MARY AUNCHMAN SHAW, R.N.

MIDDLEBURY / FRANKLIN -- Mary peacefully passed from this life to our Heavenly Father early Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, surrounded by the love of her family.

Mary had been residing at the "Franklin Carriage House" in Franklin, Vt. where she received love and care from Patsy Condor, manager, as well as the staff and residents and their special friend "Franklin."

Mary was born in Middlebury on Oct. 22, 1919, the daughter of Alexander and Esther (Hinricks) Aunchman. She received her primary education in Middlebury and was a graduate of Mount Saint Mary's Academy in Burlington. Mary continued her education at the "Fanny Allen School of Nursing" and received her R.N. degree in 1941. She advanced her studies in pediatrics at the "Boston Floating Hospital" in Boston, Mass. Due to World War II, Mary was "frozen" into a supervisory position and remained in Boston for five years.

Upon her return to Middlebury in 1956, Mary began her long nursing career at what was known then as Porter Hospital. Mary worked as a staff nurse in all departments. Her rolls expanded to supervisor, nursing assistant educator and the Director of Nursing. In the years prior to her retirement in 1980, Mary was in charge of the hospital pharmacy. Mary's nursing career "spilled" over into the community and her neighborhood, often going to the bedside of a terminally ill friend or injured child. There was a saying around North Street, "If you don't know what to do, ask Mary."

On April 12, 1947, Mary wed her childhood friend and neighbor, Lucius J. Shaw in St. Mary's Rectory in Middlebury. Together they made their home in Middlebury, where "Luke" and Mary, in their careers served the community they loved, Mary in Nursing and Luke as a Police Officer and in later years as the first manager of the new Water Pollution Control Plant. Luke predeceased Mary in 1974.

In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her sister, Agnes Dumas; and her brothers, Clarence Aunchman, who was MIA in the Korean Conflict, Arthur Aunchman, Kenneth Aunchman and Lawrence Aunchman.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Saundra Dubois and her husband Alexis of Swanton; her grandchildren she so dearly loved, Amy and her husband Jon Centabar of St. Albans and her grandson, Alexis Dubois II of Alburg Springs; a brother, Walter Aunchman of Punta Gorta, Fla.; her great-grandchildren, of whom she was so proud, Katherine Elizabeth Centabar, Andrew Jon Centabar, Hannah Marie Centabar and Olivia Regina Dubois.

She also leaves sisters-in-law, Theresa Aunchman of Burlington, Dorothy Shaw, Lucy Danyow and husband Raymond all of Middlebury; a brother-in-law, Donald and his wife Jordane also of Middlebury. Mary is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mary also leaves a much-loved kitty "Buff" who was a gift to Mary from her special Goddaughter, Lisa Johnston. Buff so enriched Mary's last years of life.

We entrust our Mom, Gram, Nana, Sister, Aunt and friend to our heavenly Father. We let you go with heavy hearts, but we know you have found your well-deserved peace.
