RICHARD N. DESMARAIS
GRAND ISLE –Rick went to be with his father on Oct. 12, 2005. He was born on June 7, 1967, in Rhode Island, the son of Robert and Helen (Vanaui) Desmarais.

He was married to Betty Tebeau on Feb. 3, 1994, in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his mother, Helen Desautel; his brother, Robert Desmarais; his sister, Sherry Desmarais, and special nephews Jamie and Timmy, all of Florida. He also leaves his father and mother-in-laws, Bernard and Theresa Steady; his sister and brother-in-law, Susan and John Lawrence of Grand Isle; and many nieces and nephews.

Rick’s nephew, co-worker, fishing and hunting partner, Wade Lawrence, will surely miss him when these occasions come about.
Rick graduated from Daytona Beach Community College with a degree in Culinary Arts and loved cooking. He was employed at Chef’s Corners in Williston as a Soue` Chef and loved his profession as he would change every recipe he used. His love for fishing came close to his love of his favorite football team, the New England Patriots. When there was a game on, no one had to ask where Rick was. He was glued to the TV. He will also be remembered for his deep love for animals and their care.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to make them to the Grand Isle Rescue, P.O. Box 79, Grand Isle, Vt. 05458. These volunteers worked very hard caring for Rick’s needs.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.

MADELINE MARGARET (JARVIS) PEARO
ALBURG - Madeline Margaret (Jarvis) Pearo was born on Nov. 12, 1923, in Isle La Motte, to Wilbur and Catherine (Tusa) Jarvis.

She is survived by her husband, Roland Pearo; and children: Connie Boutin, Herbert Pearo and his wife Tawnia and Philip Pearo and his wife Aileen; grandchildren: Christopher Goodsell and his wife Teresa, Matthew Goodsell, Allen Goodsell and his wife Amanda, Jason Pearo and his mother Pauline, Zachary and Josh Pearo, Samantha and Derek Tedford; great-grandchildren: Alex, Dillon and Sophia Goodsell; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Doris Jarvis, Kenneth and Kay Jarvis and William Jarvis; her sisters, Velma Cameron and Theresa Hinman; many nieces and nephews; and Maddy’s special Uncle Tim.

Madeline was predeceased by her brother Floren Jarvis; sisters Shirley and Constance; mother-in-law, Nellie Bockus; brothers-in-law, Albert, Henry and Leonard Pearo and a very special Uncle Clifford and Aunt Ethel.

She attended Isle La Motte Elementary School and St. Michael’s High School in Montpelier. She was a lifelong member of St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church and an Auxiliary member of the American Legion, Creller-Landon Post 60 in Alburg. Madeline and her husband Roland owned and operated Pearo’s General Store for many years.

Madeline has been a wonderful mother and grandmother to her family. Everyone was always welcomed into her home. Many meals and good times were shared around her kitchen table by friends and family. Mother had a gift to lift you up when you were down and we always left her feeling much loved. For years her children have gathered there on Friday night to talk and laugh and enjoy the macaroni and cheese that only she could prepare. She has left us to join God’s Angels but we will carry her in our hearts. In her final days she has drawn us together with her great heart and left us stronger in that “Circle of Love.”

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at 2p.m. from St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Alburg Village. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Pearo family lot in St. Amadeus Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Friday, Oct. 14, 2005; from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Gifts in Madeline’s memory may be made to the Alburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, 4 Fire House Road, Alburg 05440.

LEE A. CLARK
ENOSBURG FALLS - Lee A. Clark, age 53, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at his home on Pearl St.

Lee was born May 3, 1952, in Lyndon, Vt., the son of the late Alden and Margaret (Leake) Clark

Lee was a resident of Vermont and New York most of his life and was employed as a laborer doing odd jobs, farming and roofing. He was a U.S Air Force Veteran. He enjoyed watching birds and most of all hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Laura and Charles Gervais Jr. of Enosburg Falls; two grandchildren, Lindsey and Dylan Donna of Enosburg Falls; a brother and his companion, Keith Clark and Jeanette Candles of Enosburg Falls; a sister and her husband, Judith and Roger Perry of Georgia.

A graveside service will be held Friday morning, Oct. 14, at 10 a.m. at the Berkshire Center Cemetery with Pastor Lyle Willey officiating. There will be no visiting hours.

JOHN P. JONES
SOUTH BURLINGTON - John P. Jones, 87, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 11, 2005, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.

John was born on Dec. 9, 1917, in Georgetown, Mass., the son of Alfred and Ethel (Adams) Jones. He married Rachael Little on July 29, 1939 in Newburyport, Mass.

John enlisted in the Navy and served aboard LST 571 in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He also served during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge he and Rachael settled in Wolfeboro, N.H. where he was employed as a Diesel Generator Engineer with the Electric Department for the Town of Wolfeboro. Mr. Jones was very active with the American Legion, Harriman-Hale Post 18 in Wolfeboro, N.H.

John loved travel, photography, and New England seafood. John moved to the Pines Senior Living Community in South Burlington in 2003 to be closer to his son and grandchildren.

He is survived by his son Stephen and his wife, Elizabeth of Milton; his grandchildren: Shannon Luzzatto and her husband, Capt. Matthew Luzzatto of Ft. Collins, Colo., Alanna Jones of Waltham, Mass., Sean Jones and his wife, Miranda of South Burlington, Vt., and Aubrey Jones of Milton; by his great-grandchildren: Andrew, Jacob, Zachary, Evan and Gregory; his sister-in-law, Ruth Jones of Georgetown, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his wife, Rachael, in 1988.

A graveside service will be held at the Ft. Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s name to the Macular Degeneration Association.

Arrangements were by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton, Vt.

CÉLESTE B. HORWEDEL
RUTLAND — The Funeral service for Céleste B. Horwedel, 49 of Rutland who died unexpectedly Sunday October 9, 2005 at the Rutland Regional Medical Center has been rescheduled for 4pm Friday at the Roadside Chapel Assembly of God, Town line Road, Rutland Town.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4-7pm at the Aldous Funeral Home.

Memorial contribution may be made to American Cancer Society, VT Division Inc., 121 Connor Way Ste 240, PO Box 1460, Williston, VT 05495.

ELISA ANN (OUELLETTE) JARING
SWANTON — The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005, at 2 p.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Father John J. Meagher, SSE was the celebrant and homilist. Imelda and John Tougas served as Ministers of the Altar as well as Eucharistic Ministers.

Music was provided by organist and soloist Mary Jo Gillilan. The White Funeral Pall was draped by Elisa’s two daughters, Jennifer and Katie Jaring. The Crucifix was then placed by her husband, Cornelis. The first reading from The Old Testament was proclaimed by nephew and godchild, Jason Ouellette and the second reading from The New Testament by family friend, Patti Rainville.

The Offertory Gifts were presented by nieces and nephews, Marissa Ouellette, Mikayla Sorrell, Dustin Benning and Josh Benning. Special Words of Remembrance were shared by Elisa’s husband Cornelis Jaring. A large guard of honor was formed by faculty, school directors, students and staff from the Highgate Elementary School and the Missisquoi Valley Union High School Boy’s Varsity Soccer Team.

Among the many other delegations in attendance were representatives from, Northwest Supervisory Union Office of the Superintendent of Schools, Missisquoi Valley Union High School including the School Board, Student Council, Class of 2007, Athletic Department and Girls Varsity Soccer Team, Bellows Free Academy-St. Albans Athletic Department, Mary S. Babcock and Swanton Central Schools, Franklin Elementary School, Sheldon Elementary School, Northern United, Rene J. Fournier Farm Equipment, Associates for Dental Care, Banknorth, Sticks & Stuff, O.C. McCuin and Sons, Swanton, Highgate, Franklin and Sheldon Town Offices, The Healing Circle, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, Franklin Rescue, Highgate Volunteer Fire Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Green Mountain Forest Products, Northwestern Medical Center, Fletcher Allen Health Care, Office of Doctor Judith Olin, Office of Doctor Milton Robison, Neal Speer Construction, Shaggy’s Snack Bar, Fairfax Pharmacy, Franklin County Home Health Agency, Hannaford’s Super Markets and Grand Union Family Markets. Interment will take place later in Saint Peter’s Roman Catholic Cemetery Vergennes.

The bearers were Elisa’s two sons, Keesy and Nathan Jaring. Following the liturgy a Bereavement luncheon was served at the My-T-Fine II Restaurant in Highgate Springs hosted by Mrs. Nancy Paquette and staff. The Jaring family would like to give very special thanks to the medical staff on Shepardson 4 at Fletcher Allen Health Care and also to Doctor Judith Olin and Staff for all of their love, care and support during Elisa’s illness.

JENNIE MASON TAYLOR
DREXEL, N.C. — Jennie Mason Taylor, 55, of Drexel died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005 at her residence following a period of declining health.

Jennie was born on July 22, 1950 to the late Mahlon V. Taylor Jr. and Etta Hemingway Taylor of Richford, Vt. Jennie formerly worked for Microsoft in Charlotte and with the Burke County Friends for Animals, Nature Conservancy.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Swabsky: three half-sisters, Mimi Teghtsoonian of Massachusetts, Tekla Taylor Lagway of Ohio and Pat Taylor of Washington D.C., and one half-brother, Vincent Taylor.

To Jennie's friends and family who gave their support, love and caring throughout her illness, the family extends their sincere, heartfelt gratitude.

Memorials may be made to the Burke County Hospice and Palliative Care, 1721 Enon Rd. Valdese, N.C. 28690 or Burke County Friends for Animals P.O. Box 1884. Morganton, N.C. 28680. Heritage Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

BETTY J. GAGNE
WALES, Mass. - Betty J. Gagne, beloved wife of Fernand R. Gagne, passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2005, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 11, 1938, in Richford, the daughter of the late Robert and Marion (Tatro) Gendron.

She was a Cub Scout leader, was an active sports mom, an avid Red Sox fan, an avid bowler scoring a high triple of 752. She was employed by the Journal Inquirer.

Besides her husband of 49 years she is survived by her two sons, Robert Gagne and Robin Gagne both of Wales, Mass.; her grandson, Christopher; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Diane Gendron of Montgomery, Alfred and Carolyn Gendron of Richford, and Leo and Polly Gendron of Donalds, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a son, Armand Gagne; her siblings, Irene Carr, Marie Gendron, and twins, Jeannette and Alfred Gendron.

Funeral services were held at the Burke-Fortin Funeral Home in Rockville, Conn.

CE’LESTE B. HORWEDEL
RUTLAND - Ce’leste B. Horwedel, 49 of Rutland, died unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 9, 2005, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born on Dec. 21, 1955, in Manchester, N.H., the daughter of Maurice A. and Violette M. (Desrochers) Therrien.

Mrs. Horwedel graduated from the Rutland High School in 1973 and the University of Vermont in 1977.

She was a former resident of Burlington and St. Albans where she had been employed by the St. Albans High School. In 1999 she relocated back to Rutland where she was employed by the Rutland City School Department at the Rutland High School and the Rutland Intermediate School as an Art Teacher.

Mrs. Horwedel enjoyed her students, gardening and was a talented potter and 3 dimensional artist.

She reconnected with Mark F. Horwedel at their 20th high school reunion and on Aug. 9, 2003 they were married.

Survivors include her husband and parents each being of Rutland; her daughter, Elise Pecor of St. Albans; step-son, Christopher Horwedel of Rutland; three sisters: Denise Therrien of West Virginia, Susan Therrien and Michelle Therrien both of Rutland; her brother, Marc Therrien of Swanzey, N.H.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Roadside Chapel Assembly of God, Town line Road, Rutland Town.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home.

JASKA B. SHEPERD
RICHFORD - Jaska B. Sheperd, age 63, passed away unexpectedly Monday morning, Oct. 10, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with her loving family at her side.

She was born Jan. 30, 1942, in Richford, the daughter of the late Richard and Lucille (Cook) Brown.

Jaska was employed at Boise - Cascade in Sheldon Springs, as a speech therapist at Richford Elementary School and finally at Peerless in St. Albans retiring in 2003. She was an avid supporter of the Humane Society and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 12 of Richford. She enjoyed working in her flower garden. She also enjoyed doing crafts (quilting, pottery, stenciling bird houses) with her sisters. Most of all she loved the time she pent with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Randy Sheperd and his wife Sheila, and Eric Sheperd and his companion Tammy Sweet of Richford; her grandchildren: Chazz, Justin, Sabastion, and Jett Sheperd, Cody, Casey, and Connor Sheperd; her sister, Carolyn Reilly of Barre; a brother-in-law, Jerry Clark of Richford; two nephews, Murray Reilly of Barre and Atlee Clark of Florida; her companion, Mike Murray of Richford; several friends, including Asa Wilson Sr., Jessica Jacobs and Shelly Bonk; and her faithful dog, Tyke. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her sister, Vicki L. Clark.

A graveside memorial service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Hillside cemetery in Richford with Pastor Lyle Willey officiating. There will be no visiting hours.
