HAROLD A. "HAL" PERRY

SWANTON -- Harold A. "Hal" Perry, 80, a native and longtime resident of the Swanton community, died early Wednesday morning, May 2, 2001, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston.

Mr. Perry was born in Swanton, Sept. 28, 1920, the son of the late Harold and Cora (Derick) Perry. He attended Swanton High School, graduating with the Class of 1938. He continued with his education at the National Youth Administration in Eastport, Maine, Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., Middle Georgia College in Cochran, Ga. and graduated in 1949 from the University of Vermont with a degree in Commerce and Economics/Industrial Management. From 1949 until his retirement in 1986 he was associated with the General Electric Company in Burlington. During that period he served in many positions at General Electric, retiring as a manager and senior buyer.

Mr. Perry was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Swanton. A member of Elfun Society (G.E.) and the Sigma Phi Fraternity (UVM) both in the Burlington area and also had served as coordinator of the Industrial Division for the Burlington, Vt. area United Fund Drive. He also faithfully served his country in the United States Air Force during WWII.

He leaves many friends and neighbors in the Swanton Community.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 7, 2001, at 10 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Reverend Marsha Hoecker, Rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church will officiate. Interment will take place in the Perry family lot in Riverside Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.

Gifts in Mr. Perry's memory may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Road, Williston, VT 05463.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home of Swanton, Vt.

CARLYSS G. ELWOOD

HIGHGATE ­ Carlyss G. Elwood, 69, a resident of the Cook Road in Highgate, died Tuesday morning, May 1, 2001, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

She was born in Laconia, N.H., Feb. 5, 1932. On April 20, 1981 she married Carl Elwood, Jr. who survives her. She attended The Church of the Rock in St. Albans.

In addition to her husband Carl of Highgate, Carlyss leaves a daughter, Donna St. Pierre and her husband David of Fairfield, and a son, Michael Fournier of Colorado. Also surviving are two step-children, Dean Elwood and his wife Terry of Alburg and Lynn Elwood of St. Albans, as well as several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends from McDonalds.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 5, 2001, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Reverend Roland Ludlam, Pastor of the Church of the Rock will officiate. Interment will follow in the Elwood family lot in Greenwood Cemetery in St. Albans. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home on Friday, May 4, 2001, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

MARIE B. (SHANGRAW) KEARNEY

JEFFERSONVILLE -- Marie Bertha (Shangraw) Kearney, age 85, of Jeffersonville, passed away Monday, April 30, 2001, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was born in Cambridge, Vt. Dec. 17, 1915, daughter of the late Arthur and Clara "Carrie" Belle (Burnor) Shangraw. She was a graduate of Cambridge High School Class of 1936 and was also a member of the Alumni Association. She resided for many years in Patchogue, Long Island, N.Y. with her husband, William Kearney, who predeceased her in 1965. She returned to her home state of Vermont in 1968. She was a former member of St. Francis deSales Church in Patchogue, N.Y., The Catholic Daughters of America and The Crescendo Club in Jeffersonville. Marie retired from IBM in 1986. The family would like to sincerely thank the wonderful staff at Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester for the extra special personal attention and excellent care provided to Marie over the last six years in a loving environment she comfortably called "Home." She will be greatly missed by all of those who knew and loved her.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Joy Kearney of Cresco, Pa., a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Richard Thompson of Jeffersonville; two grandsons, Bryan and Sean Kearney of Florida; a sister-in-law, Yole Shangraw of Barre, Vt.; many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by an infant son, James in 1940 and an infant daughter, Grace in 1943; five brothers, William Shangraw, Fred Shangraw, Timothy Shangraw, Eugene Shangraw, Harold Shangraw; five sisters, Clara Larrow, Matilda Hibbard, Rose Fredericks, Louise, Grenon, Frieda Bertrand.

Visiting hours will be held at The Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Friday, May 4, 2001, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Mary's Church in Cambridge on Friday, May 4, 2001, at 1 p.m. with Reverend Francis Prive officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Jeffersonville Village Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Marie's memory to The Green Mountain Nursing Home Recreational Program, 1102 Ethan Allen Avenue, Colchester, VT 05446. Arrangements are by The Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main Street, Fairfax.

JACQUELYN ELAINE NELSON SWEENY

BARRE/ST. ALBANS ­ Jacquelyn Sweeny, 78, a resident of Barre since 1968, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin following an illness of about two months. She was born in St. Albans March 2, 1923, the daughter of the late Clayton L. Nelson and Jennie (Guyette) Nelson. She was the widow of Dr. Howard M. Sweeny who died May 29, 1979.

Jacquelyn was a loved and loving wife, mother and grandmother and life-long caring contributor to and supporter of animal humane treatment organizations and causes.

Mrs. Sweeny is survived by four sons, Bruce D. Sweeny, Sr. of Burke, Va., George N. Sweeny of Schaumburg, Ill., Craig S. Sweeny of Barre, Vt., and Chris D. Sweeny of Alexandria, Va.; two grandchildren, Dawn Jacquelyn Aponte of South Riding, Va., and Bruce D. Sweeny, Jr. of Burke, Va., and twin great-granddaughters, Olivia Jacquelyn and Evelyn Laura Aponte. She also leaves a brother, Clayton L. Nelson, Jr. of Williston, Vt., and a sister, Nancy Ann Kennedy of Barnet, Vt. She will be greatly missed by her adored dog "Poppy."

A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery, So. Main St., St. Albans. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

LANDON G. STEINER

VALRICO, FLA. -- Landon G. Steiner, age 14, of Valrico, Fla., passed away April 30, 2001. He was born Oct. 13, 1986 in Middlebury, Vt., the son of Lynne Lear and Armando Fuksman.

Landon was a student at Randall Middle School. He was a trainer for the Brandon Bears and a band tutor at Randall Middle School.

He is survived by his parents, Lynne Lear and Armando Fuksman, his brother Ryan Steiner and his sister, Gabrielle Steiner, all of Valrico, Fla., paternal grandparents, David & Ellen Fuksman of Valrico, Fla., maternal grandparents, James & Dorothy Lear of St. Albans, Vt., and by many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday at Bay Life Church, Brandon, Fla. Interment will follow at Serenity Meadows Memorial Park, Riverview, Fla. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Landon G. Steiner Foundation, c/o Southern Exchange Bank, 3403 Lithia-Pinecrest Rd., Valrico, FL 33594.

DAVID L. SMITH

GEORGIA-David L. Smith, 46, passed away Monday, April 30, 2001 at the Fletcher Allen Health Care from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on April 23. He was born in Burlington, December 29, 1954, the son of the late Donald G. and Dorothy (Riggs) Smith. On July 23, 1983, he married Robin Poulin in Burlington.

He was a 1972 graduate of Burlington High School and has been employed for the last five years by Barry Callebaut U.S.A., Inc. David was a member of the U.S. Parachutist Association. He served his country in the U.S. Airforce.

In addition to his wife, Robin of Georgia; he is survived by his son, Justin Michael Smith of Georgia; two sisters and their husbands, Deborah and Michael Henry of Underhill Center, Betty and Allen Price of Centennial, CO; a brother, Brian J. Smith of St. Albans; sisters-in-law and their husbands, Laura and Alan Blaise of Monkton, Rebecca and Glenn Richardson of Milton; brothers-in-law, W. Mark Poulin of Westford, and Kirk and his wife, Tammy Poulin of Burlington; nieces, Stephanie and Mallorie Price and Amber Poulin; and nephews, David and Daniel Henry, Chris and Adam Smith, and Tyler and Corey Blaise.

David was a loving husband and father and cared deeply for his friends and co-workers. He also loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 3, at 11:00 A.M. in the Georgia Plain Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in David's name to the Department of Hepatology, Fletcher Allen Health Care, 111 Colchester Ave., Burlington, VT 05401. Friends may call on Wednesday 6-9 PM in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

ARLENE M. GILMOND

RICHFORD -- Arlene M. Gilmond, age 61, died Friday morning, June 29, 2001, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans following a brief illness.

She was born Nov. 16, 1938 in Albany, Vt., the daughter of the late Daniel and Minnie (Poutry) Peters.

She was a resident of Richford and Berkshire most of her life and was employed at Space Research in No. Troy, Vermont Handle Co. in Richford and most recently Redstone Villa Nursing Home in St. Albans, retiring in 1993.

She is survived by three sons, Ricky Jacobs and his wife Debbie, George Jacobs and his wife Jean, and Lonnie Jacobs and his friend Heather Flood, all of Richford; one daughter, Kim Jacobs and her friend Buzz Royea of Enosburg Falls; eight grandchildren, Lisa & Jonathan Jacobs, Amy Franklin, George IV & Tyler Jacobs, Joe'i Jacobs, Joshua & Matthew Jacobs; five great grandchildren, Kayla, Karly & Korey Paquette, Mahlik & Jeremy Franklin, three stepsons and their wives, Allston & Deborah Gilmond of Milton, Daniel & Jane Gilmond of Palm Springs, Calif., and Jay & Barb Gilmond of Essex; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Brenda & Geoffrey Green, and Kari-Ann & Bruce Trudo, both of Essex; several stepgrandchildren; two sisters, Irene Jewett and her husband Doug of Richford, and Louise Hartman of Sheldon; several nieces and nephews; her mother-in-law, Doris Gilmond of Ferrisburgh; two brothers-in-law, Craig Gilmond and his wife Chickie, and Gary Gilmond, both of Georgia, a sister-in-law, Carmelita Kirby of Greenville, S.C.; her entrusted, loyal friend Showme. She was predeceased by her husband Allston Gilmond, Jr., her mother, Minnie Juckett; her father, Daniel Peters; her stepfather, Emmett Juckett; two brothers, Walter & Stanley Peters.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Richford First Baptist Church with Pastor Albert Willette officiating. Interment will follow in the Richford Center Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on 140 Main St., Richford.

LUCILLE MARY LaPLANT

HIGHGATE -- Lucille Mary LaPLant, 71, a lifelong area resident, died early Friday morning, June 29, 2001, in her home on Vermont Route 78.

She was born in Swanton, June 16, 1930, the daughter of the late George and Lucy (Gardner) Brow. She attended St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Highgate Center and was a member of the Abenaki Nation of Vermont.

Lucille leaves her son George LaPlant and his wife Nancy; two daughters, Hortense Pudvah and Lucille Hemond; one brother Herbert Lampman and a sister, Rose Brow. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Kenneth "Red" Bohannon of Highgate.

In addition to her parents, Lucille was predeceased by a son Frank LaPlant Jr. and by two brothers, Francis and Raymond Brow.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 2, 2001, at 10 a.m. from Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Paul C. Houde, Administrator of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Swanton and St. Louis Parish in Highgate Center will officiate. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at Kidder Memorial Home on Monday morning, July 2, 2001, from 9 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.

LEONARD RALPH CHEVALIER

WEST SWANTON -- Leonard Ralph Chevalier, 89, a lifelong Swanton resident died Wednesday afternoon, June 27, 2001, in the Holiday House Nursing Facility in St. Albans Town.

He was born in Swanton, Feb. 29, 1912, the son of the late Adelard and Ernestine (Ouimette) Chevalier. He attended St. Anne's Academy and on May 28, 1966, married the former Theresa Campono who survives him.

An automotive mechanic for all his working life, Leonard owned and operated Leonard's Gulf Station on First Street for several years. He was a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In addition to his wife Theresa of West Swanton, Leonard also leaves his son Joseph Chevalier, granddaughter Megan Chevalier and family, all of West Swanton, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Several brothers and sisters predeceased him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, June 30, 2001, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Saturday morning, beginning at 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. followed by a procession to Nativity Church. Gifts in Leonard's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

LOUELLA CHADWICK KITTELL

St. Albans -- Miss Louella Chadwick Kittell, 104, a well known retired junior high school teacher, passed away early Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at her home. She was born in Sheldon May 22, 1897, the daughter of the late Hubbard and Lucy (Chadwick) Kittell. For many years, she owned and operated Charlotte-Ellen Villa, a well known local tourist home on North Main Street. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Mable and Norah Kittell.

Miss Kittell was a graduate of St. Albans High School in 1916, Swanton Teachers' Training School in 1917, and received a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Vermont in 1934. She then taught in North Calais for 5 years and was principal at the Derby Line Grammar School for 4 years. Returning to St. Albans, she taught at Church Street School for 41 years, retiring in 1967.

In 1961, Miss Kittell was awarded "Woman of the Year" by the Greater St. Albans Chamber of Commerce. She was an avid bell collector and belonged to the Adirondack Chapter of the American Bell Association and the New England Bell Association.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Fireside Club, and Woman's Fellowship. Her other memberships include Watchful Circle of the King's Daughters, Welden Chapter #79, O.E.S., Robert Morris Chapter, O.E.S., Bellevue Rebekah Lodge #26, Zeta Chapter of Delta Gamma Society, Sheldon Cemetery Association, the "251" Club of Vermont, St. Albans Chamber of Commerce, and Vermont Chamber of Commerce. Also, St. Albans Elementary Teacher's Society, Vermont Retired Teachers Association, St. Albans Historical Society, St. Albans Garden Club, Missisquoi Valley Arts and Crafts, Inc., and was a life member of the Vermont Congress of Parents and Teachers.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at 11:00 A.M. in the First Congregational Church with the Pastor Mary Beth Hutchinson officiating. At Miss Kittell's request there will be no visiting hours. A reception for friends will be held in the church parlors immediately following the church service. Interment will be in the family lot in Sheldon Village Cemetery at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Louella C. Kittell Scholarship Fund c/o the First Congregational Church, Church St, St. Albans. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street.
