DONALD MELVIN WRIGHT

EAST ENOSBURGH -- Donald Melvin Wright was the middle child, and elder son, of the late Melvin Fergusson Wright and Mary (Stratton) Wright. He was born Aug. 16, 1917, the sixth generation born on the Wright Farm in East Enosburgh.

Donald married Ruth Irene Stanley on Sept. 6, 1938. They farmed all their lives. He did morning chores, then drove a milk route picking up cans of milk to deliver to the creamery in Enosburg Falls. He would then deliver blocks of ice, which had been harvested from the Missisquoi River while Ruth would start the evening chores.

Donald and Ruth were involved in all aspects of the dairy and maple industries. In the late 1950's and early 1960's, first Donald and his brother Wilbur, then later Don, Ruth, and their sons, operated Wright's Dairy in Enosburg Falls where they bottled and delivered milk. Most of their lives they sugared and eventually Ruth also had a retail maple business with her daughter-in-law, Darlene. He helped his son Carroll on the farm doing field work until he was 84 years old.

They were progressive farmers, and in the early 40's, bought the first tractor and baler in their community. Don then hired out to help his neighbors get their hay in more efficiently. He and Wilbur, in typical farm boy fashion, would pull tractors. They would back the "Ferg" and "Nelly Belle" up to each other on the dirt road in front of the house, hook them together, and pull!

Don was an expert horseman. At the age of nine, a neighbor who was relocating gave him his first horse "Jim." He was never again without a horse until his late 70s. He worked teams in the farm wood lots and in the sugar woods, where they ran up to 14, 000 taps. In the late 1950's and 1960's he would compete in horse pulls with his farm teams and later in life showed draft horses with his sons and grandchildren. Don was most proud, when he showed his neighbors that he could maneuver his team, by voice command, into the barn yard, back them out, turn them around, and park them next to the mailbox. He never left the milk house or touched a line.

His skills were seen at draft horse shows all throughout New England and Eastern New York. Ruth also drove horses and made every show they attended that much more enjoyable. She was also well known in the draft horse community.

During his life, Donald was director of the Milton Milk Co-Op, a founder and director of the Franklin County Maple Co-Op, member of the Vermont Sugarmakers Association, a substitute rural mail carrier for over forty years, and Enosburgh Town Selectman for 17 years. Donald, Ruth, and County Extension Agent Walter Rockwood started what in now known as June Dairy Day.

Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by his wife Ruth on May 11, 1998; his brother, Wilbur; his sister, Helen Converse; and his brothers-in-law, Carroll Stanley and Carl Converse.

He is survived by his sons and their wives, Carroll and Darlene of East Enosburgh and their children, Sharyn Abbott, Dean Wright, Brenda Goodhue, and Amy Parent; Stanley and Penny of East Enosburgh, and their daughters, Mary Wright, Ellen Wright and Douglass Kane; Gary and Debbie of Georgia and their children, Ben Wright and Andrea Sabens; a sister-in-law, Barbara Wright of Enosburg Falls; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his special friend, Harriet (Soule) Armstrong of Georgia, Vt. and her family. In these latter years, they enjoyed playing cards, taking rides and visiting old friends, family and classmates.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, February 10, 2004, at 11 at the West Enosburgh Methodist Church with Pastor Cheryl Heater officiating. Interment will follow in the Enosburgh Center Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held today (Monday) from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

For those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to the Franklin County Home Health Agency, 3 Home Health Circle, St. Albans, Vt. 05478
