LAZARRETTE G. COMBS

BENNINGTON/MILTON -- Lazarrette G. Combs, 76, formerly of Milton, died Sunday, June 17, 2001 at the Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bennington following a long illness.

Lazarrette was born on April 3, 1925 in East Berkshire, the daughter of Alfred and Evelyn Gagnon.

Mrs. Combs was a longtime resident of Manley Road in Milton.

She was predeceased by her husband, Chesley in 1993. She is survived by her son Ralph Combs and his wife Cammie of Arlington, Vt., by her two grandchildren, one great grandchild, and by several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 20 at 12:30 p.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton with burial following in St. Luke's Cemetery in Fairfax.

Memorials in Lazarrette's memory may be made to the Vermont Kidney Assoc., PO Box 244, Burlington, VT 05402.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday morning, June 20, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Minor Funeral Home, with a wake service at 11 a.m.

HOWARD W. JARVIS

ISLE LA MOTTE -- Howard W. Jarvis, 66, a lifelong resident of this community, died Saturday evening, June 16, 2001, in the Verdelle Village Extended Care Facility in St. Albans Town.

Howard was born in Burlington on Nov. 1, 1934, the son of the late Frank and Ina (La Bombard) Jarvis. Howard lived most of his entire life in Isle La Motte and graduated from Alburg High School. Howard was employed as a farmer and mechanic in his early working career. He also worked as a carpenter and painter in the local community for many years. Howard had a great love for the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting and enjoyed hanging out with his many friends.

Howard leaves two brothers, Clinton and his wife Vivian of Tucson, Ariz., and Gerald and his wife Rita of Milton. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Prayers services will be held Thursday, June 21, 2001 at 8 p.m. from Kidder Memorial Home. Family and friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Thursday, June 21, 2001, from 7 to 9 p.m. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Isle La Motte. Gifts in Howard's memory may be made to Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in care of Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, Isle La Motte, VT 05463.

MAURICE JOSEPH TARTE

SO. BURLINGTON -- Maurice (Moe) Joseph Tarte, 50, of South Burlington, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 17, 2001 at his home.

He was born Feb. 20, 1951 in Burlington, the son of Fortunat and Mary Goulette Tarte. He loved Lake Champlain and greatly enjoyed nature. An avid outdoorsman, he liked to fish and hunt. He also was an "Ace" Jack of all Trades.

Moe was married on July 4 to his loving wife of 23 years, Sherlene Ulihrach. He had recently found God and was planning to become a born again Christian. He found peace and fullfillment in reading God's teachings. He loved God and the peace he found with him.

He is survived by his loving wife Sherlene; his daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Nicole) Albright of Ohio and two grandchildren, Brandy and Drew Albright; four sisters, Mrs. Robert (Janet) Cook of New Jersey, Mrs. Dorothy Jensen of So. Burlington, Mrs. Peter (Lorraine) Turner of Highgate, Mrs. Richard (Pauline) Greenough of Essex Jct.; one brother, Roger Tarte and his wife Muriel of Waleska, Ga., and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

There will be no visiting hours. A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 21, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Rt. 7 in Milton.

Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven.

GUY C. BURNS

MILTON -- Guy C. Burns, 84, died at his home Friday morning, June 15, 2001, surrounded by his loving family.

Guy was born in Belvidere, Vt. on Aug. 22, 1916, the son of the late Clayton and Elizabeth (Corrigan) Burns. He married the former Mary Legacy on June 16, 1944 in Jeffersonville. Guy and Mary would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary today.

Mr. Burns was employed at the old asbestos mines in Lowell, and for the Boyden Farm in Cambridge. He eventually moved to Milton where he worked on the Harold Littlefield farm for 25 years. He was also employed byt he town of Milton as a truck driver for 13 years before retiring in 1982. He truly enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spending time at camp in Belvidere.

He is survived by his wife Mary of Milton; by his son, Stillman Burns and his wife Jane of Lewiston, Maine, by his daughters, Gladys Alger and her husband Raymond of Georgia and Nancy Jones of Milton; by six grandchildren, and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Barbara King of Mobile, Ala., and Shirley Bennett of Winooski, Vt., whom he thought of as, and raised as his daughters.

He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Frank Jones, Jr. on Oct. 29, 2000, and by his brothers, Ernie and Edmond Burns and his sister, Isabelle Russell.

A funeral service for Guy will be held Monday afternoon, June 18, 2001, at 1 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Memorials in his memory may be made to the VNA, 1110 Prim Rd., Colchester, VT 05446.

ROBERT JAMES HOWARTH

RICHFORD -- Robert James Howarth, age 81, passed away June 15, 2001, at the Holiday House Nursing Home in St. Albans after an extended illness.

Bob was born in New Bedford, Mass., Feb. 21, 1920 the son of the late James & Abbie (McGookin) Howarth.

He came to live in Richford at the age of three upon the death of his father and made his home with his aunt and uncle, Elwin & Mary Peck. He was a 1940 graduate of Richford High School and then worked for Sikorsky Aircraft for a short period of time before enlisting in the Army Air Force during WWII on Oct. 14, 1941. He was honorably discharged July 22, 1945. From that time on he worked for various companies in and around the Richford area, namely H.K. Webster, Larson's and the Richford Country Club for which he served as President, Manager and Director of the Club during his employment there from 1978 to 1997. He was a member of the American Legion POst #12 in Richford.

Bob was active in his community, serving on the Richford Ambulance for 24 years and before that assisting Alfred Amee in a similar service. He was Chief of Police in 1971 and 1972. He was very active in sports and was one of the persons responsible for starting little league baseball in Richford. He took part in the Vermont Golden Gloves in 1948 and was captain of the H.K. Webster Bowling Team, which won top spot in the Border Town League. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and a devoted golfer.

In 1946 he married Elizabeth Prue who survives him. He has a son, Dean Howarth of Richford; a daughter, Judith Holden of Soap Lake, Wash., and a daughter, Stacy Wells and her husband Randall of Fairfax; there are four grandchildren, James Howarth of Carlsbad, Calif., Samuel Burroughs of Soap Lake, Wash. and Anchorage, Alaska, and Ryan & Sheila Wells of Fairfax. He was predeceased by a grandson, Dana Howarth in 1977 and a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Howarth in 1997.

A graveside service was held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Richford Center Cemetery with Pastor Kate Tobey officiating. The Richford American Legion performed military honors. There will be no visiting hours.

ALYDIA R. KING

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Alydia R. King, age 87, died early Saturday, June 16, 2001, surrounded by her family at the Holiday House Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Swanton on Oct. 1, 1913, the daughter of Lulubelle Sartwell Longley. She married Morton I. King, Sr. July 20, 1936. She was a cook at the St. Albans Hospital for over 25 years, retiring in 1975. She was a life member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 321.

Besides her husband of 63 years, Alydia leaves six daughters, Betty Potvin of Worcester, Mass., Barbara Carpentier and her husband Thomas, Sally Walker and her husband Francis, Norma Oliver and her husband Roland, Joyce Giroux, all of St. Albans, and Earlene Demar and her husband Frederick of Fairfax; three sons, Morton I. King, Jr., Wendell King and his wife Holly, all of St. Albans, Michael King and his wife Cheryl of E. Highgate; a special daughter-in-law, Jeanne King of St. Albans, a brother James Longley and his wife Margaret of St. Albans, 27 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother, two sons-in-law, Charles Potvin and Raymond Giroux, two grandchildren, Charles Potvin, Jr., and Tracy Walker, and one great grandchildren, Nathan Lumbra.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the King family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., Monday evening. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

DR. JOHN WENDELL MacLEOD

NORTH HERO -- Dr. John Wendell MacLeod, 96, M.D., O.C., O.B.E., died peacefully on Sunday, June 10, 2001, at his home in North Hero, Vt. Dr. MacLeod had a great enthusiasm and compassion for the unfortunate, which led him to work as a teacher - miner with Frontiere College; then to McGill Medical School where he graduated in 1930 with the Holmes Gold Medal. Later to a war time career as a senior Naval Medical Officer for which he was awarded the OBE. AFter the war he practiced Internal Medicine in Montreal and Winnipeg. His interest in medical education took him to the University of Saskatchewan in 1952 where as Dean he expanded the Medical School curriculum to a full four year program. In 1962 he became the first executive secretary of the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges and was involved in the establishment of Medical Schools at Sherbrooke and Memorial Universities. As a recognized expert in the social aspects of health care and medical education, he served as consultant and advisor to many organizations throughout Canada, the USA and the world. He was an early and ardent supporter of universal health care and made a major contribution to the Hall Royal Commission on Health Services. In his retirement he was active on the Boards of the Centretown Community Health Centre in Ottawa and Frontier Colleges.

He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1980 and received Honourary Doctoral degrees from four Universities: Saskatchewan, Queens, Sherbrooke and Memorial. He was awarded the highest honours from the Canadian Medical Association, the Association of Canadian Medical Colleges, the Canadian Public Health Association, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

He was a friend and admirer of Norman Bethune, and was a founding member of the Bethune Memorial Society, co-authoring several publications and coordianting a Bethune Symposium in 1979. He was active in the Canada-China Friendship Society and was honoured several times in China.

He is survived by his beloved companion, Jolanta Sise of North Hero and Montreal, by his children, Wendy McDonald and her husband John of Edmonton, and Peter MacLeod and his wife Margaret of Ottawa, by his five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and his brother, Archibald.

He was predeceased by his wives, Margaret Wuerpel and Jessie McGeachy and by his brothers, Robert and Kenneth.

He will be missed by the many friends, students and colleagues who were touched by his personal warmth and outstanding abilities in all his various roles and careers.

A memorial service will be held in Montreal on June 20, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Mount Royal Funeral Complex. In lieu of flowers, donations in Wendell's memory may be made to Frontier College, 35 Jackson Avenue, Toronto, ON, M4T 1E2, or to a charity of one's choice. Local arrangements were by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton, Vt.

THOMAS C. VANDERHOVEN

CAMBRIDGE -- Thomas Clayton Vanderhoven, age 94, of South Main Street, Cambridge, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday evening, June 14, 2001. He was born March 18, 1907 in Rahway, N.J., son of the late Jesse William and Mary Ellen (O'Connor) Vanderhoven. He married the former Gertrude Orton of Fairfax. She predeceased him on March 18, 1974. He was employed as a field engineer with the state of New Jersey for many years. Tom loved Vermont's great outdoors, fishing and hunting in this area over the years with his good friend and hunting and fishing partner, Francis Cowie. He also had a great appreciation for art work and oil paintings. He was friendly to all with a great sense of humor and will be greatly missed by all of those who had the good fortune to know and love him.

He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jean Klingman, three grandchildren, Thomas Gates, Betty Gates and Barbie Gates; a great granddaughter, Emily Gates, all of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a brother, Leslie and three sisters, Margaret, Eleanor and Vivian.

Visiting hours will be held at Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 19, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral services will be held at The Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at 11 a.m. with The Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Sanderson Corners Cemetery, Fairfax. Memorial contributions in Tom's memory may be made to Cambridge Rescue Squad, PO Box 431, Jeffersonville, VT 05464 or Lamoille Home Health & Hospice, 54 Farr Ave., Morrisville, VT 05661. Arrangements are by The Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

ALAN L. LEMNAH

ST. ALBANS -- Alan L. Lemnah, age 61, died Thursday morning, June 14, 2001, at his home with his loving family at his side, following an extended illness. He was born in St. Albans May 29, 1940, son of the late Azos and Helen (Tabor) Lemnah. Alan was a custodian at Missisquoi Valley Union High School, retiring in 1991. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's parish in Fairfield most of his life.

He married Theresa E. King in St. Patrick's Church Oct. 31, 1964. Besides his wife of over 36 year, he is survived by their daughters, Karen Lemnah of St. Albans and Sarah Lemnah of Manchester, N.H., sisters, Marion Reynolds of St. Albans, Ruth Lemnah of Burlington, brothers, Carleton and his wife Madalene Lemnah of Newport and Swanton, Harold and his wife Marlene Lemnah of Swanton, sister-in-law, Myra Lemnah of Brandon, mother-in-law, Elizabeth King of Enosburg, sisters-in-law, Betty King of Enosburg and Barbara Collins of Bakersfield, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents Azos and Helen, he was predeceased by his son, John David Lemnah in 1965, his brother Robert Lemnah, sister H. Austine and her husband Paul Desautels, and his father-in-law, Kenneth King.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Fairfield. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be in the Lemnah family lot in St. George's Cemetery in Bakersfield. Memorials may be made to the Alan L. Lemnah Scholarship Fund for a Missisquoi Valley Union student, in care of the Franklin Lamoille Bank, 8 North Main St., St. Albans, VT 05478. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
