THOMAS W. FITZGERALD III
EAST FAIRFIELD / ENOSBURG FALLS - Mr. Thomas W. Fitzgerald III, age 72, died Easter Sunday morning, March 27, 2005, in the Northwestern Medical Center, following an extended period of failing health. Tom was born in Stowe, May 11, 1932, son of Thomas Fitzgerald Jr. and Lillian Bovat Fitzgerald.
Thomas served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and became a caregiver to epileptic patients in the Munson State Hospital in Palmer, Mass. In 1998, Tom returned to East Fairfield and became the primary care giver for his mother, Lillian. His most recent residence was at Riverview Apartments in Enosburg Falls.
Tom was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church in East Fairfield and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Robert E. Glidden Post 758 in St. Albans.
His survivors include his daughter Linda and her husband, Robert, Waite of Wales, Mass.; a sister, Monica and her husband, Stanley Kittell, of Sheldon; two brothers and their wives, Kermit and Ardelle Fitzgerald, of Georgia, Kenneth and Elizabeth Fitzgerald, of Bolton; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Fitzgerald, of St. Albans; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; several cousins, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son Donald Fitzgerald; and brother, Conrad Fitzgerald.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. in St. Anthony’s Church in East Fairfield. Interment will be later this spring in the Fitzgerald family lot in St. George’s Cemetery in Bakersfield. There will be no public calling hours, at Tom’s request. FURMAN N. MENARD SR.
FAIRFIELD -- Furman N. Menard Sr., age 63, passed away Monday, March 28, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington surrounded by his family.
He was born July 5, 1941, in Sheldon, the son of the late Albert and Ida (Jutras) Menard.
He was a resident of Fairfield most of his life where he operated a dairy farm which he purchased in 1964 and was forced into retirement after suffering a stroke in 1982. He was very involved in his children’s activities from baseball, scouts and 4-H. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He also enjoyed playing cards. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfield and was a former member of the Grange.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa ‘Terri’ (Brier) Menard of Fairfield, they were married Aug. 29, 1960; daughter, Brenda Paradee and her husband Chris of Fairfax; sons, Furman ‘Norman’ Menard Jr. and his wife Sarah of Fairfield; Joseph Menard and his wife Michelle of Fairfield, Michael Menard of Fairfield, and Albert Menard and his wife Dawn of Fairfield; 11 grandchildren: Jared, Jessica and Elijah Paradee, Elizabeth and Emma Menard, Kylee and Anthony Ryan, Landis Menard, and Caleb, Colin and Joshua Menard; two brothers, Daniel Menard and his wife Joyce of Fairfield, and Gerald Menard of Palm Springs, Calif.; six sisters: Marion Lussier of Exeter, N.H., Hilda Demar of St. Albans, Hortense Vanslette of Highgate Springs, Ruth Brosseau and her husband Leo of Garden Grove, Calif., Lucille Kinerson of Irasburg, and Anita Paradee of Enosburg Falls; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a daughter, Denise Menard, who died at birth; a brother, Maurice ‘Pete’ Menard; and three nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 31, 2005, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fairfield with Rev. Joseph Sullivan celebrating the mass of Christian burial. Interment will be held later this spring in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fairfield.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

ALICE MAY WAGNER
ST. ALBANS - Mrs. Alice May Wagner, age 86, died Friday evening, March 25, 2005, in the Haven Health Care Center, following an extended illness. She was born in St. Albans, April 23, 1918, daughter of the late Rolla and Lillian (Legnard) Bevins.
For several years May was employed in dietary service at the St. Albans Hospital. She was a lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church and a member of the Franklin County Senior Citizens.
May married Frederick W. Wagner Oct. 19, 1936. Mr. Wagner died March 12, 1986.
May is survived by her seven children and their spouses: Jeannette and Ed Genochio of Ottumwa, Iowa, Viola and Robert Cota of St. Albans, William Wagner and Harry Green of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Carol and Richard Martin of Milton, Jean and Robert Gaboury of Fairfax, Judith More of St. Albans, Robert and Melissa Wagner of St. Albans; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Hendee of St. Albans; a sister-in-law, Yvonne Bevins of Sheldon; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, May was predeceased by her sisters, Rena and Mazie; brothers, Winfred “Bim” Bevins, Ernest “Leaky” Bevins, Arnold Bevins, George Bevins, Calvin “Buck” Bevins, Faye Bevins and Warren Bevins.

NANCY L. KRAGEL
LAKE HAVASU, Ariz. / SWANTON -- Mrs. Nancy L. Kragel, age 48, died at her home in Lake Havasu, Ariz. after a lengthy illness, with her loving husband, Todd, by her side.
She was born in St. Albans, Aug. 30, 1955, daughter of Homer and Florence (Cross) Fiske. She graduated from Bellows Free Academy. Before moving to Arizona, she was a nurse’s assistant at The Holiday House Extended Care Facility.
Nancy enjoyed skiing and riding motorcycles with her son Kevin.
She is survived by her husband, Todd; her mother, Florence Fiske, of Bakersfield; three sisters and their husbands: Polly Bushey and her husband, Leon, of Enosburg Falls, Carolyn Bushey and her husband, Harve, of Franklin, and Teresa Smith and her husband, Brian, of Bakersfield; her two brothers: Reggie Fiske and his wife, Paule, of Swanton, and Michael Fiske and his wife, Sandra, of Sheldon. Nancy was predeceased by her son, Kevin, Fortin in 1996; her father, Homer Fiske, in 2005; and her sister Sandra Fiske in 1961.
A graveside interment will be in the Fiske family lot in the Bradley Cemetery in Fairfield, later this spring at a time and date to be announced.

FRANKLIN B. CARY
MILTON - Franklin B. Cary, 91, passed away peacefully March 24, 2005, after a long illness at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Milton on Oct. 23, 1913, the son of Howard and Lilla (Renouf) Cary.
Franklin operated his farm in Milton until 1967 and then worked as a carpenter’s superintendent for Davis Construction. One of his projects while working for Davis was to oversee the preparation of space for the installation of the first IBM computer system at the Employment Security Department in Montpelier.
During the years 1963-1973, he operated Cary’s Hillside Ski Slope at the family farm. It was a rope tow and was very popular for beginners. On Oct. 17, 1938, Franklin married Odessa Carey in Milton, and they took up residence at their present home on Lake Road. They began operation of the dairy farm and sugar bush at that time.
Franklin and Odessa have traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. They enjoy viewing the videotapes of these travels.
Dancing was a hobby including western square, contra and Scottish.
Another hobby was restoration of a 1926 Model T Ford and membership in the “2-cylinder club” and Antique Car Club.
He belonged to the Milton United Church, Seneca Lodge 40, F&AM, Milton and Georgia Granges, AARP, Arrowhead Senior Citizens, Milton historical Society and Independent Order of Odd Fellows where he held several offices including Noble Grand and District Deputy Grand Master.
Franklin was predeceased by his father, mother and stepmother Alice; his brother Russell and his wife Rhoda; and his brother Carlyle.
He is survived by his wife of 66 plus years, Odessa; his children, Randy and Shirley Cary, James and Vilma Cary all of Milton, Darla and Rick Burgess of Underhill and Laurel and Lewis Zeno of Milton; his foster children, Alice Morris of Winooski and Milo and Amelia Morehouse of Houston, Texas; his sister-in-law, Winnifred Cary of Jeffersonville; his nephew, Howard and Linda Cary of Jeffersonville and their children Alan and Jennifer Cary and Wendy and John Lafreniere; his grandchildren: Tamar (Cary) Bouchard, Stacy Cary, Erica (Cary) Gallagher, Kimberly (Zeno) and David Fuller, Heidi Cary, Kent Burgess, Heather Cary, Whitney Burgess and Tristan Kelley, Holly (Zeno) and Joey McRae, Ander and Paula Cary, Molly Cary and Tiana Rios; his great-grandchildren: Bowie, Samantha, Keenan, Logan, Tamera, Rafe, Daniel, Jordan, Shayne, Jake, Carly, Taylor, Abbey, Paige, Lyndon, Jesse, Nathan, James-Thomas, Tyler, Alexander, Mattia and Ethan.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, March 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7 in Milton. Seneca Lodge 40 F&AM will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 30, at 1 p.m. at the United Church of Milton with the Rev. Jeffrey Cornwell officiating. Burial will be later in the spring in the Milton Village Cemetery.

MARGARET ANN (KELLY) BYRNE
OTTAWA, CANADA -- Margaret Ann (Kelly) Byrne, 82, passed away peacefully at St. Patrick’s Home, Ottawa, on Sunday, March 20, 2005.
Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Lawrence Byrne. She was predeceased by her parents, Susan Kelly (McManus) and James Kelly. She leaves her sister-in-law, Catherine Olive Trombley and husband Charles, of Vermont, and their family; as well as her dear friend, Dorothy Clouthier of Ottawa. She will also be sadly missed by many friends in Montreal, Ottawa and cities around the globe, who remember her for her optimism, enthusiasm, humour and grace.
Margaret will be especially missed by all of her friends from the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), where she was an active member for many years in both Ottawa and Montreal. In particular, Margaret served as the Montreal Diocesan President, as well as on Quebec and Ontario provincial councils and the national CWL committee.
Margaret lived and worked in Montreal for most of her life and was employed with the Federal Business Development Bank of Canada in Montreal for almost 40 years.
Sincere thanks to Donna Haynal of Eldercare, the third floor staff at St. Patrick’s Home and to GEM Health Care Services, for their collective unflagging care and compassion.
A service in celebration of Margaret’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 29, 2005, 11 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, 153 Woodroffe Avenue (at Richmond Road). Visitation will be held prior to the funeral at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Ave. (at Richmond), Ottawa at 10 a.m. Interment to follow the funeral at Pinecrest Cemetery.

ALLEN D. LAVENDER
DeLAND, Fla. -- (Albert) Allen D. Lavender of DeLand, Fla., formerly of Swanton, Vt., passed away peacefully at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach with his loving family at his side. Allen will always be remembered for his love of life, his strength, courage, his kind, gentle, caring heart, his beautiful smile and loving blue eyes.
Allen loved hunting, fishing, cooking, Harley Davidsons and spending time with his family and friends.
Besides his soul mate and beloved wife Shirley, he leaves three children, Travis, Christopher and his companion Ashley, and a daughter Crystal; and three grandchildren, Cody, Shania and Brianna, all of Swanton. Allen also leaves his father Albert; and his half brothers and sisters of Irving, Texas; and several aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; many special friends; and his dog Foxy and cat Lucky. Allen was predeceased by his mother, Florienne (Flosey) Lavender; and his beloved dog Crystal. Allen earned respect from all that knew him and will be missed greatly. We will all hold him in our hearts forever.

KRISTEN ALISON DOE
SWANTON / BERKSHIRE - Kristen Alison Doe, age 20, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington with her loving family at her side following a courageous seven year battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Kristen was born Dec. 5, 1984, in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Carole (Benoit) Doe and Randy Doe.
Kristen loved life and lived it to its fullest and always with a smile no matter how difficult times would seem to get. She was very artistic, loved animals especially horses and her dog Sadie, doing puzzles, big trucks, four wheeling with her brother and spending time with her family. She was a considerate and caring person always thinking of others. She made a tremendous impact on all of those she met and the people that knew of her too.
She attended Camp Ta Kum Ta in Colchester for the past several years. While at the hospital in Burlington she passed her time being very involved with the Child Life Dept.
She graduated from Missisquoi Valley Union High School in 2003. She attended commencement ceremonies via closed circuit TV while receiving a transplant treatment in Milwaukee, Wis.
She is survived by her mother, Carole Doe and her fiancé Dean Bartemy of Swanton; her father Randy Doe and his wife Anne of Berkshire; her brother, Jason Doe and his wife Erin of Berkshire; two step-brothers, Dominic DeRosia of Berkshire, and B.J. DeRosia of Boca Raton, Fla.; her maternal grandparents, Ernest and Fernande (Lataille) Benoit of Enosburg Falls; her paternal grandparents, Norman and Betty (King) Doe of Berkshire; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning, March 28, at 11 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Benedict Kiely celebrating the mass of Christian burial. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at a later date.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday evening from 6 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
