ALBINA E. DUVAL
RICHFORD, Vt. / ENFIELD, Conn. -- Albina E. Duval, age 91, passed away Wednesday evening, Dec. 3, 2003, at the Haven Health Care Nursing Home in St. Albans, Vt. She was born Dec. 20, 1911, in Montgomery, the daughter of the late Joseph and Lucy (Duval) Sylvester.
She was raised in the Montgomery / Richford area and moved to Enfield, Conn. in 1961. She moved back to Vermont, the land that she loved, in 1996. She was a former member of All Saints Catholic Church in Richford and St. Martha's Catholic Church in Enfield, Conn.
Albina enjoyed reading, poetry, sewing, nature and most of all cooking for her family.
She is survived by her children, Cecile Deblois and her husband John of East Hartford, Conn., Jane Maxwell and her husband Paul of Enfield, Conn., and Dennis Duval of San Jose, Calif.; her grandchildren, Michael Steadman Jr., Kathleen Steadman, Debra Braman and her husband William Braman III, Joseph Maxwell, Barbara Maxwell, Charlotte Duval, and Mary Duval; a great grandson, Angel Gomez Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis M. Duval in 1972; they were married Nov. 3, 1946; and her siblings, Hermas Sylvester, Napoleon Sylvester, Sylvia Mayhew, Earl Sylvester, and Lloyd Sylvester.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Enosburg Falls with Reverend Benedict Kiely celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will take place next spring in All Saints Cemetery in Richford, Vt.
Friends and relatives may call on the family on Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls.

RICHARD E. CHARRON
WALLINGFORD, Conn. -- Richard E. Charron, 61, of Wooding Road in Wallingford, died December 4, 2003 at the Yale New Haven Hospital. He was the loving companion of Patricia DeFilio and her children Robert, Scott and his wife Gina, and Lisa, all of Wallingford.
Mr. Charron was born in St. Albans, Vt. on Aug. 1, 1942, a son of the late Joseph and Madeline Smith Charron. He had been employed as an automotive salesman.
Mr. Charron is survived by two sons, Patrick Charron of Meriden and James Charron of St. Albans, Vt.; two daughters, Kathleen Thomas of St. Albans, Vt. and Kellie Charron of Fairfax, Vt.; one brother, James Charron of Meriden; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends may call on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the B.C. Bailey Funeral Home, 273 South Elm Street, Wallingford, Conn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 382 Hopehill Rd. in the Yalesville section of Wallingford.
It is suggested that memorial contributions in Richard's name be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital, 516 Carew St., Springfield, Mass. 01104.
Burial will be private.
MERTA E. WAKEFIELD
RANDOLPH -- Merta Elizabeth Wakefield, 91, died Dec. 4, 2003, in Bennington. She was born May 9, 1912, in East Bethel, the daughter of Clayton and Lida (Buck) Wight.
She was educated in East Bethel, South Royalton High School and Castleton Normal School, where she received her teaching degree. She married Arthur M. Wakefield on Nov. 28, 1933, in Bethel. He died in 1986. They lived in West Brookfield from 1933 until 1946, when they moved to Randolph.
Mrs. Wakefield taught grade school for 30 years in South Randolph, South Royalton, West Braintree, Rochester Hollow and Randolph. She was a member of the United Church in Randolph, Beulah Chapter 15 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Middle Branch Grange for 70 years, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of the Ed Larkin Contra Dancers, and Vermont Mother of the Year in 1984. She enjoyed her family, camping, reading and traveling.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Brown of Shaftsbury, and Maydene Mort of Bennington; five sons, David A. Wakefield of Randolph, Richard L. Wakefield of St. Albans, William M. Wakefield of Windsor, Duane W. Wakefield of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and LeRoy Wakefield of East Barre; two sisters, Merle Morse of Barre and Mildred Ford of Florida; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was predeceased by a brother, Howard Wight; and two sisters, Marian Button and Martha Wight.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home with the Reverend Roger Wotton of the United Church in Randolph officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in West Brookfield Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. An Eastern Star service will take place at 8 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Order of the Eastern Star, in care of Doris Graves, 29 Highland Ave., Randolph, or the United Church Memory Fund, in care of United Church, Main Street, Randolph, Vt. 05060.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home.
JOAN B. BAILEY
ST. ALBANS -- Miss Joan Barbara Bailey, age 61, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 2, 2003, from injuries resulting from a fall at her home. Joan was born in Bristol on Nov. 24, 2003, daughter of Ernestine (Warner) and the late Charles Bailey.
Joan had lived in Richford and for the past 23 years made her home in St. Albans. She was employed by the Red Top Restaurant and considered the restaurant owners, employees and customers part of her extended family.
Joannie, as she was fondly called, was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter 321, and was an avid bingo player. She also loved to crochet and play board and card games with her family.
Her survivors include her mother Ernestine (Bailey) Boisvert of St. Albans; her daughter, Tonya and her fiance Dragan Aleksic of Jericho; sisters and brothers and their spouses, June and Roger Fair of Montpelier, Mae Higbee of Ferrisburg, Stella Waltz of Burlington, Ernestine and Armand Chevrier of Swanton, Geraldine and Ralph Nichols of New Hampshire, Robert Bailey of St. Albans, Gerald "Beetle" and Barbara Bailey of St. Albans; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her father in 1952; and by her brother, Herbert "Sonny" Bailey on Sept. 7, 2003.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, at 2 p.m. in the Brady & Levesque Chapel. Friends may call at the funeral home, 86 South Main St., from 1 p.m. until the funeral on Friday.

JOHN CONRAD HARTNETT
SOUTH BURLINGTON -- John Conrad Hartnett died Dec. 2, 2003, at Pillsbury Manor in South Burlington. He was born in Astoria, Long Island, N.Y., Feb. 2, 1922. He was the son of William F. and Applonia R. (Fisher) Hartnett.
John is survived by his three daughters, Mary Hartnett Abbott of Hanover, N.H., and her partner Russ Bartlett, Donna Hartnett Bradley Dion of Ormond Beach, Fla. and her husband James, and Johnette Hartnett of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren, Kristen Abbott Shedd and her husband Karl Shedd, Kate Bradley, Shannon Bradley, Thomas Abbott and his wife Lisa; a great-granddaughter, Madeline Shedd; and his brother William Hartnett of Chicago, Ill. He was predeceased by his wife Irene Victoria in 1999; his son, John Peter in 1965; and three grandchildren, David John, John Peter and
Johnette Terese in 1983.
Dr. Hartnett had a teaching and research career for over 50 years as a member of the biology faculty at St. Michael's College, in Colchester, where he retired as Professor Emeritus in 1987. Dr. Hartnett received a B.S. in Biology, Magna Cum Laude, from St. Michael's College in 1943; a Master's in Science in 1947 and a Ph.D. in 1963, in Biochemistry, from the University of Vermont.
Over the course of his teaching and research career, Dr. Hartnett isolated a new enzyme from the porcine pancreas; taught pre-clinical science courses for the Fanny Allen Hospital School of Nursing; coordinated and team taught one of the first graduate programs in human sexuality offered for teachers in Vermont; participated in the biology test construction committee for the National Dental Aptitude Test and the Optometry Aptitude Test; and received support for his ongoing research on the porcine pancreas from the National Science Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Hartnett published in the fields of biochemistry, laboratory science education and on the history of pharmacy and therapeutics in the 19th century. He was an abstractor for Chem Abstracts for over ten years, and was a reviewer for numerous science books and films.
Dr. Hartnett was an active member of various professional and honorary scientific and educational societies over his lifetime. He served on various community and state boards and committees dedicated to advocacy and service for people with developmental disabilities in Vermont.
Visiting hours will be held at the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003. On Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be con-celebrated at the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel with interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery.

CAROLYN W. BERRYMAN
OLYMPIA, WASH. -- Carolyn Winifred Berryman, 95, died Nov. 30, 2003, at the Mother Joseph Care Center in Olympia, Wash. Carolyn was born April 8, 1908, in St. Albans, Vt., to Frederick William and Elizabeth Caroline (Blake) Berryman.
Carolyn spent her childhood days in St. Albans. She had nine older brothers and sisters and was called the "Little Yankee" because all her siblings were born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She attended St. Lawrence College in Canton, N.Y. before moving to Detroit, Mich. in 1928 where she worked as a secretary for several years. She received a degree from Simmons College, Boston, in 1933, and a certificate in Library Science in 1937. She worked at the Detroit Public Library until 1948 when she moved to Muskegon, Mich., where she worked at the Hackley Public Library. She retired in 1972, having served as head of the Reference Department.
Carolyn enjoyed traveling to Europe many times, to Canada and around the United States. She visited relatives in England and was always proud of her Irish and English heritage. She had a great interest in the theater and music, especially concerts and the opera. She was an avid reader, bird watcher, and Scrabble player and was a member of the Audubon Society.
In October, 1987 she moved to Capital Place Retirement Center to be close to her sister, Lillian Keith. While at Capital Place, she organized trips to theater and musical events. She loved the Pacific Northwest with all its trees and scenery.
Carolyn is survived by a 101 year-old brother, Ronald Berryman of Loomis, Calif.; nieces Elizabeth Foote (Gary) of Olympia, and Carolyn Reidy of Shrewsbury, Mass.; nephews, John Berryman of Burlington, Vt., and Frederick Berryman of Loomis, Calif., and their families.
A family celebration of life will be held in the Chapel at Mother Joseph's Care Center. A graveside service will be held in the future in St. Albans, Vt.

ESTHER HUTCHINSON
PALATKA, Fla. / RICHFORD, Vt. -- Esther Hutchinson, daughter of Frank and Jeanette Holland, born Oct. 26, 1914, in New Hampton, N.H., died Nov. 8, 2003, at the age of 89 in Palatka, Fla.
She and her husband, Don, and two sons were long time residents of Richford, Vt., where they operated a local grocery store and were active in community affairs. After retiring in 1965, they moved to Meredith, N.H. where Mrs. Hutchinson lived until 1989.
She moved to Florida in 1989 to be close to her son and enjoy the warm climate.
She is survived by two sons, William and wife, Pat in Middletown, Conn., and Douglas and wife, Cynthia in Orange Park, Fla. Mrs. Hutchinson is also survived by four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Eileen Holland and Myrtle Holland of New Hampshire.
She was predeceased by her husband, Don in 1966; four brothers; and three sisters.
Memorial services are pending in New Hampshire and Vermont interment in Morrisville, Vt. in May of 2004.

OLA (DYER) CARR
COWANSVILLE, QUEBEC -- A truly gallant and courageous woman went to her rest at 3:36 p.m. in the Brome Missisquoi Perkins Hospital on Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in her 92nd year. At her bedside were Cecil, her husband of 64 years; her daughters, Anita McFeeters and Cathryn Royea; her granddaughter, Melanie; and great-granddaughter, Naomie.
She was predeceased by her son, Frank; brothers, Hollis, Allyn and Winston; brother-in-law, Philip Gibbon; sister-in-law, Alice Dyer; and son-in-law, Faramarz Samandari. She leaves behind her sister, Winona Gibbon; sisters-in-law, Violet Knights and Shirley Dyer; sons-in-law, Donald McFeeters and Vincent Royea; five grandchildren, Colin Davidson (Heather), Melanie Tardif (Alain), Kiumars, Maryam, Kamyar; and great-grandchildren, Tania, Jordan, Samantha, Johnathan, Naomie; many nieces and nephews; and a host of wonderful friends.
The family appreciates the caring help of the C.L.S.C., the Day-Care Foyer staff, and volunteer reader Josie Jones.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Grace Anglican Church, Sutton, Quebec, on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m.
The family extends special thanks to the hospital staff and Dr. Bourbeau. They appreciate the many years of care given by Dr. Denis Lesieur.
