WILLIAM K. GILLESPIE
ST. ALBANS -- William (Bill) Kenyon Gillespie, 89, a resident of St. Albans for most of his life, died peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, in the presence of his loved ones. Well-known and loved in his community, Bill was deeply devoted to his family, his friends, and his country.
Born in St. Albans, Oct. 19, 1914, the son of the late George Ross and Florence (Kenyon) Gillespie, Bill attended Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, where he loved playing on Bob White's football and baseball teams, and the basketball team. An outstanding young athlete, Bill later attended Montpelier Seminary on a football scholarship.
He was employed as a commercial artist at the Rock of Ages Monuments in Barre, Vt., and later at the National Guard Armory in St. Albans. He was a member of the Guard for several periods between 1993 and 1938. During that time a tall, pretty brunette caught his eye, and on Oct. 25, 1937, Bill married Rita St. Denis and became a loving husband and father of four daughters. He was by Rita's side when she died in 1981 after a long illness.
Bill served his country by volunteering for the United States army during World War II. He was commissioned in 1941 as a 2nd Lieutenant assigned to H Company, 172nd Infantry, 43rd Division and spent the next several years in combat in the South Pacific. During that time he rose in rank to Lieutenant Colonel and became the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion of the 172nd Infantry. Bill received the Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, and he recently was awarded the Vermont Veteran's Medal and the Vermont Distinguished Service Medal.
After the war, Bill worked as a fireman and train engineer at the Central Vermont Railway, was promoted to the position of Trainmaster, and retired from the CVR in 1974. During his retirement, Bill indulged his love of art, a gift he inherited from his mother Florence. He created many beautiful oil paintings of historical sites and locomotives that were later published in a series of books and held in private and public collections.
During the last 20 years of his life, Bill enjoyed serving his community in many volunteer activities. A lifetime member of the St. Albans chapters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, Bill helped with meals for seniors at the VFW, and he served as honor guard for the American Legion, attending many funerals for fellow veterans.
Since the early 1980's, Bill was a familiar and much-loved figure at the St. Albans Historical Museum, where he served as a tour guide and regaled visitors to the Railroad Room and Military Room with stories about the old Central Vermont Railway and World War II. Bill helped with the Museum's 2002 Membership Drive, signing and numbering 200 prints of his painting, "St. Albans Train Shed and Central Vermont Headquarters." The prints were used as a free gift to new members of the museum.
Bill also was a faithful member of the St. Albans Senior Center, and he assisted with Meals on Wheels as a volunteer driver.
A regular member of the coffee group at My Dad's Diner in St. Albans, Bill shared many hours of laughter and heart-felt stories with his friends.
Before he went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Feb. 3, Bill had a chance to say goodbye to his family. Always concerned about their welfare, even in the midst of his suffering during his last few weeks, Bill wanted to make sure that all his loved ones would be taken care of.
This brave soldier, loving husband and father and devoted friend to many will always be in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him well.
Bill is survived by his four daughters, Mary Ellen Bushey and her husband, John of Richmond, Va., Sandra Gillespie and her husband, Frank Allison of Decatur, Ga., Bonnie Jane Gillespie of Burlington and Elizabeth Gillespie and her husband, Duane Waller of Waltham, Vt.; six grandchildren, Steve Bushey and his wife, Angela Faeth, Hilary Meeken, Jennifer Parker, Gregory Bushey and his wife, Susan, and Amy, Kenyon, and David Lorbati; four step-grandchildren, Kenneth and Michael Allison, and Luke and Elisabeth Waller.
