WILLIAM REGINALD “DIG” ROWLEY
RICHFORD - William Reginald “Dig” Rowley, age 95, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
He was born in Richford on Nov. 8, 1909, a son of the late Lorenzo and Jennie (Gross) Rowley. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Ross and Carl Rowley; one sister, Walthrude (Rowley) Allen; and his wife, Marion (Sargent) Rowley
Dig was educated in the Richford Graded Schools and Montpelier Seminary. Between 1931 and 1941 he served as Assistant Sergeant at Arms for the Vermont State Legislature. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in Australia and New Guinea. Returning home in 1944, he married Marion E. Sargent, a teacher in Burlington. Dig and Marion spent over 50 years of married life in the North Country, where he was as inspector with the U.S. Customs Service retiring in 1972.
Dig’s wide-ranging enthusiasm led him down many paths. A lifelong baseball fan, in his early years he was a prominent player and pitcher for the Richford Rabbits - once pitching a legendary 44-inning game. He also loved horses and in addition to saddle horses, he was the owner, trainer and harness racer of a succession of trotters and pacers.
Dig had an abiding interest in the histories of Richford, of Vermont Railroads and horse racing, and of the border country that was his home. A witty and vivid raconteur, he readily brought to life the essence of history from his factual knowledge and his long, rich experience. In his last years he became a valued resource for Vermont folklorists and historians, as well as a continuing joy to his local listeners.
After nearly a century of active life in the town he loved, Dig was named Honorary Mayor of Richford on March 2, 1993. He was a member of the Missisquoi Lodge F&AM 9 for 74 years, and a member of the O.E.S. Martha Washington Chapter 44. He was the eldest member of the Richford American Legion Post 12. He was president of the Hillside Cemetery Association for over 50 years, and a member of the Richford Ambulance Committee since 1969.
Dig was, above all, a generous and hospitable friend whose life included many unheralded acts of kindness. He leaves a treasured family of nieces, nephews, and dear companions.
As was his wish, a celebration of his life will take place from 2 until 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 7, 2005, at his home in Richford. Interment will take place at the Hillside Cemetery in Richford at the convenience of the family.
