ERNEST RICHARD SNIDER
MONTGOMERY CENTER - Ernest Richard Snider, age 78, husband of Betsy (Oakes) Snider, passed away Friday, Dec. 17, 2004, at his home.
He was born April 11, 1926, in Westfield, Vt., the son of the late Harry and Mae (Ducharme) Snider.
He was a resident of Montgomery most of his life and was a devoted member of St. Isidore’s Catholic Church in Montgomery Center. He was a former selectman and road commissioner for the Town of Montgomery. When he was a young man he started working as a logger and milk hauler. He then started building homes and became a master electrician and plumber. He was also employed as a master electrician for the Asbestos Mines in Eden and RSG Electric Co. in Burlington. His last employment was with F.W. Whitcomb in Burlington as a heavy equipment operator.
Ernest enjoyed bowling and served as the secretary/treasurer for the Orleans Bowling Association for 25 years and had bowled in several area bowling leagues for over 30 years. He was also an accomplished accordion player and played in several bands for 38 years including, Roland Pidgeon and the Ramblers, Warner Country Echos, and Raymond Parents Country Ramblers. He also helped run BINGO at St. Isidore’s Church for 27 years. He was a member of the Montgomery Grange and then the Tyler Branch Grange for over 40 years.
He is survived by his wife, Betsy Snider of Montgomery Center, they were married May 9, 1953; five children, Janet Marie Snider and her husband Sim Bowling of Port Richey, Fla., Ernest Joseph Snider and his wife Lisa (Elston) of Montgomery Center, Duane Harry Snider and his girlfriend Mishael Briegal of New Port Richey, Fla., Kenneth Raoul Snider and his wife Carol (Forward) of Hampton, N.H., and Matthew Robert Snider of Montgomery Center; six grandchildren, Dawn Whitney, U.S. Army SW3 Ernest Brad Whitney, Serena Snider, Lindsay Snider, Joshua Snider, and Anthony Snider; two great-grandchildren, Storm Anne Snider and Devon Paul Snider; seven siblings, Leland Snider of Montgomery Center, Marguerite Warner and her husband Alvin of Lowell, Clifford Snider of Richford, Ralph Snider and his wife Theresa (Domina) of Montgomery Center, and Eddie Snider and his wife Barbara (Wright) of Sheldon; numerous nieces and nephews including Velma Colburn of Newport, and Hilda Peon of Lowell, whom were like Ernest’s sisters; special friends, Merle and Linda Van Gieson of Montgomery, Hubert and Joyce Hemingway of Waterville, and Roland and Nettie Pidgeon of Wesford. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a sister, Mabel Baraw; and a brother, Raoul Snider.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Isidore’s Catholic Church in Montgomery Center with Rev. Frank Eksterwoicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be next spring in St. Isidore’s Cemetery in Montgomery Center.
Visiting hours will be held today (Monday) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

JOLENE ROBIN (AMARAL) HODGDON
SWANTON, Vt. / HANOVER, N.H. -- Twenty-four winged angels descended downward to escort Jolene Robin (Amaral) Hodgdon to her heavenly home on Dec. 16, 2004. Jolene will now join her son Cody who predeceased her on March 16, 1998.
Jolene waged an incredibly brave and courageous battle against leukemia. At the time of her passing, Jolene’s room at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center overflowed with family and friends surrounding her.
Jolene was born July 23, 1980, in Berlin, Vt. to Joseph Amaral of Barre and Robin (Bullard) Amaral of Alburg. She was married to Porter (Kojak) Hodgdon on Aug. 21, 1998. Together they welcomed a beautiful daughter, Taylor Marie Hodgdon, into the world and family on March 12, 2001.
Above all else, Jolene cherished her time with Taylor. She also enjoyed trucking with Kojak and in her free time visiting and cussing with family and friends. In lieu of listing her accomplishments in life, she credits her husband and daughter as the only accomplishments that counted.
Besides her husband and daughter, Jolene is survived by her father, Joseph Amaral and his partner Libby Cookson of Barre; her mother Robin Amaral and her partner Leo Belrose of Alburg. Also her other set of parents Porter and Donna L. Hodgdon of Swanton; two sisters, Maria Amaral and her friend Jenn Usle and Ilona Amaral all of Barre and her brother, Chuck Bullard of Newport; a step sister, Mikaela Bolio of Barre; sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law, Mary Hodgdon and her husband Todd Rocheleau, Jason Hodgdon and his wife Sharae, Cindy Morris and her husband Richard and Elmer Hodgdon and his wife Donna M. Hodgdon all of Swanton; George Gould and his wife Nancy and Scott Gould and family all of Reading; grandparents, Evelyn Latuch and Joseph Amaral of Barre and Normal and Stephen Lavigne of Alburg as well as several aunts, uncles and many cousins who were also her best friends; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services celebrating Jolene’s life will be held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at 3 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father Timothy Sullivan of the Pastoral Care Department at Fletcher Allen Health Care will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.

MARTHA P. LYON
WATERBURY CENTER -- Martha P. Lyon, 80, of Gregg Hill Road, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Friday, Dec. 17, 2004. Born in St. Albans on Nov. 5, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Lucius and Eliza (Sweeny) Perry. She married Paul A. Lyon on Sept. 20, 1945.
Martha attended schools in St. Albans and was a 1942 graduate of BFA. She continued her education at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1946. While at UVM, she belonged to Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, a membership she has continued for over 60 years. Martha taught briefly at the Barlow Street School in St. Albans, and then remained busy as a homemaker and raising her family.
Martha’s interests included volunteering for the Red Cross and the former Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington. Her memberships included 10 years with the Champlain Echoes Vocal Group and she was an active member of the First Methodist Church in Burlington where she taught music and Sunday school. She was also a member of the Burlington Theater Club.
Martha is survived by her husband of 59 years, Paul A. Lyon of Waterbury Center; their children, Susan L. Dauphin and her husband, Ed of Huntington, and Jeffrey P. Lyon and his wife, Paula of Williston; their grandchildren, Todd M. Lyon of New York City, and Jeffrey P. Lyon Jr. of Millbury, Mass.; her sister, Josephine Smith of St. Albans; her brother, Ballard Perry and his wife, Becky of Derby Line; as well as nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury today (Monday) from 3 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held privately for the family. Interment will take place this spring in the Waterbury Center Cemetery.

ULRIC “RUSH” MATHIEU ROCHELEAU
ST. ALBANS -- Mr. Ulric “Rush” Mathieu Rocheleau died Dec. 19, 2004, at his home in St. Albans. Living happily in the 21st century with his wife and family, he was born in St. Albans Bay, the son of the late Armand and Orise (Lamothe) Rocheleau. He left us having celebrated many birthdays, although not nearly as many as “the gang” celebrated.
Rush was a veteran of World War II. He served for six years in the Navy aboard the carriers USS Saratoga and the USS Shipley Bay in the South Pacific as a hydraulic specialist. His employment during his lifetime included Fairfield Farms Maple Co., W.O. Krupps Garage, the Central Vermont Railway, carpentry to include building homes, and lastly owner and operator of Rush’s Service Station on Lake Street.
He served on the St. Albans City Planning Commission and the Holy Angels School Board. He was a member of Holy Angels Church, the Holy Angels Choir, 4 Th Degree Assembly Knights of Columbus, The American Legion Post 1, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 758.
He leaves his wife Gladys Martell of 54 years; his son Karl and wife Cheryl of St. Albans; his daughter Karyn Rocheleau and her husband David Philipkoski of Keene, N.H.; three very special grandchildren, Matthew and his wife Rebecca, Christopher and Jessica Rocheleau, which he enjoyed spending time with. He is also survived by a sister Armelle Sullivan, a brother Paul Aime Rocheleau, half brothers Rene and his wife Judy Rocheleau, and Bernard and his wife Marie Rocheleau; a special brother-in-law Allen Martell and his wife Laura and family; sisters-in-law Gloria Martell and Lorraine Chevalier. He was predeceased by his parents; his step-mother Eva Guertin Rocheleau; a sisters-in-law Fernaida Rocheleau and Madeline M. Doyle; brothers-in-law Karl Martell, Robert Doyle and Maurice Chevalier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Interment will be in the Rocheleau family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

DONALD DeFOREST DRAPER, SR.
HYDE PARK -- Donald DeForest Draper, Sr., 78, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at home with his family after a battle with cancer. He was born in Morrisville on Aug. 17, 1926, the son of Jonathan A. and Isabelle Mae Tatro Draper.
Don enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved the outdoors and “junking.”
Don worked as a farmer during his early years at the family farm in Fairfield, he also logged with his three sons throughout Lamoille County and later in his life he operated Draper & Sons with his son, Dana, and grandson, Dana “Buck, ” Jr. Don was also known as “Bum” to the older generation and “The Iron Man” to the younger generation.
Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hazel Elizabeth Paradee Draper; his children and their spouses, Donna and Rocky Drinkwine of Hyde Park, Dale Lowell of Morrisville, Donald, Jr. and friend, Shirley, of Hyde Park, Dana and Margaret “Peggy” Draper of Hyde Park, Darrell and Jane Draper also of Hyde Park. Don has 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard F. Draper of Colchester; a sister, Wilma Mauro of Florida; and a brother-in-law, Donald Provost of Burlington.
In addition to his parents, Don was predeceased by an infant son, Jonathan; his grandson, Dana “Buck” Draper, Jr.; his two brothers, Albert C. and Jonathan Draper and three sisters, Anna, Provost, Louella Deyo and Della Fisher.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the White-Fiess Funeral Home, 165 Brooklyn St., Morrisville. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Morristown Corners at the convenience of the family.

VIOLET M. JONES
ST. ALBANS BAY - Mrs. Violet M. Jones, age 98, six weeks short of her 99th birthday, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 15, 2004 in the Northwestern Medical Center. She was the matriarch to six generations, having had 18 children and more than 500 direct descendants.
Violet was born in Portsmouth, England, the youngest and last surviving of 12 children to the late George and Charlotte (Atkins) Cleverly. Her father died at the age of 46 when Violet was only six months old.
Her mother, with convincing of son George, tried to book a passage to Canada on the Titanic, but settled for the U.S.S. Canada. At the age of six years, their family was split up after arriving in Lennexville, Canada.
At the age of 12, Violet survived the influenza epidemic following the war. Then, at the tender age of 15, she married Henry Jones, who was 17 at the time, on May 2, 1921. They celebrated 66 years of married life prior to Henry’s passing Oct. 31, 1987.
They first moved to Franklin, Vt. and then to their family farm at St. Albans Bay. They remained on the farm until after Henry died. Violet then moved to Lake Street Housing in St. Albans City.
Violet remained a member of the St. Albans Bay United Methodist Church and was a member of the Lakeside Grange, Chapter #309 for over 40 years, a lifetime member of the Robert E. Glidden Post #758 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and an avid Bingo player.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, while watching the soaps, during the afternoon. She had hundreds of craftworks that shared with family and friends.
Of her 18 children, she is survived by 12, Irene Quintin of St. Albans, Eunice and her husband, David Shanks, of Austin, Texas, Elsie Hance of South Toms River, N.J., Henrietta Shappy, Arrietta Demar and Doris Burns all of St. Albans, Edith and her husband, Robert Houston, of Contoocook, N.H., Ernest Jones, Sr., of Richford, Ruth Young and Roberta and her husband, Charles Scott, all of St. Albans, Phyllis and her husband, Dean Hutchinson, of North Highland, Calif., Roy and his wife, Mary Jones, of South Windsor, Conn.; two sisters-in-law Marjorie Piette of Phillipsburg, Quebec and Violet Jones (Mrs. Gordon Jones) of Sutton, Quebec; 78 grandchildren, more than 200 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren and great-great-great grandchildren, and also many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, siblings and her husband, Violet was predeceased by her two sons tragically, Allen and James Jones, Nov. 23, 1950, six-month-old Robert on Feb. 19, 1936, son Henry Jones, Jr, on March 26, 1980, daughter Mona Olson, March 1, 1986, and daughter Dorothy Hance in 1994.
Her family wished to express its gratitude for all the kindnesses shown them by the staff at the Northwestern Medical Center during Mom’s illness.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 20, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the St. Albans Bay United Methodist Church. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home 86 South Main St. from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Interment will be next spring with her husband and children in the Jones family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery. MARY M. POQUETTE
NORTH HERO - Mary M. Poquette, 84, died early Wednesday morning, Dec. 15, 2004, at the Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester, following a long illness.
Mary was born in South Hero on Nov. 6, 1920, the daughter of Herbert and Edith Cameron.
She was married to Chester Poquette on March 17, 1936 in North Hero. Chester predeceased her in 1985.
Mary was creative and ingenious, working hard with Chester on the farm and at home.
She also worked for many years at the Harbor Store in North Hero.
Mrs. Poquette later married her brother-in-law, Clifford Poquette in 1993. Clifford predeceased her in November of this year.
Mary loved the Islands, especially Pelot’s Point, where she was a lifetime resident.
She was a member of St. Benedict’s in North Hero and of the Altar Society at St. Benedicts.
She is survived by her children, Audrey Noel of Grand Isle, Paul Poquette and his wife, Pat, of St. Albans, Earl Poquette and his wife, Judy, of North Hero, Mike Poquette and his wife, Mel, of Alburg, Neil Poquette and his wife, Terry, of Alburg; by 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; her sisters Betty McCarter of Conn., Bernadette Reid of Conn., and Pauline Thompson and her husband, Ralph, of Conn.; by her brother Herbert “Sonny” Cameron of Conn.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her son-in-law Bernard Noel in 1993 and her sister Laura Weiss.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004 at 11 a.m. in St. Benedict Catholic Church in North Hero.
Burial will follow in the Hyde Cemetery in No. Hero.
Memorial contributions may be made to either the American Cancer Soc., New England Div., 150 Kennedy Drive, South Burlington Vt. 05403-6745, or the Committee on Temporary Shelter, (COTS), 179 South Winooski Ave., Burlington, Vt. 05401.

CHRISTEAN G. GERROW
HIGHGATE CENTER - Christean G. Gerrow, age 73, passed away Wednesday morning Dec. 15, 2004 at her home with her family at her side.
She was born in Sutton, Quebec on July 22, 1931, the daughter of the late Herbert and Frances (Frechette) Tanner.
She was raised and went to school in Bakersfield and most of her adult life she made her home in Highgate Center. Her interests included taking rides in the country and always looking for adventure, garage sales, and collecting cookie jars of which she had close to 300. Anything that she did she took great pride in and had to be perfect. She loved her home and no one could ever visit her without being invited in and given coffee and whatever was available to eat. She also loved animals and enjoyed raising white-faced Herefords.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer A. Gerrow of Highgate Center, they were married Feb. 1, 1947; a son and his wife, Kenneth and Ellen Gerrow of Bakersfield; three daughters, Jenette Drowin of Wyoming, Mich., Janice Gerrow of East Hartford, Conn., and Sandra Garrow of Highgate Center; two brothers and their wives, Richard and Rachel Tanner of Sheldon, and Carlton and Linda Tanner of Enosburg Falls; 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, one great-great grandson; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by a sister, Madeline Tanner; a brother, Eugene Tanner; a granddaughter, Vanessa Gerrow.
Funeral services will be held Sunday Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Pastor Lyle Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the Missisquoi Cemetery in Enosburg Falls.
Visiting hours will be held Saturday from 2-4 & 7-9 at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls
