Mr. Hickok was born Dec. 18, 1915 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the son of Julian and Margaret (Moore) Hickok. He took an early interest in natural science and maintained a lifelong interest in the workings of the natural world. As a teenager he became an Eagle Scout and later attended Weslyan University where he studied chemistry.
Mr. Hickok moved to Vermont in 1939 and worked on highway and bridge projects as a materials chemist. He later was employed at Union Carbide and Thompson Manufacturing in Bennington before becoming a pari-mutual supervisor at Green Mt. Racetrack in Pownal, where he was employed from the opening day until the racetrack closed.
Many feel Mr. Hickok's true calling was in helping his fellow man and improving the lot of people in need. "C.J." always helped people whenever he could and there are many in the community whom have benefited from his time and generosity. His persistent faith in the goodness of his fellow man allowed him to personify the highest attributes of human behavior.
Volunteering for Chester Hickok began with AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) in 1976 when he became the First Vice President of the Bennington AARP Chapter and then served two terms (four years) as Chapter President. He was appointed to the AARP State Legislative Committee, became Secretary and then was appointed Assistant State Director, in charge of public relations. As Public Relations Media Specialist he produced a quarterly newsletter "Green Mountain AARP News" and started a cable television series which was cast to 16 cable access centers in Vermont, boasting a potential viewership of nearly 135, 000. This project was made possible due to Mr. Hickok's election to the first Board of Directors of Catamount Access Television Corp. in Bennington, which became operational on Oct. 15, 1993. Mr. Hickok was appointed AARP Communications Specialist and served until September 1997 when he resigned to continue his cable television series as "Green Mountain Mature News."
At the time of his death, Mr. Hickok was serving as Public Relations Officer for the Bennington AARP Chapter, which holds their annual AARP Fest and Craft Fair the last weekend in September. Mr. and Mrs. Hickok were most proud of co-founding The Vermont Miracle Workers, which is a consortium of organizations in the state devoted to encouraging Vermonters to consider organ and tissue donation. The Vermont Miracle Workers were responsible for the organ donor form on Vermont operator's licenses, a program started in 1990. Since 1987, the Hickoks have organized the presentation of a plaque by the Governor during Vermont Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Week honoring the Vermont Miracle of the Year. This was received by the family of Baby Emma Tifft in Bennington in April of 1998.
"C.J." always insisted on recycling and made certain to get every bit of value out of everything he touched. His motto was "use it up, fix it, then wear it out."
In addition to his wife Elizabeth (Stuart) Hickok of Bennington, Mr. Hickok is survived by three sons, Robert C. Hickok of Bennington, William P. Hickok of Burlington and Barry W.
