JANET VIETA

EAST HIGHGATE -- Janet Vieta, 75, a resident of the East Highgate area since 1953, died Monday, May 17, 2004, in the Northwestern Medical Center with her husband and children by her side.

She was born in Sheldon, March 12, 1929, the daughter of the late LeRoy and Eva (Guyette) Cantell. She attended schools in Sheldon Springs and in 1953 was married to Aubrey Vieta, who survives her.

Besides her husband of 51 years, she is survived by five children, Gary and his wife Pat of Highgate, Gail and her husband Dan Bronchuk of Swanton, Carl of Franklin, Paul of Highgate and Peter and his companion Lori Benoit of St. Albans; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves four sisters and their spouses, Catherine and Edmund Woznack of Schenectady, N.Y., Elaine and Robert St. Pierre of Georgia, Joyce and Leo Trombly of St. Albans and Mary and Roger Britch of Highgate.

She was predeceased by a brother, Leo Cantell on April 24, 1993.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, May 21, 2004, at 11 a.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. Father John J. Meagher, SSE will officiate. Interment will follow in the Vieta family lot in St. Louis Cemetery, Lamkin Street in Highgate Center. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday evening, May 20, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Gifts in Janet's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 11 Loomis Street, Montpelier, Vt. 05602-3021.

LILLIAN G. SCOTT

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Lillian G. Scott, age 88, died Monday afternoon, May 17, 2004, shortly after arrival at the Northwestern Medical Center. She was born in Everett, Mass., Aug. 29, 1915, daughter of the late Charles and Sara (Bolter) Whelan. She was married on Dec. 5, 1933, to William H. Scott, Sr. Mr. Scott died on Dec. 27, 1988. Besides her devotion to her loving family, Lillian was also a needlepoint artist.

She is survived by eight children and their spouses, Lillian and Roger Davis of New Orleans, La., William H. Jr. and Phyllis Scott of St. Albans, Robert and Dorothy Scott of Malden, Mass., Gayle and Gary Rudlong of Big Lake, Minn., Patsy Lanigan of Weymouth, Mass., Marjorie and Joe Messina of Lynn, Mass., Barbara and Marshall Hulbert of Montgomery Center, and Lorraine Scott of Swanton; 22 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Lillian was predeceased by three sons, Charles A. Scott, Thomas M. Scott, David F. Scott; four grandchildren, Nancy Davis, William E. Scott, Thomas M. Scott and David R. Scott; her twin sister, Beverly McGuire; three brothers, Harry, Theodore and Carl Whelan.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans, from 10 a.m. until the service Thursday morning. Interment will be in the Scott Family Lot in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

LARRY SCOTT "LUGNUT" McSWEENEY SR.

ALBURG / MILTON -- Larry Scott "Lugnut" McSweeney Sr., 38, passed away suddenly on Saturday, May 15, 2004. Larry was born in Burlington on Jan. 30, 1966, the son of Ralph Jr. and Ann Dupree McSweeney. On Aug. 24, 1991, he married the former Mary L. Fuller in St. Albans.

He was a former member of the Vermont Army National Guard.

Larry was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling, spending time with his friends and riding his go-carts.

In his life, he fought and beat cancer. Being cancer free for 10 years, he lived his life to the fullest.

He will always be remembered as the strong willed warrior that he was, even when faced by the hardest challenges, he fought a brave fight to the end.

Larry is survived by his wife Mary (Fuller) McSweeney of Alburg; his son, Larry S. McSweeney II of Alburg; a daughter, Melissa Benway and her husband Dale of St. Albans. His beloved grandchildren, Marissa Jean Kelleher and Brandon Benway, both of St. Albans, will dearly miss him. He is also survived by his mother, Ann McSweeney of Milton; his maternal grandmother "Memere, " Letha Dupree of Milton; three brothers, Ralph McSweeney III and his wife Connie of Georgia, Donald McSweeney Sr. and his wife Gina of Milton, and Gary McSweeney and his wife Janelle of Louisiana; many aunts, uncles and cousins that will miss him; four very special nieces and nephews, Donny Jr., Chip, Tiffany, and Brittany; as well as his close friends, Todd and Michelle Meunier, Brad Weed, Mike and Louise Koss, Bob Drapeau, Eric Duchaine, and his loyal companions Jake, Barney, Jade, Chico and Precious.

Larry was predeceased by his father Ralph McSweeney Jr. in 2000.

A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at 12:30 p.m. by Reverend Father John Feltz in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery in Milton. Visiting hours will be held today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton with a prayer service at 3:45 p.m., led by Father Feltz.

Memorial donations may be made to a fund established for Larry McSweeney II, c/o The Chittenden Bank, 150 Bank Street, Burlington, Vermont 05401 attn: Cecile Fuller.

Arrangements are by the Minor Funeral Home of Milton.

CLEMENT D. COMEAU

BURLINGTON -- Clement D. Comeau, 76 of Burlington, died Thursday, May 13, 2004, at his residence following a brief illness.

Clem was born on May 20, 1927, in Franklin, Vt., the son of the late Alfred and Maria (LaRoche) Comeau. On June 21, 1947, Clem married Dorothy M. Depeaux in Shelburne. She predeceased him on Dec. 25, 1996. He is a member of St. Mark's Parish and belongs to B.P.O.E. 916 and the Knights of Columbus.

Clem's long career in medicine spanned 44 years, beginning in 1947 when he worked as an operating technician at the DeGoesbriand Memorial Hospital. In 1956, having risen to the top of that position, Clem was asked to work in cardiac research and became Chief Research Technician of Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia Research Laboratories for Mary Fletcher Hospital Research Laboratories. In addition, in December 1959, Clem assumed the position of Chief Senior Research Technician for the UVM College of Medicine. It was that same year that Clem was the Perfusionist for the first MCHV coronary bypass operation ­ he was part mechanic and part medical technologist ­ in his hand lie the hearts of each patient for the many surgeries and years to follow. Clem's dual position as both Research Technologist for UVM and Clinical Perfusionist at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont continued until his retirement on June of 1990.

Clem loved to spend time at the family hunting camp in South Lincoln as well as at the family sugar house in Williston, affectionately known as "Clem's Woods." He enjoyed his family very much and loved to spend time with his children grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with his special friend Arlene Cunningham and her family. He was very fond of parties held with both families together.

Clem enjoyed playing golf league at the Elk's Lodge. He also enjoyed playing golf with his sister Laurette. He regularly enjoyed playing cribbage with his fellow members at both the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club.

He is survived by seven children, Suzanne M. Bushey and her husband, Ronald, of Albany, N.Y., Michael A. and his wife, Susan, of Fairfax, Mary Anne Morrell and her husband, George, of Dalton, Mass., Bernie J. and his wife, Ann, of Williston, Joseph G. and his wife, Liette, of Jeffersonville, Martha J. Comeau of South Burlington, and Timothy J. and his wife, Ruth, of Burlington; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Laurette Beaver of South Burlington, Jeannette Thibault of Charlotte, and Annette Langevin and her husband, Sylvia, of St. Albans; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Arlene Cunningham and her family. He was also predeceased by three brothers, Roland, Joseph, and Bernard.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated today, May 17, 2004, at 11:30 a.m. in St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church with interment following in Resurrection Park Cemetery, South Burlington.

Visiting hours were held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. with a K of C service at 3 p.m. and an Elk's service at 7:30 p.m. in the Ready Funeral Home, South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd.

ROBERT N. RAYMOND

JEFFERSONVILLE -- Robert Napoleon Raymond, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 14, 2004, in Genesis Elder Care in Morrisville. He was born in Jericho on Aug. 8, 1922, son of the late Elmer and Wilma (Giroux) Raymond. He married the former Reita Cross in St. Mary's Church, Cambridge on Oct. 18, 1943.

Robert was a very devoted husband and father as well as a very hard working provider, never without work for a moment as a farmer, painter, school bus driver, carpenter, mail carrier, bartender, Agway employee and most recently retired in 1998 at age 75 as a custodian with Cambridge Elementary School. He was always willing to contribute to his community and the benefit of others as a 25-plus year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Green Mountain Aire 3210 of Jeffersonville and an active member of St. Mary's Parish where he volunteered and ushered for many years. Somehow Robert still found time for the most important part of his life, his family.

He was the committed organizer of weekend cook-outs and trips to relatives and friends. His love of gardening was evident to all who enjoyed his beautiful vegetable gardens. He enjoyed ice fishing with his children and grandchildren. His intense blue eyes would sparkle while he enjoyed playing his harmonica and singing for his friends and family. It was a special treat for all when he would whistle his favorite tunes. Robert and his loving wife Reita maintained an "open door" at their home always willing to be unconditionally available to their children, friends, neighbors and extended family. His thoughtfulness, love and attentions will be genuinely missed by his many friends and family.

He is survived by his wife, Reita (Cross) Raymond of Jeffersonville; a son, Robert C. Raymond of Stowe; four daughters, Sandra Pepin of Georgia, Cheryl Williams and husband James of Alburg, Deborah Williamson and husband David of Jeffersonville, and Lori Barry and husband Ralph of Waterville; three foster children, Robert Kittell, Richard Kittell, and James Moye; a brother, Richard Raymond and wife Janice of Monkton; 10 grandchildren, Norman Jr., Michael, Michelle, Wendy, James Jr., Brian, Amy, Corey, Adam, and Brooke; 16 great-grandchildren, Sherri, Vanessa, Rebecca, Normie IV, Josh, Cody, Heather, Ashlea, Lonny II, James III, Zachary, Emily, Brandon, Kyle, Evan, and Caleb; and one great-great-grandchild, Dustin. He was also predeceased by, one grandchild, Tyler Barry; two brothers, Chauncey Raymond and Melvin Raymond; all five sisters, Beulah, Bernice, Ruth, Maude, and Ila.

Visiting hours will be held today, May 17, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m. in Hayes-Rich Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Cambridge with Reverend John McDermott officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Jeffersonville Village Cemetery.

SGT. RYAN MONTGOMERY CAMPBELL

U.S. Army Sergeant Ryan Montgomery Campbell was killed in Baghdad, Iraq on April 29, 2004, intercepting a suicide car bomber. Born Nov. 7, 1978, in Enterprise, Ala., Ryan grew up in California and Missouri. He attended Kirksville schools and graduated from Truman State University with a B.S. in Criminal Justice in 2001. He also graduated from the Moberly Police Academy.

Ryan loved to swim, fish, hunt, play the drums and shoot pool. He was a devoted son, brother, and friend, who loved children and animals. He could always make you laugh. Ryan joined the National Guard with his best friend Brendan McEvoy in 1999. The pair then enlisted in the Army in the spring of 2002, after which Ryan was stationed in Germany before shipping out to Baghdad a year ago. He planned to attend graduate school after his military service.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Ann MacCombie of Kirksville, Mo.; his sister Brooke M. Campbell of Atlanta, Ga.; his father Mark Campbell, of Fairfax, Va.; paternal grandparents, the late H. "Denny" Campbell Jr. and Marjorie Campbell Shaw of Highgate Springs, Vt.; his aunts and uncles, Christine Zeitz of Marion, KY, Hal Campbell III and JoAnne of Highgate Springs, Vt., Gregg Campbell of St. Albans, Vt., Carl and Holly (Campbell) Linden of San Clemente, Calif., Ty and Tammy Campbell of Highgate Springs; and cousins, HD Campbell IV, Heather Campbell, Jacob Campbell, Alexis Campbell, Paige Linden, Ty Campbell II and Tucker Campbell.

A memorial service was held at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church, Kirksville, Mo. on Friday, May 7, at 10 a.m. Campbell was buried in Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 11.

Donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

KYLE A. AUBIN

ALBURG -- Kyle A. Aubin, 25, a resident of the Alburg community, passed away on May 1, 2004. Kyle was born in St. Albans, Sept. 8, 1978, he was the son of Stephen and Carolyn (Myers) Aubin. He also leaves a brother, Stephen Aubin of Alburg.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 15, 2004, at 1 p.m. from the Union Bible Church in Alburg with The Reverend John Kehoe officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton.

HOMER A. RALEIGH

SWANTON -- Homer A. Raleigh, age 85, husband of Margaret (King) Raleigh, passed away Monday afternoon, May 10, 2004, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Mr. Raleigh was born Feb. 28, 1919, in St. Albans, the son of the late Maurice and Lillian Raleigh.

In keeping with Mr. Raleigh's wish funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in the Riverside Cemetery in Swanton.

NORMAN E. LAVELY

EAST BERKSHIRE -- Norman E. Lavely, age 78, passed away Wednesday morning, May 12, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 13, 1926, in East Burke, Vt., the son of the late Perley and Evelyn (Twombley) Lavely.

He was a resident of East Berkshire for the past 48 years and was a 1944 graduate of Lyndon Institute. He worked as an artificial inseminator for 35 years retiring in 1988 and was associated with Eastern A.I. Co-Op formerly known as New Hampshire-Vermont Artificial Breeders. He was a former selectman for the Town of Berkshire, drove school bus for the town and was Fire Chief for 15 years for the Berkshire Volunteer Fire Dept.

Norman belonged to many organizations including, County Extension Advisory Board, Missisquoi Lodge F&AM, former member of the Mount Sinai Shriners and was Past Master of the Tyler Branch Grange 498. He served as the Franklin County Delegate to the Vermont State Fire Fighters Assoc. Executive Board and was a member of the Vermont Fire Chiefs Assoc. He served in the U.S Army 43rd Infantry Division which was activated to Germany during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion Post 42 of Enosburg Falls and the VFW Robert Glidden Post of St. Albans. Norm was an Amateur Radio Operator (K1VKN).

He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Miller) Lavely of East Berkshire; four sons, John Lavely of East Berkshire and Burlington, Patrick Lavely of Essex Junction, Steven Lavely and his wife Diane of Raymond, N.H., and Douglas Lavely and his wife Natalie of Gilbert, Ariz.; three daughters, Kary Best and her husband Rev. Brett Best of Olney, Ill., Noreen Pierce and her husband Ron of Richmond, and Stephanie Newton and her husband Michael of Townsend, MT; his grandchildren, Joseph and Kasi Lavely, Eric and Nicole Lavely, Katherine, James and Melanie Best, Nikayla, Emily, Paige and Katlyn Newton, Rebekah, Joshua and Danae Pierce; one great-grandson, Iago Lavely; one brother, Arthur Lavely and his wife Lucille of St. Johnsbury Center; a nephew, David Lavely of Danville; a niece, Vicki Quatrini of St. Johnsbury.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at 3 p.m. at the Richford Baptist Church with Pastor Lyle Willey officiating assisted by Pastor Albert Willett. Interment will be held at a later date in the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph.

Visiting hours will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.
