ALBERT F. BENNETT
ISLE LA MOTTE -- Mr. Albert F. Bennett, 75, a resident of the Isle La Motte community since 1955, died Saturday morning, Feb. 14, 2004, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans City.
Al was born in Lincoln, Vt., Nov. 14, 1928, the son of the late Edward and Laura (Miller) Bennett. He attended schools in Rochester and on Dec. 23, 1950, he married the former Attrude Dubuque, who survives him.
From 1965 until 1989 Al was associated as a machine repair specialist with the former General Electric Corporation in Burlington. Following his retirement from G. E. he worked with the Town of Alburg as a bulldozer operator. In earlier years he worked for the Hollingsworth & Voss Paper Mill and Ralph Blood Construction Company both in West Groton, Mass. and later assisted in the operation of the Jarvis Farm and also worked for Halls Apple Orchard in Isle La Motte.
An active member of the Isle La Motte community he served as a member of the town select board, was overseer of the poor and still held the office of Weigher of Coal.
He faithfully served his country in the United States Army and Army Reserves and was honorably discharged on April 29, 1955.
In addition to his wife Attrude of Isle La Motte, he leaves his daughter, Karen Gleich and her husband John of Isle La Motte; four sons, Alan Bennett and his wife Paula of Mascotte, Fla., Richard Bennett and his wife Judy, Kirk Bennett and his wife Deborah and Roger Bennett and his wife Cynthia all of Isle La Motte; nine grandchildren, Shawn Bennett and his wife Carletta, Jeffrey Bennett, Sarah Peacock and her husband Toby, Rebecca Bennett, Laura Bennett, Danielle Bennett, Matthew Bennett, Michael Bennett and his wife Desireah and Elizabeth Gleich; a sister, Mrs. Mabel Peters of Groton, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, a sister, Mary Ellwood; brothers, John, George, Walter and Edward Bennett; and a granddaughter at birth, predeceased him.
A Mass Of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Mission, Main Street, Isle La Motte Village. Father Maurice U. Boucher, SSE, will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

ALICE M. FLETCHER
BERKSHIRE -- Alice M. Fletcher, age 78, passed away peacefully after a long illness with congestive heart failure at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004.
She was born Jan. 3, 1926, in Richford Center, Vt. on the family farm. She was the daughter of Alson B. Fletcher and Linnie A. (Fletcher) Fletcher.
She attended school in Richford, and was a 4-H club member and State Delegate in the All Girls Clothing Record to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago, Ill. in 1946.
She was a former member of the local, state and national grange. And was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge. She was a member of the Richford United Methodist Church. She had a very strong faith and a very positive outlook in life to the end.
She was a caregiver for her parents and her older sister, always with a smile.
She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Dr. Arwin F.B.G. Sexauer; and four brothers-in-law.
She is survived by one sister, Maxine A. Lumbra of Berkshire, whom she made her home with for the past 10 years; one niece, Dawn Mennucci and her husband John of Pawtucket, R.I.; one nephew, Alson Bashaw and his wife Marilyn of Dade City, Fla.; she also leaves five grand nieces; and six great grand nieces and nephews; several cousins and close friends.
In keeping with her wishes there will be no calling hours or funeral services at this time. A graveside memorial service will be held next spring in the Richford Center Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

ROBERT M. SCHUMO
NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. - Robert M. Schumo, 85, died peacefully, Feb. 11, 2004, the day after he was admitted to Hospice of Palm Beach.
Mr. Schumo was born in Easton Pa., the son of Elmer Mansfield Schumo and Anna Kulp Schumo on April 15, 1918 -- the least celebratory day of the year, Income Tax Day -- he would have added.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Kaufman Schumo, of Wyomissing, Pa. and North Palm Beach, Fla., his daughter, Cynthia Schumo Lynn and granddaughter, Hillary Scott Lynn, both of St. Albans Vt. He was predeceased by his son, Robert Mansfield Schumo, Jr. in 1980.
Mr. Schumo was graduated, with top honors, from: the Hamburg School System, the Hill School, Williams College, Georgetown University School of Law, and the Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute (Degree in Ferrous Metallurgy.)
The Williams College track coach spirited him away from the baseball team and Mr. Schumo went on to achieve and maintain the Williams record for the 100-yard dash -- competing with the likes of Jesse Owens in 1940, the year in which he would have participated in the Olympics had they not been canceled.
Mr. Schumo served as a US Naval Lieutenant during WWII from 1942-6 as a code breaker and maker -- first in Newfoundland, then in Bermuda.
Rather than accepting the federal Circuit Court clerkship offered in D.C., he went into business with his father - advancing to president of Pennsylvania Electric Steel Casting Company in Hamburg Pa. He sold the company in 1961, retired to the golf course for a year, managed Crucible Steel in Lansdowne, Pa. for yet another then bought back his prior company and changed its name to Pennsylvania Steel Foundry and Machine Company, serving as president and CEO from 1964-1979. From 1981-1986, he owned Vermont Publishing Corporation, d/b/a the St. Albans Messenger but left all decision-making authority to his daughter and son-in-law. He also served as president and CEO of Smith Engineering Company from 1967-present as well as president of Spruce Lane Associates from 1979-present.
He was awarded the Frederick A. Lorenz Medal for Outstanding Service to the Steel Casting Industry in 1964.
Mr. Schumo was actively involved in community affairs. He was a member of the Wyomissing Borough Council from 1970-84, past president of the Rotary Club of Hamburg, past president of the Steel Founders Society of America, past director of the Manufacturers Association of Berks County, past director of the Chamber of Commerce of Berks County, past president of the Cast Metals Federation, former Berks County chairman of the Republican Party, and former member of the Governor's Task Force for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Other Controlled Substances (Pa.)
He was a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Rajah Shrine for 50 years. Other affiliations include: First United Church of Christ, First Presbyterian Church, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Theta Phi, Union League of Philadelphia, Berkshire Country Club, Moselem Springs Club, Skytop Club, Lost Tree Club, Jupiter Hills Club, American Foundrymen's Society, Newcomen Society, and the Old Goats Club.
His purposeful 85 years came with decrees that he would never: stop driving, be confined to a wheelchair, live in a nursing home, or go on a cruise. He died peacefully with all wishes granted.

JAMES B. HAMEL
SWANTON -- James B. Hamel, 73, a native and longtime resident of Swanton, died at his Malcolm Street residence Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004.
Jim was born in St. Albans Dec. 28, 1930, the third child of George and Ruth (Sullivan) Hamel. The graduated from Springfield High School and Subsequently joined the U.S. Navy. Jim served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saipan patrolling Korean waters during the Korean War.
After the war Jim attended the Vaughn School of Barbering in Hartford, Conn. Thereafter he worked for many years in the Veterans Hospital in Brookline, Mass. He was a compassionate person and comforted many sick veterans providing them with their haircuts.
He was a loyal Red Sox fan and dearly loved to watch their games (even when they lost). He also enjoyed basketball.
Jimmy was a dutiful son and would visit his father in assisted living residence every other day where his Dad spent his last years. He was also a loving brother and uncle.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Wallace (Bud) Hamel.
Survivors include two sisters, Theresa (Bettie) and husband, Dr. John Warden of Alburg and Sarasota, Fla. and Kathleen (Kathy) and husband, Eugene Morrissey of Burlington and Naples, Fla.; many nieces, nephews and also a cousin, Jack Hamelle and his wife Barb.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton Village. Father John J. Meagher SSE will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment with full military honors will follow in the Hamel family lot in St. Mary's Cemetery. There will be no public calling hours.

ERNEST HENRY HANLON
WHEATON, Md. -- Earnest H. Hanlon, "Ernie, " 74, of Wheaton, Md., died peacefully Feb. 2, 2004, at the Casey Center Hospice in Rockville, Md.
He was born June 21, 1929, in St. Albans, Vt. He was the son of Louis Ernest Hanlon and Francine (Westover) Hanlon. He attended BFA high school in St. Albans, Vt.
He worked as a Salesman most all his life, and for the last 29 years, worked as a Flooring Consultant in the Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC metropolitan area.
Some highlights of his career were the numerous embassies from around the world located in the DC area that he was contracted to service including The National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. The most memorable was the stage and walkways used for his holiness Pope John Paul II during his last visit to the United States.
He leaves behind a very large customer following that he has developed and served for almost 30 years, along with a loyal and trusted staff of co-workers at Custom Carpets in Kennsington, Md. His professionalism will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Ernie was forever linked to Lake Champlain in his body, mind and soul from early childhood. He was of a rare breed of individual that truly respected, understood, and shared his wisdom and knowledge of the movement of, and the life in the lake. Anyone who ever truly knew him, understood his greatest joy in life, second to his family, was to be in or on Lake Champlain.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Terri Hanlon; his sisters, Sylvia Barton and Mickey Brooks; his sons, Louis D. Hanlon, and Duane C. Hanlon; and a daughter, Deborah L. Franks; grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many cherished in-laws.
Ernie is predeceased by his first wife, Mona Violet Jones, of St. Albans Bay, Vt.

DALE W. LEFFERMAN
GARDNER, Mass. -- Dale W. Lefferman, 58, of Princeton St., Gardner, Mass., died Friday morning at Heywood Hospital in Gardner after a long illness.
He was born in St Albans, Vt. on Sept. 2, 1945, son of William Lefferman and Barbara (Whiting) Lefferman. He married his beloved wife Beverly (Lemoine) Lefferman on June 4, 1966. Mr. Lefferman lived in Gardner for eight years, prior to which he lived in Lancaster, Mass. for many years.
Mr. Lefferman was employed with the Restech Company in Clinton, Mass., where he worked as a mold setter, producing plastic medical parts. Mr. Lefferman was an avid fisherman, who enjoyed camping and wood working, he also enjoying taking his dog for rides in his car.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Lefferman is survived by one son, Dale L. Lefferman of Gardner, Mass.; one stepson, Leonard Lemoine of Petersham, Mass.; two daughters, Lisa Gaudet, of Royalston, Mass., and Wendy Lefferman of Gardner, Mass.; two sisters, Karen Richards of Leominster, Mass., and Cynthia Lemons of Leominster, Mass.; and six grandchildren.
The Funeral Service will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours held.
