DORIS A. DEWART
Jesus came to town, March 27, 2004, hung around for quite awhile. In fact He had been here since late afternoon, Friday night for us any way. He welcomed Doris Dewart into His Dimension. She passed through the time frame, through the Pearly Gates at 4:56 p.m., Saturday, March 27, 2004, while at the Birchwood Terrace Healthcare.
She leaves behind a lot of us; three sons, our older brother and his wife, Allen K. Harrington and his wife, Christine and Daniel B. Ranks and his wife, Cindy. Many grandchildren and great grandchildren. To Daniel and Cindy; daughter, Barbara Leaders and her husband, Kris and their children, Matthew and Branden. Many friends also. Mom was active in the Home Dem, WSCS and other societies, when she lived in St. Albans.
Mom came into this world on August of 1911, the 25th day born Alice Doris Allen, to Halcomb Allen and Alice (Bapp) Allen. She also had a younger brother Robert. She married Lloyd W. Harrington in 1930 and together they raised three sons, Raymond L., another son, and Allen K. There was an older brother mom gave up to let God raise for her. After 17 years they became unhappy with each other and divorced. She again married a man, Hildreth Ranks, but that marriage failed also. The best part of that union gave we three brothers, a new brother, Daniel. When I went away to serve Uncle Sam in the U.S. Navy, she married a man named Eugene Dewart, a railroad man and accomplished pianist/song writer. He passed on while they were married. In 1969, I was honored to be at her last wedding to Lawrence Mayes. This one ended in a few years in divorce. Mom outlived all her husbands reclaiming the Dewart name.
We drifted apart many of the years and then would be found playing Hearts one night a week at her place.
Taking over the handling of her #1 son's financial affairs and being a guide for his life she spent the longest time with him since he had been injured in the 1950's, and his marriages had failed. She handled this chore until his death in 1991.
Danny and I helped her move a couple of times.
Her health failed with clogged arteries and we three were called upon to help her with the decision to "fix" the problem. She passed that ordeal and then went to her apartment, but too early. Before help came one day she suffered a stroke and went back to the hospital. Decision was made to sign her into Birchwood so I did. I became her P.O.A. to handle her affairs, because her "stay" at Birchwood became long term and then permanent, until Saturday.
Birchwood has seen her many mood swings, her fire control technical antics, and her escape escapades and survived. They gave her great service and care putting up with her wails and hollers into the night. She became one of the most loved residents that Birchwood has seen. She was known as Dorie to many and all the nurses in "B Wing" loved to fix up her hair with a hair band.
She will be sorely missed by all of us. We wish to thank Birchwood Terrace Healthcare for all their help and good care.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans with Pastor Kim Ransom of the Cornerstone Community Church, Assembly of God, officiating. Doris' family will receive friends on Wednesday at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in the family lot in St. Albans Bay Cemetery later this spring.
