VIRGINIA R. MEEHAN
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. / FRANKLIN, Vt. - Mrs. Virginia R. Meehan, 87, a 30 year resident of Scottsdale, Ariz. and a resident of Franklin, Vt. since Sept. 11, 2001, passed away on Monday afternoon, Jan. 16, 2006, at the Franklin County Rehabilitation Center in St. Albans Town.
Born in Syracuse, N.Y. on April 12, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Edgar Harry and Margaret Agnes (Kelly) Bowen. She attended and graduated from Powelson Business Institute in Syracuse, N.Y. and in 1960 became associated with American Airlines in Syracuse later transferring to Phoenix, Ariz. and retiring in 1983. In her earlier years she worked for the Army Technical Training Command in Atlantic City, N.J. as well as the United States Engineering Office in Manhattan, N.Y. and in 1952 she became associated with the United States Department of Agriculture. She was married on Oct. 3, 1942, to John F. Meehan, who predeceased her on Nov. 23, 2001.
Mrs. Meehan enjoyed traveling the world as well as her other interest of Egyptian History, Airplanes, golf and gardening. She was a parishioner of St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Highgate Center.
Mrs. Meehan leaves two daughters: Valerie Lloyd of Franklin and Cheryl Hewitson of Tucson, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated privately from St. Louis Roman Catholic Church in Highgate Center. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment with her late husband will take place in the family lot in FT. Huachuca, Ariz.
Gifts in Mrs. Meehan’s memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans 05478.

BARBARA R. SWEENY
ST. ALBANS - Largely attended funeral services for Barbara R. Sweeny,
who passed away on Jan. 12, 2006, were held on Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church with The Reverend Leonidas B. Laroche celebrating a Mass Christian Burial. Assisting for the Mass was The Reverend Mr. Jack Rixon, Deacon of St. Mary's Church, who was also the homilist. Organist and vocalist was Mary Jo Gillilan. Ministers of the Altar were Robert LeClair and John Manahan. Ushers were Deputy Sheriffs; Thomas Billow and Carl Johnson
The white funeral pall was placed on the casket by Barbara's daughter and son, June Lamphere and Jay Sweeny. The Eucharistic gifts were presented at the altar by her grandchildren Emily and Derrick Smith. The scripture readings were proclaimed by Mary Connor.
The procession was escorted to the church by members of the St. Albans City Police Department, the Franklin County Sheriff's Department and the Vermont State Police. An honor guard was formed by the Franklin
County Sheriff's Department, Vermont State Police, St. Albans City Police, Swanton Police Department, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, U. S. Department of Homeland Security, Essex Police Department, Grand Isle
Sheriff's Department, Caledonia County Sheriff's Department, Williston
Police Department, South Burlington Police Department, Middlesex Police
Department, St. Albans Town Fire Department, St. Albans City Fire Department, and AmCare Ambulance.
In attendance also were representatives of Northwestern Medical Center, nurse colleagues of the former Kerbs Memorial Hospital, administration, teachers, and staff of St. Albans Town Educational Center, school nurses from many Franklin County Schools, Vermont Family Court, Vermont District Court, Franklin County Probate Court and Clerk's office, Vermont Superior Court, staff and faculty of Bellows Free Academy, St. Albans Town Selectboard and Administration, Northwest Unit for Special Investigations, Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, Foster Grandparent Program, Maplefield's Coffee Group, Vermont Ducks Unlimited, S.R. Smith Real Estate, Swanton Chamber of Commerce, Clarence Brown, Inc.
Casket bearers were Judge Howard VanBenthuysen, Sergeant Michael Aamodt, Randy Rocque, Russell Kruse, David MacCallum and Walter Krul.
Following the Mass a bereavement luncheon and gathering of family and friends was hosted by the Bereavement Committee of St. Mary's at the Parish Center.
Entombment took place to await spring interment in the family lot at St. Albans Bay Cemetery.
On Sunday evening, Father Laroche conducted a Vigil for the Deceased at the Heald Funeral Home.
FLORENCE B. ROBERTS
ST. ALBANS - Florence B. Roberts, 63, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006, at Northwestern Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born in Ashuelot, N.H. on July 25, 1942, the daughter of the late Arthur and Delia (Rivers) Ploof.
Graveside funeral services will be held later this spring at a time to be announced. The Heald Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
BARBARA R. SWEENY
ST. ALBANS BAY - Barbara R. Sweeny, 74, passed away at Northwestern Medical Center, with her family at her side, on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, following a brief illness. She was born in Burlington on Sept. 20, 1931, the daughter of the late Louis F. and Alice R. Perry.
Barbara grew up in St. Albans, attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from the DeGosbriand School of Nursing. She was a nurse for many years at the former Kerbs Hospital in St. Albans. She had a great love for children, became the School Nurse for the St. Albans Town Elementary School at St. Albans Bay and later at the St. Albans Town Central School. She served as a guardian ad litem with the Franklin County Family Court and for many years as a member of the St. Albans Town School Board.
She is survived by her daughter, June Lamphere and June’s daughter Emily Smith and son Derrick Smith of Fairfield; her sons: Mark Sweeny and wife, Christine of Swanton, Gary Sweeny and his two sons, Brendan and Andrew of Williston, Jeffrey Sweeny and wife, Krista of St. Albans, Jay Sweeny and his special friend, Ruth Miller and Jay’s son Justin Oddy of St. Albans Bay, William Sweeny and wife, Amy of Berkshire, her brother George Perry and wife, Jackie of Milton, her sister, Ruth Garner and husband, Al of Milton; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Because of her love for children, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Barbara’s memory to the Barbara Sweeny Hat & Mitten Fund, c/o David MacCallum, 169 South Main St., St. Albans 05478, to insure St. Albans Town students are always warm; or to the Franklin/Grand Isle Kids, VT Foster and Adoptive Parents Assoc, c/o Karen Gagne, 649 Tarte Road, Highgate Center, Vt. 05459.

WILLIAM T. COUNOS, SR.
ST. ALBANS - The Burial Office and Holy Communion for William Thomas Counos Sr., who passed away on Jan. 9, 2006, was celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Garey W. Eley, a family friend, officiant and homilist. Assisting on the altar was the Reverend Mr. James Ballard, Deacon of St. Luke’s Church. Donna Costes was organist and Claire Chevalier Hungerford was soloist.
The bells were tolled by Nils Berglund. The Chalice Bearer was Douglas Underwood and Acolyte was Donald Fournier. The Gospel was proclaimed by Deacon Ballard, who also was Intercessionist offering the Prayers of the People. The First Reading was by Senator George Costes and the Second Reading by RADM Warren Hamm. Words of remembrance were spoken by Bill’s daughter, CeCe Wick and an Eulogy was offered by RADM Hamm.
The procession into the church was led by Piper James MacKenzie followed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Color Guard and the Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post 758 Honor Guard.
In attendance were representatives of the Franklin County and Grand Isle Bar Associations, Kissane Associates, Franklin County Superior Court, Vermont District Court, Franklin County Probate court and Clerk’s Office, Tollgrade Communications, Georgia Pines Association, Bellows Free Academy Athletic Department, Kittell Branagan & Sargent, Montcalm Real Estate, St. Albans Historical Society and Franklin County Museum, St. Albans Garden Club, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church family, and several local law offices.
Honorary Bearers were Senator George Costes, James Hance, Frank Read, Merrill Hungerford, James Brouillette, and Nils Berglund.
Urn ark bearers were Korey Counos, Kyle Counos, Tyler Wick, Jeffrey Wick, Roman Zaboronek, and Jack Bliss.
Following the service the American flag honoring the World War II and Korean Conflict Army veteran was presented to Bill’s wife, Louise and his son, Bill by RADM Warren Hamm. The Color Guard and Honor Guard were piped from the church during the recessional.
A luncheon and reception followed in the Parish Hall hosted by Jerri Johnson and Barbara Hamm and the Ladies of St. Luke’s.
At 2 p.m., interment was in the family lot at Riverside Cemetery in Swanton with Father Eley conducting a committal service. The 158th Fighter Squadron from Camp Johnson provided full military honors with Major Melvin Terry as Officer in Charge, Chief MSgt Ken Johnson as NCOIC, with the firing party consisting of TSgt Erika Mercier, TSgt Jim Bushey, Senior MSgt Scott Valley TSgt Brian Wells, MSgt Craig Sanborn, and TSgt Troy Cholewa.
The American Legion Color Guard posted members at Bill’s Urn during the visitation. The Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans assisted the family with arrangements.
VERA M. EMCH
ENOSBURG - Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, at the West Enosburg Methodist Church with Pastor Cheryl Heater officiating. Organist was Carolyn Whiting.
Words of remembrance were offered by several family and friends. Interment will be held next spring in the Sheldon Village Cemetery.
Bearers were Vera’s grandchildren, Aaron, Sarah, Melody, Christopher, Tyler, Benjamin, and Thomas.
A gathering was held by the West Enosburg Methodist Women at the Enosburg Falls United Methodist Church.
Spears Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
DORIS M. O’CONNOR
FAIRFIELD - Funeral services for Doris M. O’Connor, who passed away on Jan. 8, 2006, were held on Friday, Jan. 13, 2006, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with The Reverend Joseph T. Sullivan celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Organist and vocalist was Mary Jo Gillilan.
The white funeral pall was placed on Doris’ casket by her grandsons, Casey and Cris O’Connor and her son, Robert placed the crucifix on the pall. The Eucharistic gifts were presented at the altar by Doris’ grandchildren, Leanne, Caleb, and Randy O’Connor
In attendance were representatives of Franklin County Home Health Agency.
The casket bearers were Doris’ sons Roderick O’Connor, Robert O’Connor, and Robert Yandow; and her grandsons, Casey O’Connor, Cris O’Connor, and Caleb O’Connor.
Following committal prayers by Father Sullivan, interment was in the family lot at Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington.
The Heald Funeral Home of St. Albans assisted the family with arrangements.

ENOSBURG - Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Benedict Kiely celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial, assisted by Leonard Charron. Altar servers were Guy’s great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Jarek Larivee. Organist/Soloist was Mary Jo Gillilan. Scripture readings were proclaimed by his great-grandchildren, Taylor and David Gagne. Offertory gifts were presented by his granddaughters, Tammy Gagne, Jodi Cox, Amy Eldridge, and Tina Larivee.
Eucharistic ministers were his daughter, Lynette Vaillancourt, and granddaughter-in-law, Jeannette Larivee. Following communion a poem written by his grandson, Shawn Larivee, was also read by him. Interment followed in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his grandsons, Jeff Larivee, Adam and Jason Robtoy, Jim, Shawn, Chad and Todd Larivee, Jason, Joey and Aaron Vaillancourt, Jeremy Cutting, Nicholas Boudreau, and Matthew Gleason. The pallbearers also draped the pall on the casket.
In attendance were delegations from Enosburg Falls Lions Club, St. Albans Lions Club, Essex Lions Club, Enosburg Falls Country Club, Franklin County Home Health Agency, Our Lady of the Meadows, Franklin County States Attorney Office, and Vermont State Police.

After graduating, Barbara followed her mother’s footsteps and worked for many years a nurse at the former Kerbs Memorial Hospital in St. Albans. Barbara had a great love for children and went on to become the School Nurse for the St. Albans Town Elementary School at St. Albans Bay and later at the St. Albans Town Central School. She was very active with the children of Franklin County serving as a guardian ad litem with the Franklin County Family Court and served many years as a member of the St. Albans Town School Board. She loved the outdoors and could often be found working in her vegetable and flower gardens around her home.
She is survived by her son, Mark Sweeny and his wife, Christine of Swanton; her son Gary Sweeny and his two sons, Brendan and Andrew of Williston; her daughter, June Lamphere and June’s daughter, Emily Smith and son, Derrick Smith of Fairfield; her son, Jeffrey Sweeny and his

ROBERT J. RAINVILLE
ST. ALBANS - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Mr. Robert Joseph Rainville, Thursday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Father Leonidas Laroche, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, concelebrated with Father Francis Connor, pastor of St. Luke’s Church in Fairfax and Ascension Parish in Georgia. The Holy Scripture Lessons were read by his nephew, Donald Tougas. Altar servers were Norman Bushey and Fabio Choiniere. Mary Jo Gillilan was the organist and soloist. Words of fond remembrances were shared by his brother, Gilles Rainville, and sister-in-law, Lillian Rainville.
Omitted from his obituary was his brother-in-law, Yvan Langelier of Fairfax.
Attending were representatives of the Altar Society of the Church of the Nativity, in Swanton, Beth-El Housing neighbors, St. Albans Co-Operative Creamery, Germaine Bilodeau Construction and Our Lady of the Meadows staff.
Bearers were his nephews, Ronald Paquette, Andrew Rainville, Gilles Rainville Jr., Luke Rainville, Marc Rainville and Steve Rainville.
Following Prayers of Committal by Father Laroche and Father Connors, entombment took place, pending spring burial in the Rainville family lot in St. Luke’s Cemetery in Fairfax.
