OLA L. (ELLSWORTH) TRACY

CAMBRIDGE -- Ola Lizzie (Ellsworth) Tracy, 86, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, in Northwest Medical Center in St. Albans. She was born in Fairfax on Sept. 30, 1917, daughter of the late Clinton and Lizzie (Blakely) Ellsworth.

Ola graduated from BFA-Fairfax, class of 1938. She married Harland Tracy on Nov. 2, 1938, in Brattleboro. Harland predeceased her on Feb. 15, 1991.

Ola was active in her community as a member of Friendly Neighbors Senior Citizens, Unity Chapter 17 Order of Eastern Star, and Fairfax-Georgia Quilters. She was an avid Red Sox fan. Ola was lovingly involved in her grandchildren's activities. She was a loving and devoted mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She is survived by four daughters, Beverly Warren and husband Martin of Harbor Springs, Mich., Shirley Geno and husband Roger of Fletcher, Phyllis Fletcher and husband Rawleigh of Cambridge and Barbara O'Toole and husband Michael of Tinton Falls, N.J.; one brother, Ralph C. Ellsworth of Fairfax; one daughter-in-law, Linda Tracy; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her son, Ralph C. Tracy; and her sister, Reba E. Bessette.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in Hayes-Rich Funeral Home from 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at 11 a.m. in the United Church of Fairfax with the Reverend Elizabeth Griffin officiating. Interment will be in the spring in the family lot in Binghamville Cemetery.

MAURICE GIRARD TARTE

FREMONT, Calif. / GEORGIA, Vt. -- Maurice Girard Tarte, age 67, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at his home in Fremont, Calif. He was born in Georgia, Vt. on Aug. 27, 1936, son of the late Sylvio and Lillian (Demers) Tarte.

He grew up and worked on the family farm. He also worked at Fonda Container Co. Maurice was a member of the Vermont Army National Guard with an honorable discharge in 1961. In 1964, he left Vermont to go to Barber school in California, where he then barbered for several years. Later, he pursued a career in antiques.

Maurice leaves his brothers, Normand E. and wife Martha Tarte of Swanton, Fernand J. Tarte of Phoenix, Ariz., Roger Tarte and wife Geraldine of Los Banos, Calif.; his sisters, Jeannine Pouliot of South Hadley, Mass., Dr. Claire J. Tarte Yeo and husband Grant of Phoenix, Ariz. He also leaves several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Besides his parents, Maurice was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Richard Pouliot.

Services and burial took place on Jan. 2, 2004, in Clovis Cemetery District, Clovis, Calf., County of Fresno, Calif. Whitehurst Funeral Chapels Inc. of Los Banos, Calif. was in charge of arrangements.

JOYCE ANN POISSANT

SWANTON -- Joyce Ann Poissant, 72, a longtime resident of 59 Spring Street in Swanton Village, died Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 16, 2003, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

Joyce was born in North Sheldon, Vt. on Dec. 24, 1930, the daughter of the late Carl and Virginia (Strait) Johnson. She graduated from Franklin High School and on Sept. 7, 1951, in New Brunswick, N.J. married Marc Poissant, who survives her.

Joyce was active in the Church Sunday School program for 10 years; she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and working in her gardens. Joyce was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends she knew.

In addition to her husband, Marc, Joyce leaves a son, Danny Poissant and his special friend, Sheri Bergeron of Sheldon; two daughters, Rachel Nieberding and her special friend, Brian Mizzi of Milton, and Julie Foltz and her fiance Delano Bransfield Jr. of Highgate; also a sister, Marlene Lumbra and her husband Douglas of St. Albans. Joyce also leaves her grandchildren, Keri, Courtney and Jarred Begnoche, Danielle Lawrence, Jesse, Anthony and Megan Poissant, Jordan, Joshua and Alex Foltz and Taylor Nicholas; her great-grandchildren, Mason Vieta, Katrina Poissant and Breanne Cline; and aunt, Esther King of Richford; sister-in-law, Ruth Babbie and her husband David of Sheldon; brother-in-law, Maurice Poissant and his wife Beverly of Windsor Locks, Conn.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents; and two grandsons, Danny Poissant and Jeremy Poissant.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at 3 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave. Swanton. The Reverend Donald R. Morris, Rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church will officiate. Spring Interment will be in the Poissant family lot in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral.

SHEILA (RISING) RENFREW

FAIRFAX -- Sheila (Rising) Renfrew, 61, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville after a long illness. Sheila was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and friend who gave tirelessly of herself to improve the lives of children and adults with disabilities.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Renfrew of Fairfax; two sons, Eric Renfrew of Moretown, and Sean Renfrew of Virginia Beach, Va.; Her foster son, Gary Pasha; her mother, Margaret Rising of Hartford, Vt.; a sister, Anne Rising of Hartford, Vt.; two brothers, James Rising of Dallas, Pa., and Charles Rising of Johnson; her sister-in-law, Dianne Quebec of Fairfax; two grandchildren; a niece; two nephews; an Uncle; and a great-uncle. She will also be missed by her beloved cats, Cleo, Cakes, and Smokey. She was predeceased by her father, Floyd Rising of Hartford, Vt.

At the family's request, there will be no public visiting hours. There will be a private funeral service for the family at Hayes-Rich Funeral Home in Fairfax, on Wednesday evening, Jan. 7, 2004. Interment will be private in the spring in the family lot at Beaver Cemetery, Fairfax.

Sheila requested that in lieu of flowers, people who wish to may make a donation to their favorite charity. Arrangements are by Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St, Fairfax.

VERONICA T. MILLER

Veronica T. (Sweeney) Miller, age 75, passed away with her family by her side on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004. A lifetime resident of St. Albans, she was born in Fairfax on March 11, 1928, daughter of the late Teresa "Tessie" (Dashno) Bellville and Louis Sweeney.

She married Rosaire "Bud" Miller on June 27, 1951, and lived happily for 46 years. Together they owned and operated the Miller's Used Furniture and Antique business along with the Jumping Flea for 26 years. Prior to going into business with her husband she managed Hotel Thompson.

She is survived by her children Linda and her husband Leo Bilodeau of St. Albans Town, Patsy Miller Bates of Swanton, Karl Miller and his wife Gail of Enosburg Falls, Judy and her husband Ronald Greenleaf of Massena, N.Y., Sandy Tailon of Danville, Ill.; her sister Hilda Juaire of Georgia; and her much loved grandchildren, Tammy and her husband Ed Shannon, Nicole Fournier, Stacie Bilodeau, Rosaire Fournier, Carrie Bilodeau, Beth Miller, Chad Bilodeau, Michelle Miller, Dustin and Samantha Miller Bates, Calvin, Mary and Jessica Miller, Christine and her husband Armen Ashikyan, Sean and his wife Terry Scudera, Amy and her husband Randy Rothwell, Sandy and her husband Mike Johnson, Ronald Jr. and Laurie Greenleaf; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins; her brother and sister-in-laws, Lionel and Jeanne Miller, Roland "Joe" and Claire Miller. Besides being predeceased by her husband Rosaire in 1997, she was predeceased by her twin brother Everett; brothers Wallace, Stanley and Arnold Sweeney; grandsons, Baby Boy Bilodeau, Travis Miller, and David L. Fournier II.

She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary 758. She treasured her weekend adventures with her husband traveling throughout Vermont. She enjoyed baking, canning, berry picking and making jam and cooking for her family and friends. Veronica took great pleasure in bringing smiles to others as she delivered flowers for Barbara's Bouquet. She enjoyed playing bingo, cards and taking senior bus trips with her friends. Other hobbies included making braided rugs, quilting, sewing and knitting. An early riser, she attended garage sales and participated in antique shows, flea markets and auctions in Vermont and Florida. She liked spending time fishing and boating on Lake Champlain. She looked forward to the times she spent with her great grand children especially Katie, Danielle and Patrick for they held a very special place in her heart.

Her strength and passion for family enabled her to support those she loved most during joyful occasions and in times of need. She will be remembered by those whose lives she touched and will be deeply missed.

A memorial service to celebrate Veronica's life will be held in Holy Angels Church in St. Albans on Friday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. Arrangements are by Brady and Levesque Funeral Home, 86 Main St., St. Albans.

DONALD S. HOWARD

ENOSBURG FALLS -- Donald S. Howard, age 96, passed away Monday evening Jan. 5, 2004, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. He was born in Westford, Vt., July 16, 1907, the son of the late Sherman W. and Lura (Goodrich) Howard.

Mr. Howard was a 1924 graduate of BFA-Fairfax. He attended Burlington Business College, received a diploma in commercial banking from Rutgers University Graduate School of Banking in 1957. Following graduation he was employed at the former Essex Trust Co. in Essex Jct. prior to moving to Enosburg Falls in 1951 where he served as manager and later Vice President of the Howard Bank until retiring in 1972. He also worked as an appraiser in the 1970s.

In his younger days, Don was known as "Del Presto" and traveled much about New England delighting audiences with his magic shows often assisted by his wife, Wilma and/or his daughters Carole and Mary. Don had a great interest in photography enjoying many hours out of doors capturing nature scenes. He also enjoyed music having played the violin and organized a small band in the 1930s.

He was a member of the Enosburg Falls Lions Club and served as the original President in 1951 and 1952 and received the Melvin Jones Award. He also was the master of ceremonies for many June Dairy Festival Parades. He belonged to the Society of American Magicians, he was a member of the Enosburg Falls Methodist Church and had served on the Enosburg School District Prudential Committee for 10 years.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma (Reed) Howard of Enosburg Falls, they were married May 14, 1938; two daughters, Carole Ann Johnson and her husband Ivan of Swanton, and Mary Howard of Milton; his grandchildren, Ivan Johnson Jr. his wife Mary and their children, JoAna, Joseph and Adam, Bruce Johnson and his wife Debbie, and Christine Scanlon her husband Christopher and their daughter Carly; his brothers-in-law and their wives, James and Carol Reed of Williston, Earl and Eleanor Reed, and Hugh and Barbara Reed all of Essex Jct.; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by a sister, Lillian (Howard) Olbrych; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Wilmot and Agnes Reed.

Friends and relatives may call on the family one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held Friday morning at 11 at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls with Pastor Cheryl Heater officiating. Interment will follow in the Riverside Cemetery in Swanton.

GEORGE R. KLINEFELTER

SWANTON -- George R. Klinefelter, 69, a Vermont native and a resident of Swanton since 1970, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, following a brief illness.

Born in Brattleboro, March 1, 1934, the son of John R. and Albina (Bergeron) Klinefelter, George was a graduate of Canaan Memorial High School and received his bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Vermont in 1959.

George's long career in law enforcement began in 1960 when he became an inspector for the United States Customs Service, his first assignments in Montreal, PQ, Canada, St. Albans and Newport. During this period he took a post in Vietnam as the Public Administration Advisor to the Vietnam Customs Service, first from 1967-68 and again in 1971. In 1970, George transferred to Rouses Point, N.Y. where he became a Special Agent for the Customs Service. George also worked with the DEA and the, then, Customs Patrol on the northern border. In 1986, he moved to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada where he became the Customs Representative in the attaché's office at the US Embassy. During his career, George also developed and instructed courses at both the US Customs Academy and the Canadian College of Law Enforcement.

Upon his retirement in 1990, George returned to UVM and in 1992 received his Masters Degree in Public Administration. He went on to serve as interim Chief of Police for the Town of Milton and as a partner in K&R Associates, Private Investigation Consultants. For the past eight years, George has remained very active as an independent contractor to the U.S. Government conducting training seminars in foreign countries.

During his many years of service, George was the recipient of numerous awards and honors including a Presidential Letter and the Commissioner's Citation from the US Customs.

In addition to his professional life, George was very involved in civic and community activities volunteering for Samaritan House and the Court Diversion Program in St. Albans, serving on the Swanton Planning Commission, the Swanton Town/Village Merger Committee, and as a Justice of the Peace in Franklin County.

He was a member of Masonic groups in the Northeast Kingdom and of The American Legion Post in Canaan and belonged to many government organizations.

An avid sailor and skier, George was a 25-year member of the U.S. Ski Patrol serving at Jay Peak.

He faithfully served his country in the United States Army from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956.

George is survived by his children, John H. Klinefelter and his wife Carrie of Bakersfield, Karen L. Klinefelter and her partner Sam Norris of Burlington and California and Alan Klinefelter and his wife Kim of Highgate Springs; two grandchildren, Gabriella and Grace; his loving companion, Pauline Chatelle of Montreal, PQ, Canada and Swanton and her children and grandchildren, Josee and Richard Chatelle-Blais, Annick and Stephane Chatelle-Lambert and Jhade, Sarah, Daphne and Laurie, all of Montreal; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John O. and Marion Klinefelter of Guildhall and Les and Patricia Klinefelter of St. Simons Island, Georgia; his former wife, Phyllis Klinefelter of Burlington; and several nieces nephews and cousins. George also leaves his constant companion, Bill the Dog, now residing in Highgate Springs.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at 2 p.m. at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Interment will be in the spring in the family lot in Alice Hunt Cemetery in Canaan. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home on Tuesday evening, Jan. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m.

LOUIS G. LAGROW

SHELDON -- Louis G. Lagrow, 72, a longtime area resident, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. He was born in St. Albans on Sept. 26, 1931, the son of Mabel Naylor Lagrow and the late Gordon Lagrow. On April 30, 1967, he was married to the former Nellie Grenier, who survives him.

Louis was employed as a mechanic for many years at the Fonda Container Corporation, retiring in 1993.

Besides his wife, Nellie of Sheldon, he is survived by his mother, Mabel Lagrow also of Sheldon; a brother and his wife, Leslie and Linda Lagrow of Aiken, S.C.; a sister, Arlene Nichols of Sheldon, a sister and her husband, Patricia and Albert Noel of Portland, Oregon; a sister-in-law, Jessie Lagrow of St. Albans; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Gordon in 1962; two brothers, Reginald W. in 1989, and Wesley C. in 1994; and a sister, Rita Eno in 1988.

Funeral services and interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans.
