JOSE ROCHA NUNES

ISLE LA MOTTE ­ Jose Rocha Nunes, 76, a resident of the Isle La Motte Community for the past nine years died Saturday, July 21, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Mr. Nunes was born in Azores, Portugal on Feb. 28, 1925, the son of the late Francisco and Fermina (Rocha) Nunes. He attended school in Portugal and on May 26, 1960 was married to the former Clara DaRocha who survives him. He was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Mission in Isle La Motte.

In addition to his wife Clara of Isle La Motte he leaves his daughter, Clara Nunes of Isle La Motte, two sons, Johenry Nunes of Isle La Motte and Cisco Nunes of Ontario, Calif.; four grandchildren, Daniela, Alicia, Herbie and Jordan; three brothers, Henry Nunes of Azores, Portugal, and Manuel and Tony Nunes, both of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; two sisters, Edna Fagundes of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Olivia Cardoza of Chino, Calif., as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 26, 2001, at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph's Mission, Main Street, Isle La Motte. The pastor, Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Nunes family lot in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Wednesday evening, July 25, 2001 from 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Mr. Nunes' memory may be made in the form of masses.

PHYLLIS J. "MA" (GORDON) PIDGEON

CAMBRIDGE -- Phyllis Jane "Ma" (Gordon) Pidgeon, age 65, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, July 22, 2001 at Fairview Commons Rehabilitation Center in Great Barrington, Mass. She was born Jan. 28, 1936 in Burlington, Vt., daughter of the late Joseph L. and Aline (Martell) Gordon. She married Reginald L. Pidgeon, Sr. on Nov. 15, 1952 in St. Ann Church in Milton, Vt. He predeceased her on April 1, 1990. Devoting over twenty years as a Pub Owner, "Ma" was well-known in the area as the proprietor of Pidgies Pub in Cambridge since October of 1984 where she treated all of her loyal patrons like family. She gave back often to her community she loved so much as a respected, frequent but silent financial provider to many local area churches and other worthy charitable causes over the years. She always looked forward to the many Bingo games played at the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington. Most of all she loved her family and all of the children, always finding time to be an understanding mother to everyone that needed that special attention in their lives only a true heart warming "Ma" could offer. Her loss is great and will be a tremendous void in the hearts of the many that had the privilege to know and love her.

She is survived by her loving family, two sons, Dale Pidgeon and his wife Laurie of Fairfax, Reggie Pidgeon, Jr. of Milton; three daughters, Darlene Bushway and her husband John of Jeffersonville, Susan Demo and her husband Raymond, Sr. of Milton, and Sharon Howard and her husband Chris, Sr. of Fairfax; three brothers, Leland Gordon and his wife Pauline of Jeffersonville, Clifton Gordon and his wife Joyce of Milton, and Robert Gordon and his wife Jerilyn of Milton; three sisters, Shirley Reynolds of Milton, Gloria Lafountain of Essex Jct., and Arlene Lauzier and her husband Roger of Milton; 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and her favorite bird "Garth."

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, July 25, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hayes-Rich Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 26, 2001, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann Church, Milton with Reverend Ronald A. Soutiere and Reverend Francis R. Prive, Co-Celebrants. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Ann Cemetery, Milton. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main Street, Fairfax.

JOHN H. IRISH

EAST FAIRFIELD -- Mr. John H. Irish, age 75, was pronouned dead Saturday afternoon, July 21, 2001, upon arrival at the Northwestern Medical Center. John was born in Fletcher Sept. 2, 1925, son of the late Donald and Julia (Tierney) Irish. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and was a member of the Enosburg American Legion Post #42, Robert Glidden Post #758 of the V.F.W., and was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church. He was a dairy farmer most of his working life.

Sept. 22, 1946 he married Virginia Miller, who died June 29, 1990. He is survived by seven children and their spouses, Judy and Louis Leberge of Charlotte, John and Donna Irish, Jr. of Sante, Calif., Bill Irish and his companion Penny Nye of Sheldon, Kathy Marshia and her companion Ken Forbes of Montgomery Center, Dottie and Donald Menard of Sheldon, Tim and Rhoda Irish of Swanton, Joan and Gary Gosselin of St. Albans; 24 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, sisters, Barbara Paquette of Williston, Betty Longway of Essex Jct., Janice Stevens of Tennessee, several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife and parents, John was predeceased by his sister, Patricia Fleury and three brothers, Ronald, Bertrand and Donald Irish, Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans from 6 to 9 p .m. Tuesday evening. Interment will be in the Irish family lot in St. George's Cemetery in Bakersfield. Memorial may be made to the Vermont Lung Association, 30 Farrell St., So. Burlington, VT 05403. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

LEO F. KIRK

SO. HERO/BURLINGTON -- Leo F. Kirk, age 73, died Sunday morning, July 22, 2001, with his loving family at his home in South Hero following an illness extending over 18 months. Leo was born in St. Albans Sept. 25, 1927, son of the late Frank & Irene (Terrien) Kirk. Following graduation from high school Leo served in the United States Army in Italy during WWII. After discharge in 1948 he went to a camera repair school and was employed by the McKenzie Packing Company for over 20 years. He co-owned and operated the Willard Street Market from 1962 until 1965, then opened Uncle Leo's Variety in Shelburne. He was a member of the Elks (BPOE) Lodge #916 for many years. Leo was a craftsman with wood and enjoyed making wooden toys for children. He was also an ardent gardener. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather. Jan. 13, 1951 Leo married Marion Rubeor. Their devotion to each other was publicly known, especially during the past year and a half, during his illness. Leo and Marion have spent the last several winters in Lake Wales, Fla.

Besides his loving wife of over 50 years he is survived by six children and their spouses, Donna and Lynn Little of Charlotte, Gary Kirk of Chesapeake, Va., David Kirk of Flagstaff, Ariz., Marvin and Darlene Kirk of Richmond, William and Debbie Kirk of Milton, Tary and Michelle Kirk of Burlington; 15 grandchildren, two great grandsons, a brother, Elmer and his wife Aline Kirk of Venice, Fla., a sister, Elda DiLorenzo of Williston, several cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by two sons, John in 1975 and James in 1996.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Catherine of Sienna Church, Shelburne. Friends may call at the Corbin & Palmer Funeral Home, 71 South Union St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in the Kirk family lot in Shelburne Village Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Champlain Valley, 25 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

PATIENCE DODMAN LADD

NORTH HERO ­ Patience Dodman Ladd, 85, a resident of North Hero for the past sixteen years and a former resident of Blandford, Mass., died early Saturday morning, July 14, 2001, at the home she started with her son and daughter-in-law, David and Summer Ladd on Lakeview Drive in North Hero.

She was born in Attleborough, Norfolk, England Dec. 8, 1915, the daughter of the late John Edward and Ella May (Perry) Dodman. She attended schools in England and on Dec. 8, 1947, married Lawrence Arthur Ladd, who predeceased her May 7, 1979.

Mrs. Ladd served her native country in the Royal Artillery of the British Army during WWII. She was stationed in London, England during the Battle of Britain. After the war, she immigrated to the United States where she became a naturalized citizen. While living in Massachusetts, she was a member of Golden Chapter #5, Order of the Eastern Star in Westfield, and was a recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Americanism Award, also in Westfield. Since living in North Hero she attended the North Hero United Methodist Church and volunteered at the North Hero Public Library.

She is survived by her son, David Ladd and his wife Summer of North Hero, her daughter, Linea Marketos and her husband Raymond of Derry, N.H., a very special stepdaughter, Jane Betti and her husband James of North Adams, Mass. Also surviving is a brother, David Dodman of Yorkshire, England, and three sisters, Ann Turner of Perranporth, Cornwall, England, Betty Holden of Glenwater, Ontario, Canada, and Alyson Stade of Keowna, British Columbia, Canada; her grandchildren, Laura Lovell of East Haddam, Conn., Miriam Parrott of Wakefield, R.I., Aaron Marketos of Enfield, Conn., Reuben Marketos of Springfield, Mass., Stephen Batti of Pittsfield, Mass., Mary Jane Betti of North Adams, Mass., and Robert Batti of Lanesboro, Mass.; a great grandson, Christopher Parrott of Wakefield, R.I., as well as several other great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A stepson, Robert R. Ladd, brothers Reuben, Jack and Teddy Dodman, and sisters, Nell Betts and Sylvia Bates predeceased Mrs. Ladd.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 28, 2001, at 2 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Reverend Elizabeth Griffin, pastor of the St. Albans Bay Methodist Church will officiate. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral. Interment will take place later in the family plot in Pine Hill Cemetery in Westfield, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Champlain Valley, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446.

BETTYLOU M. BRASSARD

THERESA, N.Y. -- Bettylou M. Brassard, 59, expired Thursday afternoon at Samaritan Medical Center where she had been a patient. She had been ill with respiratory problems.

Born Jan. 10, 1942 in Sheldon, Vt., daughter of the late John B. and Pearl B. Ducharme Desrosier. Graduated from high school in Swanton, Vt. Married Jules J. Brassard June 4, 1960 at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton, Vt. Mr. and Mrs. Brassard lived in the Theresa-Redwood area for most of their married life. Mr. Brassard died Sept. 1, 1999. Mrs. Brassard served as lector at both St. Francis Xavier Church in Redwood, N.Y. and at St. Theresa Avilia Church in Theresa, N.Y.

Survivors include two sisters, Jessie Lagrow and Marion Young, both of Vermont; two brothers, Gene Desrosier and Carmie Dow, both of Vermont, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a sister, Pearl Monette and a brother, Edmund Desrosier.

There will be no calling hours. After cremation burial will be on the family plot in Paroisse De St. Philippe D'Argenteuil Cemetery in the town of Chatham, Quebec. There will be a memorial service at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Swanton, Vt. at a later date.

Donations may be made to St. Francis Xavier Church, Redwood, N.Y., St. Theresa of Avila Church, Theresa, N.Y., Walker Cancer Foundation, Washington Street, Watertown, N.Y.

PAUL EMILE BOUCHARD

SHELDON -- Paul Emile Bouchard, 75, a long time resident of Sheldon, died suddenly late Tuesday evening, July 17, 2001, at his home.

Paul was born in Franklin, Vt. on Feb. 18, 1926, the son of the late Henri and Nellie (Monfette) Bouchard. He attended schools in Franklin. On May 22, 1947, he married Cecile Rainville, who survives him.

Since 1948 Paul owned and operated a dairy farm in Sheldon. After retiring in 1988, he continued to work on the farm part time.

As an active member of the Sheldon community, he served on many boards and commissions including the Town Selectboard, Lister and Auditor, Board of Civil Authority, Regional Planning Commission, Civil Defense Board, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment and served as Justice of the Peace. For his dedicated service, Paul was awarded the Vermont Public Service Award in 1999 by Governor Howard Dean. Also, he was a thirty-six year member of the Sheldon Grange, thirty-three year member of the National Farmers Organization and worked for ASCS appraising crops. He was very active in the Vermont Democratic Committee, serving as local chairman for several years. Paul was a member of St. Anthony's Church in Sheldon Springs. He served for fifty-three years as a faithful and active member of the Knights of Columbus, Saint Albans Council 297, obtaining his Fourth Degree in 1961. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling with his wife, and gardening.

In addition to his wife Cecile, Paul leaves his children and their spouses; Gerald & Michaeleen Bouchard, Marcel & Laura Bouchard, Annette & Thomas Valley, Daniel & Elizabeth Bouchard, Norman & Stephanie Bouchard, Lucien & Wanda Bouchard, Pierre & Diane Bouchard and Emilie Bouchard. He leaves his grandchildren; Vanessa Valley and Melissa, Michael, Matthew, Kaitlyn, Adam, Jeremiah, Amanda, Jessica, Taytum, Haley and Justin Bouchard.

He also leaves four sisters; Mrs. Marie Paule Roy, Mrs. Teresa Pierce, Mrs. Madeleine Rainville and Mrs. Rita Grenier. He was predeceased by a son Gerard, granddaughter Joanna Valley, a sister Marguerite and a brother Philip.

A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, July 23, 2001, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Father Marcel Rainville, SSE from the Office of Campus Ministry at Saint Michael's College will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Bouchard family lot in Saint Anthony's Cemetery in Sheldon Springs. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Sunday, July 22, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Paul's memory may be made to Enosburg Rescue, Enosburg Falls, Vermont 05450, Sheldon First Response, Sheldon, Vermont 05483 or to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, 434 Hurricane Lane, Williston, Vermont 05495.

CHARLOTTE CLARK MILLER

VERGENNES/ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Charlotte Clark Miller, age 84, died Wednesday evening, July 18, 2001 in Verdelle Village, E.C.F. where she had resided since 1996. She was born in Vergennes July 14, 1917, daughter of the late Goodsil and Rhoda (Sears) Clark. She and her husband, Glannis Miller, resided in Schenectady, N.Y. for several years. After Glannis died, she returned to Vermont and lived in Shelburne. She was employed in the dietary department of the Fanny Allen Hospital. In 1988 she became a resident of The Brownway Home in Enosburg Falls and moved to Verdelle in 1996.

Charlotte is survived by several nieces and nephews, including her care givers Robert and his wife Barbara Clark of St. Albans. Besides her husband she was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters Alice (Hamel) Laflam, Marion Little, Cecil Clark, Dorothy Moorby, Alfred Clark, Stanley Clark and two siblings in infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, St. Albans. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 10 a.m. until the mass time Saturday morning. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Clark family lot in Prospect Cemetery (Route 22a) in Vergennes. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

ORESTE "PAT" ROMANO ROSA

PALM HARBOR, FLA./RICHFORD, VT. -- Oreste "Pat" Romano Rosa, 87, died July 13, 2001 in Palm Harbor, Florida. He was born August 20, 1913, in South Ryegate, Vt., the son of Giovanni and Fiorina Rosa.

He graduated from Woodsville, N.H. high school and the University of Vermont, class of 1937.

Mr. Rosa was married to Audley Carbee in Newbury, Vt. Oct. 10, 1941. They have a daughter, Rebecca Rosa.

He was Assistant Principal in Hyde Park, Vt.; served in the Pacific Theatre - U. S. Army - CIC, from April 1943 to February, 1946. Mr. Rosa returned to Immigration and Naturalization Service and retired to Palm Harbor, Florida after 35 years of service. They returned each summer to Vermont.

While living in Richford, Vt., he served as chairperson of the school board and King Lion of the Richford Club. He was an ardent Red Sox fan, an enthusiastic golfer (two hole in ones), very faithful to his bowling teams, and served as Chaplain of the Highland Lakes Men's Club for ten years.

He was truly a gentle man, who loved his family, enjoyed his friends and always welcomed an opportunity to offer hospitality. Mr. Rosa was predeceased by six brothers and sisters: Angelo, Alfredo, Irene Demeritt, Margaret Gotteli, Norma Rosa, and Columbia Clifford.

There will be no calling hours or service, burial will be in the Rosa family plot in South Ryegate, Vt.
