MARGARET C. KIMBALL
SHELDON CREEK - I have decided to write my own obituary. I am now 81 years old and still in rational mind so I think the time has come to take care of this detail.

I was born Sept. 12, 1925, the daughter of Robert and Alice (Stephenson) Crowe. I was fortunate to have these two good people as parents. They shaped my values and started me out on the path of human life.

I had two brothers and two sisters, Gwendolyn, Robert, John, and Cora. At this writing, only John, Cora and I are still living.

As children of the Depression, I suppose that we were poor but we were not aware of it at the time. We never felt deprived, but frugality was always held up to us as a virtue and wastefulness was considered a cardinal sin. These beliefs were firmly impressed upon our minds early in life and have served us well throughout the years.

On June 1, 1947, I married my soul mate, Norman Kimball, who put up with all my frailties and failures for nearly 57 years. Norman and I had five wonderful children, Carolyn, Tommy, Diane, Norma, and Melinda. They have given us five grandchildren, Arica and Caleb Bronz, Sarah Godin Biggie, and Ellen and Rachel Repstad. We now have five great-grandchildren, Arrien and Eva Gadue, Silas and Finnian Biggie, and Linden Rose Bronz Russo.

Tommy died in 1988 ñ an untimely death. We thought we could never recover from that tragedy, but as we worked together through our grief, we became a closer, more tightly woven family than ever before.

There was one other member of our family. Margaret Hanson came to live with us in 1975. Margaret had spent most of her childhood at the Brandon Training School and was transferred to the Vermont State Hospital when she was 18 years old. She had a strong spirit and her influence extended to our children and grandchildren as well as ourselves. We came to love Margaret as one of our own and our relationship gave us a new understanding and respect for those who are referred to as handicapped. Margaret lived with us for almost 24 years until she died in 1998.

Norman died in 2004 and since then I have been alone, although not really alone because I have strong family support. I have spent more time in solitude since then than at any time in my life. Solitude doesn't mean loneliness and I have never been lonely. My time in solitude has given me the opportunity to reflect on the incidents of my life, the mistakes and omissions which I sorely regret, the satisfaction I feel when I believe I followed the right course of action, the grief and the joy, the struggles and the periods of serenity, but above all, the love. There is a song on a recent CD entitled ìLove is the Last Thing to Goî. I don't know anything about the song, but I really identify with that title.

I'm thankful for my family; I'm thankful for all the people I have known in this journey through human life. I'm thankful for the teachers, poets, and authors, living and long dead, who have inspired me and influenced my beliefs. It has been a good trip!

Margaret Crowe Kimball died early Friday morning, Oct. 27, 2006, at her home with her family at her side. Besides her children and grandchildren, she leaves their partners: Phil Bronz, Tom Repstad, John Thoren, and Cory Woolsey; Sam Russo, Brad Biggie, Erina Luciano, Jeff Spencer, and Meg Barnett; her daughter-in-law Roxanne Pike; her sister Cora Clark and her brother John Crowe; her friends and her church community; honorary sister, Joann Morris; and dear friends, Dorothy and Clarence Bocash and Tammy Conger.

She opened her generous heart to all who crossed her path, caring for strangers and family alike. Her spirit of unconditional love and giving is an inspiration to all of us.

There will be no visiting hours. The service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2006, at 1 p.m. in the Sheldon United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sheldon Food Shelf, c/o Thelma Stebbins, 3133 E. Sheldon Road, Sheldon, Vt. 05483.

The Heald Funeral Home is assisting Margaret's family with arrangements.
