JOSEPH E. POTTER, JR.
BRADENTON, Fla. / GEORGIA SHORE, Vt. -- Joseph E. Potter, Jr., 66, of Georgia Shore, Vt. and Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Winooski, died on Friday, May 21, 2004, at his home in Bradenton.
He was born in Burlington, Vt. on Dec. 29, 1937, son of the late Joseph E. and Vivian (Racicot) Potter. He married Ninon Castagner in Massena, N.Y. on April 30, 1960.
Joe served in both the Army and Air Force. He retired from IBM. Joe was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 782, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge 916, the Eagles Club, and the American Legion Post 1. Joe had many interests, among them golfing, garage saleing, puttering in his garage, feeding his critters, and shopping for and visiting with his friends.
He is survived by his wife Ninon, his son Joseph E. Potter, III and his wife Jody of Southbury, Conn.; his daughter, Dee Potter of Orlando, Fla.; two granddaughters, Jamie and Jordan Potter of Southbury, Conn.; and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winooski. Interment will follow in Fort Ethan Allen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest FL, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, Fla. 34238. Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, May 25, 2004, from 5 to 9 in the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., Winooski, Vt.
Members of the Burlington Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet for a prayer service at 7 p.m. The Elks will hold a service at 7:30 p.m.
GARY STEPHENSON PHILLIPS
MONTGOMERY CENTER -- Gary Stephenson Phillips, age 63, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Copley Hospital in Morrisville.
He was born Sept. 10, 1940 in St. Albans, the son of the late Thomas and Leona (Gover) Phillips.
He is survived by his wife, Marsha (Young) Phillips of Montgomery Center; his son, Mark Phillips and his wife Dawn of Milton; his grandchildren, Taylor, Chayce and Brooke Phillips. He is also survived by Marsha's children, whom Gary loved as his own, Kimberly Bryant and her husband Reid of North Orange, Mass., and Chris Carr and his daughter Aunestie Carr of Montgomery.
Gary was employed as Vice President of the Lyndonville Savings Bank until his poor health forced him to retire. He was instrumental in starting the Lyndonville Savings Bank Scholarship Program. He was a member of the F & AM Haswell Lodge and the Mount Sinai Shriners. He was also a former director of the Franklin County Industrial Development Corporation, Enosburg Falls Economic Development Corporation, and the Richford Renaissance.
In keeping with Gary's wishes he will be cremated and an outdoor celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 12, 2004, at 2 at his home on 121 North Main St. in Montgomery Center. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in the family lot at the Sheldon Village Cemetery.

RUTH TAY PEARSON
ST. ALBANS -- Ruth Tay Pearson, 90, died peacefully at Redstone Villa on May 22, 2004. She was born on June 14, 1913, in Narberth, Penn. and grew up in Willamette, Ill., where she attended New Trier High School. She was the only child of Clarence and Ruth Sappington Tay. She graduated from Beloit Collage in Beloit, Wis. with a B.A. in English and was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She did advance studies at the University of Vermont.
Ruth had a wide variety of interests. She was a member of the original committee to seek funds from the Vermont Legislature for mental health. She was a past president of the St. Albans Garden Club, was an active member of the Old Lace Society, and was a consultant on old lace for the Shelburne Museum. Her collection of antique quilts was exhibited in many locations. Ruth was on the finance committee and vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. She was on the board of the Franklin-Grand Isle Mental Health Association, was president of The Autonoe Club, and a member of the St. Albans Home Demonstration Group. She traveled extensively in Europe in the 1970's and enjoyed summers at the family camp at Hathaway Point.
She is survived by Charles Pearson, her husband of 65 years; as well as her daughter, Anne Umphrey of Concord, Mass.; her son and daughter-in-law, William and Marguerite (Peggy) Pearson of Stowe, Vt.; and her four grandchildren, Catherine Cowart, Willard Unphrey, and Tay and Kimberley Pearson; her sisters-in-law, Ellen Wilder and Florence Pearson; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Pearson and her grandson, Michael Umphrey. Ruth also treasured the many friendships made throughout her life in St. Albans and was especially grateful to the compassionate team on staff at Redstone Villa for their unlimited generosity of kindness and devotion.
There will be a memorial service at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in St. Albans on Sunday, June 6, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. with The Reverend Dennis E. Hayward officiating.
In honor of Ruth's lifetime love of animals, especially cats, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans, Vt. 05478.

HELEN R. DONNA
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Mrs. Helen R. Donna, 77, of Plattsburgh, passed away Friday, May 21, 2004, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington, Vt. She was born in St. Albans on Nov. 15, 1926, the daughter of John Patrick and Barbara (Bell) Roche.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Albert Michael Donna; a brother, James Roche; a sister, Ethelyn Perry; and a son-in-law, Roger Bordeau.
She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara and I. John Neubauer of Lake George, Susan Bordeau of Plattsburgh, Kathleen Donna of Rutland, Vt., Karen and Richard Conner of Fultonham, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Michael Bordeau and his wife Mandi of Plattsburgh, Dr. Kevin Bordeau and his wife Kristine of Norfolk, Va., Kelly and Mary Neubauer of Lake George; four great-grandsons, Dominick Michael Roger Bordeau, Nathaniel Asa Moore Bordeau, Benjamin Owen Albert Bordeau, Hudson Wakefield Bordeau; a sister-in-law, Rae Roche of Swanton, Vt.; a brother-in-law, J. Ballard Perry of Derby, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Patricia Perry. Helen is also survived by her beloved dog, Duffy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 26, at 1 p.m. from St. Peter's Church. Entombment will follow at the Whispering Maples Mausoleum on the Tom Miller Road.
CARROLL S. BASHAW
ORANGE CITY, Fla. / ENOSBURG FALLS, Vt. -- Carroll S. Bashaw, age 79, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2004, at his home in Orange City, Fla.
He was born May 11, 1925 in Richford, the son of the late Henry N. and Mary H. (Sears) Bashaw.
Carroll was a resident of Enosburg Falls and Richford most of his life and was a 1943 graduate of Richford High School. He was employed at the Missisquoi Pulp Mill for 41 years retiring in 1987 at which time he made his home in Orange City in the winter and Lake Carmi in the summer. Following his retirement he worked as the starter at the Enosburg Falls Country Club and at the Publix Grocery Store in Orange City. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Debary, Fla. Carroll was an avid bowler and had belonged to several bowling leagues at the Dairy Center in Enosburg Falls. He also enjoyed square dancing in Vermont and Florida. He served on the Board of the Missisquoi Little League in the early 1960s.
He is survived by his wife Audrey (Lothian) Bashaw of Orange City, Fla., they were married Oct. 15, 1946; two sons, Michael Bashaw and his companion Sharon Chun of Hillsborough, N.C., and Keith Bashaw and his wife, Laurie of Williston; a daughter, Bonnie Bashaw - Cole and her husband Kevin of St. Johnsbury; eight grandchildren, Travis Bashaw and his wife Stacey, Damon and Ashley Bashaw, Justin, Tucker and Katelyn Bashaw, and Andrea and Ben Cole; a brother and his wife, Aubrey and Marie Bashaw of East Windsor, Conn.; a sister, Faye Edwards of Enfield, Conn.; a brother-in-law, Hayden Janes of Richford; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a sister, Mavis Janes.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 29, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Rev. Benedict Kiely celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
Visiting hours will be held Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave, Enosburg Falls.

RICHARD DALTON UNDERWOOD, SR.
SWANTON -- Richard Dalton Underwood, Sr., age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded in love with his family by his side, at the home of his daughter, Martha and son-in-law, Steve Rocheleau on the Bushey Road, May 20, 2004, following a brief and heroic battle with cancer.
He was born July 13, 1927, in Swanton on the Bushey Road where he lived most of his life. Richard was the 13th born to the late Edward L., Sr. and Winifred ( LaGrange) Underwood. He attended the local country schools in which he still carried humorous memories. He was a Buck Sergeant serving in the Army/Air Force, a Veteran of World War II serving in countries of the south Pacific. At the time of his Honorable Discharge he was stationed in El Paso, Texas where he met and married his wife of 45 years, Rachael Peralta Underwood, who now holds him with loving arms. On July 24, 1992, Rachael went first to make a place for him and to aid and comfort as he left his family and friends on earth.
Richard had many enjoyable memories and felt very blessed with all the friends he had made along the way. In 1985 he retired after 35 years from Union Carbide (Energizer) as a machine mechanic. Following which he aided in the business of Richard's Sauces with his son, Richard Jr. and wife Melanie. He was active in the producing and bottling of product in its early days, giving encouragement and support. His retirement years kept him busy with gardening and time to enjoy his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as wells as new hobbies of camping and road trips. As his illness progressed his favorite pastime was watching a good western and visiting with friends and relatives. He loved to reminisce and hear stories of others.
Richard was a member of the Green Mountain Post 1, American Legion and Robert E. Glidden Post 758, V.F.W. Because he chose to be of service to his country at a young age, his High School Diploma was not received until most recently. That was a very proud day for all of us. Richard was a member of the Nativity Church of Swanton where he practiced his faith and enjoyed religious celebrations.
Richard is survived by his son, Richard D. Underwood, Jr. and his wife, Melanie of St. Albans; his daughter and her husband, Martha and Steve Rocheleau of Swanton; three grandchildren, Nicole (Rocheleau) Ward and her husband, Carl of Sheldon, Trista Underwood of El Paso, Texas and Jason Rocheleau of Swanton and his companion Cathie Richer; two great-granddaughters, Breanne and Marya Machia of Sheldon and two great-grandsons, Justin Sartwell of Sheldon and Jacob Rocheleau of Swanton; two sisters, Edith and her husband, George Miner of St. Albans and Florence Gadouas of Swanton; three sisters-in-law, Doris Underwood and Winona Underwood of St. Albans and Charlene Underwood of Swanton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Richard will also be greatly missed by his companion of seven years, Sandra Gauthier of Swanton, her children, their spouses and grandchildren.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Edward, Philip, Carroll, Gordus, Ralph, Chester and Raymond; and his sisters, Ruth Bessette, Annabelle Griffin and Helen King.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, May 24, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity in Swanton with Father John J. Meagher, S.S.E. as celebrant. Interment will follow with full military honors in the family lot at Riverside Cemetery. Immediately following, a reception will be at the American Legion Hall in St. Albans.

WILLIAM A. CHALIFOUX
ENOSBURG FALLS -- William A. Chalifoux, age 89, died Thursday morning, May 20, 2004, at Haven Health Care Facility in St. Albans following a brief illness.
He was born in Frelighsburgh, Que. Feb. 6, 1915, the son of the late Clement and Eva (Goyette) Chalifoux.
In his early years he lived in New York and Connecticut and had been a resident of Enosburg Falls since 1971. He was employed at Blue Seal Feeds in Richford for 28 years retiring in 1980. Bill was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in Central Europe during World War II. Bill enjoyed his weekly rides around the countryside with his nephew Doug, and he also enjoyed riding around with Ernest LaFlam. Bill also enjoyed his visits with Gladys Couture.
He is survived by six nephews, Larry Chalifoux and his wife Mary of Enosburg Falls, James Harrod Jr. of Milton, Robert Brouillette of Vergennes, Roger Brouillette of Norfalk, Va., Gary Brouillette and his wife Camilla of Barre, and Doug Harrod and his wife Jeanne of Sheldon; a niece, Penny Couture of Milton; and several grand nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by three sisters, Blanche Brouillette, Shirley Brouillette, and Clementine Harrod; and a brother, Clement Chalifoux.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, May 22, 2004, at 10 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Reverend Benedict Keily officiating. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
A time of visitation will be held at the funeral home Saturday from 9 a.m. until the hour of the funeral.

HUBERT PARE
It is with great sadness the family of Hubert Pare announced his passing on Saturday, May 15, at the age of 74 years. He went peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
He was born Oct. 19, 1929, son of the late Alcide and Blanche Daze Pare. He served in the Navy during the Korean War and following his discharge settled down in St. Albans.
He worked for the Fuller Brush Company and also at IBM as a technician for 25 years. During his retirement he spent many summers at camp on Lake Carmi, but his main interest was working on the computer. He enjoyed the E-mails sent by all of his friends, but most of all he treasured time spent on the computer with his handicapped daughter, Janet.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Marie of 50 years, and his four daughters, Deborah and Thomas St. Francis of Swanton, Nancy and Gary Savary of Wareham, Mass., Laura and Mike Rocheleau of St. Albans, and most of all Janet.
Hubert is also survived by two sisters, Cecile Ferland and late husband Gerald, and Jane Magnant and late husband John; five brothers, Fred and late wife Alice, Romeo and wife Josephine, Ernest and wife Jeanette, Raymond and wife Pauline, Joseph and wife Carol.
Hubert was predeceased by his brothers, L. Louis (Jimmy) and Henry. He also leaves two grandsons, Jesse and Chad Rocheleau; a special sister/brother-in-law, Rita and Maynard Gosselin; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
A very special thank you to Mary Hoy, the nurses from Home Health and Hospice Care.
In keeping with Hubert's wish funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

LAWRENCE "JOCK" J. GREENIA
FAIRFAX -- Lawrence "Jock" James Greenia, 72, passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2004, in Redstone Villa in St. Albans following a lingering illness. He was born in Fletcher on July 21, 1931, son of the late Lawrence and Mildred (Cushing) Greenia.
Lawrence served his country well in the Navy and Army for 21 years and was a decorated veteran, receiving the Bronze Star while serving in Vietnam with the 196th Light Infantry and the 198th American Division. He was also recognized an outstanding Drill Instructor at West Point.
Lawrence was employed at to the Northwest Correctional Facility, the credit office at the former DeGoesbriand Hospital, and most recently, the Vermont State Liquor Agency until he retired due to his stroke. He will greatly missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Monika Greenia of Los Angelos, Calif.; his sisters, Lorraine Cooley of Fairfax, Judy Sorrell and her husband Ed, Jeanne Barr and her husband Brian; his brother, James Greenia and his wife Rita and their families; his stepmother, Marion Greenia; his niece, Deborah Cooley Ciment and husband Peter of San Antonio, Texas, and their children, Samuel and his wife Linda, Daniel, Matthew and Jessica; several aunts, uncles, cousins; his long time and special friend, James Longley and his wife Peggy; and a special friend of the family, Beverly Frederick. He was also predeceased by his wife, Lucia Greenia; his stepfather, Donald Badger; and his brother, Donald Badger, Jr.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, May 21, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at 10 a.m. at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home with Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Binghamville Cemetery in Fletcher.
