Carol Parent, Justin Lussier, and Mark Parent. Following the words of remembrance, Bishop Mattano read the prayers of Final Commendation, and led the “Salve Regina,” with the clergy, family and friends.
Delegations in attendance were parishioners from St. Patrick’s Church, St. Mary’s Church, and Holy Angels Church, the Laroche, Gagner, Howrigan, and Branon Farms, the United States Postal Service, Office Qtrs., Hannaford, and many family, friends, and neighbors. Interment followed in the Laroche family lot in St. Louis Cemetery in Highgate. Casket bearers were Laurent’s grandsons, Rosaire and Roger Laroche, Justin Lussier, Mark Parent, Andy Pelletier, and Peter Rainville. Monday evening, Father Leonidas Laroche and Father Maurice Roy conducted the Christian Wake Service with Laurent’s family and friends in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel.
Arrangements were entrusted to his neighbors at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home and Commemorative Services.
IRENE (CHASE) SCOTT
MONTGOMERY / ENOSBURG FALLS - Irene (Chase) Scott, age 96, widow of Carl “Joe” Scott, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born Aug. 25, 1911, in Lowell, the daughter of the late Harry and Ruby (Wescom) Chase.
Irene attended Montpelier Seminary and started teaching at the age of 19, teaching in the Montgomery school system for 42 years and was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma - Zeta Chapter. On June 21, 1935m she married Carl “Joe” Scott and resided on a farm on West Hill for many years where she would help Joe with sugaring and many other farm chores. They later started Eagle Lodge & Inn on Route 242 in Westfield. They operated this venture for 35 years. They also spent time in Ormand Beach, Fla. during the winter months.
She was a member of the Montgomery Methodist Church and in August of 1993, Irene and Joe were recognized as the only 50-year couple of the church. She was also a member of the Montgomery Historical Society. She was a former member of the former Tyler Branch Grange and in September of 1993, Irene and Joe were recognized by the National Grange for 50 years of Grange service.
Irene enjoyed quilting, crocheting and knitting. She was an avid reader and kept up with local and world news until the end.
She is survived by a son and his wife, Dean and Carmen Scott of Montgomery Center; two grandchildren and their spouses, Dean Matthew and Pamela Scott of Enosburg Falls, and Deanna Lynn and Christopher Jenness of Derby; a great-granddaughter, Bryn Alli Jenness of Derby; four step great-grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, and Mary Greenan and Michelle Billodeau; and two step great-great-grandchildren, Anthony and Riley Greenan; and many nieces and nephews and cousins, including a special nephew, John “Jack” Quinn, and special friends, Irene Lamarche and Janice Geraw. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Carl “Joe” Scott on Dec. 25, 1993. They were married June 21, 1935. Also, an infant daughter, Carlene Scott; brother, Glendon Chase; and step-brother, Carl White.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, at 11 at the Montgomery Methodist Church with Pastor Ed Sorrell officiating. Interment will take place this spring in the Montgomery Village Cemetery.

MARCEL J. LAROCHE
HIGHGATE CENTER - Marcel J. Laroche, 76, a lifelong resident of this community, died Saturday morning, Feb. 16, 2008, surrounded by his family, at his home following a courageous battle with ALS.
Born in Highgate, April 18, 1931, the son of the late Omer and Yvonne (Plante) Laroche, Marcel attended school in Highgate and the St. Edmunds Novitiate in Swanton. On Aug. 22, 1953, he married the former Cecile Martin, who survives him.
Marcel loved farming and from the time he was a young boy he worked on his father’s farm on the Tarte Road. On Nov. 1st of 1953, he and his new wife, Cecile, moved into their home on their own farm down the road, which they operated for 41 years. Marcel was also very active as a sugar maker and belonged to many different sugaring organizations, including the Vermont Sugar Makers Assn. He and Cecile participated every year since 1973 in the Vermont Maple Festival in St. Albans serving one year as Grand Marshalls and also worked for many years at the Maple booth in the Vermont Building at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass. He belonged, as well, to the Farm Bureau, and the NFO.
In later years, Marcel, along with Cecile, worked as drivers for Moore Motors in St. Albans, transporting cars to the dealership from all over the Northeast and Canada. Most recently, Marcel was associated with Claude Fortin and Mycogen Seed Company, assisting with seed analysis and distribution throughout the Northeast and holding annual field days on the sample plantings that were grown next to his Route 78 home.
A lifelong communicant of St. Louis Church in Highgate Center, Marcel belonged to the Holy Name Society, was a 50-year member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 297 in St. Albans.
In addition to his beloved wife, Cecile, who worked by his side for over 54 years, Marcel is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jocelyn (Josh) and Micheal Tedford of St. Albans; his son and daughter–in-law, Patrick and Kay Laroche of Swanton; seven siblings and their spouses, Armande and Pamphile Tremblay of St. Albans, Maurice Laroche of Swanton, Aline Bouchard of Franklin, Rita and Fabian Ferland of Georgia, Claire Menard of Sheldon, Denise and Roger Rainville of Swanton and Norman and Anita Laroche of Highgate Center; four grandchildren, Traves Laroche, Christian Laroche, Micheal Tedford Jr. and his wife, Cory, and Matt Tedford and his life partner, Jessica Hatterick; one great-granddaughter, Madison Tedford; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, including his very special friends and neighbors, Jeannine Fortin and her late husband, Roland.
In addition to his parents, Marcel was predeceased by a great-grandson, Micheal Tedford III in 2007; by a brother, George Laroche; and by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Juliette Laroche, Philip Bouchard, Claude Menard and Ida Laroche.
The Laroche family would like to extend their deep and heartfelt gratitude to Jamie Burfoot of Freedom Medical in St. Albans for the tremendous amount of professional and personal care, encouragement and guidance he gave them all during Marcel’s illness.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at 11 a.m. from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. Father Benedict C. Kiely will be the celebrant and homilist. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in the Laroche Family Lot in St. Louis Cemetery. Family and friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

ST. ALBANS - Larry H. Hunter, 63, a resident of St. Albans since 1995, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.

CARMEN J. CHABOT
ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Carmen J. Chabot, age 76, died peacefully at her home, Saturday evening, Feb. 16, 2008, in the loving care of her husband, Paul, her daughters, Suzanne and Diane, and her special caregiver, Kim Real. Carmen was born in St. Albans, March 18, 1931, daughter of the late Aime and Anita (Duquette) L’Ecuyer. She was a communicant of Holy Angels Church all of her life.
Carmen was a member of the former Holy Angels Mothers Club, active with the Ladies of St. Anne and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court St. Mary. She was a graduate of Holy Angels School and
Bellows Free Academy. For 28 years, Carmen was the payroll clerk at
Boise-Cascade (formerly Sheldon and Missisquoi Pulp and Paper Mill), until her retirement in 1990. Carmen was a part-time saleslady at Lorraine’s Women’s Apparel Shop, in St. Albans, retiring to become a full time homemaker in 2000.
Carmen married Paul Chabot, May 26, 1973. Besides her husband, Paul, she is survived by her five children, Diane and Joseph Larochelle of Valencia, Calif., Richard and Pam Seguin of Saver, Pa., Diane and Patrick McCormack of East Montpelier, Suzanne Chabot of St. Albans, Mark and Nancy Chabot of Charlottsville, Va.; five grandchildren, Matt Larochelle, Erin McCormack-Edwards, Nicole Larochelle, Kristin McCormack and Lee Seguin; a sister, Jackie and her husband, David Hill of St. Albans; three brothers and their wives, Roland and Helene L’Ecuyer of Essex Junction, Paul and Nancy L’Ecuyer of Essex Junction, Richard and Elke L’Ecuyer of Elk Grove, Calif.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard and Terry Chabot of Leesburg, Fla., Louis and Dawn Chabot of Scarborough, Maine, Martha and Joseph Auclair of Windsor, Conn.; an aunt, Simone Duquette of Essex Junction; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special nephew, Greg Chabot. Besides the special care she received from Kim and Kim’s family, she also received special attention from her neighbors, Steve and Valerie Brunelle. Besides her parents, Carmen was predeceased by her son, Steven Chabot, Oct. 29, 2001; and her aunt, Sister Jacqueline Duquette, Feb. 14, 2007.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Friends may call at the Brady& Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 4 to7 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will be next spring in the Chabot family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

HUGH C. FITZGERALD
COLCHESTER - Hugh C. Fitzgerald, 76, a lifelong resident of Colchester, died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington following a long illness.
Hugh was born in Burlington on Feb. 27, 1931, the son of Charles and Madlyn (Tatro) Fitzgerald. He was educated in Winooski, and was a graduate of Winooski High School, Class of 1950. On Aug. 30, 1958, Hugh was married at St. Stephen Catholic Church, to Barbara (McMahon) Fitzgerald and together raised six children.
Hugh worked for many years as a dairy farmer, and later was employed by General Electric, Cote Contractors, and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. He spent several years on the Colchester Selectboard and worked on many town committees.
He loved farming, enjoyed working outdoors and tinkering on his farm equipment. Hugh could fix just about anything.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Barbara, of 49 years; six children, Peter Fitzgerald and wife, Karen, Mark Fitzgerald and wife, Nancy, Theresa Fitzgerald and Gary Gilmond Sr., Matthew Fitzgerald and wife, Donna, Susan Fitzgerald, and Maggie Schroll and husband, Karl; grandchildren, Robert, Patrick, Ellen, Margaret, Mary, Chris, Matt, Bethany, Devin, and Katie. Hugh and Barbara’s eleventh grandchild is expected in April. He is also survived by his brother, James Fitzgerald and wife, Ruth; special nephews, Larry Decker and his wife, Donna, Howard Decker, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Hugh was predeceased by four sisters, Corrine Fitzgerald, Kathryn Decker, Mary McGregor, and Joan Gage; and a sister-in-law, Jean Fitzgerald.
Hugh's family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the many years of dedicated care provided by Dr. John Fitzgerald. We would also like to thank the FAHC staff involved in his care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church on Barlow Street in Winooski. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Colchester. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, Feb. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St. in Winooski.

ST. ALBANS - Funeral services for Richard G. “Ricky” Kennison, who passed away on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, were held on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at 1 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy, pastor of Holy Angels Catholic Church, officiating. Music selected for the service, “Amazing Grace,” “There is a Season,” “Turn, Turn, Turn” and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” were by guitarist and vocalist, Badaric Smith. Words of Remembrance were shared by David Laggis and Art Marchessault.
In attendance was representation from Northwestern Counseling and Support Services and the Berkshire House.
Prayers of Committal and interment will be held later this spring at the Hemingway family lot in the St. Albans Bay Cemetery.

SWANTON / ST. ALBANS - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Father Maurice Roy, pastor, and Father Bernard Bechard, S.S.E., pastor of St. Anthony’s Church in Sheldon Springs and St. Mary’s Church in Franklin, co-officiated. Altar servers were Normand Blouin and Donald Poirier. Lorraine’s grandchildren were the musicians for her Mass. The Soloist was granddaughter, Deni-Marie Comstock. The guitarist and trombone soloist was grandson, Christopher Comstock. They were accompanied by Joanne Scott on the piano-keyboard. Fond words of remembrance and a poem was shared by daughter-in-law, Suzanne Bedard.
Lorraine’s bearers were her sister-in-law, Di’Anne Bedard; cousin, Anne McSweeney, Shirley LaBombard, Pauline Gordon, Jeanne Tatro, Phyllis Alger Pigeon, Pauline Cross, Mary Wood, Rita Garland and Marilyn Letourneau.
Attending were representatives of Bedard Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Vermont House of Representatives, Franklin County Home health, MAHA U 12 Girls Hockey Team, Fairfield Center School, Hair Loft, former Franklin County Deputy Sheriff’s, Ray’s Extrusion Die Equipment, Nana’s Restaurant, Jeff’s Seafood Restaurant, Warner’s Snack Bar and Clothing Store, Rene’s Store of Milton, Bushey Paving, Chevalier Sprinkler Systems, Esden Florists of Fairfield, A. N. Deringer, Inc., and many neighbors and friends.
Following the Mass, a luncheon and time of sharing was held at Holy Angels Parish Center, hosted by the Ladies of St. Anne.
Interment will be next spring in the Bedard family lot in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Sheldon Springs.
Friday afternoon, Father Bechard held a Christian Wake Service with Lorraine’s family and friends in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
IRVING CHARLES AUSTIN
MORRISVILLE - Irving Charles Austin, age 96, passed away peacefully at Genesis Eldercare in Morrisville on July 1, 2006. Irving was born on May 10, 1910, in Georgia, Vt., son of the late Charles and Ruby (King) Austin. Irving was raised by his mother Ruby and his stepfather, Sidney Gordon. He had been employed as a farmer and also a truck driver. Irving will be greatly missed by those who had the true pleasure to have known him.
He is survived by one daughter, Shirley (Austin) Parah; his half sister, Janice Gordon; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his wife, Phyllis; a son, Sidney E. Austin; one daughter, Susan Austin; a brother, William Austin; a sister, Helene Moore; and a half brother, Raymond Gordon.
A graveside service was held this morning, Monday, July 3, 2006, at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s Cemetery with the Reverend Francis Connors officiating.
