VIOLA A. McGINN
BRATTLEBORO -- Viola A. "Rusty" McGinn, 80, formerly of 25 Garfield Drive, died Wednesday morning, April 11, 2001, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health.
Mrs. McGinn was born in Wilder, Vt. on Dec. 19, 1920, the daughter of Rev. Leland Grover Chase, M.D. and Agnes Viola (Mitchell) Chase. She attended school in Claremont, N.H. and was a graduate of Stevens High School, Class of 1938.
Mrs. McGinn was a graduate of Massachusetts General Hospital, School of Nursing in Bostin, receiving her RN degree in 1942. She continued her nursing education earning her BS-HS in 1981 from the Vermont External Degree Program through Vermont College.
She was employed for many years with the Brattleboro Public Health Nursing Services and had worked for 15 years for the Brattleboro Retreat. She was also a nursing instructor and member of the faculty at the Thompson School of Practical Nursing in Brattleboro.
She was a resident of Brattleboro since 1954. During an interim domacile in Greenfield, Mass. she was employed at the Beacon Detoxification Unit. Mrs. McGinn was a member of the Brattleboro Registered Nurses Association, and was a former officer of the VT State Nurses Association.
She was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church where she served on the religious education committee and as a member of The Altar Guild. She was also active for many years with the Rainbow Girl's Program.
On Aug. 26, 1945 in East Field, Vt. she was married to Eugene F. McGinn who died in March of 1998.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. Richard C. McGinn of Sunderland, Mass., Dr. Dana F. McGinn of Brattleboro, and David N. McGinn of Thetford, Vt.; two daughters, Constance J. McGinn of Conway, Mass., and Virginia A. McGinn of Brattleboro, Vt.; two brothers, Dr. Leland G. Chase, Jr. of Dunedin, Fla., and Richard J. Chase, Sr. of Athol, Mass.; nine grandchildren, three great grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. Also left behind are much loved in-laws, Mary L. McGinn of Sunderland, Mass., and Bruce R. Thomas of Conway, Mass., Kate L. McGinn of Brattleboro, Vt., and Marcianne N. McGinn of Thetford, Vt. She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathryn E. McGinn who died in infancy, and by a most valued family friend, Mary F. Lane.
Mrs. McGinn bequeathed her body to the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington for educational advancement.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be conducted at St. Michael's Episcopal Church on Saturday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas J. Brown, Rector officiating. A light lunch and fellowship will follow.
Her faith in God, love of family, thirst for learning and willingness to teach and serve others were the benchmarks of her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mrs. McGinn's name may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Putney Road, Brattleboro, VT 05301, so that ministry and assistance for those less fortunate may be provided. Arrangements are under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.
ALICE COTA MERCHANT
SWANTON Alice Cota Merchant, 44, a resident of Brooklyn Street in Swanton Village, died late Wednesday evening, April 11, 2001, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston.
Alice was born in St. Albans Feb. 20, 1957, the daughter of Leo F. and Marie Anna (Viens) Cota. She attended Missisquoi Valley Union High School, graduating with the class of 1975. Until illness forced her to stop working, Alice had been associated with Labat-Anderson working with the United States Immigration Service in St. Albans. She had also previously been associated with New England Container of Swanton for 12 years. She was a lifelong parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In addition to her parents, Leo F. and Marie Anna Cota of Swanton, she leaves a daughter and granddaughter, Jessie and Katrina Poissant, and a son, Michael Bishop, II, all of Swanton. Also surviving are her brothers and sisters and their spouses, Ronald Cota and his wife Fern of Swanton, Mary Rusnak and her husband George of Swanton, Roger Cota and his wife Susan of Highgate, Linda Arsenault of Bronx, N.Y., Bernard Cota and his wife Ann of Swanton, Dennis Cota and his wife Charmaine of Swanton, and Frederick Cota and his wife Bennye of Winooski, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Jeremy Poissant in 1983.
A private funeral service for immediate family members will be held Saturday, April 14, 2001 from the Kidder Memorial Home. Interment will follow in the family lot in Riverside Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for all family and friends will be celebrated Easter Monday, April 16, 2001, at 10:30 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. The family will receive friends immediately following the liturgy in the Nativity Parish Center. NANCIE C. (ROBINSON) PUNDY
ST. ALBANS, VT./OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA. -- Mrs. Nancie C. (Robinson) Pundy, age 57, died March 29, 2001, in Integrist Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City after a lingering illness. She was born in St. Albans Feb. 25, 1944, daughter of Myrtle (Cross) Robinson and the late Ralph Robinson.
She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, class of 1962. She was a volunteer at Kerbs Memorial Hospital, later a nurse at the DeGoesbriand Hospital and in the Mary Fletcher Emergency Room. While in Franklin County she also was in nursing at the Hurlbut Nursing Home and Verdelle Village, ECF. In 1978 she moved to Oklahoma and worked at the Midwest City Hospital as a Clinical Pathologist and Registered Laboratory Technician. Nancie devoted her entire adult life to caring for the elderly.
Besides her mother Myrtle Robinson of St. Albans, she is survived by her daughter, Susan Pundy of California, her sister, Susan and her husband Robert Hartmann, and a brother Ralph (Chip) Robinson, all of Swanton and Chip's girlfriend Patricia Bird of Fairfax, a special aunt Yvonne Cross of Florida and St. Albans, and a special uncle Arnold Pelkey of St. Albans, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in St. Albans and Oklahoma. She also leaves two special angels in Oklahoma, Jacqui and Lou, who were so good to her and her family. Her family wishes to express profound appreciation for everything they have done for Nancie. She also leaves her beloved cat "Max." She was predeceased by her father Ralph Robinson Sept. 20, 1994.
Nancie was a communicant of the Tinker Chapel at the Tinker Air Force Base. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 3, 2001, at the Tinker Chapel with her good friend and spiritual advisor (Major, USAF Catholic Chaplin) Father Tom Doyle, the celebrant.
A Mass in her memory will be celebrated in St. Albans at a later date to be announced.
EDWARD DONALD PURCELL
COLCHESTER -- Edward Donald Purcell, 70, died Monday evening, April 9, 2001, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
Edward was born on Sept. 28, 1930 in Baltimore, Md., the son of Edward Anthony and Pauline (Weber) Purcell.
He was married to the former Mary Helen Patterson on Oct. 12, 1952 in Baltimore.
Mr. Purcell had served in the Maryland Air National Guard. Ed had been employed by IBM, most recently at the Manassas, Va. plant prior to his retirement in 1990.
In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by his children, Mary Jean Dean and her husband Mark of LaGrange, N.Y., Deborah Taffe and her husband John of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Edward G. Purcell and his wife Donna of Williston and Denise Speer and her husband Randy of Milton; by 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Ed is also survived by his sisters, Doris Purcell of Maryland, and Macy Grace, also of Maryland.
Funeral services will be held in Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Colchester at a time to be announced in the Free Press in the spring. Burial will follow in the Milton Village Cemetery. Memorials in Mr. Purcell's memory may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 16 So. Winooski Ave., Burlington, VT 05401-9948.

OLIN SHERBURNE CHAFFEE
HIGHGATE SPRINGS Olin Sherburne Chaffee, 92, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston surrounded by his loving family.
Olin was born in West Berkshire, Vt. on March 28, 1909, the son of James and Vera (Croft) Chaffee. He was self-employed as a carpenter and was a resident of Highgate Springs for over 65 years.
Mr. Chaffee was also a WWII Army Veteran and a member of the American Legion, St. Albans Post #1. He had married Eva Gross in West Berkshire in 1930. Eva predeceased him in 1981.
He is survived by his children, Mervyn Chaffee and his wife Geraldine of Boston, Va., Buddy Chaffee and his wife Doreen of Highgate Springs, Vt., his daughter Freya Chaffee of Waterbury, Vt., his daughter-in-law, Linda Chaffee of Spencerport, N.Y., his son-in-law, Jim Maskell, Sr. of Highgate Springs, Vt., and by his many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren, Jim and Helen Maskell and daughters Katie and Kelly, Jenny and Gary Ploof and their sons Jason and Jesse, Jay Chaffee, April and Beau Grigsby and daughters Amy and Stephenie, Penny and Russell Dodson and son Richard, Marty Chaffee, Jarrett and Janis Chaffe and their children Jillian and Gavin, Leslie and John Brooks Bianci and their son Jade, Jody and Evelyn Chafee and sons Dillon and Trevor, Joy Spears and daughters Josie and Jorie, Jill Pigeon and children Zachary and Eva, Joan Chaffee, Justin and Parm Chaffee and son Caleb, Michelle and Greg Welch and children Tucker and Maddie, Marcy and Wade Jean and daughters Sienna and Emma, Phoebe and Scott Dice, Meredith Pelkey, Scottie Chaffee and daughter Emily, by two great-great grandchildren, Shawn and Megan and by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Eva, he was predeceased by his daughters, Alicia C. Maskell in 1991, Marcia C. Brooks in 1996 and his son, Jeff Chaffee in 1999, and by his four brothers, Osmond, Alton, Irving and Richard.
Sherb's final words were "Family is the most important thing." There will be a private family ceremony to celebrate the life of this special person. His final resting place will be in the Chaffee Cemetery in West Berkshire on Memorial Day weekend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, VT 05478. Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.
MARCHELINE M. COOPER
ENOSBURG FALLS -- Marcheline M. Cooper, age 53, widow of Clarence P. Cooper, died Sunday evening, April 8, 2001, at her home following a brief illness.
She was born July 11, 1947 in Swanton, the daughter of the late Adrien & Emelda (Rainville) Loiselle.
She was a resident of Sheldon and Enosburg most of her life and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. She was a self-employed housekeeper in the area for many years and enjoyed gardening and car racing.
She is survived by five brothers, Antonio, Leo, John and Dennis Loiselle, all of Sheldon, and Paul Loiselle of Mystic, Conn.; a sister and her husband Pierrette & Ken Wimble of Georgia; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Harry Tibbits and Carolyn & John Cooper, all of Enosburg and many friends. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Bertrand Loiselle and a sister, Martha Page.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be later this spring in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Sheldon.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.at the Spears Funeral Home on Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls.

WINIFRED L. LUCIA
RICHFORD Mrs. Winifred L. Lucia, 81, a lifelong resident of the Richford community died Sunday afternoon, April 8, 2001, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born in Richford, Vt., Jan. 15, 1920, the daughter of the late Fred and Ruth (Colton) Demar. She attended Richford schools and in 1940 married Howard Lucia who predeceased her in 1984.
Mrs. Lucia was a lifelong, active and devoted member of All Saints Roman Catholic Parish in Richford.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Lagrandeur of Swanton, and her son, Peter Lucia and his wife Carole of Berkshire. She also leaves one surviving sister, Beatrice Demar of Richford. Also surviving are her six grandchildren and their spouses, Stacy L. Cadieux and her husband David of Highgate, Amanda M. Lucia of Berkshire, Christopher Lucia and his wife Maggie of Berkshire, Jeremy S. Lucia and his wife Sherrie of Colchester, Jennifer M. Broe of Montpelier, and Shawn E. Broe and his wife Valerie of Orange; seven great grandchildren, Lucas and Hannah Cadieux of Highgate, Zoe Lucia of Colchester, Kelsey and Emily Lucia of Berkshire and Daniel and Spencer Broe of Orange.
In addition to her husband Howard, Mrs. Lucia was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Lucia Broe in 1987 and son, John Howard Lucia in 1998, five brothers, Nelson F. Demar, Hector Demar, Harold James Demar, William H. Demar, and Clarence A. Demar, and three sisters, Ruth Dickinson, Effie Jacobs, and Mary Ada Messier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at 11 a.m. from All Saints Catholic Church in Richford. The Celebrant will be Father Leonidas Laroche. Interment services will be held later this spring in Hillside Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours. GEORGE DUPRAT
ST. ALBANS A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Mr. George DuPrat on Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Father Leonidas Laroche was the celebrant, assisted by Deacon Jack Rixon. Deacon Rixon delivered a very personal homily as a tribute to his friend. Claire Hungerford was the organist and soloist. The scripture lessons were read by Rose Rixon. George's grandchildren, Brittany, Ryan, Adam, Hannah and Andrew were the altar servers. They also placed the funeral pall on their grandfather's casket and, in procession, presented the offertory gifts to Father Laroche. Son Brian DuPrat spoke about his life and reflected on the special influence his father created by example for all to follow.
Attending were a guard of honor from the American Legion Post #1, representatives of Northwestern Medical Center, St. Mary's parish office staff, St. Mary's Bereavement Committee, St. Luke's (Fairfax) parishioners, Heritage Lane Residents, Vermont Employment and Training, Immigration and Naturalization Services, St. Albans City Mayor, Cota Insurance Agency, Office Qrtrs, as well as many neighbors and family friends.
Following prayers of committal by Father Laroche, the American Flag was presented to George's wife Mrs. Corliss DuPrat, by Americanism Officer Edgar Royer, representing the veterans organizations. Interment was in the DuPrat family lot in Holy Cross Cemetery. Sunday afternoon Father Laroche and Father Frank Connors, Pastor of St. Luke's Church in Fairfax, held a Christian Wake Service with the family and friends in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.
NORMAN L. LADUE
SWANTON -- Norman L. Ladue, 70, a resident of Wheeler Round in Swanton Town died late Friday evening, April 6, 2001, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington following a long illness.
He was born in St. Albans Nov. 18, 1931, the son of the late William Lafar and Laura Ladue. He attended Swanton schools and served his country in the United States Army during WWII. Most of his military enlistment was served in Germany.
Norman is survived by two daughters, Linda Rivers of Tallahassee, Fla., and Becky Rock of St. Albans. Also surviving are five sisters and their spouses, Donna Lafar of Swanton, Agnes and Romeo Gagne of Swanton, Arlene and John Vincelette of Swanton, Clarabelle Rushford of New Hampshire and Patsy Draper of Connecticut; a brother Evey Lafar and his wife Patty of Swanton; six grandchildren, Carrie, Jessie and Uriah Rivers and Heather, Hillerie and Joseph Rock; five great grandchildren, Dylan, Olivia, Hailie, Abigial and Nickieshia. Norman also leaves a very special niece and caregiver with whom he made his home for many years, Cheryl (Conger) Cournoyer and her daughter Heaven of Swanton, as well as several other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Clifford and Clara Lafar, his grandfather, Herman Ladue and his grandmother, Louise Ladue Cusson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at 4:30 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Interment services with military honors will be private in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home on Tuesday, April 10, 2001, from 2 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.
