RICHARD OWEN THAYER
Richard Owen Thayer, 87, formerly of Avon, Conn. after a short period of decline associated with Alzheimer’s Disease, died suddenly surrounded by his children on March 24, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. Dick came to live his final days in Vermont, staying with his son in Isle La Motte until it came time for him to be cared for at Our Lady of the Meadows in Richford.

He was born at Hartford Hospital on Oct. 18, 1917. Following the untimely death of his father from influenza during the great epidemic of 1918, he spent his early years in a parade of foster homes. Only after he reached his teen years was he able to rejoin his mother and some of his brothers to make a home in Windsor, Conn., where he attended John Fitch School. He left school early to toil as a young boy in the leaf-tobacco growing fields in the Connecticut River Valley, which was the start of a long life of hard work.

His adult years were spent mostly in Plainville, Conn. where he first worked as a cook at Cooke’s Tavern (now J. Timothy’s) where he met his future wife, Dorothea Thomasen. His future father-in-law declared he would not allow his daughter to marry a cook, so he arranged for Dick to apprentice as a tool and die maker at Trumball Electric, later General Electric. This was a brilliant career opportunity for Dick, as he was a meticulous and industrious craftsman. He went on to found his own successful business, Plainville Special Tool. He served on the Plainville Town Council and held other local offices. For a few idyllic years he lived in Bakersville, Conn., restoring a 200+ year old inn and trying his hand at maple sugaring, before returning to Plainville and later settling for his “retirement” in Avon, Conn.

Summers were spent on Long Island Sounds in Old Saybrook, Conn., where he enjoyed and excelled at fishing and boating. He was an avid and accomplished bowler, holding the title of Connecticut State Senior Bowling Champion for several years. He was a painstaking and proliferate gardener. His intricate tomato-starting system and his garden implements will find new life in the hands of volunteers at the Knox Parks Foundation of Hartford, Conn.

In addition to his father, John Henry Thayer, Richard was predeceased by his mother, Marion (Stoutenburgh) Brown; his beloved wife, Dorothea (Thomasen) Thayer; brothers George Thayer and John Thayer; half-brother, Charles Baxter; and step-brother, Forrest Brown. Richard leaves a daughter, Judith and her husband Richard Rosum of Darien, Conn.; two sons, Richard and his wife Nancy of Isle La Motte, Vt., and David and his fiance Virginia Holmes of Plymouth, Mass.; daughter-in-law Terri Thayer of Bristol, Conn.; three grandchildren: Gregory Rosum and his wife Michelle of Spencer, Mass., Andrea Rosum of Playa del Rey, Calif. and Deborah Thayer of St. Albans, Vt.; two great-grandsons, Jonathan and Christopher of Spencer, Mass.; a brother, Franklin Thayer of South Windsor, Conn.; and a step-sister, Juliet Brown Gilbert of Manchester, Conn.

Interment was at West Cemetery in Plainville, Conn. on March 30, 2005.

The family wishes to recognize the competent care available for persons under evaluation for, and management of, Alzheimer’s Disease in Vermont. The family is eternally grateful for the many supportive agencies, including the groundbreaking work at the Memory Disorder Center at FAHC, the patient volunteers at the Champlain Valley Agency of Aging, the sainted folks at Club Respite in St. Albans Bay, the kind professional staff at NWMC and FAHC, the gentle volunteers of Richford Ambulance Service, and of course all the dear people at Our Lady of the Meadows.
