CLARE B. SHEPPARD

ST. ALBANS -- Clare B. Sheppard, 70, a resident of St. Albans since 1965, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 8, 2001 at Northwestern Medical Center with her loving family at her side following a brief illness. She was born in Brooklyn, NY August 2, 1930, the daughter of the late Paul W. and Stephanie Siney Bigelow.

Clare was a member of the First Congregational Church and sang in the choir. She also belonged to the St. Albans Historical Society, the St. Albans Historical Museum, the Autonoe Club, the St. Albans Garden Club, Federated Garden Clubs of Vermont and the Day Lily Society. She enjoyed gardening, playing bridge, music, genealogy, history, astronomy and working at the Museum. She loved books and her collection of Day Lilies. She attended Mt. Holyoke and was a graduate of Johnson State College.

Survivors include four sons; Matthew and his wife, Layne Sheppard of Tampa, Fla., Paul and his wife, Mary Sheppard of Swanton, Christopher and his wife, Barbara Sheppard of Oceanport, N.J. and Andrew Sheppard of St. Albans, two daughters and their husbands; Cynthia and Michael Leadbeater of St. Albans and Florence and John Hawkins of Chicopee, Mass., two sisters; Nancy Bird of New York, N.Y., and Barbara Roy of Saratoga, N.Y., ten grandchildren; Daniel, Louise and Richard Sheppard, Angela Powers and her husband, Randy, Jesse Bates, Ryan Leadbeater, PerryAnne, Caroline and Kim Sheppard and Rachel Hawkins, two great grandchildren, Chance and Logan Sheppard and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the First Congregational Church. Pastor Mary Beth Hutchinson will officiate. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Clare's family will receive friends in the church on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

ALTHEA GREENE

1922-2001 ­ Preceded in death by her husband, H. Carlton (Bud), she was the beloved mother and cherished friend of Nancy Provencher (Jack), Marilyn Herbert (Michael), and Richard Greene (Regina); treasured sister, Lucille Fahlman, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Althea was active in her church and taught Home Economics at the Essex Junction High School from 1960 ­ 1985 under the administration of Stanley Knapp and Ray Tucker.
She leaves a legacy of her love for the Lord, her zeal for life, and her effervescent smile, which have permeated our hearts. She shall be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2001, at 3:30 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 So. Main Street, St. Albans, VT.

NORMAN PAUL BILODEAU

HIGHGATE CENTER ­ Norman Paul Bilodeau, 65, a lifelong resident of this community died in a tragic accident Friday, May 4, 2001, at his home.

Norman was born in Highgate Center, March 19, 1936, the son of the late Victor and Yvonne (Gagne) Bilodeau. He attended schools in Highgate and spent most of his working life assisting on various area farms. He will always be remembered as a person who loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.

He leaves his brothers and sisters, Doris Nadeau of Highgate Center, Anita Therrien and her husband Paul of Highgate Springs, Gisele Smith of Burlington, Pauline Greenia of Sheldon, Theresa Blouin and her husband Octave of St. Albans, Louise Smith and her husband Alton of Hyde Park, Alise Estell and her husband Roger of Somers, Conn., Lionel Bilodeau of Georgia Plains, Germain Bilodeau and his wife Patricia of St. Albans, Andre Bilodeau of Orlando, Fla., Donald Bilodeau and his companion Flo Scofield of Colchester, and Reginald Bilodeau and his wife Sue of St. Albans, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Norman was predeceased by a brother, John Bilodeau and a sister, Rachel Gagne.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at 11 a.m. from St. Louis Church, Lamkin Street, Highgate Center. The Celebrant will be the Pastor, Father Charles H. Ranges, SSE. Interment will follow in the Bilodeau family lot in St. Louis Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, Swanton, Vermont.

FATHER JOHN LEDOUX

ST. ALBANS -- Father John Ledoux, age 77, died Sunday afternoon, May 6, 2001, in Redstone Villa, where he had resided for the past month. He was born in St. Albans Sept. 2, 1923, son of the late Charles E. and Leonora F. (Constantine) Ledoux. John attended Holy Angels Grammar School and graduated from Bellows Free Academy. He then entered the St. Thomas Seminary in Hartford, Conn., two years later he transferred to the Seminary of Philosophy in Montreal, Que. for two years and his final four years of Theology was at the Grand Seminary in Montreal.

Father John was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest June 5, 1950. His first assignment was at Notre Dame Parish in St. Johnsbury, followed by St. Joseph's Parish in Burlington. He then became pastor of St. Michael's Church in Greensboro Bend, then on to St. Anthony's Church in Sheldon Springs, to St. Pius X in Essex Center, then to St. Anthony Church in Burlington, and retired after being pastor for 12 years at St. Stephen's Church in Winooski. Father John was an active priest for 43 years, retiring June 15, 1993 and continued to assist at masses in several parishes near his home in Essex Center. Father John has served in many capacities for the Diocese of Burlington and has been the Chaplain for the State of Vermont Knights of Columbus and Chaplain for the Essex Jct., Council #2046 K of C.

Father is survived by his sister, Jeannette and her husband Gordon Chevalier of St. Albans, his brother, Leonard and his wife Esther (Jacobs) Ledoux of Plattsburgh, N.Y., 18 nieces and nephews, several great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Cecile Terry on May 23, 1997.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, St. Albans by the Most Reverend Bishop Kenneth Angell, Bishop of Burlington. Friends and relatives are invited to attend the calling hours from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans. The transfer of Father John Ledoux to Holy Angels Church will take place Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. where he will lie in state until the funeral mass. Interment will be in the Lavallee/Ledoux family lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

LAEL LIVAK

RICHMOND ­ Lael Livak, the beloved daughter of Frank & Joyce (Kenyon) Livak, died Wednesday, May 2, 2001.

She was born in Burlington on Dec. 16, 1949. Lael was in the last graduating class of Richmond High School (1967). She graduated from UVM with a BS degree and then did advanced study in pattern design, sewing and tailoring. She was a designer of wedding gowns, costumes and historically authentic costumes, window treatments and draperies for Follett House and similar projects.

Lael taught sewing to many young people. She founded her own business in 1974. She did volunteer work at Shelburne Museum in antique clothing and textile restoration, as well as costumes for the Andy Williams Christmas show which was filmed in Shelburne. All of her work was meticulously well crafted.

Lael began Reiki training in early 1989. She earned the following degrees: First, Second, Third Degree and First Degree Reiki Teacher Training. In April 2001, she completed her First Degree as a Reiki Master Teacher. Lael was especially proud of this degree. Harmony Transmission was her specialty. She was dedicated to the healing arts.

Lael took great pride in being a seventh generation Vermonter. She never lamented about past challenges. One of her mottoes was, "Do not allow yesterday to take up too much of today. Live now and be happy." Her shining faith and service to her family and friends will be treasured and remembered always. Her spirit was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her loving family, her mother Joyce (Kenyon Livak of Richmond, her father Frank Howard Livak of Anderson, S.C., brothers Kenyon M. Livak of Richmond, Roman E. Livak and his wife Guthrie Smith of Huntington, her aunt Avis R. Smith of St. Albans, nieces and nephews, Natalie, Noble, Faith, Satira, Erin, Tiffany, Kyle, Alek, Leona and Kirsten; her cousins, Amy Holm, Polly Smith and Julie Lebo, Gary and Sam Smith, her much loved dog Mr. Muttley, her former sisters-in-law, Joy Hopkins and Bonnie Gordon, and many dear and close friends.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. in Holy Rosary Church, Richmond on Monday, May 7, 2001, with burial to follow in Riverview Cemetery. Visiting hours were Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Gifford Funeral Home, 22 Depot St., Richmond. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Howard Bank, PO Box 670, Richmond, VT 05477, for the establishment of a Vermont Reiki Scholarship in memory of Lael Livak.

HELEN R. PATCH

ENOSBURG FALLS ­ Helen R. Patch, age 77, widow of Philip C. Patch, died Friday evening, May 4, 2001, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

She was born Jan. 1, 1924 in East Fairfield, the daughter of the late John S. & Anna (Brennan) Riley.

She was a resident of Enosburg Falls since 1955 and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She was a 1941 graduate of Brigham Academy in Bakersfield, and a 1945 graduate of the St. Albans School of Nursing, receiving her R.N. License that same year. She was employed as the Operating Room Supervisor at Kerbs Hospital in St. Albans when it opened in 1950. She was the first school nurse at the Enosburg Falls High School and Elementary School, as well as the nurse at Montgomery and Bakersfield Elementary Schools, retiring in 1986. She married the love of her life, Philip C. Patch on Sept. 11, 1950, he predeceased her on Sept. 30, 1993. She was the strength and heart of her family; for Helen, her family always came first.

She is survived by her three children, Philip C. "Butch" Patch, II, of Swanton, Debbie Foote and her husband Harold, and Nancy Patch and her husband Kevin Connelly, all of Enosburg Falls; three grandchildren, Joel Paradee, Philip C. "Chip" Patch, III, and Hannah Patch; four stepgrandchildren, Trish & Isaac Foote, and Seth & Jessie Marshall; one brother and his wife, Horace & Barbara Riley; one sister, Barbara Stone, all of East Fairfield; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle McDermott of Brattleboro and Jean Mayo and her husband Harvey of Enosburg Falls; several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband she was predeceased by four brothers, Walter, Francis, Robert & Philip "Dick" Riley.

Visiting hours will be held Monday from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Bakersfield.

MARGARET "SUE" RAINE

ST. ALBANS ­ Mrs. Margaret "Sue" Raine, age 59, died Friday morning, May 4, 2001, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care, following an extended illness.

She was born in Fairfax June 23, 1941, daughter of the late Daniel R. and Juanita E. (Callan) Morton. She was employed as a clerk at Blouin's IGA Store for several years and for 15 years operated Sue Raine's Day Care on Walnut Street. Sue was a member of the First Congregational Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit #1, and Women of the Moose Chapter #321. She was a volunteer for the St. Albans Skating Association, working mainly at the Jim Raine Snack Bar at Collins Perley Sports Center. She was a bingo worker at St. Mary's Parish Bingo Parties for over 20 years.

She married James E. Raine Jan. 18, 1969, he died June 10, 1991. They had one son, Daniel Raine. Besides Danny of Newport, she is survived by her two brothers, Richard Morton of Kenner, La., Daniel Morton of St. Albans; a sister, Frances LaRocque of Tacoma, Wash.; two special cousins, Carol Richard and Sally Mayes, several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Jimmy she was predeceased by her father Daniel in May of 1960, her mother Juanita in August of 1995, and her infant daughter Kathleen Raine in 1975.

Sue wanted to extend special appreciation to her neighbors Pat and Mark Austin for all their kindness and caring, and to Dr. Shackford, Sharon Patterson and Sue Stowe.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., an hour before the services. Interment will be in the Raine family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans VT 05478, or the Vermont Kidney Association, PO Box 244, Burlington, VT 05401. Arrangements are entrusted to the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

JOANNE MAY MARTIN

SWANTON -- Joanne May Martin, 67, a lifelong resident of this community died Friday morning, May 4, 2001, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

She was born in Swanton, Jan. 21, 1934, the daughter of the late Lawrence and Rosamond (Favero) Lovley. She attended St. Anne's Academy and graduated from Swanton High School. She was the former owner and operator of J&J Taxi for many years and also was a driver for the Champlain Valley Community Action.

Joanne is survived by five sons and their spouses, Floyd and Tina Farrell of Swanton, Leonard J. and Rose Martin of Alburg, Ronald Martin and his companion Sue Bohannon of Swanton and Edwin Martin of Swanton; one daughter, Sally Ann Martin of Swanton; a brother, Lawrence Lovely of St. Albans; and a sister, Shari Lee Lovely of Swanton; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Joanne also leaves her longtime companion John Leduc of Swanton.

She was predeceased by a son, Allen Michael and Marty Lee.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. At Joanne's request, calling hours will be private for family members only.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home.

ELWYN DICKINSON ABELL

ROANOKE, VA. -- Elwyn Dickinson Abell, (ED) 84 of Roanoke, Va., died May 1, 2001. Born in St. Albans, Vt. on Oct. 12, 1916, he was the son of the late Minnie Dickinson Abell and Melvin Fred Abell. Elwyn grew up in St. Albans. He graduated from BFA in 1934 and the University of Vermont in 1939.

He married Mary Scouten on Aug. 22, 1943. He is survived by his devoted wife Mary, a daughter Patricia Abell Wright of Salem, Va., and a son Thomas E. Abell of Macon, Ga.

He is survived by a brother Melvin V. Abell of St. Albans, Vt. and a sister, Estelie Abell McWilliams of Swanton, Vt.

He was predeceased by two sisters, Madeline Abell and Charlene Abell Keseberg. He has three grandchildren and three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Elwyn worked for General Electric as an electrical engineer in Schenectady, N.Y. and moved to Roanoke, Va. in 1956. He worked at G.E. for 42 years and retired in 1978. He worked as a trouble shooter on contactors for factories and in the fields across the United States.

There will be a memorial service on May 12, 2001, at 1 p .m. It will be held at Shenandoah Baptist Church in Roanoke, Va. Contributions may be made in his memory to Camp Eagle for children sent to: Shenandoah Baptist Church, Williamson Road, Roanoke, VA 24012.
