HIGHGATE FALLS - Funeral Services were held Friday, Oct. 14, 2005, at 11 a.m. from The Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses on Vermont Route 7 in Swanton Town. Mr. Allen Marco Officiated.
Among the delegations in attendance were representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, including the U.S. Custom’s Service, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, Highgate Volunteer Fire Department, Highgate Center Cemetery Commission, retired employees of the former George Yette Bag Company and many friends and neighbors from the Highgate Falls Community.
Interment followed in the Highgate Center Cemetery with Mr. Marco assisted by Mr. Clarence Holmes reading the committal prayers.
MADELINE MARGARET (JARVIS) PEARO
ALBURGH - The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at 2 p.m. from St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE was the celebrant and homilist. Assisting as Deacon was The Reverend Mr. Alan Vincelette. Sister Mary Anne Gour, FCSHJ and Mrs. Beth Savage served as Ministers of the Altar. Music was provided by soloist, Maurice Gauthier accompanied by organist, Carol Pellerin.
A large guard of honor and funeral procession escort was provided by members of the Swanton Sector of the United States Border Patrol. The White Funeral Pall was draped over Madeline’s casket by her children, Connie Boutin, Herbert Pearo and Philip Pearo. Madeline’s children also together placed the crucifix. The Old Testament Reading was proclaimed by family friend, David Fitzgerald and The New Testament Reading by daughter, Connie Boutin. The Offertory Gifts were presented by her brothers, Ken and Richard Jarvis; sisters, Theresa Hinman and Velma Cameron; daughters-in-law, Tawnia Pearo, Aileen Pearo, Pauline Pearo, Teresa Goodsell; and granddaughter, Amanda Goodsell. Following communion Special Words of Remembrance were shared by sons, Herbert and Philip Pearo; grandson, Christopher Goodsell; and brother, Ken Jarvis.

Interment followed in the Pearo family lot in St. Amadeus Cemetery with Father Boucher reading the committal prayers.
The bearers, all grandsons, were Christopher, Matthew, and Allen Goodsell; Jason, Josh and Zachary Pearo and Derek Tedford; and Jeremy Boutin.
Following The Prayers of Committal a Bereavement Luncheon was served in the St. Amadeus Parish Center hosted by Maurice Gauthier and members of the parish.
On Friday evening members of the American Legion Auxiliary, Creller-Landon, Post 60 of Alburgh conducted their Vigil Service with Susan Demar, President; Betty Lockerby, Chaplain; Georgia Morey, First Vice President; and also participating were Bertha Cheney, Joyce Ladd and Toni Soule.
DEBORAH K. BISSON
ST. ALBANS - Deborah Kaye Bisson, age 37, died unexpectedly as a result of an automobile accident, Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, in Danville, Vt. She was born Aug. 12, 1968, in Oceanside, Calif., daughter of Joseph Bisson and Sandra Nuttall. She previously worked at Price Chopper in St. Albans as the General Merchandise Manager. She enjoyed reading, country music and spending time with her daughter, Samantha.
Deborah is survived by her daughter, Samantha Amerio; her mother, Sandra Nuttall and her husband, Jim, all of St. Albans; her father, Joseph Bisson and his wife, Donna of Las Vegas, Nev.; her sister, Angel Hurd and her husband, Allen of Benson, Vt.; her maternal grandmother, Pearl Evans of Evansville, Ind.; her former husband, Anthony Amerio; and her companion, Todd Gilbert, both of St. Albans; aunts and uncles to include Rick and Marshia Evans of Evansville, Ind., Donald and Sherry Bisson of Las Vegas, Nev., Pauline and George Murphy, Doris and Roger Fowler all of California; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Oscoe Evans; and paternal grandparents, Henry and Cecile Bisson.
Funeral services will be private. Memorials may be made in Deborah’s memory to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

JEAN E. JUSTUS
PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Jean E. Justus, age 67, passed away Sept. 29, 2005, at her home in Plymouth, Mich. Her loving family was by her side. She was born Aug. 23, 1938, in St. Albans, the daughter of Maurice P. and Claire K. (O’Brien) Bushey.
Jean received a nursing degree from the Jeanne Mance School of Nursing in Burlington. Jean was well known by all as a very compassionate person with a love of life and helping others. She touched the lives of everyone who knew her and enriched the lives of her many friends and family. During her career as a registered nurse she was consistently recognized for her outstanding patient care. Her career included positions with Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York, where she was assigned to care for numerous VIP patients, including King Faisal of Saudi Arabia and General Douglas MacArthur.
During the Vietnam War, she volunteered to serve as a nurse in the U.S. Air Force as a First Lieutenant, caring for wounded members of all of the branches of U.S. military.
On June 27, 1970, she married Carlyle E. Justus, with whom she had served in the Air Force. She was a loving wife and mother and they were together for 35 years. During his career as an international banker they traveled throughout the United States and numerous foreign countries. Her favorite locations were the Green Mountains of her beloved Vermont, and the beautiful country of Bermuda.
Jean is survived by her husband and their two children, Lisa and her husband, Kurt, David and his wife, Daya; and two much adored grandchildren, Jack and David. She is also survived by her mother, Claire Bushey; her brother, Robert Bushey and his wife, Shirley, of St. Albans; a sister, Priscilla Takayama and her husband, Wesley, of Nashua, N.H.; her aunt and Godmother, Yvonne (Bushey) Cross; her aunt, Colleen (O’Brien) Jaiber and Elanor O’Brien of St. Albans; her aunt, Edwilda O’Brien of Albuquerque, New Mexico; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Maurice Bushey, in 1981; her brother, Richard Bushey; and a sister, Maureen Healy, both in 1999.
Upon the birth of her children she became a full-time mother and was devoted to them. She was a role model, friend and advocate for them throughout her life. She participated in their education by developing art and other learning programs for the Catholic schools they attended.
Throughout her life, Jean continuously sought personal and spiritual growth. She was invited to become one of the first Covenant Members of the Wheaton Franciscan Sisters, Daughters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, one of a limited number of married women with a family to be so honored as a non-vowed member to share in the life of the religious community. The community is guided by the healing mission of St. Francis in creating nursing and other caring communities.
Her love of life, laughter and caring spirit will live on in the memories of all who knew her. The following quote in a letter from one of her dear friends, near the end of Jean’s life, captures her essence: “Please, tell Jean how much I love her. I think of her very, very often and remember all the wonderful times we had together. I’ll never forget her beautiful eyes - so full of wonder and so wise. Never in my life have I had a friend with such a beautiful mind and heart.” Jean will be deeply missed by her family and friends and their memories of her will be cherished.
A memorial mass was held for her on Oct. 1 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Plymouth, Mich., where she and her husband have been members.
A second memorial mass will be held for Jean at 11 a.m. on Oct. 22 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Albans, Vt., the church of her family for generations. Her ashes will be interred at the Justus family lot at Holy Cross Cemetery in St. Albans. That will include a military honor guard in recognition of her service in the U.S. Air Force.
At 1 p.m., Jean’s extended family and friends are invited to join her family for a luncheon, graciously hosted by the members of the St. Mary’s Church, at their Parish Center in St. Albans to celebrate their lives and hers.

FRED PHILIAS LAMOTHE
SWANTON - Fred Philias Lamothe, 88, of Swanton, went to be with his Lord, Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City.
Fred was born Sept. 14, 1917, in Georgia, Vt., the son of the late Wilfred and Clara (Rock) Lamothe. He was married to Marie May Bechard on July 5, 1941, in St. Albans.
Fred was a dairy farmer all of his life and is survived by his wife, Marie, of 64 years; five sons: Norman and Monique Lamothe of Plantation, Fla., Raymond and Rita Lamothe of Manning, S.C., Armand and Karen Lamothe of Swanton, Edmund Lamothe and partner Diana Sartwell of St. Albans and Edward and Tammy Lamothe of Swanton; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Clement of Watertown, Conn., Paul of St. Albans, Henry of St. Albans, and his sister, Rita Peron of Georgia. He also leaves brothers-in-law, Jean Paul Bechard, Father Bernard J. Bechard SSE, of Sheldon Springs; sisters-in-law, Theresa Lamothe, Kay Lamothe, Lorraine Laba, Estelle Favero, Fernand Vosburg and Theresa Gervais; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his mother and father; brothers: Robert, Leo, Andre, Jean-Louis; and a sister, Gertrude.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton Village. Mr. Lamothe’s brother-in-law, Father Bernard J. Bechard, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Lamothe family lot in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

THELMA ANNIE TEE MAUNDCOTE
Thelma Annie Maundcote, nee Tee, died in the Verger Fleurie Residence in Frelighsburg, Quebec on the morning of the ninth of October 2005 after several years of suffering from diabetes.
Thelma was born on the prairies of Alberta in 1922 and was baptized in the Cathedral of Edmonton. She grew up in Toronto and graduated from Parkdale Collegiate Institute. After the outbreak of war, she was an early recruit to the WRCNS as a sick bay "Tiffie, " and later became a Leading Seaman Sick Berth Attendant. She was mentioned in dispatches for her service to sailors injured in the torpedoing of their vessel.
She married Wilfrid Maundcote Carter in Newfoundland where she was serving in the Royal Canadian Naval Hospital. After her discharge from the Navy she joined him in England where her first child, Paula, was born. She was Sacristan at the National Shrine of Our Lady at Walsingham, returned to Canada in 1948 and set up a family home in Winnipeg.
Her husband, Wilfrid, was commissioned in the Royal Canadian Navy, and she moved with him from appointment to appointment, living in almost all the Canadian provinces. During this time she served in several homes for the aged and was active as leader in both the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts of Canada. When Wilfrid retired from the Navy, she entered Richmond College in Ontario and received her Bachelor's Degree and her Licentiate at Wycliffe College in Toronto, followed by a Master of Theology Degree in the School of Theology of the University of Toronto. She had at the same time gained a Certificate in Early Childhood Education from Ontario's new Centennial College.
Thelma served as Pastoral Assistant in the Church of the Master in Scarborough for two years and on the teaching staff of a major Child Care facility until the family moved to Quebec. Living just north of the border and not bi-lingual, she joined the Episcopal Church in Vermont, serving parishes St. Matthew’s in Enosburg and St. Ann’s in Richford, as well as residential retirement homes in the vicinity.
She is survived by her husband, Wilfrid; and her children: Paula, Antony, Basil and Damien.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Le Sieur of Granby. A memorial service will be held on Saturday morning, Oct. 22, at 10:30 in St. Mathew’s Church, Enosburg Falls, Vt. where she served for many years.
Her wish was not to have flowers, but rather support of the Leprosy Relief Canada, in Montreal.
CHARLOTTE POWELL ADAMS
SWANTON - Mrs. Charlotte Powell Adams, 83, a longtime area resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin following a long illness with her family at her side. She was born in St. Albans on June 14, 1922, the daughter of the late George S. and Blanche (Edwards) Powell.
She grew up in Vermont, attended school in Jericho, and graduated from Bristol High School in 1940. On Aug. 30, 1941, she married Merritt J. Adams, who predeceased her. After working for a number of years in Connecticut, they returned to Vermont and made their home in Swanton, where they raised their three children. Charlotte was actively involved in her children's education and was instrumental in the formation of the Swanton PTA.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Carol A. and Patrick Giroux of Montpelier; two sons and their wives, James P. and Sherry Adams of Belvidere and Thomas E. and Cynthia Adams of Holland, Vt.; four grandchildren: Ruth Adams Perkins and her husband, Michael, Walker Adams, Hilary Giroux and Blythe Giroux; a brother, Bernard L. Powell; and two nephews, Bill Sweetser and Bill Charron. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Marguerite Daman and Elizabeth Marshall.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2005, at 3 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main St., St. Albans. Interment will be in the family lot at Jeffersonville Village Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.
JANE B. FITZGERALD
ATTLEBORO, Mass./ ST. ALBANS, Vt. –– Jane B. Fitzgerald, 93, of Pleasant Street, formerly of St. Albans, Vt., a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died Thursday, Oct. 13, 2005, at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home in Attleboro, Mass. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert G. Fitzgerald, who died in 1977.
Born in Swanton, Vt. on Nov. 16, 1911, Mrs. Fitzgerald was a daughter of the late Damas and Laura (Campbell) Boudreau.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was raised in St. Albans and was a graduate of Holy Angels Grammar School and Holy Angels Commercial Course.
Years ago, Mrs. Fitzgerald was employed as a stenographer at St. Albans City Hall. A communicant of Holy Angels Church, Mrs. Fitzgerald was a homemaker, a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion, and lifelong resident of St. Albans, Vt. Currently a resident of Attleboro for the past eight years, Mrs. Fitzgerald was a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed her family and was loved by all.
Mrs. Fitzgerald is survived by a daughter, Mary-Ellen Vandal and her husband, Donald of Attleboro; a son, Terence S. Fitzgerald, MD and his wife, Jacqueline of Darien, Conn.; six grandchildren: Timothy S. Fitzgerald, Carrie Lee Fitzgerald, Shannon F. Nelson, John G. Vandal, Kimberly V. Aguiar, and Laura V. Nathan; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Donat, Armand, Lionel, Alcid, and Francis Boudreau, and Doris O’Connell.
A funeral will be conducted on Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at 8 a.m. from the Duffy-Poule Funeral Home, 20 Peck St., Attleboro. The funeral will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Attleboro, celebrated by the Rev. Msgr. Daniel F. Hoye. At the request of the family, visiting hours are respectively omitted.
Burial will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005 at 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Cemetery, St. Albans, Vt.

GLORIA ELIZABETH MULLEN
WILDER, Vt. - Gloria Elizabeth Mullen, 88 years old, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at Valley Terrace Assisted Living, with her husband, Jack by her side.
Gloria was born in the Bronx in New York City on Sept. 20, 1917. She graduated from Kathryn Gibbs in Boston, Mass. in 1938. Gloria and Jack were married on June 28, 1940, in Melrose, Mass. They moved to St. Albans, Vt. in 1953 where Gloria taught high school in the nearby town of Franklin. She was active in the Autone Club, Women’s Republican Organization, Northwest Medical Center Auxiliary and the Council on the Arts.
She loved being outdoors gardening, skiing and boating on Lake Champlain. Her passion was reading; she was rarely without book in hand.
Gloria is survived by her husband of 66 years, Jack Mullen; her son, Richard Mullen of Sarasota, Fla.; her daughter, Gretchen Stoddard of Norwich, Vt.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
There will be no funeral services. The family will celebrate Gloria’s Life at her daughter’s home in Norwich on Saturday. Pastor Douglas Moore of the Congregational Church of Norwich will attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Upper Valley Haven Family Shelter, at 745 Hartford Ave., White River Jct., Vt. 05001. Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction assisted with arrangements.
