KAREN LYNN MAGNAN
FAIRFIELD / ESSEX JUNCTION - Karen Lynn Magnan, 38, ascended into Heaven to sleep with the Angels on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, from her home, surrounded by her loving family. Karen was born in Burlington, on May 22, 1967, the daughter of James and Nancy (Geelhart) Benjamin.
Although Karen’s life was short, she accomplished much. She liked and excelled in many phases of life, like cooking and writing poetry, but her main interest was in agriculture and the family life style it offered. As a child and young lady she nurtured the love of the land and animals, especially cows and horses, by spending as much time as possible on her parents and grandparents farms in East Franklin. Karen graduated from Essex Junction High School in 1985 and from UVM in Agriculture in 1989. While at UVM she accomplished many honors. She was one of the founders and first president of CREAM, a student operated and managed dairy. Karen also was on the UVM cattle judging team, was a finalist in the Harry S. Truman award program, and spent one summer in Washington, D.C. as part of Sen. Leahy's staff. Upon graduation she managed the family farm in East Franklin. Under her control the herd milk average was one of the highest in the County and was selected as Ben & Jerry’s farm of the month in August of 1992.
On May 29, 1993, Karen married Joseph Magnan and moved to Fairfield to begin her family life. Karen quickly became an integral member of the Magnan Bros. Dairy Inc. She served as secretary/treasurer of the corporation, and excelled at organizing and managing multiple farm responsibilities. Karen founded the 4-H horse club "Pony Pals" which is very popular with the children of her community and was very involved in school including the E.L.F program and St. Patrick's activities.
Although Karen' s accomplishments were many, her greatest strength was how she handled difficulties. Her strong drive and desire to help others before herself has left all who knew her with strong admiration and inspiration. Her main love was that of her children which lasted to the very end. Among her hardships was her eight-year battle with breast cancer. The pain she endured, especially the last year, while she held on for her children and family was heroic. The last three months, when she was with us through the holidays, were against all odds as she made major contributions to happiness for her children and family. At midnight she and her children welcomed in the New Year with a toast. Twenty-one hours later she was summoned home to the Lord to help keep all land both beautiful and bountiful. We love you Karen and will never forget you. For every time we see crops grow and landscapes become more beautiful we know you are with us.
Karen is survived by her husband, Joseph, and their three special children, Shannon, Thomas, and Maria Magnan, all of Fairfield; her parents, James and Nancy Benjamin of Essex Junction; her sister, Debra Crook and her husband, Ken, and their children, Sarianna, Carl and Sean of Whangeri, New Zealand; her sister, Susan Scarano and her husband, Michael of Wappinger Falls, N.Y.; her brothers, Stephen Benjamin of Boca Raton, Fla., Jeffrey Benjamin and his wife, Spryng, and children, Hannah and Danielle of Johnson, Vt., and Timothy Benjamin of Essex Junction.
She also leaves her father and mother-in-law, Henry and Loretta Magnan of Fairfield; and brothers and sisters-in-laws: Gabrielle Tiffany and her husband, Michael, and their children, Emmett, John, Michelle, Hannah and Margaret of Fairfield, Martin Magnan and his wife, Susan, and children, Elizabeth and Sarah of Fairfield, Sarah Bentley and her husband, Thomas of Atlanta, Ga., Peter Magnan of Fairfield, Mark Magnan and his wife, Judy, and their son, William of Fairfield, Brendan Magnan of Milford, Conn., Matthew Magnan and his wife, Elaine of Fairfield, and Andrea Magnan of Fairfield. Karen also leaves many friends and beloved extended family members. Karen was predeceased by her grandparents, Newell and Charlene Benjamin, Mary Ellen and Percy Geelhart; and a brother-in-law, Francis Anthony Magnan.
Karen’s family would like to thank Dr. Hyman Muss, Dr. Terry Rabinovich and the Hospice VNA staff, especially Lisa Wester, Martha Brown, Sue McKenzie and Tanya Cimonetti for their excellent care and many kindnesses during Karen’s illness. Also thank you to her very special aunt, Mary Bates.
