THENA MICHELLE FORTIER
ESSEX JUNCTION - Thena Michelle Fortier, 36, of 42 Lamell Avenue in Essex Junction, died at home with her family by her side on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, following a long illness.
Thena was born in St. Albans on Jan. 12, 1969, the daughter of Albert and Linda (Prevost) Burnor. She graduated from Rice Memorial High School in 1987 and from the Fanny Allen School of Nursing. She was married at Holy Family Catholic Church in Essex Junction in 1993 to Daniel A. Fortier. She was also a former parishioner at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Williston.
Thena was a volunteer at the Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1987 and operated a day care for several years in the early 90s.
She enjoyed animals, horseback riding, and gardening and loved the ocean and caring for children and was an avid prankster.
Thena is survived by her husband, Daniel Fortier; her children, Daniel, Jessie, and Alexander; her parents, Albert and Linda Burnor; her sisters, Lisa LaFreniere and her husband, Gerald, and Carrie Wicker and her husband, Robert; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Darrell and Mary Fortier; her brothers-in-law, Darrell Fortier Jr. and his wife, Rena, and David Fortier; nephews and nieces, Gerry and Christopher LaFreniere, Amy Tinker, Scott and Mike Graham, Shawn Fortier and Jennifer Fortier; and several aunts and uncles.
Thena's family offers their sincere thanks to Dr. Zail Berry, the VNA and staff at the Adult Day Care in Williston.
Graveside services will be held today (Aug. 22) at noon at the St. Albans Bay Cemetery in St. Albans.

EDWARD STEBBINS MANN
WOLLASTON, Mass. / SOUTH HERO, Vt. - Dr. Edward Stebbins Mann, of South Hero, and Wollaston, Mass., longtime president of Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Mass., died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at the age of 96.
Dr. Mann went to ENC in 1925 as a 16-year-old freshman and remained to become president and president emeritus. As a student, he helped build the school’s first baseball field, and then raised money for and personally helped dig out the foundation for the school’s first gymnasium. As president from 1948 to 1970, he was involved in the construction of seven major buildings including a library, three residence halls, a science building, a religion building, and a campus center/student union building.
He graduated from ENC in 1929 with a degree in mathematics and immediately joined the college faculty. He earned his MA in mathematics at Boston University in 1932. While at ENC he taught mathematics and physics, was dean of men, business manager, assistant to the president and vice-president. He was elected president of ENC in 1948, was awarded a doctor of laws degree by Northwest Nazarene College in 1949, and a doctor of divinity degree by the University of Vermont in 1966.
Later in his career, Dr. Mann served the International Church of the Nazarene. He was elected as president of the General Board of the Church of the Nazarene in 1966. In 1970, he was appointed executive secretary of the denomination’s Department of Education in Kansas City, with oversight of eight colleges in the US, one in Canada and one in Great Britain. In 1983, he returned to Quincy to live and was given the title of president emeritus of Eastern Nazarene College. He was active in the City of Quincy, serving as an elected member of the Quincy School Committee for 10 years. He was a member of many church, community and professional organizations and was recognized for his distinguished service to Quincy.
He was born in Waterville on Sept. 25, 1908, son of the late Merritt H. and Cornelia Lois Mann, and graduated from Cambridge High School in Jeffersonville. He married his college sweetheart, Cora Herrschaft, of Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1932. She predeceased him in 1988. He married Katherine Angell, of Quincy, in 1989. An avid sports fan, he often attended college sporting events at ENC and faithfully followed the Red Sox. He loved to vacation at his beloved cottage, Hearthside, on the shore of Lake Champlain.
He is survived by his second wife, Katherine; four sons: Edward of Plymouth, Mass., Merritt of Pembroke, Mass., Robert of Arlington, Texas, Richard of Quincy, Mass.; three step-children: Gary Angell of California, Gordon Angell of Connecticut and Katherine Angell of New York; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Roger Mann; and three sisters: Gwendolyn Mann, Genevieve Mann and Marguerite Nielson, all of Waterville; and a large and loving extended family.
Visiting hours in Vermont will be held at the Waterville Church of the Nazarene today, Aug. 22, from 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Waterville Church of the Nazarene on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 1 p.m. A committal service will follow in the family lot in Mountain View Cemetery, Waterville. A memorial service will be held at ENC at a later date.

SKYLAR JAY (KOSA) BOMBARD
ST. ALBANS - Skylar Jay (Kosa) Bombard, 9-month-old son of Shawn Bombard and Jessica Kosa, and little brother to Elijah Bombard, died unexpectedly Friday, Aug. 19, 2005. Skylar was born in St. Albans on Nov. 2, 2004.
Along with his loving Mom, Dad and brother, Skylar leaves his grandparents, Phillip and Claudette Kosa of South Burlington, Steve and Sue Santor of Highgate Center, and Shirley and Marshall Blaise Jr. of Milton; his great-grandparents, Theresa Ward of Winooski, and Joanne Sweeney of Burlington; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins who loved him very much.
Skylar's short life blessed us with his infectious smile and baby blue eyes and a curiosity to explore the world around him. Swept so quickly from our lives, but not before leaving footprints on "ALL" our hearts forever.
Funeral services for Skylar will be celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at 10 a.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home in Winooski.

BETTY J. MARSHIA
EAST FAIRFIELD - Mrs. Betty J. Marshia, age 63, died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at the Haven Health Care Facility after a lengthy illness. She was born Oct. 3, 1941, daughter of the late George and Fannie (Corey) Stanhope. She married Donald Marshia on Sept. 26, 1961.
Betty was a cashier for numerous stores, operated the Willow Crossing Diner for a few years and helped her husband Donald in the operations of Marshia Electric, retiring in 1995. Betty enjoyed CB radio, and mostly she watched and cared for the birds and squirrels and many of natures critters from her home.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; special friends, Ronald Gagnon of West Enosburg, and Donald Gagnon of Ocean City Fla.; her canine companion, Pugger and her feathered friend, Dooder; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, and several brothers and sisters.
A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at 10 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in the Bradley Cemetery in Fairfield. There are no visiting hours.

ANTHONY RALPH MULHERON
SWANTON - I, A. Ralph Mulheron, passed on to my next phase of life Thursday evening, Aug. 18, 2005. I will be joining my wife Ramona, who went ahead of me on April 27, 1999, to prepare a place for me, just as she had always done for the 50 years that we were married. I will also be with my mother, father, sisters and brother, and other relatives and friends who have gone before me.
I will be leaving behind a very wonderful and loving family, including Linda Mulheron and her daughter Dawn, Karen, Darwin, Marc and his wife Liza, and Michael and his wife Emily Longway; Colleen, Hal, Namath and Brandy Boardman and Brandy’s companion, Marc Tomasik; Melody, David, Jesse and Luke and his wife Gina LeClair; Cindy Jo and John Reilly; as well as great-grandchildren, Haley, Kaleb, Kiera, Ella Rose, Zander and Marshall. Also a brother and his wife, Ezra (Zing) and Lorraine Mulheron; and a sister and her husband, Rae and Gerry Barney.
Also gone before me, my brother, Arthur Mulheron; and sisters, Mildred (Mag) Brennan, Hazel Allen and Harriet Rocheleau.
I am also leaving many nieces and nephews who are dear to me and whom I love very much. I will be there in spirit at all their future family gatherings. There are also many friends that I proudly and fondly remember who I have met during my lifetime, my work, and my military career.
I graduated from Swanton High School in 1946, married in 1948 and pursued a work career primarily in the electrical field that led me to jobs with Union Carbide, Fonda, General Dynamics Astronautics, Goodrich Construction and retired from IBM in 1987. In between jobs I did electrical contracting with my brother Zing.
Paralleling my working career I pursued a military career by joining the United States Marine Corps fresh out of high school. I was discharged as a Corporal from the Marine Corps. Institute in Washington, D.C. in 1948. I then joined an Infantry Army Reserve Unit in 1950 and was assigned as a Master Sergeant in heavy weapons training. In 1959 I transferred to the United States Navy Seabees as a Chief Electrician. I was fortunate enough to hold many positions within the Battalion including, Training Chief, Operations Chief and Command Senior Chief. Our unit was activated in 1968 for a tour in Vietnam. While serving in Danang East I was Planning and Estimating Chief for all electrical and mechanical projects. In 1969 I returned to Mobile Construction Battalion 27 and retired in 1983. During my thirty-five plus years associated with the military I met many people who I was proud to serve with and many others who I am proud of now for the job they are doing.
I would like to request that all friends and family, who attend my funeral, wear their uniforms or some way show that they are or have been in the service. I would be honored, and it would show the community just how many people have done their part for their country.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, Aug. 22, 2004, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in the Mulheron family lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

ETHAN EDWARD BISER
ST. ALBANS - Ethan E. Biser, infant son of George Edward and Jennifer (Thomas) Biser IV, passed away unexpectedly from natural causes, early Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center. He was born in St. Albans on June 11, 2005.
Survivors include his parents, George and Jennifer of St. Albans; his three brothers: Devon Bushey and Parker and Tyler Forsyth; his sister, Abbigail Biser; his maternal grandparents, Richard and Beth Thomas of St. Albans; his paternal grandparents, George and Wanda Biser Jr. of Hagerstown, Md.; his maternal great-grandparents, Frederick and Jean Thomas Jr. of St. Albans; his maternal great-grandmother, Eunice Lucas Church and her husband, Earl of Sarasota, Fla.; his paternal great-grandmothers, Claire Nelson of Needmore, Pa. and Mable Ann Biser of Frederick, Md.; his aunts, Angela Cassidy and her husband, Corey, Janis Tuner, Sara Biser and Clara "Joie" Adams; his uncle, Dustin Biser; several cousins; and a special friend, Michael Hoague. Ethan was predeceased by his maternal great-grandfather, Richard C. Lucas; his paternal grandfather, Kent Boucher; and his paternal great-grandfathers, George Biser Sr. and John Nelson.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug. 22, 2005, at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church on Church Street with the Reverends Judy Kennedy and James MacIntyre officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Greenwood Cemetery. Ethan's family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.

JOSEPH JOHN LESSARD, SR.
RICHFORD - Joseph John Lessard Sr., age 69, husband of Ivy (Jackson) Lessard, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans with his family at his side.
He was born Aug. 10, 1936, in White Plains, N.Y. the son of the late William and Trajana (Blais) Lessard.
He was a resident of Manchester, Conn. most of his life where he was self-employed as a carpenter and also worked for Orlando Annulli Construction Co. In 1984 he moved to Richford where he continued his work as a carpenter. He was a member of All Saints Catholic Church in Richford and was a 3rd and 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council 2610 of Richford. He enjoyed playing the organ and accordion, listening to music, dancing and camping. He also was very active in working Bingo for the Church and the K of C.
He is survived by his wife, Ivy Lessard of Richford, they were married March 7, 1986; his children: Lynnette Jacobsen and her husband, George of Madison, Conn., Karen Lessard and her companion Stephen Liteplo of Manchester, Conn., Joseph J. Lessard Jr. of Manchester, Conn., Joyce Halloran and her husband Michael of Ellington, Conn., and Diane Lessard and her husband Michael Hornat of Manchester, Conn.; his stepchildren: Audrey Holmes and her husband Gordy of Calgary, Alberta, Thomas Gendron of Richford, Diane Burnham and her husband Murlyen of Glen Sutton, Quebec; his grandchildren: Jacqueline and Keri Halloran, Nichole Nall, and Chantal Madore; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Kayla Nall; five step-grandchildren: Patrick, Ryan, Shauna, Vanessa and Corey; one brother and his wife, Rene and Catherine Lessard of Grimsby, Ontario; and one sister, Rita Plante of Richford. Besides his parents he was predeceased by one sister, Pauline Guillmette; and a brother-in-law, Bert Plante.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at 11 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Richford with Rev. Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in the Berkshire Center Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 140 Main St., Richford.

THOMAS C. BARNHART
Thomas C. Barnhart, 85, a longtime resident of Rutland, died Wednesday morning, Aug. 17, 2005, at Our House Too, following a brief illness. He was born on Jan. 25, 1920, in Andes, N.Y., the son of Ernest and Mary (Chamberlain) Barnhart.
As a child he was raised in Middletown, N.Y., attending local schools. Following graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the European and African Theater of operations. He was the recipient of the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars and, for injuries received the Purple Heart.
Following his discharge, he enrolled at Simmons Institute of Funeral Service in Syracuse, N.Y. Following graduation in 1946, he went to work for the Leo F. Kearns Funeral Homes of New York City.
He was married to Anne Marie Terenzini on April 17, 1948, in Rutland.
In 1952, he moved to Rutland and purchased the Aldous Funeral Home, located at 134 Church Street, and in 1960, relocated the business to its present location. In 1956, Mr. Barnhart saw the need for a full-time ambulance service, and started the Aldous Ambulance Service with the purchase of the area's first ambulance with a full-time, First Aid trained staff. He operated the service for more than 30 years. In 1987, Mr. Barnhart purchased, renovated and reopened the now-named Aldous Funeral Home of Wallingford.
He had been a resident of Bomoseen since 1968. He enjoyed spending time during the winter months in Fort Myers, Fla., playing golf, deep-sea fishing and bass fishing.
Mr. Barnhart was a founding member and past chairman of the board of the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association and member and past chairman of the Rutland Area Girl Scout Council.
He was a 50-year member of the Rutland Country Club, a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 345, member and past governor of Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1122, member of Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1001 and Knights of Columbus Council No. 232. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 648, and recently was honored for his dedication to the local community. He was also a member and past commander of Disabled American Veterans No. 7 and member and past commander of American Legion Post 31.
Mr. Barnhart was a member of the Selected Independent Funeral Directors, a member and past president of Vermont Funeral Directors Association, and was a former member and past chairman of the Vermont State Board of Funeral Service, former member and usher of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and a former member and chairman of the St. Joseph Cemetery Association and the Rutland Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife, Anne M. Barnhart of Castleton; four daughters: Peggy Yenchko and husband Stephen of Springfield, Ill., and their children Stephen Thomas, Jeffrey and Jennifer Schwab and her husband Ben, Cathy Ferraro and her husband David of Rutland and their children Angela and Christopher, Ruth Barnhart and her husband Rick Root of Rutland and their children Nicole and Adam, and Mary Barnhart of Rutland; two sons: Joseph Barnhart and his wife, Shirley of Rutland Town and their two children Kate and Kelly, and Thomas "Todd" Barnhart II of Burlington and his daughter, Hannah Merrill and her husband, Ryan and their two children Isaac and Simeon; also by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Church in Castleton. Friends may call today (Friday) from 4 to 7 p.m. at Aldous Funeral Home.

JOHN H. "ZEB" LARRY
ST. ALBANS - John H. "Zeb" Larry, 90, a lifelong area resident, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at the Franklin County Rehab Center following a long illness. He was born on April 12, 1915, at the Central House in St. Albans, the son of the late Royal H. and Jessie (Shore) Larry. Zeb was married for 34 years to the former Aline Freeman, who predeceased him in 1970. On Dec. 24, 1971, in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, he married the former Dorothy (Lawton) Burbank, who survives him.
Zeb was in the first class to graduate (Pro Merito) from Bellows Free Academy in 1932. He worked for the U.S. Bureau of Entomology from 1932 - 1933, Clarence Brown, Inc. from 1933 - 1934 as a gas attendant, and the George S. Wood, Inc. from 1934 - 1941 as a tire repairman and vulcanizer. In 1941, he was educated in radio communications in Springfield, Mass. and then joined the U.S. War Department as an Air-to- Ground Communications Specialist being stationed at Patterson Air Field in Memphis, Tenn. and Eglin Field, in Florida. In 1945 he returned to St. Albans and with George S. Wood, they opened the Home Electronics Store and operated it until 1966.
He was a Master Sergeant with the Army National Guard, which was federalized in 1950 as the 43rd Division serving with the Army of Occupation of Germany. Zeb then joined Radio Service Labs as a Purchasing Agent, Cable and Audio designer, retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Owl Club, Past President of the Champlain Country Club, Vice President of the St. Albans Area Chamber of Commerce, Past President and a Harris Fellowship Award recipient with the St. Albans Rotary Club, Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion, Robert E. Glidden Post 758, Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and for 50 years was a member of the choir.
Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Dorothy of St. Albans; a son, Wayne Larry and his wife, Sally of St. Albans Bay; a daughter, Victoria Jacobs and her husband, Robert of Danville, Vt.; a sister, Betty Kell and her husband, George of Clairmont, Fla.; four granddaughters, one grandson, eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and first wife, Aline, Zeb was predeceased by a grandson, Jonathan Henry Larry; a stepson, Gary Paul Burbank; and a sister, Mona French.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at 2 p.m. at the St. Albans Bay Cemetery, Lake Road, with the Reverend Dennis E. Hayward, Rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church officiating. There will be no public visitation.
