JOSEPH H. ROCK
ST. ALBANS, Vt. / TAMARAC, Fla. - Mr. Joseph H. Rock, age 79, resident of Tamarac, Fla., formerly of St. Albans, died Monday, April 10, 2006, at University Hospital in Tamarac, Fla. He was born in Swanton, May 7, 1926, the son of Hector and Rose (Martin) Rock. On Oct. 1, 1945, he married Angela Cadieux who survives him. He retired from the Central Vermont Railroad as a general agent in 1988 after 43 years of service. He was a member of the Central Vermont Veterans.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, Angela, Joseph leaves two sons and their spouses: Dennis and Becky Rock, and Vaughn and JoAnne Rock of St. Albans; a daughter, Helen and husband, David Bean of Orange City, Fla.; eight grandchildren: Kevin and Tina Bean, Keith and Julie Bean, Tanya Bean and her fiancé, Joshua McGhee, Stacy and Jeffrey Rouleau, Hillerie Rock, Joseph D. Rock, Angela S. Rock and her fiancé, Juan Contreras, Anthony Rock; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Rita Wade and Catherine and her husband, Ernest Sweet. Joseph was predeceased by a grandson, Christopher Rock; a great-grandson, Kyle Bean; his brothers, Leonard and Olsie; and five sisters: Angeline Cadieux, Gertrude Harnois, Celina Peyret, Clara Evans and Philamine Coolum.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Interment will be in the Rock family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

LAURIE A. RYAN
ST. ALBANS - Laurie A. Ryan, 45, a longtime area resident, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care from injuries sustained in an accident on March 25, 2006. She was born in Burlington, Vt. on March 27, 1961, the daughter of Marilyn (Richards) Newell and the late Larry A. Newell. On April 9, 2005, in St. Albans Laurie married Robert P. Ryan, who survives her.
For many years Laurie and her family operated the Red Top Restaurant.
In addition to her husband, Robert of St. Albans, survivors include her mother, Marilyn and her companion, John Flood of Swanton; her son, John Paul Farr and his companion, Mindy Ingerson of St. Albans; her daughter, Ashley Lee Johnston and her husband, Travis, and their son, who was Laurie’s pride and joy, Caleb, all of Swanton; her step-son, Holden Ryan of Barre and a special friend, who was like a son to Laurie, Patrick John Leahy of St. Albans; her sister, Debra Grevatt and her husband, Douglas, and their daughter, Fallyn of Philipsburg, Quebec; her brother, Larry “Bug” Newell and his companion, Heidi Hughes and his two sons, Ryan and Logan Newell and daughter, Amber Newell of St. Albans; her special aunt, Betty Primeau of St. Albans; her uncles, Gary Richards and his wife, Fay of Georgia and Homer Richards and his wife, Colleen of Swanton; and many nieces and nephews. Laurie is also survived by her mother-in-law, Anne Ryan Chase and her husband, Sanford of Worcester, Vt.; her sisters-in-law, Lorraine Wimble and her husband, Kendall of Waitsfield, Vt., Marlene Ryan of Montpelier, Vt., Ellen Roux of Sebastian, Fla., Audrey Morris and her husband, Shawn of Northfield, Vt.; and special friends, Nicholas and Lucy Alberger of Richmond, Va. She was predeceased by her father, Larry A. Newell in 1970.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2006, at 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans with the Reverend Mr. Duane Langlois, Deacon of Holy Angels Catholic Church, officiating. Laurie’s family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home.

RENE M. DURENLEAU
ALBURGH / SWANTON - Funeral Services were held Thursday, April 13, 2006, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, pastor of St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church in Alburg and St. Joseph’s Mission in Isle LaMotte officiated. The Old and New Testament Readings was proclaimed by Leonard D. James.
Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from Franklin County Airport, Civil Air Patrol, St. Mary’s Parish, Pete Paquette Real Estate and Development, My-T-Fine II, Office Quarters, Avon Representative, American Legion, Creller-Landon Post 60 in Alburgh, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles DaPrato Post 778 in Swanton and Border Air Limited.
The Honorary Bearers were Adrian Durenleau and Rene Durenleau; and Active Bearers were Dan Marcotte, Pete Paquette, Armand Chevier, Daniel Durenleau, Donald Taylor.
Interment will take place at a later date in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Randolph, Vt.
RENE M. ‘BING’ DURENLEAU
ALBURGH - Rene M. “Bing” Durenleau, age 79, passed away Friday evening, April 7, 2006, at the Haven Health Center in St. Albans Town.
Rene was born in Highgate on Dec. 31, 1926, the son of the late Hermengil and Marianne (Gagne) Durenleau. He attended schools in Franklin and Highgate.
Rene served his country for 22 years in the United States Air Force. During his career he was stationed in the Philippines, Morocco, Labrador, Texas, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Plattsburgh, N.Y. Because of his ability to speak French he was an interpreter / translator and later a special agent for the OSI. Rene retired from the Air Force in 1972 as a Master Sargent.
Rene was an aviation enthusiast. He went on his first airplane ride on June 22, 1943, and that was the beginning of his life long obsession. Rene designed and built his own airplanes. He has been a member of The Experimental Aircraft Association since 1954. At the time of his death he was working on the history of the Highgate Airport.
For the past 20 years Rene may also be remembered for his passion for astrological charts.
Rene was a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles DaPrato Post 778 in Swanton and the American Legion, Creller-Landon Post 60 of Alburgh.
In addition to his wife Katherine, he leaves four children: Joanne Parks of Elizabethtown, Pa., Rene C. Durenleau and his wife, Lori of Hummelstown, Pa., Christopher A. Durenleau of Harrisburg, Pa., and Timothy Durenleau and his wife, Wendy of Hummelstown, Pa.; two brothers: Daniel Durenleau, his wife Doris and Robert Durenleau, both of Franklin, Vt.; and two sisters: Margaret and husband, Henry Paquette and Madeleine Salisbury of Richford.
Rene was predeceased by his parents; brothers: Donat, Norman and Joseph; a sister, Yvette Durenleau; and a son, David Paul Durenleau.
Funeral Services were held today, April 13, 2006, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will officiate. Interment with full military honors will take place later this spring in the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph, Vt. Relatives and friends called at the funeral home this morning from 10 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.
GLENNA MAE BRULEY
WHITE HOUSE, Tenn. - Glenna Mae Bruley, 69, a long time resident of St. Albans, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2006, after a brief illness. She was born on Jan. 19, 1937, in Morrisville, Vt., the daughter of Albert and Katherine (Fuller) McGowan. She was raised and attended schools in Cambridge, Vt.
She is survived by her stepfather, Clifton Hislop, of Fairfax; a sister, Esther Meyer and her husband, William, of Montpelier; three brothers: Olin Bryce and his wife, Zona, of Cambridge, James Bryce and his partner, Betty Martel, of Fairfax, and Richard Bryce and his wife, Sheila, of Cincinnati, Ohio. She also leaves behind two stepsisters: Virginia Hanker of Essex Junction and Lucille Jimmo of Bristol; and a stepbrother, Carroll Bryce, of Swanton.
Glenna leaves behind five children: George Drinkwine, Donald Drinkwine, Suzanne Maxfield, of St. Albans, Pamela Catudel and her husband, Tony, of Fairfax, Walter Brouillette and his wife, Karen, of Highgate, and Linda White and her husband, Tim, of White House, Tenn. She also leaves behind several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2006, at 1 p.m. at the Northside Baptist Church, located at 1321 Fairfax Road in St. Albans. Pastor Bruce Patterson will be officiating.
EUGENE LOUIS CURTIS
SCHYLERFALLS, N.Y. / ALBURGH, Vt. - Eugene Louis Curtis, 67, a native of Alburgh, Vt. and a longtime resident of the Schylerfalls, N.Y. area, died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 22, 2005, in the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 15, 2006, at 1 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Vt. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will officiate. Interment will follow in the Curtis family lot in Alburgh Center Cemetery.
DAVID NEARY
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - David Neary, 64 of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away April 5, 2006. He was born Dec. 2, 1941, in St. Albans, Vt. and moved to this area six years ago from Bakersfield, Vt.
He was a retired heavy equipment operator, commercial pilot and instructor. He also raised Morgan Horses in Vermont. He was an avid boater and a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 89 Rotonda West. Mr. Neary served in the U.S. Army Infantry.
Survivors include his life long companion, Janet; daughters: Tammy Reeves of Irving, Texas, Wendy Neary of Foley, Ala.; sons: Bobby Lavender of Arlington, Texas, David Neary 2nd of Silverhill, Ala.; stepson, Scott Burton of Swanton, Vt.; brother, William A. Neary of S.D.
Memorial services will be directed by Flotilla 89 Rotonda West and Flotilla 98 Charlotte Harbor on April 19 at 5 p.m. in Charlotte Harbor.
BRUCE S. COYLE
ST. ALBANS - Funeral services for Bruce S. Coyle, who passed away on April 6, 2006, were held on Monday at 1 p.m. in Holy Angels Catholic Church with the Reverend Maurice J. Roy celebrating the Liturgy of Christian Burial. Organist and vocalist was Mary Jo Gillilan. Ministers of the Altar were Norman Bushey and Richard Brandt.
Upon entering the church, the white funeral pall was placed upon Bruce’s casket by his wife, Cathy, and children, Christopher, Patricia, and Scott. The Scriptures were proclaimed by his son-in-law, Tim Crowley, and granddaughter, Jennifer Crowley. The Eucharistic Gifts were presented at the Altar by grandchildren, Shannon and John Coyle and Lauren and Christine Crowley. Words of remembrance were shared by Scott Coyle.
In attendance were Kim Charboneau and Liza Bray, Bruce’s caregivers from the Franklin County Home Health Agency Hospice Program and representatives from Council 297, Knights of Columbus.
Casket bearers were Christopher Coyle, Tim Crowley, Matt Patalik, Jim Lehan, Patrick Lehan, and Gregory Flanagan.
Following committal prayers by Father Roy, interment was in the family lot at Holy Cross Cemetery.
The Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St.. assisted the family with arrangements.
STEPHANIE LYNN PHELPS
BAKERSFIELD, Vt. / GEORGETOWN, Texas - Stephanie Lynn Phelps, 16, of Georgetown, Texas, died on Wednesday, April 5, at the Respite House in Williston, Vt. following a 19 month battle with cancer.
Stephanie was born in Burlington, Vt. on June 30, 1989, the daughter of Keith M. Phelps and Cindy “Sidney” L. Johnston-Phelps. The family moved to the Austin, Texas area in 1994 and has just recently returned to Vermont and will be making their home in Enosburg Falls.
Stephanie was a junior at Georgetown High School and had been active in Choir, Theatre and Cheerleading. She loved music, books, movies, her computer and spending time with her friends, her family, and her cat Black Jack.
Stephanie is survived by her sister, Brittanie; her parents, Keith and Sidney; her grandfather, David Camp; Aunts and Uncles: Tami and Charles Gervais, Bill and Lisa Johnston, Michael and Yorini Johnston, Daryl and Sally Phelps, Kyle and Dawn Camp, Mark and Stella Camp; and many cousins and extended family members. She is predeceased by her maternal grandfather, William Johnston; and paternal grandmother, Barbara Camp.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 15, at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls. Visitation will be held from 12 to 1 p.m. with the service immediately following.
Guests will be invited and are encouraged to share memories and stories during the service. A reception will be held at the Phelps home following the service. All are welcome.

MARTHA ANN DESROCHERS-MURRAY
ST. ALBANS - Martha Ann Desrochers-Murray, 49, a lifelong area resident, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 6, 2006, at her home. She was born in St. Albans on June 25, 1946, the daughter of the late Robert E. and Janice M. (Simmons) Berry.
She was an Avon representative for many years and was also employed at South Main Grocery.
Survivors include her husband, Steven Murray; a son, Joseph R. Desrochers, and a daughter, Suzanne E. Desrochers, all of St. Albans; a sister, Linda Collins; a niece, Amanda Collins, both of Richford; and her canine companion, “Jack.”
The family wishes to thank Amcare Ambulance and the St. Albans Police Department for their assistance during this difficult time.
In accordance with Martha’s wishes, there will be no visitation and funeral services will be at the convenience of the family.

ASHLEY MAE LAPAN
SWANTON, Vt. / FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Ashley Mae Lapan, 18, a native of Swanton, Vt. and more recently of Fayetteville, N.C., died in a tragic automobile accident Thursday, April 6, 2006, in St. Pauls, N.C.
Born in Burlington, Vt. on Oct. 16, 1987, she was the daughter of Kelly (Lapan) Brewer and Richard Brewer of Fayetteville, N.C. and Todd Thomas of Swanton, Vt. Locally Ashley attended Missisquoi Valley Union High School and later West Bladen High School in North Carolina. She was able to enjoy her beautiful baby girl of three months, Aireonna Michele.
In addition to her daughter Aireonna, Ashley leaves her parents, Kelly and Richard Brewer, and her father, Todd Thomas; maternal grandparents, Robert and Shirley (Murphy) Lapan, and paternal grandparents, Robert and Ruth (Dubie) Thomas, all of Swanton; her aunts and uncles on the Lapan side of the family: Robert Jr. and Tracy Lapan and their family of Swanton, Dwayne “Dobie” Lapan and family of North Carolina and Fred and April Lapan and family of Japan; cousins, John Lapan, Beth Lapan, Jamie Lapan, Heather Simons and her husband all of Swanton, as well as Little Freddie Lapan, Emma Lapan, Melissa Lapan and William Lapan all of Swanton; aunts and uncles on the Thomas side of the family: Tina and Floyd Farrell of Troy, Penny and Richard Rogers, Wendy and Randy Price, Tammy and Bob Trombley and Bobbi and Tim Dolan, all of Swanton; two very close friends in Fayetteville, Jessica and Kalin; as well as several additional cousins. She will be greatly missed by her Aunt, Kathy Thompson Lussier, who helped bring Ashley into the world.
Ashley was predeceased by her maternal great-grandparents, John and Gladys Murphy; and a favorite Aunt, Evelyn Lampman.
Funeral Services will be held “Good Friday” afternoon, April 14, 2006, at 2 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Mr. Jeff Benay, Chairperson of the Governor’s Commission on Native American Affairs, will officiate. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 12 noon until the hour of the funeral.
Gifts in Ashley’s memory may be made to a trust fund that will be established for her daughter Aireonna, in care of, Kelly Brewer, 2555 Bladen Union Church Road, Fayetteville, NC 28306.
