LOIS (YOUNG) O'REILLY
RICHFORD -- Lois (Young) O'Reilly, age 78, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2001, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston following a long illness.
She was born in Richford, Sept. 28, 1922, the daughter of the late Ulric & Eva (Casavant) Young.
Lois raised her family and lived her life in Richford and was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Richford. She was devoted to her family, church and many friends. She married Peter L. O'Reilly, April 7, 1945, in All Saints Catholic Church. They had been married 37 years when he predeceased her in 1983.
She leaves four children, Sheila Benoit and her husband Philip of Killingworth, Conn., Catherine O'Reilly of Quincy, Mass., Terry O'Reilly and his wife Lise of Herndon, Va., and Tim O'Reilly and his wife Tracy of So. Burlington; ten grandchildren, Mandy Miranda, Aimee & Jared Benoit of Killingworth, Conn., Maureen Lingle of New Wales, Pa., Ryan Feldman of Quincy, Mass., Patrick, Sarah & Mary Beth O'Reilly of Herndon, Va., Monica & Joseph O'Reilly of So. Burlington; two great grandchildren; her sister, Yvonne (Young) Brown of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla., sister-in-law, Ethel Young of Leominster, Mass., many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband she was predeceased by a grandson, Sean Benoit; a sister, Mary Esther Lawyer; three brothers, Ronald, Cedric & Everett Young.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church with Rev. Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be held at a later date in All Saints Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.

LILA L. REYNOLDS
SHELDON -- Lila L. Reynolds, 89, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away Wednesday morning, June 13, 2001 at the Northwestern medical Center following a brief illness. Her family was at her side.
She was born in Orange Heights, Vt. May 31, 1912, the daughter of the late Charles and Grace (Godfrey) Lamphere. She was the widow of Leo O. Reynolds who died January 24, 1996. They were married in April of 1937.
Mrs. Reynolds enjoyed her family, knitting, crocheting and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include her children, Henry H. and his wife, Jo Anne Reynolds of Sheldon, Wayne O. Reynolds of Fairfield, and Barbara Trombley of Sheldon. She also leaves a sister, Katherine Symonds and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in the family lot in Sheldon Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, VT 05478. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.
JANICE A. PICARD
ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Janice A. Picard, age 63, died Thursday morning, June 14, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Becky following an extended illness, with her loving family at her side.
She was born in Portsmouth, N.H., Jan. 1, 1938, daughter of the late Robert P. and Ruth (Hutchins) Levesque. She was employed in the dietary department of Kerbs Memorial Hospital and was assistant steward at the Champlain Country Club. She was a member of the Northside Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #1.
April 1, 1955 she married Vernard R. Picard. Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Vance R. Picard, Victor and his wife Mindy Picard of St. Albans, Timothy and his wife Brenda Picard of Atlanta, Ga., six daughters and their spouses, Rebecca and Chris Bean, Susan and Tony Dutkiewicz, Vera and Carlo Corbeil, all of St. Albans, Pamela J. Picard of Bartow, Fla., Linda and Steve Longley of Highgate, Debbie and Gary Reynolds of Ft. Worth, Texas; 28 grandchildren, three great grandchildren, four sisters, Virginia Morin and Beverly Fury of Portsmouth, N.H., Barbara Barron of North Carolina, Patricia Emery of New York, five brothers, Robert Levesque of Florida, Ramon Levesque, Richard Levesque, Donald Levesque, Barrie Levesque, all of Portsmouth, N.H., several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Interment will be in the Picard family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
FREDA E. CASSAVOY
SWANTON -- A burial services was conducted for Freda E. Cassavoy on Thursday, June 7, 2001, in Swanton.
Freda, 91, died on Dec. 12, 2000 in West Springfield, Mass. Freda was a lifelong Swanton resident and was returned to be buried alongside her parents, William and Ruth (Tabor) Cassavoy and her brother, Valmore Cassavoy in the family lot at the Riverside Cemetery.
Freda was predeceased by her brothers, Howard "Buster" and Valmore Cassavoy, and a sister, Ruth (Cassavoy) Bernier. The graveside service was conducted by lay minister Madonna Vernal, a long time friend and former co-worker. Freda was a retiree from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Freda lived for many years on Church Street and was very involved in the community. She always took great pleasure in gardening and caring for her cats. The burial service was attended by nieces and nephews, cousins from Massachusetts and Vermont, former INS co-workers, long time neighbors and many close friends.
RUTH L. AUSTIN
MILFORD, CONN. -- Mrs. Ruth L. Austin, 75, of Dronoque Rd., Milford, Conn., died Sunday, June 10, 2001 in Milford Hospital.
She was born in Sheldon, Vt. on Dec. 8, 1925, the daughter of the late Clarence and Lucy Draper Mashia. Mrs. Austin was a longtime resident of Milford, Conn.
Mrs. Austin is survived by three sons, Ronald D. Austin and his wife Jean of Milford, Gary P. Austin and his wife Susan of Titusville, Fla., and James B. Austin and his wife Beth of Milford; a daughter, Judith L. Rice and her husband Stanley of Milford; a sister, Katherine Elwood of Oakville, Conn.; ten grandchildren, Laurie Austin, Michael Austin, Danielle Austin, Gary Austin, Connie Mosier, Steve Buskey, Scott Rice, Jessica Austin, Jim Austin, Sean Austin; seven great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, Hugh Mashia and Raymond Mashia, a granddaughter, Karen Austin, and her former husband, Byron H. Austin.
A service will take place Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the First United Church of Christ Congregational in Milford. Committal will take place at a later time in Vermont.
Arrangements are in care of the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad Street on the Green, Milford. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 5 Brookside Drive, Wallingford, CT 06492.
JOSEPH WALTER MITCHELL
GEORGIA -- Joseph Walter Mitchell, age 90, passed away Sunday morning, June 10, 2001, at his daughter's home on the Georgia Shore surrounded by his loving wife, daughter and son.
He was born in Chicopee, Mass. on Sept. 3, 1910, son of the late Daniel Louis and Anna (Grow) Mitchell. He married the former Myrtie Patterson in August of 1938 in Burlington, Vt. who predeceased him on June 19, 1971. He married the former Maxine Lee in St. Albans, Vt. on Oct. 31, 1981. Joseph and Maxine had been living in Springfield, Vt. and enjoying their winters in Florida until Joseph's recent illness.
Joseph was a retired self-employed mechanic specializing in diesel engines. He had served his country well as a Corporal in the United States Army where he served with Battery D in the 7th and 25th Field Artillery in the 1st Mechanized Unit at Forth Ethan Allen in Colchester. He was also a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge #679 in Springfield, Vt. He will be greatly missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his loving wife Maxine (Lee) Mitchell of Hinsdale, N.H., a son Daniel Louis Mitchell and his wife Bonnie of St. Albans, Vt., a daughter Myrtie Ruth Dickey and her husband Reverend Richard Dickey of Georgia, Vt.; one sister Pearl Plouffe of Chicopee, Mass.; five grandchildren, Richard, David, Christine, Christopher and Kelly; two great grandchildren, David Jay and Iyad; many nieces, nephews and cousins and a very special and close friend, "Fuzz" of Michigan. He was also predeceased by a son, Jay W. Mitchell in 1996, a brother, Earl Mitchell, a step-brother, Charlie and a step-sister, Bunny.
At Joseph's request there will be no visiting hours or memorial service. Inurnment and a graveside committal service will be held in Ascutney Cemetery in Weathersfield, Vt. on Monday, June 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Joseph's memory to the American Heart Association, Vermont Affiliate, Inc., 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701. Arrangements are by The Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main Street, Fairfax.
JANICE SKEELS NEWTON
GEORGIA -- Janice Skeels Newton, 77, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2001, with her family at her side. She was born in Swanton, Vt., Feb. 27, 1924 the daughter of the late Herbert and Lulia (Corliss) Skeels.
Janice graduated from the Swanton High school and Becker college in Worcester, Mass. After working for the Central Vermont Railway offices for a short time, she taught at Enosburg Falls High School for two years. On June 27, 1946 she married Robert H. Newton and moved to Pleasant Hill Farm in Georgia where she devoted her life to her family and home. She was an active member of the Georgia United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women serving on numerous boards and committees. She was also a member of the Franklin County Extension Service Board and Farm Bureau.
In addition to her husband, Robert, Janice is survived by two daughters and sons- in-law, Linda and Roger DuHamel of Fremont, N.H., Lana and Fred Heinzmann of Oberried, Germany, a son and daughter-in-law, Park and Nancy Newton of Georgia, eleven grandchildren; Deanna and her husband Bryce Waldrop, and Melanie DuHamel all currently residing in Maryland, Cara and Tina Heinzmann of Oberried, Germany, and Chad, Tansy, Dylan, Brant, Angus, Ethan and Johnathon Newton all of Georgia. She also leaves four sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law; Dora Belle and Sylvia Skeels, Rebecca Ballard, Esther and Stuart Newton and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Claude and Donald Skeels, a sister-in-law, Betty Paterson and brothers-in-law, Jim Paterson and Alden Ballard.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 at 11 a.m. in the Georgia United Methodist Church with The Reverend Kelly Warner officiating. Interment will follow in the Georgia Plain Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider The Expansion Fund of the Georgia United Methodist Church, c/o Lori Bondesen, 167 Sunset Circle, Milton, VT 05468. Visitation will be on Monday, June 25, 2001, from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.
DORIS TOWLE RILEY
FRANKLIN -- Mrs. Doris Towle Riley, 92, a lifelong resident of the Franklin community, died early Sunday morning, June 10, 2001, in the Newport Health Center.
She was born in Franklin July 7, 1907, the daughter of the late Harlow and Julia (Colcord) Towle. She graduated from Franklin High School and on Aug. 4, 1926, married Oscar Riley who predeceased her on Sept. 28, 1970.
Mrs. Riley was a lifelong parishioner of the Franklin United Church and a member of the Franklin United Women. She was also a former member of the Mother's Club, Franklin Home Dem Group and the Vermont Retail Grocers Association.
She leaves two daughters, Shirley Machia of East Highgate, and Marilyn Riley of Franklin; a sister Mrs. Rupert (Wilma) Lampman, also of Franklin. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Sally Kees and her husband Ed of Amelia Island, Fla., Steven Machia and his fiancee Diane Burnelle of Franklin, John Machia and his wife Jamie of Highgate and David Machia and his wife Anne Marie of Colchester; seven great grandchildren, Jason and Charles Kees and Laura, Andrea, Tiffany, Lindsey and Katie Machia; a very dear friend, Elizabeth Scott of Scotland and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 14, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Franklin United Church, Main St., Franklin Village. The Reverend Michael Long, Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow in the family lot in the Franklin Village Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Wednesday, June 13, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. Gifts in Mrs. Riley's memory may be made to Franklin Rescue, Franklin, VT 05457, or to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, VT 05478.
The family of Mrs. Riley wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Sue Richard, Mary Ann West and to the staff of the Newport Health Center for all the love, care and concern for Mrs. Riley during her illness.
DOROTHY L. BYERS
ESSEX JUNCTION -- Dorothy L. Byers, 70, of Whitcomb Woods, died Sunday morning, June 10, 2001, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston.
Dorothy was born April 20, 1931 in Montreal, P.Q., the daughter of Edmund and Lillian Anderson Hagberg. She was married on Sept. 24, 1955 to John Byers in North Adams, Mass. Dorothy was a nurse for many years prior to having her family, after which time she devoted herself to raising her children as a full time mother.
She loved gardening and her flowers and also enjoyed reading and spending time with the family. Mrs. Byers was involved in the foster grandparent programs at H.O. Wheeler School in Burlington, as well as with the Winooski School system and the Vermont Department of Corrections and Parole. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Jo-Ann Byers of Jericho, David Byers and his wife Debbie of Fairfax, and Judy Spittle and her husband Joe of Duxbury; her three grandchildren, Ben, Ryan and Haley of Dusbury, and her former husband, John Byers of Essex Jct.
There will be no funeral service, however a reception in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2001, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the home of her daughter Judy, located at 176 Morse Road in Waterbury. All friends are invited.
