RHONA C. OLIGNY

ENOSBURG FALLS - Rhona C. Oligny, age 92, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. Her family was at her bedside.

She was born in Enosburg Falls, Dec. 7, 1912, the daughter of the late Edward and Catherine (Campbell) Wilson and stepdaughter of the late Matthew Zimmerman.

Her early schooling was in New Rochelle, N.Y., later moving to East Arlington, Vt. at the age of nine.

In 1926, her mother and stepfather bought the property at 300 Missisquoi St. in Enosburg Falls. There they opened a bakery and Rhona helped wrap the loaves of bread in cloth to be delivered by horse and buggy from Enosburg to Bakersfield.

Rhona graduated from Enosburg Falls High School and later married Alfred P. Oligny. Together they ran Oligny’s Pharmacy (formerly the Giddings Drug Store) on Main Street. When the Perley Block was sold by Mrs. Royce to Pearls in 1955, they relocated to Bismark Street. In 1967, upon the death of Alfred P. Oligny, the pharmacy was closed, thus ending a long history of the drug store, which dated back to C.L. Mason (1909). Rhona saw that some of its history went to the Shelburne Museum; the apothecary scales, medicine bottles, framed Kendall Brothers posters, etc. She also furnished many historical prints of Enosburgh to the Enosburgh Historical Society’s publication of the Enosburgh Town Book in 1985.

To support herself and family, Rhona started housecleaning, working many housekeeping jobs before retiring in 1995 at the age of 83 from her longest employer and friends, Lucille and Guy Hubbard.

She was also employed by Mary Bouchard to help with the beginning of a business now known as “Mary’s Donuts”

Although Rhona worked days at the drug store and evenings tending the garden, sewing, or canning, she managed to find time for her children. There were special outings after Mass on Sundays. These were usually picnics to her beloved woods, where she shared with her children an abundance of knowledge of the trees, vines, mosses, wildflowers, insects, birds, etc.

There were trips for blackberries for her delicious blackberry pies and jams and of course, the crabapples for her wonderful mint jelly. She continued to share these times with her grandchildren. They recall a favorite time in the fall when they would help Gramma O gather the corn for her corncob jelly.

She loved gardening and experimented with many kinds of vegetables and flowers. One year she successfully grew peanuts.

Many residents of Enosburg Falls may remember buying her red raspberries, which she sold for 25 years.

She loved owls and had an extensive collection of over 900 owls.

Rhona was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. A lady with a heart of gold. It is time for her rest in everlasting peace with the Lord.

Besides her parents and husband, Rhona was predeceased by one half sister, Una Corey; one half brother, Robert Zimmerman; and two grandchildren, Jamie and Nathan Oligny.

She is survived by her children, Suzette Trudell and her husband Roger of Ooltawah, Tenn., Vance Oligny of Moreno Valley, Calif., Suzann Bergeron and her husband Roger of Burlington, and Lucy Tatro of Enosburg Falls; seven grandchildren, Michaela and Talya Trudell, Andrew Bergeron, Matthew Tatro, Pamela (Tatro) Bartlett and her husband Thomas, Kyla Hartigan and her companion, Nathan Sartwell, Errin Hartigan and her companion Brian Estes; four great-grandchildren, Amelia Bartlett, Andrea Bartlett, Ruby Sartwell, and Isaiah Sartwell.

In keeping with Rhona’s wishes she will be cremated and there will be no funeral services or visiting hours. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family in St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Enosburg Falls.

For those who wish, contributions in her memory may be made to the Enosburgh Ambulance Service, 83 Sampsonville Rd., Enosburg Falls, Vt. 05450.

Spears Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
