MARLIES KRUSCH
WILLISTON - Marlies Schurich Krusch died on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston, at the age of 98.
A tiny, feisty lady of 100 lbs., she was a lifelong liberal, politically and socially active, and a lover of children, nature, flowers, gardens, classical music, art, good literature, and museums. She was a pacifist who lived through two world wars and the Great Depression, and was thrifty and frugal, but very generous with caring for and feeding others. Her family and friends greatly valued her ability to listen, her nurturing spirit, her unselfish devotion to others, and her sharing of wisdom from her lifetime of experience. She was a wonderful cook, who prepared a German New Year’s Day banquet for her family until she was 96. She kept house in her own apartment until a few months ago, delighting in preparing “kaffee klatch” for her friends and family. Her love of life, her sense of humor, and her warm heart will be long remembered by all who knew her.
She was born on April 7, 1907, in Berlin, Germany. She came to the United States in 1927, and married Herbert Krusch (also an immigrant from Germany) on May 9, 1930. Both became citizens of the U.S. After their son Peter was born in 1931, they returned to Germany and their families for a few years, barely escaping Nazi Germany when Hitler came to power, after her father, husband, and brother were arrested for running an illegal liberal press.
Returning to New York City at the height of the depression, they lived several years in a cold water tenement on the East Side, with the ever-resourceful Herbert supporting his family by any job available, including trucking coal from a bootleg mine in Pennsylvania. Eventually, he entered real estate development, and moved his family to Long Island, N.Y., then Rochelle Park, N.J., and Hackensack, N.J. In Hackensack, she converted a Victorian house to a rooming house, dispensing mothering, nurturing, and good advice to tenants ranging from medical students to derelicts. When she and her husband retired, they lived in Croton-on-Hudson. After Herbert’s death on July 16, 1985, she moved to Vermont to be near her son, who built her a house on his farm in Cambridge.
For the last 10 years of her life, she lived in Burlington, for six years at The Pines Senior Living. When her heart began to fail in June, she moved to the Vermont Respite House in Williston, where she was surrounded by the kindness and peace of the staff and the place, visited daily by her family and friends. She chose to donate her body to medical science.
When she was 83 and began having heart problems, a bypass gave her another 15 years of life, and the opportunity to know her great-grandchildren. The family is very grateful to Dr. Terrien for his medical care, and for successfully supporting her need for the operation to a health insurance system which initially stated that she was “too old” for so expensive a medical procedure.
She is survived by her son, Peter A. Krusch and his wife, Sally Laughlin of Cambridge; her grandson, Ernest Krusch; and great-grandson, Sean of Cambridge; her granddaughter, Nancy Schurich (Krusch) Spier; and great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ethan of Underhill; and her grandson, Gregory Krusch of Fort Collins, Colo.
For those wishing to, donations in her memory may go to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vt. 05495.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m. at the A.W. Rich Funeral Home, Essex Chapel to which all of her friends are invited.
Arrangements are by John D. Workman of the A.W. Rich Funeral Home, Essex Chapel, 57 Main St., Essex Jct.
